Brooklynite Irma Peterson, who has had a fiancée, Al, for fourteen years who isn't looking to get married, has a roommate, Jane Stacey, who is looking for a rich man to marry. Sharp-talking Al, who will never qualify for social security because he has never had a job, discovers Steve Laird and Seymour, working at an orange-juice stand, and promises to get them into show business. His attempts to con Jane's rich boss, Richard Rhinelander, who has his eye on Jane and she on him, cause many complications, especially since Irma is also involved. Another problem arises when Janes falls in love with Steve. Seymour stays above it all.
