The Locarno Film Festival will be celebrating multiple Oscar-winning Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón with a lifetime achievement award.
The prominent Swiss fest dedicated to global indie cinema noted that Cuarón is a five-time Academy Award winner who has written and directed a wide range of movies, spanning from low-budget films in Mexico like his 1991 debut “Love in the Time of Hysteria” and road trip movie “Y tu mamá también” to Hollywood blockbusters such as “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.” Cuarón embodies “the true spirit of a chameleonic contemporary artist able to master any assignment,” a Locarno statement said.
Three of Cuarón’s Oscar wins are for Netflix’s “Roma,” (2018), the director’s homage to the Mexico in which he grew up. The other two are for his direction and editing of Warner Bros.’ Sandra Bullock-starrer “Gravity” (2013), which he co-wrote with his son Jonás.

Marvel’s lengthy search for the directors of its next two “Avengers” movies might have finally reached its endgame.
The Hollywood Reporter and Variety say that Joe and Anthony Russo have entered talks with the studio to direct the next two films in the franchise. Marvel had previously announced that the studio’s Phase 6 slate of films would end with the movies “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” in 2026 and “Avengers: Secret Wars” in 2027. The former film was supposed to focus on Jonathan Majors’ villainous character Kang the Conqueror, who appeared in “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and five episodes of “Loki” and was being positioned as the primary antagonist in subsequent story arcs. Marvel parted ways with Majors following the guilty verdict in his assault and harassment trial in December 2023, but has yet to comment on whether the role will be recast or if the next “Avengers” film will still be titled “The Kang Dynasty.

The master of suspense is finally getting a 4K restoration for his final film.
Alfred Hitchcock’s “Frenzy,” which was also his sole R-rated feature, is being released at the Film Forum to celebrate its restoration. “Frenzy” stars Jon Finch, Barbara Leigh-Hunt, and Barry Foster; the feature is an adaptation of novel “Goodbye Piccadilly, Farewell Leicester Square,” released by Arthur La Bern in 1966. “Sleuth” playwright Anthony Shaffer adapted the book for Hitchcock’s 1972 film, which was Hitchcock’s second to last feature.
“Frenzy” follows a down-on-his-luck ex-Royal Air Force officer (Finch) who is on the run amid accusations of being The Necktie Strangler after his ex-wife is found dead. “Frenzy” is billed as Hitchcock’s penultimate film, and his first feature made in London after thirty years.
The official logline teases that “Frenzy” is Hitchcock’s “return to fiendish form and his most salacious, sordid picture.”

It may not seem like there is a lot to celebrate in Hollywood these days, but the 2024 Emmy Awards nominations provided joy for many this morning. “Shogun” and “The Bear” were some of the major winners in nomination totals And Netflix topped competitor HBO/Max with the most nominations overall with 107. But, leave it to Larry David to provide the most blunt reaction to his own Emmy Haul.

“Did you make the day?” That’s the first question financiers and production execs will ask after a first day — or, really, any day — of shooting. “Making the day” means completing all the scenes on the call sheet so that the production isn’t falling behind, something that can led to dropped scenes, budget overruns and more. But beyond the “making the day” question lies a deeper one: how is a production making the day? Rushed scenes, abandoned coverage and quickly made decisions can result in an on-time shooting schedule but diminished artistic results. That’s why this behind-the-scenes video of […]

Joe and Anthony Russo, who propelled “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Endgame” to stratospheric box office heights, may return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The filmmaking brothers are in early talks to direct 2026’s “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” and 2027’s “Avengers: Secret Wars,” which will conclude this stretch — known as the Multiverse Saga — of the MCU. The films will presumably be connected, à la the two-part story of 2018’s “Infinity War” and 2019’s “Endgame.”
Marvel Studios had been looking for filmmakers to tackle the ambitious back-to-back tentpoles after Destin Daniel Cretton (“Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”) departed “Kang Dynasty” in 2023. “Deadpool & Wolverine” director Shawn Levy was offered the gig but apparently passed on the projects. “Loki” creator Michael Waldron was recently hired to write the screenplay for “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” while “Secret Wars” doesn’t have a screenwriter attached at the moment.

