Portugal’s Sardinha em Lata and Latvia’s Atom Art have boarded two new projects – “Saari 2” and “Taste Buddies” respectively – at Cartoon Forum, the biggest European animation event devoted to TV series.
Both series are lead-produced by Helsinki and Barcelona-based Pikkukala, run by Pablo Jordi. “Saari 2” marks a new installment of the first series produced by Pikkukala. It was sold to more than 20 territories and already counted Sardinha em Lata as the associate animation studio. A preschool series, “Saari 2” follows the adventures and world discovery of an octopus, a lady owl, a small girl and a bohemian bird on the Saari island over 52 episodes.
“‘Saari’ is a magic universe full of nature, music, and positive values that has delighted children all around the world,” Diogo Carvalho of Sardinha em Lata told Variety. “As a co-producer, we are very excited to work with Pikkukala in bringing this new season to the new generations of kids.

Michael Caine had an interesting run of genre flicks starting in the late ‘70s. The Swarm (1978) was laughed off the screen, Dressed to Kill (1980) was enjoyed by audiences and critics alike, and The Hand (1981) dropped his batting average once again. Nestled in between all those was The Island (1980), a killer pirate movie from the author of Jaws and directed by the man behind The Bad News Bears. What could go wrong? Well, everything, according to most folk. It’s an odd one to be sure, but the wild tonal shifts that prevent the ship from staying on a clear course make it a fascinating treasure that gets better with each viewing.
Released in June by Universal, The Island had a surefire pedigree for success; the Jaws juggernaut of producers Zanuck and Brown and author Peter Benchley (here, adapting his own novel) promised a good time to be had by all.

For quite some time now, the folks at Scream Factory have been hard at work on a Collector's Edition Blu-ray of the late, great Wes Craven's The Serpent and the Rainbow. Today, they have rewarded fans' patience by revealing the release's official list of special features, and they are well worth the wait.
In addition to a fresh HD transfer taken from The Serpent and the Rainbow's original inter-positive, this Collector's Edition Blu-ray also includes a new commentary with lead actor Bill Pullman and a "making of" featurette with an impressive number of interviews. Scream Factory will release this special Blu-ray on February 23rd:
Press Release: Loyal fans of legendary director Wes Craven (Scream, The People Under the Stairs, A Nightmare on Elm Street) know well the terrifying story of one man's nightmarish journey into the eerie and deadly world of voodoo from the 1988 horror cult classic The Serpent And The Rainbow,...

It’s been a couple months since the last edition of What’s Up Doc? placed Michael Moore’s surprise world premiere of Where To Invade Next at the top of this list and in the meantime much shuffling has taken place and much time has been spent on various new endeavors (namely my Buffalo-based film series, Cultivate Cinema Circle). Finally taking its rightful place at the top, D.A. Pennebaker and Chris Hagedus’ Unlocking the Cage is in the midst of being scored by composer James Lavino, according to Lavino’s own personal site. Though the project has been taking shape at its own leisurely pace, I’d expect to see the film making its festival debut in early 2016.

Lovers of odd and neglected vintage cinema can rejoice in the repackaging of Michael Ritchie’s weird sophomore title, Prime Cut. With all the menace of a Dick Francis novel and a perverse comedic streak akin to the tastes of John Waters, this misbegotten feature hasn’t received the notable following it deserves for one glaring reason—it’s increasingly warped treatment of women, which may have seemed enlightened for the period, but eventually only adds to the problematic misogyny that never abates. As far as its handling of more sensational, exploitational elements, Ritchie and screenwriter Robert Dillon manage to smooth its edges with breakneck pacing, sarcastic repartee, and a handful of impressively orchestrated face-offs.

Take a look at the end credits of any given Sundance preemed title, and you’ll more than likely find the name of Michelle Satter in the “special thanks” portion. Just how all encompassing is the Sundance Institute support in helping spread filmmaker’s wings? With a whopping fifteen yearly labs, it goes without saying, that there are many folks that got a leg up thanks to Satter and co.
Fittingly and not surprisingly, the month of September is when the festival portion (programming) gets into high gear, and it’s also when the 2014 Sundance Institute Music & Sound Design Labs (Sundance Institute and Skywalker Sound) help out with the docu branch. Now in its second year, lucky folks Marc Silver, Mike Day, Anna Sandilands and Ewan McNicol, Bill Ross and Turner Ross (see pic of duo above) are being paired with some audibly cool folk.

He has one of the most recognisable faces in Hollywood – so why has the Pacific Rim star spent so much of his career hiding behind prosthetics? And why is that all changing now?
The living embodiment of John Waters' clarion casting-call for "faces that startle, not soothe", actor Ron Perlman has the hardest-working face in show-business. His head, that giant windswept crag of a cranium, is a thing of beauty that's usually been cast in ugly roles. His film debut was as a Neanderthal in Quest for Fire; his most famous role, leonine, not simian, was opposite Linda Hamilton in Beauty and the Beast – I'll let you guess which he was; and his happiest collaboration and hugest success was playing the son of the devil himself, in Guillermo Del Toro's Hellboy.
That's the other thing about that head. More often than not in Perlman's career it has been swaddled,...

Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012) 20th Century Fox Blu-ray and DVD Available Now
Six-year-old Hushpuppy (fearless newcomer Quvenzhané Wallis) lives in the “Bathtub,” a southern Louisiana bayou community far removed from the civilized world. Her father Wink (Dwight Henry), a poor fisherman, keeps her at arm’s length but ensures her well-being within the cultural confines of their rough-and-tumble society. Seen through the eyes of the feisty Hushpuppy, the lines between myth and reality are blurred. An impending storm coincides with the melting of the arctic ice caps (and the thawing of some mythical creatures), which changes the world of the Bathtub forever. This heartbreaking little fable came out of nowhere last summer after building some positive buzz on the festival circuit. Shot on 16mm film for under $2 million, Beasts is a true independent film: a fiercely original and moving...

