Donald Glover and Maya Erskine aren’t returning for season 2 of Prime Video’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith?! What? Is this some sort of contract negotiation standoff? Even after the series’ 16 Emmy nominations including Lead Actor and Lead Actress in a drama?
Hardly, according to co-Creator and EP Francesca Sloane and the show’s director and EP Hiro Murai.
“We’re just trying to make the best version of season 2 possible,” Sloane tells Crew Call, “That’s why we’re being so coy about it.” That is whether Glover and Erskine are really not returning.

Out of the 16 Emmy nominations Prime Video’s “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” earned for its first season, five were for high-profile guest stars Michaela Coel, Sarah Paulson, Parker Posey, Paul Dano and John Turturro.
The quintet, who make up half of this year’s drama guest acting nominees, were “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” co-creator and showrunner Francesca Sloane’s first choices for their respective characters.
“That’s why it’s unbelievable that all these people said ‘Yes,'” she said. “One of the things we were excited about doing was taking these [actors] who played roles in a way that you would expect them to and then turn it on its head a little bit or even just to the left versus to the right.”

When it was announced in early 2021 that “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” the 2005 blockbuster action romance with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie playing the titular spies, was being adapted into a television series for Prime Video, the response was mixed at best. Why would anyone attempt to resurrect a successful property partially fueled by salacious tabloid fodder surrounding Pitt and Jolie’s real-life affair — let alone try to re-create their chemistry onscreen and reimagine a new take?
The initial doubts over the TV version of “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” even with co-creator, writer, director and star Donald Glover in the driver’s seat, fired up the creative team behind the scenes. It was time to prove everyone wrong. “Maybe this is the naughty kid in me, maybe this is the punk in me — it excited me because they had no idea what we were cooking,” co-creator and showrunner Francesca Sloane said.

“It is a good representation for a number of reasons. First of all, [director] Hiro Murai did this amazing job of establishing this very unique tone and also this very unique tempo. It has this slow burn quality and then it all of a sudden explodes,” reveals Emmy-nominated “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” composer David Fleming about his nomination for the series premiere “First Date.” For our recent webchat he adds, “It was really my first thing to touch and I was trying to define the musical world in that first episode; the themes and the sound and I think there were a lot of ways one could go with a show that’s fresh. For better or for worse, the choices that I made, I feel like really took root in that first episode.” We talked with Fleming as part of Gold Derby’s special “Meet the Experts” Q&a event with 2024 Emmy nominees.

Francesca Sloane, writer and co-creator of Mr. & Mrs. Smith, worked with Donald Glover to reinterpret the 2005 film of the same name into a dark dramedy about two for-hire agents embroiled in a tumultuous fake marriage. Sloane selected this scene from episode six, “Couples Therapy (Naked & Afraid),” where John and Jane Smith (Glover and Maya Erskine) break into a scathing fight while on a spy mission in the woods, and tensions that have been simmering over the course of the season come to a head.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith script
“It’s probably the most raw scene between them,” Francesca Sloane tells The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s definitely the moment where they get the ugliest with each other. It’s a breaking point.” The argument begins when Jane is noting that a bug, which has been attracted to the light of their campfire, has flown to its demise. “It...

Prime Video’s freshman spy series Mr. & Mrs. Smith is coming out of the gate with 16 Emmy nominations including Best Drama Actor and Actress for leads Donald Glover and Maya Erskine and the main event, Best Drama Series.
In a reimagination of the 2005 film that starred Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, co-creators Glover and showrunner Francesca Sloane — who are Emmy-nominated for Best Writing for a Drama Series — wanted the show to be its own thing and not a copy of anything else.
Sloane was joined by director and executive producer Hiro Murai, casting director Carmen Cuba and composer David Fleming for Deadline’s Contenders TV: The Nominees on Saturday.
“People keep saying that I coined this — this should go on record that Hiro coined this,” Sloane said. “Our season of Smiths are these C-minus students in an AP course. I think that sort of travels through the entire season as opposed to the film,...

In the heart-pounding final episode of Amazon Prime Video’s “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” the climatic fight scene corners our heroes in their own, stunning brownstone. Surrounded by the trappings of wealth, the duo turn on each other, blowing up their home and ultimately, their relationship… only to end their fight sprawled out on the carpet, high off truth serum, sweating, kissing and baring their souls to each other.
“It was very poetic that we destroyed everything because it felt very millennial,” explains co-creator and star Donald Glover. “Yeah, we got the water bar, we got all this nice stuff, [but] you’re still going to fight in it. Parker Posey, once dubbed “Queen of the Indies” by Time in the late 1990s, has more than 110 acting credits to her name. She’s starred in such acclaimed projects as feature films “Dazed and Confused,” “Party Girl,” “You’ve Got Mail,” “Best in Show” and television shows “Boston Legal,” “Lost in Space,” “Louie” and “The Staircase.” But it wasn’t until this year, for her guest appearance on the Amazon Prime Video Series “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” that Posey received recognition from the television academy. In 2018, Prime Video was the first streamer to land an Outstanding Comedy Series Emmy for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and then repeated as winner in the top comedy category with Fleabag the following year. After cracking the Outstanding Drama Series field with a nomination for The Boys in 2021, Prime Video had a drama breakthrough this year with two series in the top category, Kilter Films’ Fallout, based on the Bethesda video games, and Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith, inspired by the 2005 film, which landed 16 nominations each for a 32 total.