Julia Garner might still be portraying the Material Girl Madonna in the future, but for now, she’s telling a different sort of origin story. In Natalie Erika James’ “Rosemary’s Baby” prequel, Garner leads a psychological thriller set in the haunted New York City apartment building that Roman Polanski made iconic in his 1968 horror classic.
Titled “Apartment 7A,” the Paramount+ feature takes place in 1965, prior to Polanski’s legendary horror classic “Rosemary’s Baby,” and explores what happened in the infamous Bramford Building before Rosemary moved in.
The official synopsis reads: “Ambitious young dancer Terry Gionoffrio (Garner) dreams of fame and fortune in New York City, but after suffering a devastating injury, an older, wealthy couple played by Dianne Wiest and Kevin McNally welcomes her into their home in the luxury apartment building the Bramford. When fellow resident and influential Broadway producer (Jim Sturgess) offers her another chance at fame, it...

You might say that this was inevitable, as a certain purple-colored Mad Titan once put it. Just when things were looking as dark as they have in a while over at Marvel Studios, a pair of very familiar figures are set to make their triumphant return ... not unlike half the Marvel Cinematic Universe popping out of those portals when all seemed lost in "Avengers: Endgame." You may have heard of Anthony and Joe Russo, the filmmakers entrusted with the latter two "Captain America" movies and ultimately took over the mega-blockbuster "Avengers" movies. Well, they're now closing in on a grand encore, if you can believe this latest shocking bit of news.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Russo Brothers are currently in "early talks" to direct not just one, but the next two "Avengers" movies. This follows months of uncertainty over at Marvel over who would step up to take on the fifth "Avengers" installment,...

Viggo Mortensen is not have an affinity for franchises.
Despite starring in the critically acclaimed “Lord of the Rings” trilogy helmed by Peter Jackson, Mortensen told Vanity Fair that he doesn’t really have a desire to star in any other film franchises today. The three “Lord of the Rings” films were released between 2001 and 2003, and spurred “The Hobbit” prequels.
“I don’t really look for or avoid any kind of genre or any size budget. I just look for interesting stories,” Mortensen said. “It doesn’t matter to me what the genre is or what the budget is or who’s making them. I would never do a movie just because so-and-so is directing it. It has to be about the story. And if I think I’m right for the character, that always comes first. That goes for franchises.”

Constructing a soundtrack album is a gentle -- and perhaps lost -- art. This author is old enough to remember the 1990s heyday of movie soundtracks, when film producers would regularly license charting pop hits, obscure deep cuts, upcoming rappers, and underappreciated indie bands to construct carefully curated and meticulously produced albums that lived happily in your friends' cars all summer. There was a time when an unsuccessful film could recoup a lot of its theatrical losses with overwhelming soundtrack record sales. See: "Dead Man on Campus."
As the music industry collapsed in the early 2000s, however, soundtrack records fell out of favor. Movie songs became mere playlists, neither arranged on a CD in any cogent order nor lending themselves toward a general thematic thrust. We '90s teens can now whine (as is our wont) that soundtrack albums are, in the '20s, rarely more than "pile of neat songs.

Wow. Just wow. While the Russo Brothers seemingly graduated and left Marvel Studios to start their own Agbo company, it appears they are not done with Marvel films just yet—not by a long shot.
According to THR, the Russo Brothers are in talks to helm both ‘Avengers 5’ and “Avengers: Secret Wars.” This is obviously going to be very popular amongst the fandom, as the Russos did no wrong behind the lens of their four previous Marvel films.