When I was growing up in Texas, there was a channel that showed the most outrageous horror films, and the majority of the time, they were even uncensored. The problem is, as you grow older, it becomes increasingly harder and harder to find these films. For a nostalgia buff like myself, this is criminal. Fortunately, for myself and I’m certain many others, there’s Scream Factory, the new horror based off-shoot of the great label, Shout Factory.
So, it’s with great pleasure that we announce that on September 18, 2012, Shout! Factory is releasing Halloween II Collector’s Edition and Halloween III: Season of the Witch 30th Anniversary Special Collector’s Edition on Blu-ray and DVD. These two films have long been unavailable on home video and frankly, now’s the time to buy! They’ll be releasing tins of titles over the next couple of months, like They Live...

There are all kinds of producers: hucksters, hustlers, con men and schlockmeisters. Some are in it for the glory, some like to walk the red carpet with a starlet on their arm. For some, the biggest award is a box office hit and it doesn’t matter what kind of crap they throw on the screen to earn it. There are producers like Harvey Weinstein who will spend more money to promote himself to an Oscar win than he does on actually making the Oscar-winning film. And there are producers like Joel Silver who once said the only proper role for women in film was either as a dead body or naked.
And there are those – who, to be honest, may also have a touch of all of this – who are mainly driven by a desire to make good movies. Like Dick Zanuck.
I don’t think anyone will argue...

There are a handful of kick-ass specialty labels out there who make a habit of bringing beloved genre classics (and sometimes not-so-classic classics) back to life on Blu-ray and DVD with releases that show real TLC for the films and the fans. Arrow Video, Blue Underground and Synapse are a few of the best, but one that ranks just as high on the list is Shout! Factory. Their mainstay has been older TV shows, but they also offer the Roger Corman Cult Classics line as well as a brand new co-venture with South Korea’s Cj Entertainment. They’ve just announced a new line called Scream Factory that will focus on releasing Blu-rays/DVDs of horror films and thrillers from the 1980′s. The debut releases due this September include Halloween II and Halloween III: Season of the Witch, both loaded with extras. As exciting as these will be the best news (for me at least) can be...

The lavish lifestyles of Hollywood’s more famous actors and filmmakers may hint at a world of glamour and cash, but as this list proves, the process of actually putting a movie together is rarely a dignified process. What follows is a lengthy catalogue of ill-advised location choices, tantrums, dreadful acts of God, spiked bowls of soup, ruined studios, bruised egos, broken bones and shattered dreams.
For the prospective filmmaker, this article could be read as a cautionary tale of just how badly wrong a production can go – though in order to keep the tone relatively light, we’ve excised those film productions that ended in tragedy (you’ll have to look elsewhere to discover the sad stories behind Twilight Zone: The Movie and The Crow).

Why wouldn't you take a trip that sees Michael Caine riding a giant wasp or Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson pinging berries off his chest?
You probably weren't expecting a sequel to 2008's Journey to the Centre of the Earth 3D. And this is probably because you forgot that 2008's Journey to the Centre of the Earth even existed. That's not your fault – it was one of those gimmicky films from the early days of digital 3D that basically acted as a placeholder for Avatar.
But now there's a sequel to Journey to the Centre of the Earth, of sorts. It bears the clunky title of Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, and there's been a radical overhaul since the first outing. Brendan Fraser has been replaced with Dwayne Johnson, there's a mysterious island instead of the centre of the Earth and it's a gimmicky film from the dying days of digital...

South African actor Zakes Mokae was featured as Dargent Petraud, the snarling antagonist with supernatural powers, in Wes Craven’s 1988 thriller The Serpent and the Rainbow. He was seen in numerous other films and television productions, including many in the Sci-Fi/Horror/Fantasy genres.
Mokae was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, on August 5, 1935. He began working in theatre in the 1950s, and his roles often brought him into conflict with the ruling Apartheid system in South Africa. He was forced into exile, and continued his acting career overseas.
He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London in the early 1960s. He appeared on television in episodes of such series as “Danger Man,” and was seen in small roles in the films The Comedians (1967) and Fragment of Fear (1970).

Is there any more exciting film staple than pirates? Pillaging, raping, kidnapping, cannon-firing, parrot-owning, Sicilian-beating, Keith Richards-loving, one leg missing, singing and dancing pirates! And now we can add real-life pirates to the list thanks to those pesky Somalian rapscallions who've been terrorizing the coast of Africa for the past several years. Per Variety, Columbia Pictures has hired Billy Ray to write a film based on the five-day hostage drama that played out earlier this year. More specifically, the film will center on Captain Richard Phillips whose life story rights as well as the rights to his upcoming book were optioned by Columbia. Phillips was held hostage by pirates before being rescued by Navy Seals. Spoiler alert! Ray's most recent work as screenwriter includes State of Play, Breach, and Flightplan. He also has a Westworld remake and the potential Ryan Reynolds vehicle Motorcade on his plate as well. This project is easily a year or more...

I’m extremely happy that the fine fiends at Fango have given me this tiny corner of the world weird web to rant about whatever slice of cinema shakes my creepy tree. Who else would allow me to throw down truth about director John Frankenheimer (The Manchurian Candidate)’s 1996 adaptation of H.G. Wells influential science fiction/horror shocker The Island Of Doctor Moreau, a movie loathed by most, forgotten by many, unseen by legions and only admired by a few filmy freaks like myself?
