Canadian director Louise Archambault’s latest work, Irena’s Vow has a fascinating real-life story at the center of it. It is about a young Polish woman going out of her way to save the lives of as many as twelve Jews during the Second World War. But the execution of it is extremely basic. Naturally, the result is another war-drama movie that is decent at best and completely rests on the shoulders of its lead performer, Sophie Nelisse. Well, I have to say Nelisse makes it work by being truly fantastic in the role of Irena. While Irena’s Vow fails to be anything other than a biopic filled with tropes, it does throw you a surprise by casting Dougray Scott as a Nazi officer. The network dropped a carousel of photos on social media teasing what’s ahead for the new season, alongside the caption, “We know you’re starving.”

Season 3 of the series will air in 2025, as production on the psychological thriller was delayed due to the writers’ and actors’ strike.

Season 3 will see showrunners Bart Nickerson and Jonathan Lisco directing episode two episodes, with Nickerson taking on episode 301, and Lisco will be directing episode 303.

The third season of Yellowjackets will not be premiering until 2025, Yellowjackets executive producers Ashley Lyle, Jonathan Lisco and Bart Nickerson told Deadline on the red carpet at the Emmy Awards on Monday night.

Following the writers and actors strikes that delayed production for most scripted series, the writers room for the Showtime psychological thriller reopened in September. Pre-production for the series was shut down just one day after the WGA strike began last May.

Sophie Nélisse, Jasmine Savoy Brown and Samantha Hanratty were among the young stars of Yellowjackets who stepped out for the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards on Monday (January 15) at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.

The ladies, who play younger versions of Shauna, Taissa and Misty, respectively, on the fan-favorite show joined several more of their younger castmates at the awards ceremony, where the series is nominated for Outstanding Drama Series!

Also in attendance were Steven Krueger, Sophie Thatcher, Courtney Eaton, Liv Hewson and Kevin Alves.

Other Yellowjackets Emmy nominations include Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Melanie Lynskey and Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series.

“Yellowjackets” showrunners Ashley Lyle, Bart Nickerson and Jonathan Lisco gave an update on the status of Season 3 during a Q&a for SAG-AFTRA nomination committee members on Wednesday night.

“We’re deep in the writing,” Lyle said, noting that the show’s writers had already assembled to work on the third season before the WGA strike resulted in a pause in production in May. But, once the strike ended in September, Lyle said “everybody came back so incredibly enthusiastic, raring to go and creatively invigorated.” Without divulging any plot details, she said, “We’re having so much fun and are very excited about it.”

The series offers a dual timeline narrative: one follows a high school girls’ soccer team who survive a plane crash in the wilderness, and the other catches up with them as adults 25 years later.

Dan Gordon, a 56-year member of the Writers Guild of America and reserve captain for the Israeli Defense Forces, published an open letter on Tuesday resigning from the union over its failure to condemn the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel on Oct. 7.

“The failure of the Guild’s leadership to issue even the mildest condemnation of the worst massacre of a religious minority in the Middle East since Isis carried out similar atrocities against the Yezidis is appalling,” Gordon said in his letter. “It is corrosive to me as a writer and repugnant to every fiber of my being as a person of conscience.”

The Nun and The Hallow director Corin Hardy has set up his latest feature, high school horror movie Whistle. According to Deadline, Whistle has also lined up quite the cast.

The high school horror movie centered around an Aztec Death Whistle, known for its shrieking sound, will star Dafne Keen, Sophie Nélisse (“Yellowjackets”), Sky Yang (Rebel Moon), Percy Hynes White (“Wednesday”) and Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead).

In Whistle, “a misfit group of unwitting high school students stumble upon a cursed object, an ancient Aztec Death Whistle. They discover that blowing the whistle and the terrifying sound it emits will summon their future deaths to hunt them down. As the body count rises, the friends investigate the origins of the deadly artifact in a desperate effort to stop the horrifying chain of events that they have set in motion.”

The film was written by Owen Egerton, adapted from his own short story.

