Rio De Janeiro — Latin America’s largest creativity event, Rio2C, will gather over June 4-9 at the Cidade das Artes complex, in Rio de Janeiro, about 50,000 participants, up from 44,000 last year, including some 1,600 speakers and representatives of about 1,100 companies.
Modelled after SXSW, the fifth in-person edition of Rio2C will feature over 500 panels designed to promote the convergence of film/TV, music, innovation, tech, games, publishing, science, fashion, sustainability and sports.

As of this writing the frontrunner to win this year’s Oscar for Best Original Screenplay is “The Holdovers” with 69/20 odds based on the combined predictions of Gold Derby users. What was previously behind it in second place was “Barbie,” yet the Academy recently declared that script to be adapted despite Warner Bros. campaigning it as original. With “Barbie” out of the way, “Past Lives” is now in second place in this category with 4/1 odds. But I think it actually has a shot of taking down “The Holdovers” for the win.

The Globes only offer one screenplay category rather than splitting into two with original and adapted like most other awards groups. This means that if your film gets into this category, they really, really love your writing.

His second movie, “Election,” was nominated for only Adapted Screenplay in 2000 after it turned Tom Perrotta’s 1998 novel of the same name into a film. Payne was nominated with his writing partner Jim Taylor, although they lost to John Irving for “The Cider House Rules.” “Sideways” then picked up five nominations in 2005 including an Adapted Screenplay bid for Payne and Taylor after they turned Rex Pickett’s 2004 novel of the same name into a hit movie. Payne and Taylor won this time around.
In 2012, “The Descendants” repeated the record of “Sideways,” matching five nominations and one Adapted Screenplay victory. This time, Payne won alongside Nat Faxon and Jim Rash. They adapted the 2007 novel of the same name from Kaui Hart Hemmings.

Spanish series Entrevias has won the audience award in the fiction section of the inaugural South International Series Festival which wrapped yesterday (October 12). Music documentary series Macarena won the audience prize in the festival’s non-fiction section.
Entrevias, now in its third season, is produced by Mediaset España and Alea Media for Telecinco. The series centres on a war veteran who takes matters into his own hands when his teenage granddaughter falls victim to the drug dealers overtaking his neighbourhood.

Film Factory Entertainment has acquired sales rights to “Blondi,” the feature debut of Argentina’s Dolores Fonzi, star of Santiago Mitre’s Cannes Critics’ Week winner “Paulina.”

The Rio Intl. Film Festival wrapped Monday amid political tension and with a strong local competition that awarded Marcelo Gomes’ “Paloma” the top film prize. It is based on the true story of a poor trans woman who struggled to marry her partner in a religious ceremony.
Following compact editions over the past three years, Rio Fest – traditionally Latin America’s main film fest – regained part of its original size and importance, as it premiered locally about 120 features selected from the top international film fests, resumed outdoor screenings and featured a hybrid market.
The highlight was Premiere Brasil, the competition of 86 features and shorts for the Redentor kudos.
Adirley Queiros’ and Joana Pimenta’s “Mato Seco em Chamas,” a Brazil/Portugal coproduction, received the jury special prize. The pic combines both fiction and doc elements to tell the story of two sisters who lead a gang that sells oil stolen from a pipeline.

Carlos Gardel, the most famous figure in tango history, is set to become the subject of a bio-series made by Kapow, the Argentine producer of HBO Max/Amazon hit “La Jauría,” and Luis Ortega, director of episodes of Netflix’s “El Marginal” as well as smash hit true crime feature “El Angel.”
Currently being written by Ortega, with partner Rodolfo Palacios at their prodco El Despacho, which will co-produce the series, the series should be ready for presentation by around the end of May, Ortega told Variety.

Exclusive: Gaumont, the production company behind series including Netflix’s Narcos and Apple TV+’s Stillwater, is shaking up its U.S. division with Nicolas Atlan taking over and Gene Stein exiting.

Argentine sales agency FilmSharks Intl. has inked international rights to “The Adopters,” a comedy production from Tomás Lipgot’s Buenos Aires-based Duermevela, Pablo Ingercher’s Oh My Gómez Films and Patricio Rabuffetti-founded Non Stop.
A same-sex romantic comedy, “The Adopters” marks the second solo directorial effort of Argentine Daniel Gimelberg, who debuted with “Before” and co-directed “Hotel Room” alongside Catalan auteur Cesc Gay. Gimelberg also served as art director on “The Last Elvis,” from the Oscar-winning Armando Bo,and Juan Taratuto’s “It’s Not You, It’s Me,” among other titles.
Starring Diego Gentile (Damián Szifron’s “Wild Tales”), Rafel Spregelburd (Lucrecia Mertel’s “Zama”), key cast also includes Marina Bellati, Florencia Peña and Radagast. In “The Adopters,” TV conductor Martin confesses his need to be a father with his partner Leonardo. Both in their forties, one shows anxiety while the other expresses insecurity and reluctance, testing the strength of the decade-long relationship.

Exclusive: Viacom is set to adapt a number of Alfred Hitchcock movies into television series in Latin America and is on the verge of selling two Portuguese-language originals to major Svod players as it ramps up its content strategy in the region.
The company is officially launching Viacom International Studios, which brings together its Latin production divisions including Telefe’s studios, Brazilian comedy unit Porta dos Fundos and Viacom’s own branded production unit, at the La Screenings later this week.

For the first time in festival history, Spanish productions — Asghar Farhadi’s “Everybody Knows,” Terry Gilliam’s “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote” — will both open and close Cannes. In all, five Spanish titles made the festival cut, a recent record.
Such films speak of foreign auteurs’ fascination with Spain and its culture. They remain, however, “a minority” in Spain, says Juan Gordon at Morena Films, whose Alvaro Longoria produced “Everybody Knows.”
