Gamer culture is a funny thing. Virtual soldiers of fortune sit comfortably on their plushy, safely-indoor couches, while screaming obscenities and egotistical insults into a headset microphone. It takes a movie like Level Up to put some of these arm-chair warriors in their respective places, useful with only a Cheeto-dusted controller in their hands. Yet, as far as “fantasy becomes reality” movies are concerned, Adam Randall’s kidnapping take is a bit more boiled-down than other more frantic, high-stakes efforts. Think Call Of Duty meets Grand Theft Auto, except Randall’s dangerous trajectory lacks any gameplay meat on its proverbial bones. Bad might turn to worse, but never in an adrenaline-pumping, action-ready kind of way. Not a glitchy mess, but more like a beta test?

‘Level Up’ Exclusive Clip: A Hardcore Gamer Enters a Twisted Scheme To Save His Kidnapped Girlfriend
Though the harshest critics of video games claim that they have no real-life value, sometimes they can come in handy. The new British thriller “Level Up” innately understands how those skills might be put to good use in a terrifying situation. The film follows Matt (Josh Bowman) and Anna (Leila Mimmack), a young couple living in London whose relationship is on the rocks. While Anna is starting her career, Matt struggles to find purpose in life, spending most of his time playing video games. One morning, masked thugs break into his apartment and kidnap Anna, but not before locking Matt into a mysterious vest. Now, Matt must follow a series of complicated, dangerous instructions to deliver a package somewhere on the streets of London in order to save his girlfriend. Watch an exclusive clip from the film below.

You watch enough hero-backed-into-a-corner action films like Crank, Taken, or The Equalizer and you start to find your mind drifting away from the sheer monotony of their progression. Their characters are built to survive these situations no matter how dire because people want to see the good guy win. They want to see him risk everything, travel in the murky areas of morality, and be the badass society doesn’t allow them to be, but that ultimate victory is key because escapism only works when your surrogate onscreen walks away. How else could there be a sequel? But what happens when a Joe Schmo is thrust into proving his mettle through the same type of scenario? What would those films look like through a Shaun of the Dead filter?
The answer arrives in the form of Adam Randall‘s Level Up, a high-concept thriller wherein slacker Matt (Josh Bowman) is...

"Keep your eye on the prize, Matthew." FilmBuff has unveiled an official Us trailer for an action thriller called Level Up, about a deadbeat gamer whose beautiful girlfriend is kidnapped. In order to find her, he must deliver a package following the instructions sent to him on a mobile phone the kidnappers give him. Starring Josh Bowman, Leila Mimmack, Christina Wolfe, Neil Maskell, William Houston and Kulvinder Ghir. There's really nothing interesting about this, and the concept isn't that new, especially with Nerve this year and the Crank movies previously and so many other movies just like this. I dig the colorful hats the kidnappers are wearing, but that's about the only original idea in this trailer. Have a look. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Adam Randall's Level Up, direct from FilmBuff's YouTube: A deadbeat gamer's girlfriend is kidnapped. Her kidnappers keep in contact with him by phone,...

ITV's Midwinter Of The Spirit heads into its ultimate good vs evil showdown with a fast-paced barnstormer of a finale...
This review contains spoilers.
“You are not ready! Spiritually, or mentally!” yells Rev. Huw Owens (David Threlfall) midway through the final fifty-minute instalment of Midwinter Of The Spirit. If you’ve made it this far into the three-parter, you’ve already been spiritually and mentally tested with a crucifixion murder, the desecration of a local church, and lots – and lots – of character cigarette breaks. You’re ready for a finale of heel-face turns, shocks, and jittery SFX that look like nicotine withdrawal. But us viewers aren’t the yell-ees for Huw – that’s Merrily Watkins (Anna Maxwell-Martin) he’s shouting at, still swaying from her daughter (Sally Messham) having pissed off with a Satanic restaurateur (Siobhan Finneran) at the end of the previous episode, plus that pesky demonic possession thing...

20 year old newcomer Sally Messham, a final year student at Rada, has been cast as Jane Watkins, the daughter of exorcist Merrily, in ITV Encore’s new three-part drama Midwinter of the Spirit.
Sally (represented by Curtis Brown), will leave Rada early to take up the role alongside the double BAFTA award-winning actress Anna Maxwell-Martin who leads the cast as Merrily Watkins, a single mother who isn’t your average country vicar.
Merrily’s newly acquired training has put her on the dark side of the pulpit. She’s become one of the few women priests working as an exorcist - a job increasingly mistrusted by the modern Church and rarely talked about, even though it operates in virtually every diocese in the UK.
Merrily is deeply human in her doubts and scepticism, but her knowledge of the paranormal underworld brings her to the notice of local police who need...

Call girls never seem to learn. In the movies they are always falling for their johns, and that frequently doesn’t work out so well. It definitely goes bad quickly in The Sleeping Room. In the lovely coastal town of Brighton, in the United Kingdom, young lady of the night Blue (Leila Mimmack) makes the mistake of falling for Bill (Joseph Beattie), a newcomer to town who is rehabbing an old building that houses some very nasty secrets.

BBC One's Mayday has been intriguing an audience of over 4 million viewers all week with its dark murder mystery.
'Who killed 14-year-old May Queen Hattie?' is the big question, hidden beneath tales of seedy peeping Toms, twisted relationships, moody teens and a broken community. But have you figured out the culprit yet?
Peter Firth's Malcolm was the obvious suspect after an intense feud with Hattie, but after killing himself midway through the series, he looks likely to be a red herring.
Could it be Seth (Tom Fisher) or Steve (Sam Spruell), the brothers who both have connections with the late girl?
Or maybe you think the sinister-looking Everett, played to creepy lip-curling perfection by Aiden Gillen, went too far with one of his sexual dalliances?
Watch a clip of the final episode of Mayday:

Director: Julian Kerridge Writers: Martin Sadofski, Julian Kerridge Starring: Jack McMullen, Reece Noi, Leila Mimmack, Georgia Henshaw, Rita Tushingham, Maggie O'Neill, Andrew Knott Seamonsters tells the story of two shiftless young friends, Sam (Jack McMullen) and Kieran (Reece Noi), who are biding their time during the off-season in the English seaside town of Worthing. Sam and Kieran are stuck in a kind of shiftless limbo. Too old to be kids any more, they drift along without any plans for the future, vaguely aware that they’re expected to be adults. Kieran is skittish and unpredictable, perhaps a little bit crazy. Sam is quiet and sensitive, and tends to back down when challenged. Of course, even lifelong friendships can completely derail when a girl enters the picture. One day the boys meet Lori (Leila Mimmack), a mysterious, dark-eyed girl who’s somehow escaped their notice until now. Lori lives on the fringes with her sad,...

After the success of webseries Becoming Human (which attracted 1.5 million hits online), BBC3 were encouraged to stitch the eight episodes together into one 50-minute special that aired last night — premiering the story’s conclusion in the process. Continuing the story of Adam (Craig Roberts) from Being Human’s “Adam’s Family”, the 46-year-old vampire trapped in the body of a 17-year-old enrolls...
