What’s most shocking about the fact that it’s been 35 years since Mystery Science Theater 3000 began its run on Ktma in Minneapolis-St. Paul is the fact that it’s been only 35 years. Sporting a premise that’s gained added resonance since Covid redefined what it’s like to watch movies in isolation, the series has existed long enough—and in enough iterations—as to feel almost impervious to time, endlessly redefining itself as technology and media consumption mutate and grow, and, more frequently, as circumstances necessitate.
While the show’s hook—a human and their robots joke their way through bad movies—suggests a cynical outlook, its overriding imagination leaves room enough to enjoy both the films being watched and the jokes made at their expense. The classics that MST3K has yielded far exceed the limitations of this list’s format—to say nothing of the multitude of grace notes contained within,...

We’re betting on the ACMs to spread the wealth pretty evenly. In fact, the only artist we’re expecting to win more than once is Walker Hayes, who is tipped to win four awards, all for his breakthrough, crossover hit “Fancy Like”: Single of the Year as both artist and producer on the song, and Song of the Year as both artist and songwriter. He was also up for New Male Artist of the Year, whose results were announced in the days leading up to the ACMs, but...

Claudia Weill’s 1978 comic tale of a photographer trying to make it in New York is a gem whose emotional force comes from the female friendships at its heart
Claudia Weill’s insouciant New York comedy from 1978 is now rereleased: a little indie gem and lo-fi miracle whose emotional force catches you glancingly. Girlfriends now looks like a pop-cultural ancestor to any number of romcoms, as well as to Single White Female, TV’s thirtysomething (in which Melanie Mayron also starred) and Sex and the City, and Emma Seligman’s recent movie Shiva Baby.
Mayron stars as aspiring young photographer Suzie Weinblatt, an unassuming mix of Annie Hall and Alvy Singer. Suzie has to deal with a restless singleton life after her best friend and roommate Anne (Anita Skinner) moves out to get married to a supercilious guy called Martin (Bob Balaban) that Suzie doesn’t like very much, perhaps...

In Apple TV+’s deliciously dark comedy “Physical,” central protagonist Sheila Rubin, played brilliantly and compassionately by Rose Byrne, transforms from a San Diego housewife trying to make ends meet to the head of an incredibly lucrative and influential video aerobics empire. In the process, viewers meet two versions of Sheila, the first is a gorgeous, spandex-clad instructor with a gleaming white smile and an affect so enthusiastic it seems almost impenetrable, and the second is a deeply traumatized and self-critical housewife who struggles with incredibly low self-esteem and a terrible body image.

Perhaps the most clever idea in this prestigious throwback to potboilers of yore, The Woman in the Window, is how it upends the bourgeois escapism of most thrillers. While following child psychologist Anna Fox (Amy Adams), who suffers from agoraphobia and keeps herself locked inside her home, we get to luxuriate in a spacious New York brownstone, only to have all the fun taken out via Anna’s lonely nights falling asleep in front of the television and wandering around dead, empty rooms.
Things change when she finds herself quickly entangled in the lives of her across-the-street neighbors. Working their way into her home is Ethan (Fred Hechinger), a sensitive 16-year-old boy towards whom, due to her profession, she feels a natural empathy. Ethan draws into Anna’s orbit his abusive father Alistair and even a solo encounter with the family’s doting wife and mother Jane (Julianne Moore), who...

Outlander viewers and Scottish history buffs know that the Battle of Culloden left a bloody, indelible mark on the nation of Scotland. With the help of experts, Men in Kilts‘ season finale finds Sam Heughan and Graham McTavish going in-depth on exactly how the brutal fight played out.
To start, we get a quick overview of the battle. It took place in Spring of 1746, and was a fight between the Jacobites and the British Government Army at Culloden Field in the Scottish Highlands. It barely lasted an hour, “but its legacy has endured for centuries,” Graham tells us. The British...

