This film did poorly at the box office, resulting in a loss of $170,000 ($2.65M in 2017) for RKO according to studio records.
"The Screen Guild Theater" broadcast a 30 minute radio adaptation of the movie on March 13, 1944 with Charles Laughton reprising his film role.
Charles Laughton, who plays the senior Mr. Tuttle, also played Capt. Bligh in 1935's "Mutiny on the Bounty." It is believed that some of the mutineers from the Bounty settled in Tahiti. So there is a good possibility that Tuttles, being Caucasian, were their descendants.
The 400,000 French francs Tuttle is paid for the salvaged ship would equate to about $11,510 at the time (1938) or about $198,000 in 2017.