Film and TV production declined in Los Angeles over the last three months, as the recovery from last year’s strikes has stalled.
FilmLA, which tracks production levels using location permit data, reported that overall production was down 12.4% compared to the same quarter last year. That decline was largely driven by a 57% drop in reality TV compared to the prior year.
The decline is a symptom of a global contraction in content spending, which began before the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA went on strike last year, said Philip Sokoloski, a spokesman for FilmLA.
“Los Angeles is not uniquely suffering at the present time,” he said. “The contraction in content spend is going to hit all jurisdictions that rely on steady production volume.”
Scripted production rebounded somewhat after the strikes, though it has hit a plateau at a level below pre-strike levels, according to the data.

As uncertainty over potential writers, directors, and actors strikes (the writers and actors would go on to strike) loomed large last spring, indie filmmakers could not get their movies off the ground. After all, why start what you might not be able to finish? Planned production days were lost, and workers were, well, not working. This spring it was déjà vu all over again, according to FilmLA’s new quarterly report.
Facing potential strikes from IATSE and/or the Teamsters, on-location shoot days in Los Angeles from April through June dropped 12.4 percent from the same period in 2023. That may be a surprising statistic considering the WGA was actually on strike for May and June of last year. Overall shoot days declined 15.7 percent from the start of the year, January-March 2024.
And if you are a worker on an unscripted TV show, well, you probably had a lot of (unwanted) time off over the past three months.

J.D. Vance's story is very inspiring. As his 2016 memoir, "Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and a Culture in Crisis," related, he was raised in abject poverty in the suburbs of Ohio by his Kentucky-born grandparents, and his mother wrestled with addiction all her life. He managed to rise out of poverty, serve a stint in the military, and was eventually accepted into Ohio State University. He eventually achieved a degree from Yale and now, at age 39, Vance has realized his ultimate goal: to be a whiny, sycophantic bootlicker for a clownish would-be fascist. In 2024, Vance will serve as the running mate of Donald Trump, and the pair hope to enact Project 2025, a piddling wish-list of evil, theocratic dictates that aims to rob women, the poor, and queer people of rights and turn the president into an Emperor. We've come a long way, baby.

Scarlett Johansson’s animosity towards Disney went out with its former CEO.
Johansson infamously filed a lawsuit against the conglomerate for the day-and-date streaming release of standalone Marvel film “Black Widow” in 2021. Lead star Johansson’s contract for the film included that the feature be released exclusively in theaters with backend compensation in addition to her $20 million salary. As Disney alleged Johansson had a “callous disregard” for the Covid-19 pandemic amid a theatrical release, Johansson’s lawyer John Berlinski claimed it was a “misogynistic attack” against the actress with further arbitration. Johansson settled the lawsuit.
Bob Chapek was formerly the controversial CEO of Disney. Upon his exit, the company reinstated past CEO Bob Iger.
Now, Johansson is confirming she does not have a “grudge” against the Marvel parent company.
“I don’t hold a grudge,” Johansson told The New York Times. “I think it was just poor judgment and poor leadership at that time.

I know what you’re thinking: “Didn’t we just do this?” And the short answer is, yes, there already was an Emmys ceremony in 2024, but the longer answer includes the critical caveat that the trophies handed out then were actually the 2023 Emmys — they simply had to be held in January 2024 (instead of September 2023) to accommodate the WGA and SAG strikes. So now, today, when we talk about the most egregious Emmy snubs and most delightful surprises, we’re simply getting back to our regularly scheduled programming — er, awards calendar.
Perhaps all you really need to know is what’s not eligible: “Succession,” “Better Call Saul,” and “Ted Lasso” are all over — barring a revival, they won’t be competing for Emmys again. Meanwhile, ongoing favorites like “House of the Dragon,” “The Boys,” “The Acolyte,” “Fantasmas,” and “Interview with the Vampire” are also ineligible. Their seasons weren’t finished in...