Dafne Keen of Logan and His Dark Materials and Sophie Nélisse of Yellowjackets and The Book Thief have signed on to star in Whistle, the latest horror film from The Hallow and The Nun director Corin Hardy. Filming is set to begin in Ontario, Canada on the first week in November – and since this is a Canada/Ireland co-production, governed by Actra rather than SAG, it won’t be impacted by the ongoing Screen Actors Guild strike.

Hollywood stars can’t be very chatty amid the SAG-AFTRA strike. But the actors at TIFF — those whose projects have received waivers from the union to publicize their projects — have never looked better. At least that’s what you take away from TIFF’s own portrait studio, powered by Canon, where actors joined with directors to strike some stunning poses.

IndieWire partnered with TIFF to capture exclusive photos of 20 of the directors and performers who stopped by the studio, located at the Fairmont Royal York. Photographer Norman Wong adopted for a striking black-and-white aesthetic.

There’s certainly no denying TIFF managed an A-list guest list. Leading Black voices in film, including Ava DuVernay and Spike Lee, stopped by alongside some of the foremost faces in television, from “Yellowjackets” star Sophie Nélisse to “Succession” icon Hiam Abbass. First-time director Finn Wolfhard appeared to promote his next-generation slasher, “Hell of a Summer.

When Canadian director Louise Archambault shot her Holocaust drama Irena’s Vow — about a young woman’s heroism in hiding Polish Jews from Nazi occupiers – she faced present-day obstacles during production in Poland.

Archambault witnessed a makeshift refugee camp filled with Ukrainians fleeing Russia’s invasion of their country next to her hotel in Warsaw, and had to navigate a security cordon as U.S. President Joe Biden stayed in that same hotel in March 2022.

“I just wanted to go into my hotel room and I couldn’t get through because of so much security,” Archambault recalled after returning to her hotel after a morning of scouting new locations for Irena’s Vow, only to encounter vigilant Secret Service agents as she waved her room key card.

And visiting Warsaw’s main train station, which at the time was a major pit stop for millions of Ukrainian refugees, brought home the horrors of the Russian invasion.

By winning the TV academy’s favor last year as the star of “Euphoria,” 26-year-old Zendaya, who had previously been lauded for the same drama series in 2020, set a new record as the all-time youngest recipient of multiple lead acting Emmys. Her historic turn in the episode “Stand Still Like the Hummingbird” added up to a whopping 41 minutes of screen time, which accounted for 76% of the mid-season installment. Now that she is once again out of the running, six other actresses with comparatively lower screen time totals are gunning for the gold.

Those who make up the current Best Drama Actress lineup (which includes one 2022 nominee and a former winner) have submitted episodes in which they appear for an average of 21 minutes and 56 seconds, or 39.44%. This data was compiled using a simple definition of stand-alone screen time, which applies to any time a particular actor can be seen on screen or heard off screen.

In Eastern Poland in 1939, Irena Gut (Sophie Nélisse) works as a nurse. She's just found out that Poland has been invaded by Germany, and her whole life is about to change. Before she knows it, Irena is ushered away to a munitions factory where she does intensive labor all hours of the day. She's been separated from her mother and sisters and is told her only chance of survival is to assist the German war effort.

Impressed by her "German" heritage (Irena is not aware of any actual German background), Major Rugmer (Dougray Scott) reassigns Irena to a new placement, doing domestic housework. Quiver and WestEnd have announced international deals on the upcoming TIFF world premiere and Second World War true story Irena’s Vow starring Sophie Nélisse and Dougray Scott.

Deals have closed with Dea Planeta for Spain, Outsider for Portugal, United King for Israel, and Cinesky for airlines. Quiver will distribute in the US.

Irena’s Vow will premiere in Toronto on September 10 at 3.15pm Et at TIFF Bell Lightbox, with a second public screening on September 11 at 3.35pm Et at Scotiabank Theatre.

Karyn Kusama is one of many executive producers on Showtime’s blockbuster dual-timeline drama about the survivors of a plane crash, but she also has a very singular connection to the series: She directed both the pilot and the most recent season finale.
