French Without Tears (1940)
Roland Culver: Cmdr. Bill Rogers
Quotes
-
Cmdr. Bill Rogers : Diana?
Alan Howard : Kenneth Lake's sister.
Cmdr. Bill Rogers : Oh, is she learning French too?
Alan Howard : Uh, no. She just stopped us from doing it.
-
Cmdr. Bill Rogers : Uh, what you're implying is that this girl is, uh, rather fast?
Alan Howard : Well, I'm not implying it, I'm saying it.
Cmdr. Bill Rogers : You sound admitted.
Alan Howard : Oh, dear me, no. Both Brian and I - for reasons that we won't go into now, are immune. Only I thought it as well to let you know before you meet her, that Diana Lake - oh, a dear girl in many ways, is a little unreliable in her emotional life.
-
Alan Howard : She loves getting innocent young men into cold water.
Cmdr. Bill Rogers : Well, personally, I rather like an early morning dip.
Alan Howard : An early morning dip?
Diana Lake : I quite agree with you, Cmdr. Rogers. I don't think there's anything nicer than a swim before breakfast.
-
Diana Lake : Oh, I suppose you find Alan a bit startling, don't you?
Cmdr. Bill Rogers : Oh, yes, he's a bit startling.
Diana Lake : Well, he's really very nice, but you mustn't take everything he says too seriously, because you see, he's just a teeny bit, you know, unbalanced.
[pointing to her head]
Cmdr. Bill Rogers : Oh, really?
Diana Lake : I thought it was well to warn you.
-
Diana Lake : [pointing to a picture on the wall] Oh, is that your boat?
Cmdr. Bill Rogers : [trying to hold back a look of disgust] Yes, that's my... boat.
-
Chris Neilan : Diana, you won't forget about our tourney?
Diana Lake : Of course not.
Alan Howard : Uh, Chris. Did Diana go into the water?
Chris Neilan : No, why?
Diana Lake : Why, Chris.
Alan Howard : Chris! You of all people - an early morning dipper. Why, I believe this girl could make you go for a bicycle tour in the Pyrenees, if she set her mind to it.
Cmdr. Bill Rogers : I once went for a bicycle tour in the Pyrenees.
Alan Howard : Really?
-
Diana Lake : Yes, poor Alan. I'm afraid he's got it very badly.
Cmdr. Bill Rogers : Got what?
Diana Lake : Oh, I don't know what this is. It's so funny, because from the way he behaved, there's many things he says about me. You'd think he hates me, wouldn't you?
Cmdr. Bill Rogers : Yes, you would. Doesn't he?
Diana Lake : Oh, no. Far from it.
Cmdr. Bill Rogers : Oh, heh, heh, well, you see... you mean he's rather keen on you?
Diana Lake : Oh, I don't want to give him away. It wouldn't be fair. But if he tries to give you the impression that I'm a scheming wrecker of men's lives, you needn't necessarily believe him.
Cmdr. Bill Rogers : No, of course I won't. But I don't quite see why he should, you know.
Diana Lake : Well, you see Commander Rogers, I like Alan. But I don't like him as much as, perhaps, he wants me to.
-
Alan Howard : You'd like anything which gives you the opportunity of coming down to breakfast in your bathing dress.
Diana Lake : Does it shock you, Alan?
Alan Howard : Unalterably!
Diana Lake : Well, I'll go and change then.
Alan Howard : Oh, don't bother. You've made one successful entrance. Don't spoil it by making another.
Cmdr. Bill Rogers : I don't think I quite understand you.
Alan Howard : Diana does.
-
Alan Howard : I suppose you're going to find this a rather change after your boat, commander.
Cmdr. Bill Rogers : You mean my ship, don't you?
Alan Howard : Your ship?
Cmdr. Bill Rogers : Yes, we call her a ship in the Navy.
-
Cmdr. Bill Rogers : This is my first time in France.
Alan Howard : Then you're bound to be a bit at sea, commander. Heh, heh, I thought that was rather good. Didn't you?
-
Diana Lake : Oh, good morning.
Alan Howard : Good morning, Diana. This is Commander Rogers.
Cmdr. Bill Rogers : [nodding to her] Miss Lake.
Diana Lake : How do you do.
Cmdr. Bill Rogers : How do you do.
Diana Lake : Oh, I had no idea you were arriving this morning.
Alan Howard : Hadn't you? You asked me what train he was coming by.
