Netflix will revisit a classic novel for its latest prestige series.
The streamer has formally greenlit East of Eden, a seven-episode limited series based on John Steinbeck’s 1952 novel. The book was previously adapted for a 1955 movie directed by Elia Kazan that was notable as James Dean’s first lead role.
Zoe Kazan, Elia Kazan’s granddaughter, is adapting the novel and will serve as co-showrunner with Jeb Stuart (Die Hard, Vikings: Valhalla). Florence Pugh heads the cast, with Christopher Abbott, Mike Faist (playing the role Dean had in the film) and Hoon Lee also starring. Fifth Season and Anonymous Content are producing.
“In the process of bringing this family saga to life, the resonance of my own familial connection to the material has not been lost on me,” Kazan said in a statement. “But it is Steinbeck’s writing — personal, shocking, profound and free — that has kept me enthralled...

Hoda Kotb, an NBC News mainstay who stepped up to co-anchor the flagship hours of NBC’s “Today” when longtime host Matt Lauer was ousted in 2017, will leave the program at the beginning of next year, opening not one, but two important roles at the network’s flagship morning franchise.
Speaking Thursday morning on the program, Kotb cited a desire to spend time with two young daughters. “I realized it was time for me to turn the page,” after a recent 60th birthday, she told colleagues on the program. She noted that she had children later in life and that “they deserve a bigger piece of my time pie that I have.” She is expected to continue to contribute to the program after she departs in early 2025.
Her shoes will be hard to fill. Kotb not only anchors the first two hours of “Today” with Savannah Guthrie, but she has...

Then came the reports that Neill Blomkamp was going to make a “RoboCop” film. Sadly, that never came to be. And now, it appears the best we can hope for is a “RoboCop” TV series from Prime Video.

Martin Scorsese, the Oscar-winning filmmaker behind some of cinema’s most iconic works, had planned to begin shooting two highly anticipated films back-to-back this year. One was a biblical epic, “The Life of Jesus,” based on Shūsaku Endō’s 1973 novel, and the other was a biopic about legendary singer Frank Sinatra. However, Variety has learned that both projects have been postponed, and neither will be filmed this year.
Scorsese’s “The Life of Jesus” was expected to be the first of the two projects to go into production. Although no official cast has been announced, one source with direct knowledge tells Variety the film is still in development. Scorsese is committed to making the movie about the Christian leader, which he is reportedly financing independently. He took a similar approach to his 2016 epic drama “Silence,” also adapted from an Endō novel. The filmmaker hoped to shoot in Israel, Italy, and Egypt,...

The charity was founded in 2005 by Campbell and raised money to combat poverty and support economically deprived young people through charity fashion shows.
Campbell told the AP on Thursday: “I’ve just found out today about the findings, and I am extremely concerned,” explaining she was not the person “in control” of Fashion for Relief or its spending.

There is no more prized possession in New York City on a sweltering summer day than a working air conditioning unit. Simon Hacker’s father-daughter comedy “Notice to Quit” understands this well, which is why the real estate broker it follows on this terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day keeps coming back to the bounteous promises an AC unit can offer. Taking place in all five boroughs of the city, Hacker’s frenzied film mirrors his mentors, the Safdie brothers, but ultimately falters by doing the very thing that AC unit would help ease: It lets us see it sweat.

Note: This story contains spoilers from the “Doctor Odyssey” series premiere.
“Doctor Odyssey” is the last in a wave of Ryan Murphy-produced dramas to premiere this fall — and it’s, by design, the most fun.
After the debuts of true crime dramas “American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez” and “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” and the FX serial killer drama “Grotesquerie,” the super-producer launched the breezy medical procedural starring Joshua Jackson Thursday on ABC. Equal parts “9-1-1” and “The Love Boat,” the show follows Dr. Max Bankman as he joins the crew of a luxurious cruise called the Odyssey as its on-board doctor, working alongside nurse Avery Morgan (Phillipa Soo), nurse Tristan Silva (Sean Teale) and Captain Robert Massey (Don Johnson).

While Finneas and Billie Eilish will always be siblings, they may eventually not always be producing music together.
During a recent interview with Guitar.com, Finneas said he’s been letting go of the reins some when it comes to music production for Eilish and helping her learn how to produce on her own. He previously produced the “Birds of a Feather” singer’s first three albums.
“I’ve been setting up Billie’s recording studio for her so she can do home production without me, because she’s very good at it!” the “Till Forever Falls Apart” artist said. “And it’s funny, I’ve been giving her, like, the bare minimum of stuff, just so that she learns it all.”
While Finneas has upgraded to a more professional gear set-up now, compared to his early production days, he knows it’s better to start with simple equipment.

Note: This story contains spoilers from the “9-1-1” Season 8 premiere.
“9-1-1” has cultivated a reputation for kicking off seasons with some impressive disasters. There was Season 2’s earthquake, Season 5’s LA blackout and Season 7’s sinking cruise ship. And who could ever forget the three-episode tsunami that opened Season 3? But Season 8’s Bee-nado may just fly to the top of this wild list.
“I was talking to Ryan Murphy, and he really loved the whole riff on ‘The Poseidon Adventure’ last season. He was like, ‘What are some other great ’70s disaster movies?’ And I’m like, ‘”The Swarm,”‘ which is maybe the worst one ever,” series showrunner co-creator and executive producer Tim Minear told TheWrap.
Minear does not recommend “anyone” sit down and watch Irwin Allen’s box office bomb about a swarm of killer bees that are on the verge of invading Texas. “I threw that out there,...

“Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” creator Ryan Murphy has reacted to the Menendez family’s latest statement, in which his series was described as “a phobic, gross, anachronistic, serial episodic nightmare.”
On Thursday, Murphy told Variety’s Marc Malkin, “The family’s response is predictable at best.”
“I find it interesting because I would like specifics about what they think is shocking or not shocking. It’s not like we’re making any of this stuff up. It’s all been presented before. What we’re doing is we’re the first to present it in one contained ecosystem. What’s grotesque about it?” Murphy questioned. “Tammi [and] the family, they have always done this and they did this recently — they say, ‘lies after lies’ — but then they don’t say what the lies are. They don’t back up anything.”

Lady Gaga is opening up about the inspiration behind her Joker: Folie à Deux companion album titled Harlequin.

“I think that for me, this idea of dual identities was always something that was a part of my music-making,” Gaga explained. “I was always creating characters in my music, and when I made Lee for Joker, she just really had this profound effect on me. The film had so much music in it, so much music that I love, and I was able to discover the character through the story, through the music that we did live every day as well as dance and the costumes and the makeup. Fascinated by Zendaya’s stunning looks at this year’s Met Gala? So is Pedro Almodóvar. In fact, the Spanish filmmaker told Vanity Fair Spain he wants to make a movie inspired by the actress and her stylist, Law Roach.
“I’ve asked about this guy, and they’ve told me that he’s almost as much of a diva as she is,” he told the outlet. “I’d love to make a film about them, a mix of ‘All About Eve’ crossed with ‘The Devil Wears Prada.'” [The interview is in Spanish, which we’ve translated using Google Translate.]
Roach has worked with numerous celebrities, including Céline Dion, Ariana Grande, Anya Taylor-Joy and Kerry Washington — but in 2023, he announced he would be working exclusively with “Challengers” star Zendaya in lieu of retiring.
He announced his retirement in March 2023, in a since-deleted Instagram post, writing, “If this business was just about clothes, I would do it for the rest of my life,...

True to its title, François Ozon’s new film “When Fall is Coming” is awash in the aesthetics of what people far younger than its octogenarian protagonist would call autumncore, with a bit of cottagecore for good measure. In the sleepy, picturesque Burgundy valley where it largely unfolds, the leaves are rusting and crisping, chunky knitwear is coming out of hibernation, and through the screen, you can just about feel the air turning cold enough to splinter. Yet as the film progresses, its timeline spanning months and then years, the weather never changes. The life of sweet-natured retiree Michelle (Hélène Vincent) is seemingly fixed in a perennial fall, as is the film’s mood of quiet, almost comforting melancholy — until, amid this appearance of strange, ochre-hued seasonal stasis, the temperature of proceedings takes a drastic turn south.

After a wild year of bankruptcy speculation, debt repayment extensions, revised credit ratings and a few billion dollars in box office earnings, the eternal theatrical optimist was ready to celebrate at Variety‘s annual Entertainment and Technology Summit in West Hollywood on Thursday.

Since July, the most-watched streaming program on the Samba TV Weekly Wrap Report has fallen into one of two buckets. Either it’s been a big-budget Max series built around popular IP or it’s been a Netflix release.
This week, the former reigns supreme as “The Penguin,” a spin-off from the 2022 film “The Batman,” sits atop the chart for the week of Sept. 16 to 22. The series’ first episode drew 3.2 million households over the first four days it was available on Max.
That’s even better viewership than Max’s last big hit this year, “House of the Dragon.” The first episode of the Game of Thrones spin-off drew 2.8 million households in its first four days, and it topped the streaming chart for the entirety of its second season run (and then some). It remains to be seen if “The Penguin” will be the new emperor, or if it will cede its crown next week.

That’s the sound of the police! No, but really, Ryan Murphy’s first responder drama “9-1-1” is pulling back into Station 118 for Season 8.
The series explores the “high-pressure experiences of first responders — including police officers, firefighters and dispatchers — who are thrust into the most frightening, shocking and heart-stopping conditions,” according to ABC’s description of the series.
In the midst of that, “the emergency responders must try to balance saving those who are at their most vulnerable with solving the problems in their own lives. The show draws from the real lives of first responders who regularly face situations that are often unpredictable, intense and uplifting at the same time.”
This next season, the second to air on ABC after the series was dropped by Fox, will kick off with the team fighting off a dangerous swarm of bees. Here’s everything you need to know about how to watch.

Samuel L. Jackson is still in shock at how fast Marvel got through his initial nine-picture deal.
The actor, who has played Nick Fury in a dozen projects in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, looked back at some of his most iconic characters in a recent interview with GQ magazine. He first appeared as the master strategist and superspy in 2008’s Iron Man but went on to star in eight more MCU films within a decade timespan.
“I knew I had a nine-picture deal,” Jackson said. “[Marvel Studios president] Kevin [Feige] said that, ‘We’re going to offer you a nine-picture deal.’ How long do you have to stay alive to make nine movies? It’s not the quickest process in the world. I didn’t know they were going to make nine movies in like two and a half years (Laughs). It’s just kind of crazy! Oh shit, I’m using up my contracts.

Mike Flanagan’s adaptation of the Stephen King Novella The Life of Chuck has landed distribution.
Neon will release the movie that premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, going on to win the audience award. The anthology film is told in three parts and focuses on the life, internal and external, of Charles Krantz (Tom Hiddleston). Karen Gillan, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Mark Hamill also star.
While Flanagan has adapted other King works, specifically in the horror genre, The Life of Chuck has drawn closer comparisons to Frank Darabont’s Shawshank Redemption.
Talking to THR ahead of TIFF, Flanagan said of speaking with King, “When we were doing The Life of Chuck, we talked a lot before production. He has an enormous amount of approvals on things like casting and other details. But when the movie goes, he stays very far away. He says, ‘The movie’s yours and the book is mine.
