Keeley Hawes and Max Beesley are back to bring a bit of drama and sci-fi entertainment in the first-ever TV adaptation of the John Wyndham novel. With the story having already been adapted for the big screen twice in ‘The Village of The Damned, creator and writer David Farr infuses a socially relevant update to an outdated story.
The series, which is set in the small English commuter town of Midwich, follows the town’s inhabitants after encountering a complete electrical blackout one night. Befalling a blackout which sees every resident fall unconsciously only to wake the following day with some of its female inhabitants having mysteriously fallen pregnant.
In the first major change Farr has made to the original story, Hawes plays the show’s protagonist, psychotherapist Dr Susannah Zellaby. Having been absent from the town on the night of the event, Zellerby returns to find her own vulnerable...

The setting of a modern Nordic housing estate may be different but the chilling elements of Eskil Vogt's latest film have a long and successful lineage that includes the likes of The Turn Of The Screw, The Midwich Cuckoos and any number of Stephen King books. The kids, you see, are not quite all right. Take nine-year-old Ida (Rakel Lenora Fløttum), for example. She's just moved to the estate with her mum, dad and older sister Anna (Alva Brynsmo Ramstad), who has autism. You can see Ida knows it's wrong to pinch her sibling but there's a frustration and loneliness that fuels her to do it anyway, egged on, perhaps, by the fact that Anna doesn't seem to feel it.
When Ida meets the similarly aged Ben (Sam Ashraf) - who notably is sporting a large bruise that signposts trouble at home - it seems like a positive friendship might be.

For the past two Mays, Hollywood’s studio lots have remained quiet during the week they should be buzzing with the world’s top international acquisitions execs, excitedly chomping down on In-n-Out burgers and squeezing into grand theater halls at the annual LA Screenings.
Normal service will be resumed next week, as in-person screenings return for the first time since 2019 following the (seeming) end of the worst of the Covid pandemic. Execs are closing down their Zoom apps and instead eyeing up lunches in the sun and the programs that have most caught their eye during pilot season. As one UK buyer says: “It’s not quite as fun chatting over a cheese sandwich at home than fine dining in Los Angeles.”
But it’s hardly a secret that the LA Screenings aren’t exactly what they once were to the international TV community, with many shows taken off the...

Bleecker Street has bought a new thriller starring Julie Delpy, Richard E. Grant and Daryl McCormack.
“The Tutor” marks the feature directorial debut of Alice Troughton, who’s known for directing TV shows such as “Baghdad Central,” “A Discovery of Witches” and “The Midwich Cuckoos.”
Written by Alex MacKeith, “The Tutor” follows an aspiring young author, hungry for recognition and success, who takes a tutoring position at a legendary writer’s estate. Soon, the young tutor realizes he is engulfed in his hero’s complicated family legacy, which holds a deadly past and threatens his own future. The film is billed as “a high-class thriller” that examines class, ambition and the lengths people will go to achieve — and cling to — social status.
Bleecker Street, which has picked up U.S. rights, is planning a 2023 theatrical release.
Poison Chef’s Camille Gatin, Jeva Films’ Cassandra Sigsgaard, Egoli Tossell Pictures’ Judy Tossell and Constellation Prods.

“In Their World, Adults Are Not Allowed… To Live.” So runs the chilling tagline for the 1984 cult classic horror Children of the Corn, based on the short story by horror maestro Stephen King. Set in an agricultural town in Nebraska, the film tells the story of 12-year-old Isaac, a real little charmer who indoctrinates the local children into a religious cult that slaughters anyone over 18! The film, which cost under $1million to make, was a smash hit and spawned a horror franchise. To celebrate the release of a lavish Arrow Limited Edition box set of the trilogy, including the original film in Ultra High Definition, here’s a round-up of some other horror films featuring problematic pint-sizers which you won’t want to turn your back on for a moment…