Fans of classic Mexican cinema have an embarrassment of riches to feast on later this month when the Film at Lincoln Center (Flc) retrospective “Spectacle Every Day: Mexican Popular Cinema” begins. The series, curated and produced in partnership with the Locarno Film Festival and sponsored by Mubi, will feature an eclectic mix of 22 midcentury Mexican films produced from the 1940s through the 1960s.
Running at Flc from July 26-August 8, the series features classic horror movies, film noir, comedies, Westerns, lucha libre superhero movies, and early 3D cinema from one of Mexico’s richest periods of cultural output. Many of the films are either debuting new restorations or, in some cases, screening theatrically in the United States for the first time. The titles were originally screened together as part of a retrospective at the 2023 Locarno Film Festival, which featured 36 Mexican films before trimming its lineup down to 22 entries for the New York remounting.

As with any massive awards announcement, some nominees are celebrating this morning, and some who decidedly are not. Despite what was once considered a generally weak year in several categories, the 2024 Emmy Awards were full of deserving talent who were unfortunately not recognized for their efforts. The biggest omission was for “The Curse” across multiple categories. But not everyone can get into the party, right? Keeping all that in mind, here are some of the biggest snubs and surprises of the 2024 Emmy Awards nominations.

With White Rose, My God, a new album from Alan Sparhawk — his first since the passing of Mimi Parker, his partner in the band Low — scheduled to appear in September, the singer/songwriter has released its first single with a music video directed by independent filmmaker Rick Alverson (The Mountain). Alverson has pixellated Sparhawk’s face as the musician has digitally manipulated his voice in this eerie clip. Check it out above.

Spoilers for "Longlegs" follow.
It seems to happen like a clockwork. A new Nicolas Cage movie will arrive, and with it comes a question: "Is Nicolas Cage a good actor?" Cage has been working for decades now, but at some point, some folks got it in their heads that the off-kilter performer was bad at his job. To be fair, this could have something to do with the quality of the films he appears in. Cage once got himself in trouble with the IRS -- he made lavish purchases (including buying a dinosaur skull that turned out to be stolen), and according to CNBC, ended up owing the IRS "$6.3 million in property taxes."
To offset his financial woes, Cage began working -- a lot. He would seemingly take any job thrown his way, and as a result, he appeared in a lot of direct-to-video stinkers. Now, I'm not going to...

“Oddity,” the latest stab at supernatural unease from director Damian McCarthy (“Caveat”), is an undeniably unique little tale, not far from living up to its title and instead walking a line between conventional horror tropes and a handful of attempts to set itself apart from the crowd in ways that fall ever short in crossing the finish line. It’s a film that wears its potential on its sleeve, with messages somewhat buried under a story that shifts direction as if to suggest a series of deliberate screenwriting pivots or indecision as to the core plot and a slight disappointment as there’s nary a poor performance to be had, nor any editing missteps or difficulty making it to the end.

While the reviews for Michael Mann’s “Ferrari” were solid, and the film had a good festival launch, it would be silly to say that the release was wildly successful. The film only made $43 million worldwide on a budget that was said to be near $100 million. Not only that, but the good reviews didn’t translate into serious awards consideration. That said, Mann himself is very happy with the finished product, and he’s highlighting it on his new website.

There is no more waiting in this dojo, because "Cobra Kai" is finally back. The popular legacy sequel series that started its life on the YouTube Red streaming platform is ending its run after six seasons with an epic worldwide tournament that brings the best of the best in karate to prove who is the best around once and for all. Of course, we know this is not exactly the end as there will be a movie coming out in 2025 that brings together both franchise mainstay Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan from the 2010 remake of "The Karate Kid."
For now, "Cobra Kai" is doing its final bow with a season split into three parts. The first part is coming to Netflix on July 18, 2024, while Part 2 releases on November 24, 2024. After that, Part 3 will bring the story to an end sometime in 2025. It would be easy to blame the split on Netflix...

TV in 2024 has had some highs and lows. Some highly anticipated series, like “Sugar” with Colin Farrell, “The Veil” with Elisabeth Moss, and “The Big Cigar” with Andre Holland, underwhelmed not only us but also many critics.

