- Tab Hunter plays 29-year-old cartoonist 'Paul Morgan', creator of a wildly popular daily comic strip called "Bachelor-at-Large" which chronicles the adventures of a young bachelor living in sunny Malibu surrounded by beautiful women and based on his own everyday life. The strip is essentially his diary.
Paul is perpetually surrounded by a beautiful young lady (or young ladies) in his life. Either he is pursuing her and gets over his head while trying to make a good impression or is himself being pursued and trying to get out of a relationship that is becoming too serious. It does not matter where he is, be it Malibu, on an ocean liner, London, Paris, or Madrid, there is always a charming and attractive woman and there is always some sort of complication. He sometimes moves from one girlfriend to the next in the same day.
Paul's rich-but-stingy playboy best friend, 'Peter Fairfield III' (Richard Erdman), is also a bachelor who, in addition to beautiful women and fashion, also loves fast cars. Whatever trouble the two manage to get themselves into and out, finds its way into the comic strip.
Paul's boss and owner of 'Comics, Inc.', 'John Larsen' (Jerome Cowan), is constantly hounding him to get his strips completed and sent in on time. Although often exasperated by his adventures, to the point of hiring another cartoonist as a precaution, "Bachelor-at-Large" is popular with readers and makes money, and so he puts up with Paul. Likewise, Paul's housekeeper 'Thelma' (Reta Shaw) does not approve of his lifestyle but sticks with him.