Exclusive: Sky drama The Midwich Cuckoos has become the latest high-profile UK shoot to experience a temporary delay after a crew member tested positive for coronavirus.
The shoot resumed today (August 2) after a two-day hiatus, Deadline has confirmed. The crew member registered a positive result during regular testing and did not come into close contact with other personnel on the shoot. They continue to self-isolate at home.
The shutdown was precautionary and allowed wider Pcr tests to be conducted; further cast and crew continue to be tested twice a week as per Sky policy.
“Throughout this time, the safety of our colleagues and customers remains our number one priority,” said a Sky spokesperson. “The Midwich Cuckoos production was temporarily suspended with a single crew member, who did not come into close contact with others, now self-isolating after testing positive for Covid. Psychomania tells of a group of n’er-do-well teens, led by a rich and mean-spirited young man, who skip school, ride motorcycles, and cause trouble and general panic wherever they go. They dub themselves The Living Dead and enjoy causing death and chaos at nearly every turn. However, if things seem bad in the little English village in which they reside, they take a decided turn for the worse when Tom Latham (Nicky Henson) discovers his psychic mother and the mysterious butler Shadwell (George Sanders) harbor a shocking secret—the key to life after death.
It seems that Mrs. Latham (Beryl Reid) and her husband made a long-ago deal with the devil for immortality. The couple committed suicide only to come back from the dead. Unfortunately, the late Mr. Latham found out he wasn’t a true believer and never made it back across. But Mrs.

Some very sad news is being reported today, as actor Peter Vaughan has passed away at the age of 93.
BBC News and multiple other sources shared this statement from Vaughan's agent, Sally Long-Innes:
"This is to confirm that very sadly Peter Vaughan passed away at approximately 10.30 this morning. He died peacefully with his family around him."
Many modern-day viewers know Vaughan as Maester Aemon on Game of Thrones, but his screen career stretches back to the ’50s.
A highly-regarded character actor, Vaughan's credits include Village of the Damned (1960), Two Living, One Dead, Die! Die! My Darling!, Haunted, Treasure Island (1968), Sudden Terror, Porridge, Brazil, Mountains of the Moon, Dandelion Dead, Murder Most Horrid, The Crucible (1996), and the aforementioned Game of Thrones.
Vaughan's legacy will surely live on through the people he worked with, the fans who admired his work, and his incredible presence onscreen. Our thoughts go out to Vaughan's...

Did fantasy dramas Chocky, The Box Of Delights and Dramarama leave an impression on you as a kid? Revisit those nightmares here...
Spooky, always magical and occasionally downright scary dramas are the bedrock of kids' television. For me, the pinnacle of this sort of programme was reached in the 1980s. The decade saw a new approach to both traditional and contemporary drama by both UK broadcasters: ITV committed itself to regular seasons of children's plays with Dramarama (1983-89), a kind of youth version of the venerable BBC Play For Today (1970-84), which saw the 1988 television debut of one David Tennant. The BBC, building upon an impressive body of work from the early 70s onwards, produced some of its very best family drama in this era, embracing cutting edge technology to bring treats like The Box Of Delights (1984) and The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe (1988) to the screen.

Jack Clayton's masterpiece, one of the greatest cinematic ghost stories, is ill-served by this lowbrow trailer that sells it like a cheap Eurotrash import. Although not a commercial success at the time, it has since been hailed as one of the best British films of the 1960s, with a powerhouse performance by Deborah Kerr as the frightened, possibly deranged governess. Her chilling charges are played by Martin Stephens (Village Of The Damned) and, in her film debut at 11 years of age, Pamela Franklin. ...

Comics can touch our lives in interesting ways. A college kid has an epiphany: the rapper he’s listening to while reading The Fantastic Four just made a Doctor Doom reference. Or maybe a young adult comes to terms with a previous attempt at ending their own life – through a comic’s creator coming to terms with the same thing in the pages of her art. Two middle aged people get a second shot at love, realizing they both adore Gaiman’s Sandman. Occasionally more than just words and pictures on a page, comics can be the tendrils between us.
Warren Ellis’ long running web-comic Freakangels holds a special place in my heart. But before I get to that, let me explain why Freakangels deserves to be reread years after its conclusion.