The 2024 Best Drama Writing Emmy category is the second time in four years that none of the nominees from the prior year are eligible, giving us a whole new slate of programs competing for six slots (out of 134 total submissions on the ballot). All of last year’s nominated shows — “Better Call Saul” (“Point and Shoot” by Gordon Smith and “Saul Gone” by Peter Gould), “Bad Sisters”, “Andor” (“One Way Out” by Beau Willimon), “The Last of Us”, “The White Lotus” (“Arrivederci” by Mike White), and the winner “Succession” (“Connor’s Wedding” by Jesse Armstrong) — are not on this year’s Emmy ballot, as they either concluded or didn’t air any new episodes.

Maya Erskine may be having a pretty strong run right now after the success of “Pen15,” her Hulu comedy series she co-created with Anna Konkle and Sam Svibleman, and now Amazon Prime’s “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” which is placing her in the awards conversation for drama, but this confident display of her talents wasn’t always a guarantee. In a recent piece for the Los Angeles Times, Erskine recalled how she was actually cut the first time she acted on a set.
“It was ‘Hart of Dixie’ on [The] CW,” she said. “I just had one line that was like, ‘Is this seat taken?’ And I swear to you — have any of you seen ‘The Comeback’ where Lisa Kudrow runs her line over and over throughout 24 hours? Last year, the nominees for both Best Drama Guest Actor and Best Drama Guest Actress were drawn from just two shows: “The Last of Us” and “Succession.” The former reaped a lucky seven nominations while the latter nabbed five. We don’t think any show will manage to snag that many nominations across these two drama guest acting categories this year but we do think one show will land more bids than any other: Amazon Prime Video’s “Mr. And Mrs. Smith.”
The spy-thriller series, created by Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane, is a reboot of the 2005 movie starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Glover stars in the lead role opposite “Pen15” actress and creator Maya Erskine. The two multi-hyphenates feature as a pair of spies (John and Jane) who must pretend to be a couple and complete missions together. The episodes each depict the stages of a relationship through the prism a spy thriller.

A galaxy far, far away keeps getting bigger and bigger thanks to Disney+ expanding the “Star Wars” franchise with several TV shows, such as “The Mandalorian” and “Ahsoka,” to go alongside their film output. As such, “Star Wars” fans have gotten used to seeing actors from the franchise popping up at various awards shows — either for “Star Wars” projects or for other works. Giancarlo Esposito was Emmy-nominated for his villainous work in “The Mandalorian,” for example,” while last year’s Best Drama Actor Emmys lineup included Mando himself, Pedro Pascal, who was cited for “The Last of Us.” With this in mind, here are eight “Star Wars” actors who could be nominated at this year’s Emmys.

The Mr. & Mrs. Smith showrunner may have the shortest résumé among her peers gathered at the Fairmont Century Plaza for the live event, but she is by no means out of place. That became crystal clear when the conversation turned to show envy. “I was envious watching Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” says The Crown creator Peter Morgan. “Dealing with repressed British people for so long, I was peering over the fence thinking, ‘Look how much fun they’re having!’ “
That was not the end of the love fest. Ripley writer-director Steven Zaillian picked Issa López’s True Detective: Night Country, and vice versa. “In Mexico, there’s bad envy and good envy,” explains López.

