Coincidentally, our Zoom chat is now happening at the exact moment Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón is giving a press conference in which he’ll recommend a resentencing for Erik and Lyle Menendez,...

Despite a welcome East Side renaissance in repertory screenings, genre fests, and classical retrospectives, Los Angeles as a sprawling industry town needs a banner festival where undiscovered gems, glitzy red carpet premieres, and especially international fare can earn equal ovation. Only AFI Fest, even if scaled down from the previous decade, fits the bill.
The festival’s full-time programming team travels year-long to festivals such as the Berlinale, Cannes, and TIFF to scout the finest work, and the weighty influence of the American Film Institute ensures the glamour and the gravitas. This year, the Angelina Jolie-starrer “Maria,” the world premiere of the latest Clint Eastwood movie, “Juror #2,” and the opening night documentary tribute “Music by John Williams” are all on-brand selections. Robert Zemeckis will be in conversation with Tom Hanks on Thursday before the sold-out Friday premiere of their latest collaboration, “Here.”

This installment of Ryan Murphy’s Monsters dramatizes the 1989 murder of José and Kitty Menendez.
Lyle and Erik Menendez were convicted of their parents’ murders in 1996. The brothers, currently serving lifetime imprisonment without possibility of parole, maintain their claim presented in court that they killed José and Kitty out of self-defense after years of physical, emotional and sexual abuse.
Over nine episodes, Lyle, played by Nicholas Chavez, and Erik, played by Cooper Koch, are portrayed through constantly shifting lenses and theories concerning the murders; the audience is volleyed back and forth between compassion and doubt. The show wants us to ask questions: Are the boys victims of abuse? Are they sociopaths? Did they kill out of self-defense? For money? To protect darker family secrets? The show has sparked particular controversy for implicating an incestuous relationship between the brothers.

From what we’ve gathered in recent months, Doctor Strange 3 is currently in development at Marvel Studios. Recent rumors suggest that Sam Raimi will return as director, with Benedict Cumberbatch and Benedict Wong reprising their roles.
The film will feature Dormammu, one of Strange’s most iconic villains, and it’s speculated that this will tie in with rumors of a larger role for Charlize Theron’s Clea in the upcoming installment.
In a recent interview with Variety, Bruce Campbell hinted that another character might make a return, this time in a significantly larger role. In Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Campbell plays Pizza Poppa, a pizza vendor in New York City.
Pizza Poppa encounters Doctor Strange and America Chavez when Chavez steals a pizza ball, believing food is free in their universe. However, Pizza Poppa quickly realizes the theft and demands payment, revealing that food isn’t free where they are.

Some bands make their journey to the Fountain of Rockness to take a sip or two; others merely to gargle. But the Hard Quartet dip their four sets of lips into those waters and drink deep. They gather together for an indie-rock supergroup of kindred spirits, resulting in a shaggily delightful album of casual guitar kicks. In this corner: Stephen Malkmus, from Pavement and the Jicks. In that one: Matt Sweeney, from Chavez and Superwolf. They’re joined by Dirty Three drum legend Jim White and Ty Segall bassist Emmett Kelly.

The two weeks since Ryan Murphy released Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story haven’t exactly been uneventful.
In the wake of the nine-part series detailing and often dramatizing the 1989 killings of José and Kitty Menendez at the hands of their sons, the Menendez family cried foul about the portrayal, millions of Netflix subscribers watched and Kim Kardashian visited the California prison where the Menendez brothers are currently serving life sentences without the possibility of parole. On Thursday, however, things got really interesting. Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón announced their case was under review for possible resentencing, a result of the accusations of abuse levied by the Menendez brothers against their late parents — accusations ignored in the trial leading to their convictions but bolstered by its depiction on Murphy’s Netflix drama and other key developments. Ryan Murphy isn’t planning a Season 2 of Netflix’s “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” but that doesn’t mean he’s completely done with the story.
With news today that a court hearing has been set for Erik and Lyle Menendez as Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón considers new evidence that they were allegedly molested by their father, Murphy may consider extending the season.
“I think what I would be interested in doing, if Nicholas [Alexander Chavez] and Cooper [Koch] would agree to do it, is maybe one or two episodes that continue the story,” Murphy told me Thursday afternoon.
Chavez and Koch star as Lyle and Erik, respectively, in the show, which chronicles the brothers’ conviction and sentencing to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the first-degree murder of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, in 1989.

Mark Chavez, one of the doctors being charged in the death of Matthew Perry, has pleaded guilty to one federal count of conspiracy to distribute ketamine. He faces up to 10 years in federal prison, with sentencing set for April 2nd.
“Chavez has agreed to plead guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute ketamine and has signed a plea agreement,” the Justice Department said. “At his arraignment [United States Magistrate Judge Jean P. Rosenbluth] will set a date for Chavez’s change of plea proceeding – or direct the parties to contact the chambers of the federal district judge assigned to the case to set the hearing date.“
During a previous hearing, Chavez was released on a $500,000 bond and was stripped of his medical license. His attorney, Matthew Binninger, has said that Chavez is “incredibly remorseful” for his role in Perry’s death. The actor was just 54 years old when he died last October from the “acute effects of ketamine.

Nicholas Alexander Chavez says his final callback audition to play Lyle Menendez in Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” was not like others he had ever been on.

When Cooper Koch and Nicholas Chavez signed on to be the stars of Ryan Murphy’s “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” — about the highly publicized parricide case that briefly captured the country’s attention in the early 1990s — they were aware there would likely be backlash. And sure enough, in the past week, the internet has been abuzz with critiques of the show, from journalists to Erik Menendez and the Menendez family calling out the series’ homoerotic portrayal of unsubstantiated fraternal incest and its moves to cast doubt on the brothers’ decades-old claim that years of ritualistic sexual abuse was what led them to murder their parents.

Following the incredible success of “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan have teamed up to tackle the second installment of their “Monster” anthology series for Netflix, “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.”
The limited series seeks to discover who the real monsters in the high-profile murder trial were. The Menendez brothers captivated America, as their televised Court TV trial is one of the first of its kind. The two boys killed their parents on Aug. 20, 1989, at only 18 and 21 years old. Their counsel called it self defense, while the prosecution called them greedy. Both were convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after two trials.
Murphy assembled established actors like Javier Bardem, Nathan Lane, and Chloë Sevigny to embody the real-life adult characters but brought on some newcomers to portray the Menendez brothers themselves.

Lyle and Erik Menéndez‘s family are questioning who’s the real “monster” following Ryan Murphy‘s recent Netflix portrayal.
On Wednesday, Erik’s wife Tammi Menéndez shared a letter written by his aunt Joan VanderMolen on behalf of 24 extended family members, showing their support for the brothers and criticizing Murphy’s “repulsive” depiction of their 1989 murder of parents José and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menéndez in Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menéndez Story.
“We are virtually the entire extended family of Erik and Lyle Menéndez,” VanderMolen started in the letter. “We are 24 strong and today we want the world to know we support Erik and Lyle.
