The RoboCop franchise kicked off in 1987, and while neither the sequels nor 2014's reboot managed to live up to that cult classic, interest in the franchise among fans remains high. The gloriously ultraviolent RoboCop: Rogue City video game is proof of that!

Back in 2022, Amazon closed an $8.5 billion acquisition of the film studio MGM, giving them ownership of the studio’s thousands of films and TV shows. Last year, we heard that the six MGM properties Amazon was most interested in doing something with were Poltergeist, Stargate, The Thomas Crown Affair, Legally Blonde, Rocky, and RoboCop… and we’ve recently heard updates on some of those projects, with a Poltergeist TV series finding its showrunners and Michael B. Jordan signing on to both direct and star in a new version of The Thomas Crown Affair. Now Deadline has broken the news that a new RoboCop TV series is moving forward and has James Wan, the director of such films as Saw, The Conjuring, and Aquaman, on board as executive producer.

Robocop continues to progress through the development process at Amazon MGM Studios. Veteran Peter Ocko (Lodge 49) has been tapped as writer, executive producer and showrunner on the potential series, based on the MGM movie franchise, with horror master James Wan on board to executive produce through his Atomic Monster banner.
The series will follow the premise of the films, focusing on a giant tech conglomerate which collaborates with the local police department to introduce a technologically advanced enforcer to combat rising crime — a police officer who’s part man, part machine.
Ocko executive produces alongside Wan, Michael Clear, and Rob Hackett for Atomic Monster. Danielle Bozzone is overseeing for Atomic Monster.
As Deadline reported exclusively last year, Robocop was among the first MGM titles identified for series development following Amazon’s acquisition of the 100-year-old studio. The first project under the initiative, a Legally Blonde prequel series, was greenlighted in May,...

“AfrAId” is a Blumhouse horror movie starring John Cho and Katherine Waterston.
Blumhouse Productions leads us once more through the familiar corridors that have solidified its status as a powerhouse in the industry: films that often feature straightforward narratives, which may occasionally border on the predictable, yet consistently achieve commercial success. “AfrAId” doesn’t aspire to revolutionize the genre of science fiction, nor does it aim to astonish us with groundbreaking originality or innovative concepts. Picture a cross between Stanley Kubrick’s Hal and Amazon’s Alexa, and you have a fairly accurate idea of what to expect.
Predictable, perhaps, but undeniably engaging and backed by quality production.
Plot Summary
The story revolves around an employee at a prominent advertising agency who is tasked with testing a cutting-edge device at home: an AI reminiscent of Alexa, but significantly more advanced. This AI learns at an alarming rate, and it isn...

“Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” is now on Netflix, bringing renewed interest to the case of the two brothers who murdered their parents. But as with any true crime series, there’s interest in knowing what the real people involved are up to now.
Erik and Lyle Menendez have been in prison since their 1996 conviction in the murder of their parents. As a note at the end of a series tells us, “Lyle and Erik Menendez maintain the allegation of sexual abuse at the hands of their mother and father. They continue to serve life sentences without the possibility of parole.”

A couple of months ago, billboards promoting this previously unheard of pop star started popping up in Los Angeles and London, and a Skye Riley fan account appeared on Instagram, with an official website also arriving online. Now, a month away from Smile 2‘s release date, the fictional pop star has released a new single called “Grieved You.” A promotional video can be seen in the embed above, and the full song can be found at This Link.

To the chagrin of many Stephen King fans, Salem’s Lot — the latest movie adaptation of the horror master’s 1975 bestseller — will bypass theaters and debut on Max.
So we’ll be deprived of the big screen experience, and non-subscribers will have a hard time accessing the film.
That’s the bad news.
(Max (YouTube screenshot))
The good news is that early buzz about the project has been ecstatic, and a new trailer released today promises a suitably spine-tingling experience.
Over the familiar strains of Gordon Lightfoot’s “Sundown,” author Ben Mears (Lewis Pullman) “returns to his childhood home of Jerusalem’s Lot in search of inspiration for his next book, only to discover his hometown is being preyed upon by a bloodthirsty vampire.”
The film also stars Alfre Woodard, Makenzie Leigh, Bill Camp, and William Sadler.