When Donald Glover first approached showrunner Francesca Sloane about adapting “Mr. & Mrs. Smtih” for Amazon Prime, she “started laughing,” and thought it was a “weird Donald Glover joke that he randomly spit out.” She was confused as to why he would pick the 2005 action-comedy of all movies, but as the conversation evolved, the project began taking shape in her mind.
“We discussed why people get married, what is it like to fight for somebody, how would it be to take this big blockbuster hit and use our sensibilities of quiet moments and filter that throughout the series,” Sloane explained. “And also, what is it like to have a woman run and write this show in such a masculine-charged genre? When IndieWire Honors host Alex Edelman took the stage at Citizen News in Hollywood to kick off the show, his monologue perfectly encapsulated the fun, laid back approach that powers the biannual ceremony honoring creative independence. (Watch the video of Edelman on IndieWire’s red carpet above.)
“Is this the fanciest award show? No! But it will be one of the shortest,” he said. “If you found street parking, you won’t need to refill the meter!”
Edelman went on to introduce the esteemed group of TV artists being honored, which included
Carol Burnett, Quinta Brunson, Issa López, Lulu Wang, Riley Keough, Dakota Fanning, Francesca Sloane, John Mulaney, Fisher Stevens, and the duos of Matt Bomer and Ron Nyswaner, and Bryan Lee O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski. And while he heaped plenty of praise on the group’s artistic achievements, he also had a laugh about one of his own past encounters with an unnamed honoree.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has more A-list actors than any other major franchise in Hollywood, making stars of newcomers such as Simu Liu, Sebastian Stan, and Tom Holland while also weaving in veterans such as Robert Redford, Samuel L. Jackson, and Cate Blanchett. The sheer amount of talent on display across the MCU’s many movies and TV shows means that, naturally, the MCU has its fingers in every awards show pie. In other awards, you’ll always find an MCU alum or two nominated at any major awards ceremony. So, speaking of that, here are eight MCU actors past and present we think will be nominated for an Emmy this year.

Spoiler Warning: This story discusses plot developments from “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” now streaming on Amazon’s Prime Video.
“You really want me to ruin this shit for you?” Donald Glover asked at an FYC panel on Tuesday, just hours after he and “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” co-star Maya Erskine got grilled by Jimmy Kimmel about Variety‘s previous reporting that the stars were not expected to return.
The Season 1 finale of the spy romance ended with three muzzle flashes as John (Glover) and Jane Smith (Erskine) try to shoot their way out of being “finalized” by the spy organization that paired them up in the first place. The couple might’ve failed a few missions, but by this point in the show, they’ve finally succeeded at the most important thing — being vulnerable with one another. Mr. & Mrs. Smith composer David Fleming joined Deadline’s Sound & Screen Television live-music event to discuss the nuances of creating the perfect spy score built on the foundation of trust.
Prime Video’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith centers on two lonely strangers who land jobs working for a mysterious spy agency that offers them a glorious life of espionage, wealth, world travels and a dream brownstone in Manhattan. The catch: new identities in an arranged marriage as Mr. & Mrs. John and Jane Smith (played by Donald Glover and Maya Erskine). Now hitched, John and Jane navigate a high-risk mission every week while also facing a new relationship milestone. Their complex cover story becomes even more complicated when they catch real feelings for each other. What’s riskier, espionage or marriage?
When sitting down with series creators Glover and Francesca Sloane, Fleming said Glover only really had one theme in mind for the musical composition: trust.

While television had been a part of each past IndieWire Honors celebration, the medium took center stage on the evening of Thursday, June 6, with an event that celebrated the creators and stars of such well-regarded shows as “Abbott Elementary,” “Expats,” “Fellow Travelers,” “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” and “True Detective: Night Country.”
Even before the awards ceremony began, as talent started filing into the Citizen News venue in the heart of Hollywood, it was a marvel to see “Palm Royale” star and Vanguard Award recipient Carol Burnett hold court as fellow honorees like “Under the Bridge” producer/star Riley Keough, recipient of the Maverick Award, and “Abbott Elementary” creator/star Quinta Brunson, recipient of the Visionary Award (and whom Burnett presented an Emmy to in January), came to greet the comedy legend.

The first-ever Gotham TV Awards offered a stark contrast between the Gotham Film & Media Institute’s annual celebration of cinema. While both awards shows were founded to toast independent productions — that is, before the Gotham Awards increased their budget cap eligibility requirements in 2023 — the Gotham TV Awards felt like a strangely intimate gathering that was mostly populated by showrunners, network executives, and the Gotham TV Awards jurors, with a few actors and press sprinkled in.
Sure, it could be that it’s the first year for the awards show and thus a smaller turnout and even venue. Or perhaps the Gotham TV Awards will remain a coveted industry event, one that feels like it’s only for insiders.
The intimacy was most prominent during the Anniversary Tribute for “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” icon Mariska Hargitay. The award was presented by Hargitay’s former co-star Stephanie March, and...

Baby Reindeer, Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Colin From Accounts were the top winners at the first-ever Gotham TV Awards, which took place in New York on Tuesday night.
Accepting for breakthrough limited series, the final award of the night, Baby Reindeer star and creator Richard Gadd offered a thoughtful observation about the Netflix show’s popularity and some advice for anyone going through a difficult time.
“It’s weird that a show as messed up as this has gone on to strike a chord with so many people,” Gadd said of darkly comic thriller. “I think it speaks to the fact that I think a lot of people in the world are struggling right now. I don’t know much in the way of advice, but I do know that nothing lasts forever. So if you are in a rut, just keep going. Persevere, persevere, persevere and I promise you things will get better.