Despite a shuffling performer line-up due to multiple positive tests for Covid-19, the Country Music Association Awards were held on Wednesday at an in-person ceremony at Nashville’s Music City Center.
In the days leading up to the ceremony, four acts — Rascal Flatts, the recently renamed Lady A, Florida Georgia Line and “I Hope You’re Happy Now” singer Lee Brice — were forced to pull out from the show after either being exposed to or testing positive for Covid.
But as they say, the show must go on, and the Reba McEntire and Darius Rucker-hosted ceremony went ahead as planned, honoring some of the biggest names in country music.
Eric Church took home the night’s top prize for Entertainer of the Year, which came up for grabs this year after seven-time winner Garth Brooks took himself out of the running. “It’s time for somebody else to hold that award,...

NBCUniversal has selected the directed the 2020-2021 classes for the Female Forward and the Emerging Director Program. The scripted directing initiatives aim to increase representation of female and ethnically diverse male and non-binary directors, respectively, by creating a pipeline into scripted television. The announcement was made by Janine Jones-Clark as Executive Vice President, Inclusion – Talent & Content, NBCUniversal Film, Television and Streaming.
Both initiatives remain unique within the industry in that they are the only network programs to guarantee that participating directors will helm an episode of primetime television by the conclusion of the program. Program directors shadow on up to two episodes of their assigned NBC scripted series before receiving an in-season assignment to helm an episode of the same series.

In the The Boys comics, The Female is a nameless killing machine that acts as The Boys's muscle. When she's not working for The Boys, she take on jobs for the local mafia to satiate her need to kill. In the TV series, she's finally given a name, Kimiko, along with an entirely new backstory, with actress Karen Fukuhara portraying her as a misunderstood yet complicated individual. The amount of growth we see Kimiko go through during the first season is impressive: moving from practically feral with only a desire for revenge to being able to find a connection with Frenchie and The Boys. What's even more impressive is the emotion and heart that Fukuhara is able to get across without words since, due to Kimiko's trauma, she's mute.
Initially, Fukuhara was wary of the role because she felt Kimiko was too close to her role as Katana in Suicide Squad.

The mystery behind The Female has finally been solved. While fans have been enamored with The Female - real name Kimiko - since she made her debut in season one of The Boys, the origins of the sole superpowered member of the titular vigilante group have been a giant question mark. Through a series of supremely unfortunate events, the story behind how she came to be imprisoned in a Triad hideout underneath a grocery store in New York City is unraveled within the first three episodes of season two, released by Amazon Prime Video on Sept. 4.
Season two begins with the reveal that a new superpowered terrorist has been unveiled and a newly reunited Butcher and the Boys are tasked with the job to grab him and bring him to the government under Mallory's orders. When the ragtag group of vigilantes catch up to the super, they learn that he's Kimiko's estranged little brother,...

The nominations for the 54th CMA Awards are out this morning, and they don’t include country music legend Garth Brooks as a nominee for the Entertainer of the Year award.
That’s because Brooks voluntarily disqualified himself in late July, saying that he’s won too many times — seven, to be exact, including last year’s — and wants to give the opportunity to another artist.
It was a tweet from a fan that steered Brooks to the decision.
“It said, ‘Hey, man. This guy, why doesn’t he just step down (and leave) the entertainer for the next generation?’ 100% agree,” he told press according to The Tennessean. “It’s time for somebody else to hold that award.”
That leaves the possibilities open this year to Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban, Luke Combs and Eric Church. May the best country star win.

BBC America's Killing Eve returns for Season 3 in April with a new showrunner steering the spy drama.
BBC America's critical and fan darling Killing Eve is returning for a third season! Of course, there wasn’t even time for doubt, since the Killing Eve Season 3 announcement was made in April at the AMC Networks Summit (BBC America is co-owned by AMC and BBC Studios), only one day after the second season premiere. Interestingly enough, the network continued its preemptive renewal strategy in January 2020, giving an early order for Season 4!
Sandra Oh, Jodie Comer, and Fiona Shaw star in the series that follows MI6 operative Eve (Oh) as she tracks psychopathic assassin Villanelle (Comer)—or is it the other way around? It is based on Luke Jennings' Codename Villanelle book series.

Austin offers the usual eclectic mix of options for filmgoers this week. If the half-dozen new film openings don't interest you, check out the The Reconstruction of Asa Carter, which screens on Wednesday at the Violet Crown Cinema. This documentary tells the story of the notorious white supremacist Carter, who authored the critically acclaimed The Education of Little Tree, a "true story" (actually, a complete fabrication) about a Native American child.