Plot: Writer-director Kevin Smith presents his most personal film to date with this coming-of-age story — set in the summer of 1986 — that follows three sixteen-year-old friends who spend their Saturdays sneaking into movies at the local cineplex. When one of the guys invites the girl of his dreams to see an R-rated film, all hilarity breaks loose, as a self-important theater manager and teen rivalries interfere with his best-laid plans.
Review: I have been a Kevin Smith fan since I saw Clerks in the mid-90s. Smith had a solid run over the early course of his career, but the 2010s were less kind from a critical standpoint. While I have stood by his projects even when the quality was less than I knew he was capable of, my gut told me that Kevin Smith had another great project in him. 1981 was one hell of a year for Ted Danson. Not only did he draw Hollywood attention for his supporting role in the steamy thriller Body Heat, he also got his ass kicked on Magnum P.I. Talk about hitting the daily double.
Danson’s Magnum P.I. episode was monumental for two reasons, Tom Selleck told Danson this week on the Where Everybody Knows Your Name podcast. First, the day Danson showed up to film was the day that Selleck learned his show had been picked up for a second season. “We were doing pretty good,” Selleck said, “but you never know.”
The second reason the episode was a big deal? It was the one in which Selleck went rogue. Danson was the villain of the week, playing “a murderous, wimpy husband.”
“Here was the monumental thing for this show,” Selleck said. The two men, along with Danson’s fictional wife, were on a boat.

Aside from IP with mass appeal and superhero stuff, horror is about the only thing that seems to make any money at the box office these days. That's mostly due to the fact horror movies typically don't cost a whole lot to make, leaving more profit on the table at the end of their theatrical runs. But horror isn't just a reliably popular genre at the box office. It also does well on streaming, where we've actually had some pretty decent offerings in recent years.
By far the best example is "His House," which hit Netflix back in 2020 and was even better than your favorite horror movie. Indeed, the film earned a rare 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and proved that Netflix could be much more than a delivery method for middling Kevin Hart projects and instantly forgettable streaming films. Unfortunately, not all the horror that emerges on Netflix is of quite the same standard.

In Geoffrey Sax's 2005 thriller "White Noise," Michael Keaton plays an architect named Jonathan Rivers (not to be confused with rocker Johnny Rivers) who is living in connubial bliss with his second wife Anna (Chandra West). One night, Anna doesn't come home. She remains missing for five months. Jonathan is devastated, but holds out hope that she may still be alive. One day, he is contacted by a man named Raymond (Ian McNeice) who claims to have a clue as to Anna's whereabouts. Raymond has been watching static-tuned TVs and listening to garbled radio signals, and claims he can hear voices emerging through the hissing. Raymond is convinced that the voices are the voices of ghosts, able to communicate with the land of the living through electrical signals.
Jonathan doesn't believe Raymond at first, but soon falls under the spell of white noise monitoring. He finds that his monitoring is...

"The Exorcist," "Poltergeist," and... "The Deliverance"? With its wild writing choices, a wig-wearing Glenn Close, and a mounting pile of mostly negative reviews, the new Netflix horror film from Lee Daniels doesn't exactly seem like it's ready to stand among the genre greats. Yet according to Daniels himself, the three movies have something in common: their sets were all supposedly cursed.
"Listen, I read those books about the making of 'Poltergeist' and the making of 'The Exorcist,'" Daniels told Variety in a new interview. "And I'm like, 'Nope, not today, Satan. Ain't happening today up in this motherf***er.'"
The filmmaker behind "The Butler" and "The Paperboy" may have had some reason to be concerned. Although both of the other movie "curses" mentioned above were likely a combination of coincidence and unsafe working conditions (more on that later), the allegedly true story "The Deliverance" is based on is pretty spooky.

Netflix’s possession horror movie The Deliverance is loosely based on the 2011 account of Latoya Ammons and her family’s haunting, otherwise known as the Demon House. Director Lee Daniels didn’t want to take any chances when it came to broaching the horror tied to Ammons’ account and enlisted an apostle to anoint the set with prayer.

The spookiest time of the year is upon us and AMC has taken to social media to officially tease the return of “FearFest,” their annual block of Halloween season programming.
“Spooky season is right around the corner and your fave fears are coming back,” AMC tweets this afternoon. “Get ready for #FearFest all October long only on AMC.”
They’ve also shared a short teaser for this year’s “FearFest” celebration, which includes clips from the Hellraiser, Friday the 13th, Halloween, and A Nightmare on Elm Street franchises.
Other films featured in the video include Creepshow, Poltergeist, The Thing and The Shining.
It’s worth noting here that last year’s “FearFest” ran throughout both September and October, but it looks like this year’s celebration is back to being a month-long affair. That said, you can expect tricks and treats on the AMC-owned Shudder in both September and October.