For Francesca Sloane, tackling a television reboot of the 2005 action feature “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” that starred Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie wasn’t the easiest of assignments for her first job as a television showrunner. She understood that no matter how fresh a take that she and co-creator Donald Glover gave it, there would be pushback and comparisons, much of it unfavorable. But in fact she relished the challenge. “Part of the draw and part of the mountain to climb was the original and those comparisons and allowing it to live in its own lane while still sort of bringing some of that traction over,” Sloane says of the eight-episode Prime Video drama series that stars Glover and Maya Erskine as secret agents posing as a married couple. The series became “a pairing of two people who are at odds and yet equally partnered in terms of their capabilities.

For as long as she can remember, Francesca Sloane has been writing stories.
Even from the age of four, the co-creator and showrunner of “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” remembers “watching people want things, observing their desires, observing their emotions, and wanting to construct that into characters into little books.” Reading, writing, and imagining scenes in her head became Sloane’s happy place, a way of connecting with and making sense of the world around her as a shy child.

When Francesca Sloane jumped on a Zoom five weeks ago to discuss the celebrated “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” the show’s co-creator didn’t know if the Prime Video series was coming back for a second season. In hindsight, it would have been shocking if it didn’t. The Donald Glover and Maya Erskine drama series earned almost 1 billion views in the U.S. in its opening week and was a mainstay on the streamer’s top 10 trending list for over two months.

“The primary thing when I talked to Donald Glover at the start of this was, he said that the show is about trust,” reveals”Mr. and Mrs. Smith” composer David Fleming. For our recent webchat he adds, “trusting your professional partner, trusting your romantic partner; it really was trying to tell those two stories, of their relationship as spies and their blossoming romance as one story and the music had to serve both purposes.” We talked with Fleming as part of Gold Derby’s special “Meet the Experts” Q&a event with 2024 awards contenders. Soon after the release of the first season of Mr. & Mrs. Smith, it was reported that the second season would not have the same actors. A source claimed that Maya Erskine and Donald Glover will not be coming back, and the series will continue with new faces. Naturally, many fans were disappointed by the news and thought it was the end of yet another good series because of bureaucracy.

Amazon Prime Video’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith reboot was released earlier this year to surprisingly good reviews. Starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine, the show, created by Glover along with Francesca Sloane, followed two spies who are partnered up as a married couple while on a mission. The show was renewed for a second season recently.
While the show’s second-season renewal was met with fanfare, rumors began to float about Glover and Erskine being dropped from the show. However, showrunner Sloane debunked the rumor and mentioned that the cliffhanger from the season finale still stands and that the rumors were untrue.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie‘s 2005 hit movie has finally been adapted into a TV show after several stop-start attempts. Created by Donald Glover and his “Atlanta” colleague Francesca Sloane, the series follows two secret agents who go undercover as a married couple in order to complete missions for a mysterious organization.
Glover stars as one half of the duo while “Pen15” star/creator Maya Erskine features as the other. Glover is reliably excellent as John Smith but it’s Erskine, as Jane Smith, who steals the show, as noted by critics.
Kristen Baldwin (Entertainment Weekly) stated: “Erskine — so wonderfully, uninhibitedly awkward in ‘PEN15’ — brings a riveting stillness to Jane. Her character’s inscrutable mien keeps John and the audience a little off-balance, though Erskine reveals glimmers of emotional desolation in Jane’s steady gaze.”

After very positive reviews and a growing fanbase, Amazon’s reimagining Mr. & Mrs. Smith has officially been renewed for a second season at the streaming service, which is definitely great news. The first season ended on February 2, 2024, so this renewal is quite quick, as it came after just three and a half months (more or less). The series has been described as a reimaging of the 2005 film starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, but with a different take on the story and the whole concept. The first season starred Donald Glover and Maya Erskine as the titular married couple who lead very different lives in reality.

It’s official: Mr. & Mrs. Smith will be back on the case.
Amazon kicked off its inaugural meeting with Madison Avenue ad buyers Tuesday with a slew of announcements, including news that the action series starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine has been renewed for a second season.
A reimagining of the 2005 feature that starred Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Glover co-created the series with his Atlanta colleague Francesca Sloane, with the latter returning as showrunner for season two. It’s unclear if Glover and Erskine will return to star as Amazon has not formally confirmed any casting for the newly ordered season.
The series was originally poised to star Glover alongside Fleabag favorite Phoebe Waller-Bridge, with the Star Wars duo also serving as co-creators. But, as Glover explained in a THR cover story, the friends disagreed on a larger concept for the reimagined Smith and agreed to part ways.

John and Jane Smith just received a new mission: Prime Video has renewed the spy thriller Mr. & Mrs. Smith for Season 2, TVLine has learned. But John and Jane’s identity may be changing, with our sister site Variety reporting that Season 1 stars Donald Glover and Maya Erskine may not return for the sophomore run. If so, the series could become an anthology and follow a new spy couple in Season 2. (TVLine has reached out to Prime Video for comment.)