The nominees for the 76th Emmy Awards were announced live from Hollywood this morning, and "The Bear" and "Shōgun" appear to be the shows to beat. The two FX on Hulu series earned a stunning 23 and 25 nominations respectively, with "Shōgun" earning several cast members first-time nominations and "The Bear" breaking the Emmys' all-time-record for the most nods in one year in the comedy category. The show –- which, as genre purists will surely point out, is actually a dramedy that often leans towards drama –- beats previous record holder "30 Rock" by one nomination.
Elsewhere on the ballot, it's clear that the absence of HBO juggernaut "Succession" has left a void in the drama category, one that several shows are vying to fill. Period pieces "The Gilded Age" and "The Crown" put up a good showing, while sci-fi shows "Fallout" and "3 Body Problem" also found a spot in the Best Drama Category.

Madonna has had one of the most interesting life stories of the past several decades. There has been enough drama, probably, to fill at least two or three feature-length films. So, it shouldn’t be really difficult to make a movie based on her life. However, Madonna is doing things differently, as she wants to write and direct the film herself. That’s why it wasn’t all that shocking to see that the film lost steam and wasn’t getting made back in 2023.

Following a historic strike and work stoppage in 2023, there were muted expectations for the quality of new and returning television shows in 2024. As demonstrated by many of the 2024 Emmy Awards nominations, those fears were unfounded. The 24,000+ members of the Television Academy voters spread the wealth but there were favorites. “Shogun,” “The Bear,” “Only Murders in the Building,” and “True Detective: Night Country ” topped all programs with 25, 23, 21, and 19 nominations respectively.

Two Emmy Award ceremonies in one year? The TV industry is going through a lot right now, but there’s something to be said for the shorter interval between Emmy celebrations in 2024 while awards season catches up with the timeline of 2023’s Hollywood strikes. January’s Emmy Awards honored television shows that completed their seasons between June 2022 and May 2023, and September’s ceremony will pick up right after that, with eligible shows premiering between June 2023 and May 2024.

Truer words have rarely been spoken.
“What a terrible fucking week,” Stewart said to open Tuesday’s episode of “The Daily Show” on Comedy Central, which he was originally not supposed to host and most definitely was not supposed to have take place in its regular New York City studio. The attempt on Donald Trump’s life and heightened security at the Republican National Convention (RNC) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin very abruptly changed the program’s grand (and on-the-ground) plans.
Stewart went on to mock the sales pitch that brought him back to “The Daily Show” in the first place.
“‘Hey Jon! Come back to ‘The Daily Show’ just for the election! It’ll be fun! You’ll do one day a week, it’ll be a larf — what could go wrong?'” (“Larf” here being an etymon for “laugh.”)
But seriously folks, Stewart felt that he had some explaining to...

In just a few short years, Denis Villeneuve's blockbuster adaptation of Frank Herbert's classic sci-fi novel "Dune" has become quite the beloved film franchise. "Part One" set the table for Timothée Chalamet's rise to power as Paul Atreides, while "Part Two" saw him become the leader of an ominous revolution that is poised to lead to a disastrous future. We'll find out soon enough when "Dune: Messiah" arrives, though no specific release date has been formally announced yet.
While we wait for the next chapter in the "Dune" saga, the pop culture fanatics at Mutant (who have risen from what Mondo used to be before being acquired by Funko) are delivering a stunning poster with beautiful artwork that pays tribute to "Dune: Part One." Korean-American artist Deb JJ Lee is behind this "Dune" poster, and while this isn't the first time the poster has been released (with...

Shabana Azeez and Mackenzie Fearnley are very good as the husband and wife to be, but this horror film feels indecisive and stretches too long
Great horror movies and psychological thrillers come on like magic spells, pushing us into incantatory spaces where we kind of want to run for the hills while also knowing we won’t stop watching. Birdeater – a nightmarish Australian film about a buck’s party weekend in the bush that becomes a terrible cocktail of fighting, power plays, verbal grenades and druggy mayhem – exhibits full-on stylistic chutzpah, which I respect in some ways. But this production pushed me away much more than it pulled me in, ultimately leaving me aggrieved, withered and wondering what the point was.
You’re not supposed to enjoy such a rank experience, with its leering characters and thick air of toxic masculinity. But I’ve encountered zoo animals I found more...