The previously announced Poltergeist television series is reportedly still in development, according to Variety. On August 19, the outlet exclusively revealed that the upcoming television show being produced by Amazon MGM Studios had found its showrunners in Kalinda Vazquez and Robbie Thompson. In addition to showrunning, the duo will write and executive produce the series, which will be produced by Steven Spielberg's Amblin Television.
No plot details have been shared just yet about the show, but we know it's inspired by the original Tobe Hooper-directed film from 1982. Poltergeist is considered a horror classic and went on to spawn two sequels, Poltergeist II: The Other Side and Poltergeist III, and a 2015 remake.

In today's unnecessary franchises news, Amazon is developing a TV series based on "Poltergeist," the 1982 horror classic directed by the late, great Tobe Hooper and based on a story by Steven Spielberg (who co-wrote the script), which also inspired the song "Shining" by the band Misfits. According to Variety, Amazon MGM has tapped Kalinda Vazquez and Robbie Thompson to serve as writers, showrunners, and executive producers on the series. As of now, however, details are sparse when it comes to the show's approach to the larger franchise.
Vazquez previously worked on "Star Trek: Discovery" and "Prison Break," while Thompson worked on "Supernatural" and served as the showrunner for the prequel series "The Winchesters." The series also brings the horror property full circle, seeing as the original "Poltergeist" was actually inspired by a television show — specifically an episode of "The Twilight Zone" — and is now inspiring a TV series of its own.

Eddie Murphy isn’t known for horror movies — even Vampire in Brooklyn was more belly-laugh than jump-scare, despite the presence of Wes Craven behind the camera. The likely reason Murphy stayed away from the genre? He knew Black people had way too much common sense for horror-movie tropes, as he jokes in this clip from Delirious:
“I was watching Poltergeist last month. I got a question: Why don't white people just leave a house when there's a ghost in the house?” Murphy asks the crowd. “In Amityville Horror, the ghost told them to get out of the house. White people stayed in there. Now that’s a hint and a half for your ass. Ghosts say get the fuck out? I would just tip the fuck out the door.”
No curious investigation for Murphy. Blood in the toilet? An ominous voice whispering “Get out”? That’s all it would...

While the home featured in the 1982 classic Poltergeist (watch it Here) sits on the market, looking for a buyer with more than $1 million to spare, Amazon MGM Studios is moving forward with the Poltergeist TV series we first heard about back in October of last year. Variety notes that Vazquez has previously worked on the shows Fear the Walking Dead, Star Trek: Discovery, Once Upon a Time, Prison Break, and Nikita. She has also written for Marvel Comics, teaming up with Carlos Gomez for the comic book series America Chavez: Made in the USA. As for Thompson, he was a writer and co-executive producer on Supernatural and was also creator and showrunner of the prequel series The Winchesters. He has Marvel Comics experience of his own,...

Seven years ago, Jordan Peele surprised his fans with his directorial debut in the horror genre, Get Out. Peele was a familiar face to American TV audiences who enjoyed his sketch comedy series Key & Peele, which he starred alongside Keegan-Michael Key. However, the horror film from the director did have some influence from comedy in it.

The inspiration for the story of a Black man uncovering the secrets of his White girlfriend’s family came from Eddie Murphy’s 1983 stand-up special. Murphy’s one funny joke about a Hollywood movie trope was turned into the theme of a full-fledged horror film by Peele.

Fede Álvarez’s Alien: Romulus hits theaters this weekend. If you’ve been following along to the Halloweenies all year, you’re no doubt a scholar of the franchise and ready to roll with Romulus. But, if you haven’t been following along, you’re in for a little hardcore history on the series — a deep dive into the depths of hell nearly 9 months in the making.
Spanning over 20 hours, the Halloweenies have dissected every entry in the Alien franchise. Some even have multiple episodes: There are three dedicated to Ridley Scott’s 1979 original and David Fincher‘s Alien3 and two for James Cameron‘s Aliens, Jean-Pierre Jeunet‘s Alien: Resurrection, and Scott’s Prometheus. The rest are just as exhaustive with very little left on the Medlab floor. They even included both 2004’s Alien vs. Predator and 2007’s AvP: Requiem in the midst of online ranking erasure.

The minute Mola Ram (Amrish Puri) sunk his digits into the chest of one very unfortunate Thuggee cultist and extracted his still-beating heart for his followers -- and moviegoers all over the world -- to see, the Motion Picture Association of America (now the Motion Picture Association) finally had to admit it had a ratings problem on its hands.
This horrific scene arrives halfway through Steven Spielberg's "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom," the kickoff film of the 1984 summer movie season, and as the sequel to 1981's box office champ "Raiders of the Lost Ark," easily the year's most anticipated release. Like its predecessor, it was sold as an all-ages adventure, which the MPA certified with a PG rating. For 12 years, PG suggested "Parental Guidance," though most parents treated the rating as a guarantee they could drop off their kids at the theater secure in the knowledge there would be no f-bombs,...

