Review

I am beginning to question whether I have seen the same movie as most of the reviewers here. There is a solid movie here behind a couple of minor unusual plot choices, but these reviews are just outright petty. The performances from James McAvoy and Claire Foy are fantastic. Don't listen to these reviews!

SPOILERS The detective abandoning the parents makes sense when considering that they are uncovering a major child trafficking ring. The London police probably don't want the people responsible for the trafficking ring to jump ship before being charged. As for who the kidnappers are and why they chose his son, it is explained in the movie !!