What true geek doesn't love a great science fiction film? Ever since I saw E.T. in the movie theater as a kid I was hooked on sci-fi. Over the years I've gone back and watched a ton of older films before my time, and continue to enjoy the awesomeness of this genre. Vimeo user 60fotogramas created a fantastic supercut that pays homage to the best sci-fi movies ever made. He calls it "Sci-Fi: Since 1902," and says:
This is a montage of some of the best science fiction films ever made. A total of 62 films ordered by release year, from 1902 to the present. Thanks for watching, enjoy.
I've included a list of all the movies in the video below:

1927- Metropolis
1929- Fraud in Mond
1931- Frankenstein
1933-The invisible Man

On Saturday in the shadow of Westminster Abbey, amidst the power-hungry elite of Whitehall and Downing Street, gathered an even more sinister and corrupting influence. Darth Vader rubbed shoulders with evil twins, corrupted children, vampires, zombies and even Jack the Ripper. Overseeing this evil conclave were directors whose films were so depraved that sometimes sick bags were supplied to the audience.
Horror film buffs were of course overjoyed at the fantastic selection of stars at this Hammer and Horror Film event. Representing the Bond girls were Caroline Munro, Caron Gardner, Martine Beswick and Madeline Smith.

Every year, we here at Sound On Sight celebrate the month of October with 31 Days of Horror; and every year, I update the list of my favourite horror films ever made. Last year, I released a list that included 150 picks. This year, I’ll be upgrading the list, making minor alterations, changing the rankings, adding new entries, and possibly removing a few titles. I’ve also decided to publish each post backwards this time for one reason: the new additions appear lower on my list, whereas my top 50 haven’t changed much, except for maybe in ranking. Enjoy!

Deep-fried Twinkies and Oreos are on the menu while musical acts play out next to the food court, where bursts of fire light up the night sky. This festival has a clear mission: to promote women of African descent, in front of and behind the camera. The result is a spread of films from around the globe that you're unlikely to see anywhere else. Family drama Elza is the first female-directed feature from Guadeloupe; Pariah charts the coming out of a Brooklyn lesbian; and Black is a polished Senegalese action-thriller. When I was asked to review the Queen Mary's Dark Harbor, I jumped at the chance.
Beyond this Halloween haunted attraction, I'd never been aboard the Queen Mary, but had heard many stories of the real ghosts within its walls. I decided to step aboard the ship before hitting the first maze and was delighted by its Art Deco architecture.
As I walked the narrow hallways, they seemed endless and I felt a strange tension in the air. Hit with a feeling of natural dread, I had a feeling this night would be special.
Spoilers Ahead: Minutes later in the dock area, the "Monster Run" kicked off the night with a pair of screaming "victims" running into the maze area as an army of ghostly zombies chase them dressed as sailors and cruise passengers. This bloody parade introduced us to the cast of characters we'd...

One of my absolute "Do Not Miss" attractions every year is "The Queen Mary- Dark Harbor". Living in Los Angeles, there is always plenty of creepy around, but its always a similar kind of Creep. The Queen Mary gives you something more. There are truly scary mazes within the ship (including the real life haunted Pool area) as well as the all new Dead Rise! My personal favorite is The Village of the Damned, which is a sort of Hills have Eyes Village…...

Choosing my favourite horror films of all time is like choosing between my children – not that I have children, but if I did, I am sure I would categorize them quite like my DVD collection. As with all lists, this is personal and nobody will agree with every choice – and if you do, that would be incredibly disturbing. Also, it was almost impossible for me to rank them in order, but I tried. I based my list taking into consideration three points:
1- Technical accomplishments / artistry and their influence on the genre.
2- How many times I’ve revisited the films and how easily it makes for a repeated viewings.
3- Its story, atmosphere and how much it affected me when I first watched them.
Finally, there are many great films such as The Witchfinder General, The Wickerman and even Hour Of The Wolf that won’t appear here. I...