Illustrators and matte artists within the Art Directors Guild Local 800 have issued an open letter recommending guild members vote against IATSE’s tentative deal with the studio in the ongoing ratification vote. The group is specifically opposed to the language in the deal surrounding “AI Systems.”
The letter follows another issued by members of another craft discipline within Local 800, the Set Designers Council, on Friday, that was also opposed specifically to the artificial intelligence terms in the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees’ tentative deal.
“We believe the language as proposed to be both detrimental in the short term, and sets a damaging precedent for our future negotiations, as well as for our sibling locals who are about to negotiate for themselves,” the letter reads. “Contract language is nearly impossible to change once ratified. The studios have starved us into this position. We are trapped between a rock and a hard place.

James Gunn announced on Threads that “Superman” is getting closer to the end of filming after the cast and crew wrapped a six-week shoot in Cleveland. The writer-director stressed that “we are not done shooting” and there’s “still a couple weeks left,” adding: “It’s a long shoot…but we’re getting close!!” Prior to Cleveland, Gunn and his “Superman” cast kicked off production in Atlanta.
“Cleveland — today we are leaving you after six amazing weeks of shooting,” Gunn posted. “From the moment we first came here on a scout a tad less than a year ago and Terminal Tower was lit up with the colors of Superman, I knew you were a special place. I would walk down your streets and someone would stop me and tell me how grateful they were we were shooting in their city — not once, not twice, but dozens of times.”

This article contains spoilers for the "Star Wars: The Acolyte" season 1 finale.
"Star Wars: The Acolyte" season 1 came to a stunning conclusion in its eighth episode, also titled "The Acolyte," closing one mystery, but opening and deepening many others. The show began with the murder of a Jedi and closed with the death of another and the murder of his reputation -- a dark spot on the Jedi that gets quietly swept under the rug.
This show really is the beginning of the end of the Jedi, documenting the small compromises they began to make, which ultimately leads to their downfall at the hands of Palpatine. "Once you start down the dark path," Master Yoda once warned Luke Skywalker, "forever will it dominate your destiny, consume you it will."
And that's what we saw with this show and Master Indara's (Carrie-Anne Moss) initial decision to lie about the events of Brendok,...

Scarlett Johansson recently spoke to The New York Times and said she has no grudge against Disney after their legal battle over the release of her Marvel movie “Black Widow.” The two parties became legal adversaries when Disney opted to release “Black Widow” in theaters and on streaming via Disney+ Premier Access amid the pandemic in July 2021. Johansson’s contract contained a stipulation that “Black Widow” be released exclusively in theaters, so she sued the studio as moving the film to Disney+ would result in forgoing millions of dollars in backend compensation.
“I don’t hold a grudge,” Johansson said. “I think it was just poor judgment and poor leadership at that time. It just felt very unprofessional to me, the entire ordeal. And honestly, I was incredibly disappointed, especially because I was holding out hope until, finally, my team was like, ‘You have to act.’”

It’s hard to overstate the comforting power of a TV episode. Whether you’re in the midst of a comedy, drama, limited series, reality show, or anything else, there’s no feeling like coming home from a long day to escapist sanctuary of “just one episode.” Sometimes they’re a breezy 21 minutes to 30 minutes, an opportunity to sneak in another because they just fly by. Others provide the regimented 40-60 minute hour, while the streaming economy has made way for feature-length installments that somehow still feel like just one chapter in a bigger story. Even disappointing shows have their exceptional outings, while those that are consistently excellent may fail to dazzle more or less from one part to the next. As IndieWire compiles our best of 2024 (so far), the staff faces our annual conundrum of weighing good episodes against good shows and seeing where the two overlap. For example,...