Despite being banned from theaters at its initial 1974 release for its shocking violence, Tobe Hooper’s “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre” remains among the most influential horror films in history — and one that’s inspired countless remakes, sequels, spinoffs, and imitators.
Hooper, who would later direct the cult series “Salem’s Lot” (1979) and the ’80s phenomenon “Poltergeist” (1982), was a documentary cinematographer and an assistant film director at the University of Texas-Austin in the early ’70s. Co-written by Kim Henkel, “Texas Chain Saw” was remarkably only his sophomore feature following his 1969 psychedelic debut “Eggshells,” which Henkel also co-wrote and starred in.
In “Texas Chain Saw,” Sally (Marilyn Burns), her brother Franklin (Paul A. Partain), and their friends go on a doomed road trip in Texas County. On their way to Sally and Franklin’s family slaughterhouse, the journey goes off course when a hitchhiker splatters blood on their Rv, and masked serial...

Our latest review of new and recent books about (or connected to) cinema includes an extraordinary look at transness in film; memoirs from Griffin Dunne, Jon Chu, and Susan Seidelman; and several new books on music, highlighted by the latest from the great Steven Hyden. Plus, we run down some noteworthy novels worth checking out before the summer’s end. Let’s hold on to the season a bit longer, shall we?
Corpses, Fools, and Monsters: The History and Future of Transness in Cinema by Willow Maclay and Caden Gardner (Repeater)
The world of cinema has been in dire need of a book like Corpses, Fools, and Monsters: The History and Future of Transness in Cinema. I am rarely affected by celebrity deaths, but when it was revealed that Wes Craven had passed away on August 30, 2015, weeks after his 76th birthday, I was devastated. Never before had I been so moved by the loss of a person I’d never met. I’ve written several tributes to horror icons over the past few years and have generally approached them from a bit of a distance, keeping my own experience out of them, but with Craven, I’m going to take a different approach.
With icons of the past, their biographies are not so well known and so I presented their lives as an unfolding story as best I could. It seems to me, however, that most fans of Wes Craven have a basic idea of his biography—born August 2, 1939 in Cleveland, Ohio; abandoned by his father who died soon after at a very young age; raised...

I can't recommend Oddity enough to Daily Dead readers. From writer / director Damian Mc Carthy the film plays like an Amicus horror film segment, with excellent acting, and enough scares to keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. I had the chance to talk with Damian Mc Carthy, who spoke about his love of horror, and the making of the film:
I loved Oddity and it's very clear from watching the film how much you love the horror genre. Can you talk about your early experiences watching horror movies?
Damian Mc Carthy: My parents had a VHS store when I was growing up, so I was always in the horror section. My dad was a big horror fan, so he was always showing me '80s movies, like Poltergeist and Alien. So that's where the love of it began, and I just wanted to know more about it,...

Horror movies are a dime a dozen, so it's imperative that we celebrate the good ones when they arrive. Regrettably, audiences often miss out on a novel new entry to the genre due to bad or misleading marketing, poorly timed release dates, or an inability to grasp a unique concept, causing a potential blockbuster to flame out at the box office. On many occasions, such pictures will earn solid reviews from critics and go on to achieve cult status thanks to solid word-of-mouth. In other instances, however, many impeccably made horror pictures needlessly fade into obscurity after bombing in theaters and never find the success they deserve.
Well, I'm here to put an end to the madness. I've scoured the World Wide Web and located a handful of horror box office bombs with great RottenTomatoes scores in dire need of more attention. Some of these entries, like John Carpenter's classic "The Thing,...

A few months ago, Paramount and Miramax announced that they are reviving the Scary Movie horror parody series to bring a Scary Movie 6 to theatres sometime in 2025 – and that announcement has inspired us to go back and revisit the earlier entries in the franchise. Last month, we covered the original Scary Movie, and now time for Scary Movie 2 (watch it Here) to get the Revisited treatment. You can hear all about it in the video embedded above.
Directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans from a screenplay written by the team of Shawn Wayans, Marlon Wayans, Alyson Fouse, Greg Grabianski, Dave Polsky, Michael Anthony Snowden, and Craig Wayans, Scary Movie 2 has the following synopsis: As the supernatural extension of the first film, Scary Movie 2 casts its satirical eye on such iconic classics as The Exorcist, House on Haunted Hill, and Poltergeist, as well as the more recent films Hannibal and What Lies Beneath.