Lynne Ramsay's superb version of the Lionel Shriver novel tackles the mess left behind for the mother of a teenage killer
Cinema's worst ever case of post-natal depression is the subject of this compelling psycho-horror nightmare from Lynne Ramsay, adapted from the novel by Lionel Shriver.
It is a movie which is a skin-peelingly intimate character study and a brilliantly nihilist, feminist parable: what happens when smart progressive career women give birth to boys: the smirking, back-talking, weapon-loving competitive little beasts that they have feared and despised since their own schooldays?
Producer-star Tilda Swinton brings her A-game to the role of Eva, the gaunt and haunted middle-aged woman living through an unending hell: her teenage son Kevin is in prison for committing a Columbine-style atrocity at his high school and she is perpetually assaulted and abused by the bereaved parents. Eva is simultaneously at the centre of this atrocity...

My mailman brings me good things and today what he brought was a copy of Severin's freshly remastered DVD edition of British cult biker horror Psychomania!
Psychomania stars Beryl Reed (Beast In The Cellar) and, in his last performance, George Sanders (Village Of The Damned) who perfect a formula to return from the grave via some sort of satanic toad worship. Said formula is then used by young Tommy and his biker gang, The Living Dead, who after offing themselves in a variety of creative ways, free-wheel back from the dead to wreak havoc on a small English town. This uber-black British horror-comedy (which has one of the greatest and most original soundtracks of its era) was a staple of late night TV for years but has never been seen like this thanks to a stunning new high definition transfer.
Though I've only had a chance to give the disc...

It seems logical to follow up last weekend’s retro trailer for The Village of the Damned with a look back at the sequel... Those darn damned kids: they’ve learned to blend in and look like any ol’ ordinary Earth kids, all the better to zap our brains and stuff. Like most alien invaders, the kids don’t ever seem to get around to having a good reason to want to take over the planet... or to destroy it. Aren’t they stuck here too? Or are their Et mommies and daddies going to come get them someday? You know, I used to think I was gonna get rescued from Earth by my real parents from outer space. I’m still waiting. Children of the Damned is available on DVD in Region 1 from Amazon.com and from Amazon.ca, and in Region 2 from Amazon U.K.

Ah, it was the beginning of the subgenre of horror movies about demonic children that would enjoy a solid run in the 1960s and 70. The Omen’s Damien is a direct descendant of the Midwich kids... and so is Jodie Foster’s overly precocious child prostitute of Taxi Driver. These were the dominant pop culture images of kids while Generation X was being born. Is it any wonder we’re such fuckups? The Village of the Damned is available on DVD in Region 1 from Amazon.com and from Amazon.ca, and in Region 2 from Amazon U.K.

Nothing says the Seventies quite like undead bikers terrorizing a small town, and if you've never seen the 1973 classic UK film Psychomania, then you're in luck as come October Severin Films will be releasing a special edition DVD of the flick directed by Don Sharp.
From the Press Release:
The grooviest zombie biker movie of them all is being exhumed and, after years of shoddy bootlegs and sub-par presentations, is getting the Special Edition treatment from Severin. Psychomania stars Beryl Reed (Beast in the Cellar) and, in his last performance, George Sanders (Village of the Damned), who perfect a formula to return from the grave via some sort of satanic toad worship. Said formula is then used by young Tommy and his biker gang, The Living Dead, who, after offing themselves in a variety of creative ways, free-wheel back from the dead to wreak havoc on a small English town.

Yup. 1970s British zombie bikers are being given a full restoration by the cult film lovers at Severin. The film is Psychomania, anybody who has ever seen a Severin restoration knows why this is good news, and I don't think I have any prayer of pitching it better than they do themselves so have at it, press release!

Every Sunday in October, Film School Rejects presents a horror film that was made before you were born and tells you why you should like it. This week, Old Ass Movies and 31 Days of Horror team up to present: Blood of the Vampire (1958) Synopsis: In what totally isn't a vampire movie, Dr. John Pierre (Vincent Ball) is sent to prison for doing a blood transfusion (an illegal practice in the 19th century) where he starts working for the mad scientist Callistratus (Donald Wolfit). Callistratus has his own sorted past with blood - notably that he was actually staked through the heart as a vampire and only remains alive through the blood experiments he's done and a sweet new heart. Luckily, he's got a ton of prisoners to kill and steal the red stuff from. Killer Scene: Although there are several great scenes, the opening is probably the best at creating the tone for the rest of the...