Bautista returns as a less than convincing CIA agent charging around the planet to protect his stepdaughter and defend against nuclear catastrophe
Former wrestler Dave Bautista has the chops, as they say, for comedy. He was terrific in the ensemble of Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, playing a claptrap-spouting men’s rights influencer. But there’s not much going on in his performance here, headlining a charmless action comedy as a CIA tough guy in overprotective dad mode. Bautista’s delivery looks practically comatose at points, like a grizzly bear with tranquilliser dart hanging out of its neck, just about to thud to the ground, face bewildered and semi-paralysed.
The movie is a sequel to My Spy from 2020, in which Bautista’s CIA agent JJ is assigned to protect a nine-year-old girl, Sophie (Chloe Coleman). Five years on, JJ is married to Sophie’s mum and, squeezing his hulking frame into a suit,...

“Twisters” may do some damage at the box office.
The movie, a standalone sequel to the 1996 disaster epic “Twister,” is expected to generate a sizable $50 million to $55 million when it touches down in 4,000 North American theaters over the weekend. “Minari” filmmaker Lee Isaac Chung directed “Twisters,” which stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell and Anthony Ramos as storm chasers who find themselves in the fight of their lives as multiple tornadoes converge over central Oklahoma.
“Twisters” cost $155 million to produce, so its backers at Universal need the movie to resonate globally to justify that price tag. Warner Bros. is releasing the film internationally, where “Twisters” has earned $11.5 million from 38 territories to date. It will land over the weekend in much of Europe, including major markets like France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom.

On July 17, 1999, a little animated show created by an animator and marine biology educator debuted, and it changed Nickelodeon, TV animation, and pop culture forever. "SpongeBob SquarePants," which follows its titular sentient sea sponge living in the underwater city known as Bikini Bottom and working as a fry cook at a popular burger joint, quickly took the world by storm. It overtook "Pokémon" as the highest-rated children's show on television (at the height of Pokémania), and it reinvented Nickelodeon, solidifying the network as the home of the biggest all-ages animated TV shows.
A big part of the show's success is its visual storytelling. The episodes are full of visual gags and an eye for physical comedy that's reminiscent of Golden Age of Animation cartoons like "Merrie Melodies," there's a wealth of sharp scripts with smart jokes, and the show has a terrific ensemble cast of memorable characters and enough background...

After directing the Oscar-nominated animated film “I Lost My Body,” Jérémy Clapin now finds himself making his first live-action feature.
Clapin writes and directs the drama “Meanwhile on Earth,” which stars newcomer Megan Northam as a girl who grieves her missing astronaut brother. However, all may not be as it seems.
The official synopsis reads: “Elsa (Northam), along with her family, is struggling following the disappearance of her brother Franck, an astronaut who vanished during his first mission. While stargazing one night, Elsa is shocked to receive contact from Franck, but her joy is short-lived when she learns of the dark and troubling forces behind Franck’s reappearance, forcing her to confront the lengths she will go for the brother she once feared was gone forever.”
The film is produced by Marc du Pontavice and will be distributed by Metrograph Pictures. Rising outfit Metrograph is making a splash this year...

If most sequels tend to feel like hastily rewritten versions of the original, why can’t the same rules apply to reviews of said sequels? In preparation for viewing and critiquing Peter Segal’s “My Spy the Eternal City,” this critic returned to her own review of the first film, the spring 2020 streaming hit “My Spy.” Within that review: a number of ideas, thoughts, and opinions that could easily transfer over to this first sequel, with minimal edits.
For instance, in “My Spy,” star Dave “Bautista and a genuinely cute kid co-star can’t enliven this predictable and humorless entry into a micro-genre long due for a refresher.” Still true. Co-star Chloe Coleman and “Bautista are wonderful together — appealing, warm, and well-matched — but ‘My Spy’ just can’t capitalize on that chemistry.” We did ask for it. The plot?