It’s been 15 long years since Sam Raimi last helmed a film in the genre he knows best, but the filmmaker is now finally returning to the horror arena with a new project. After a few fumbled forays in the Disney big-budget machine, Raimi is now attached to direct the horror thriller Send Help.
Set up at 20th Century Studios, Deadline reports the tone of the two-hander set on a desert island falls “somewhere between Rob Reiner’s Stephen King adaptation Misery and Robert Zemeckis’ classic Castaway.” Scripted by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift, a theatrical release is planned for the project.
While Raimi has had his hand in a number of horror features as a producer the last decade or so, with the Evil Dead, Poltergeist, and The Grudge reboots, as well as Crawl, Don’t Breathe, and more, it’s beyond exciting to see him return behind the camera for a genre outing.

Any cinephile will likely be able to tell you about the first time a film scared the bejeezus out of them. For people of my generation, Tobe Hooper's 1982 film "Poltergeist" has a lot to answer for. Because the film bore the name of Steven Spielberg as its producer, and because it was only rated PG (it was made before the inception of the PG-13 rating), Hooper's monstrous horror movie was seen by many young children, unaware of the nightmares that lay within. "Poltergeist" featured a killer clown, a man-eating tree, and a scene where a man, possessed by the evil of the house, pulls all the skin off his own face.
Kids exposed to such horrors at an early age either withdraw from movies altogether ... or become horror filmmakers themselves. It's hard to deny the glorious, visceral power of a good, traumatic movie scare.

It’s a shame that The Exorcism, co-written and directed by Joshua John Miller — the son of The Exorcist actor Jason Miller — is a sloppy and unsatisfying genre exhumation. Miller and co-author M.A. Fortin flaunted oodles of metatextual proficiency with their superb horror-comedy The Final Girls that are nowhere to be found in their sophomore feature. Miller’s direction chases New Nightmare and Scream 3 highs by seeking inspiration from supposed haunted productions like The Exorcist and Poltergeist, but behind-the-scenes perspectives are frequently and confusingly dropped like a hot potato. The Exorcism fails the prospect of a bible-verse-chanting exorcism on a horror film set, spiraling from mundanity into a third act that abandons conceptual intrigue for the most forgettable finale imaginable.

Paramount Pictures has launched the first official trailer for Parker Finn's eagerly awaited Smile 2, a sequel to his 2022 psychological supernatural horror smash hit that was a critical and commercial success globally back in 2022.
The upcoming follow-up stars Naomi Scott (Power Rangers; Aladdin) as global pop sensation Skye Riley. who before embarking on her new world tour, "begins experiencing increasingly terrifying and inexplicable events. Overwhelmed by the escalating horrors and the pressures of fame, Skye is forced to face her dark past to regain control of her life before it spirals out of control."
In addition to Scott, the supporting cast features Rosemarie DeWitt, Kyle Gallner, Lukas Gage, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Peter Jacobson, Raúl Castillo, Dylan Gelula, and Ray Nicholson.
With Kyle Gallner reprising his role as Joel, it sounds like the sequel will pick up almost immediately after the events of the previous installment with Joel having inherited the...

The year of 2022 was certainly fruitful for scary movie tales, as we saw such genre’s gems as Pearl, Barbarian, and Scream. However, the best jumpscare flick of 2022 is, undoubtedly, Parker Finn’s Smile that rekindled people’s love for such horrors.
Following a therapist who witnesses a bizarre suicide of her patient and later sees horrifying visions tormenting her, this movie became a worldwide commercial success. It managed to rake in more than 100x its budget of $17 million, grossing $217.4 million.
Such a success can be explained by the fact that Smile perfectly timed jumpscares with those sinister smiles and at the same time didn’t forget about exploration of the protagonist’s deep trauma, enhancing the audience’s feeling of discomfort and unease.
However, the recently unveiled trailer of its upcoming sequel teases us with a more curious premise. Smile 2 is going to center on a pop star...

As we reported last week, billboards promoting a previously unheard of pop star named Skye Riley recently popped up in Los Angeles and London, there’s a Skye Riley fan account on Instagram, an official website – and these promos came with the promise that the new single “Blood on White Satin” was set to be released on June 18th. Which was a viral marketing way of letting us know the teaser trailer would be arriving today. But yes, the single was also released:
