No surprise that “Inside Out 2,” which raked in a record-breaking box office of $1.6 billion, racked up a record number of views in its first five days of streaming on Disney+. This sequel to the 2015 Oscar-winning “Inside Out,” continues the story of Riley, who is now a teenager.
In the first film, Riley was a little girl dealing with the turmoil of moving from Minnesota to San Francisco. Her various emotions were given voice. Joy (Amy Poehler) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith) learned to live together with able assists by Lewis Black (Anger), Bill Hader (Fear), and Mindy Kaling (Disgust).
Hader and Kaling were unable to return for the sequel, with Tony Hale and Liza Lapira and stepping into the voice booth. Making their debuts are four more emotions: Anxiety (Maya Hawke), Envy (Ayo Adebiri), Ennui (Adèle Exarchopoulos), and Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser).

“Inside Out 2” introduces several news emotions in Riley’s head, but it also welcomes back some familiar favorites from the first film. No matter your preference among them though, you’re going to recognize many of their voices.
Now 13 years old and getting ready to head into high school — without her best friends, as it turns out — Riley has officially hit puberty, and it’s unsurprisingly rough goings. It means dealing with Anxiety and Envy and Embarrassment, and Riley quickly loses her sense of self.
Though those emotions might be a headache for her, they’re fun for fans, especially considering who’s voicing them.
Here are the voices you might recognize in the “Inside Out 2” cast now that the film is streaming on Disney+.

The box office smash Inside Out 2, from Disney and Pixar, is confirmed for Disney+ UK at the end of this very month.
Currently sitting as the biggest film of the year at the global box office, the record-shattering sequel Inside Out 2 has given Disney, Pixar and multiplexes one hell of a shot in the arm this year. For Pixar in particular it’s been good to see, given how Disney has shortchanged so many of its films in recent years by letting them bypass cinemas and going direct to its Disney+streaming service.
In the case of Inside Out 2, it is going to streaming of course, but only several months after its cinema debut. In fact, we’ve got word now that Disney will be putting the film on its Disney+ service from 25th September 2024. That’s two weeks away from the point this story is being written.

Contra what feels like all known odds, Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis––40 years after he completed an initial draft––opens in one month and one day. Thus a promotional roll-out has begun: first with a trailer that (hilariously) positioned itself against critical establishment while (just-as-hilariously) using fake quotes to make its point; now, more substantially, in a must-read interview from Rolling Stone‘s David Fear that covers much lay of the land––the film’s long gestation, its production (chaotic or otherwise), its controversies (kissed extras among them), how James Gandolfini helped shape it 20-plus years ago, etc. and so on.
Towards interview’s end, Fear asks Coppola about his next stages. While a big question for anybody of such advanced age, Coppola says there are at least two more films he hopes to make:
I’m working on two potential projects right now. One is a regular sort of...

Eddie Egan, a very real marketing consultant, lost his gig with Lionsgate this week after the studio discovered that quotes he used in a trailer for Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis were fabricated, according to Variety.
The conceit behind the teaser, which Lionsgate recalled on Wednesday, was that critics had trashed Coppola’s masterpieces throughout the decades, so why trust them? Except that the critics quoted didn’t actually write any of the pith. A quote attributed to Pauline Kael that was said to have run in The New Yorker,...

First reactions to Rupert Sanders' bloody new adaptation of "The Crow" are rolling in, and it doesn't seem like the remake is going to take flight. At the time of this article's submission, it has an abysmal 22% Rotten Tomatoes critical score, meaning that just over 1 in 5 industry professionals gave the movie a negative review. It's a low grade, but it's not entirely unexpected for a movie that was controversial before it was ever even made.
The root of "The Crow" remake skepticism harkens back to the original film's tragic production, during which rising star Brandon Lee was killed in a gun-related accident that fueled speculation of a curse on the film. Superstition aside, fans of Lee — and of the original film — have been vocal for years about their disinterest in another "The Crow" adaptation, even as multiple sequels to the original have been released to little fanfare. Sanders' version has been years in the making,...

Pixar's "Inside Out" took us inside the head of an 11-year-old girl named Riley as she coped with moving across the country and coming to terms with the complicated feelings that come with beginning a new chapter in life. The animated movie delivered a story that pulled at everyone's heartstrings and provided us with plenty of laughs through the anthropomorphized emotions of Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Anger (Lewis Black), Fear (Bill Hader), and Disgust (Mindy Kaling).
Nearly 10 years later, we returned to Riley's mind as she turned 13 years old and suddenly found herself feeling all sorts of new sophisticated emotions while making new friends at a summer hockey camp. Disney and Pixar previewed the first trailer for the upcoming “Inside Out” television series, called “Dream Productions,” at D23.
“Thank you for making ‘Inside Out 2’ the number 1 animated film of all time,” Pixar’s Pete Docter said onstage at D23 in Anaheim. “If you love the film as much as we do, i’ve got some great news.”
Docter said the new series, coming in 2025, is set between the first and second installments of the film — it’s an in-betweenquel.
The show is set in a studio where Riley’s dreams are made every night — on time and on budget. Some memories need extra processing, so they are sent to Dream Productions, and when Riley falls asleep, we see the film crew making the dreams like a film set.

According to critics, Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Jamie Lee Curtis couldn’t save Borderlands from being so bad that it’s even bad for a video game movie.
Ever since the genre first took off in the 1990s, movie adaptations of popular game franchises have long been the bane of serious film critics and a boon for giant studios in search of a summer box-office success. Though 1993’s Super Mario Bros., the first live-action video game adaptation in Hollywood history, failed on both a critical and commercial level, films such as Street Fighter (1994) and Mortal Kombat (1995) proved that a cheesy, over-the-top and poorly-acted video game movie could turn a respectable profit while simultaneously pissing off Roger Ebert so bad that he would soon declare war on video games themselves.

Emotions are riding high at Pixar Studios as Inside Out 2 overtakes The Avengers as one of Hollywood’s Top 10 highest-grossing movies worldwide! Several weeks into the animated sequel’s release, Inside Out 2 feels joyous. With a global total of $1.524B, it surpasses Furious 7 ($1.515B) and The Avengers ($1.521B) to claim the 10th spot on the all-time list.
Inside Out 2 is earning plenty of domestic dollars but is also a smash overseas with $905.1M. It’s the highest-grossing film ever in Mexico. Astonishingly, the international total does not include Japan, where the film opens today. In other words, a whole different market is waiting to experience Inside Out 2 and add to Pixar’s coffers.

If you’re as terminally online as I am, you see Tony Hale’s face every day.
The actor best known for “Veep” and “Arrested Development” is a household name for comedy fans, even if he enjoys a degree of anonymity in his day-to-day.
“People are just really nice,” he told IndieWire, along with an anecdote of the previous night when a restaurant hostess shared her appreciation of his work. “But then — my wife is from Alabama — I go to Alabama and no one’s watching or has watched ‘Veep’ or ‘Arrested.’ So it’s not that kind of really high fame.”
It’s the kind of fame that prompts people to shout “Buster!” at him in the street, or character-specific things like “You’ve got two hands” — the kind of fame that comes from being on two heavily-memed shows, at least one of which was all over social media...

Have you ever wondered what “Love Island” would be like if it were set in the 1300s? Netflix’s new dark-comedy series “The Decameron” will answer all of your questions.
The series, created by Kathleen Jordan and executive produced by “Orange Is the New Black” and “Weeds” alum Jenji Kohan, is loosely based on Italian Author Giovanni Boccacio’s short story collection from the mid-14th century. The plot begins after “The Black Death strikes hard in the Italian countryside in 1348, and a handful of nobles retreat to a grand villa with their servants. But what starts as a wine-soaked sex romp descends into a race for survival in this soapy dark comedy,” according to the official description.
Keep reading to find out what stars are traveling back in time to the 1340s in our complete “The Decameron” cast and character guide. The show is now streaming on Netflix.

Pixar’s Inside Out 2 has now become the highest grossing animated film ever, surpassing Frozen 2. More on it below.
Inside Out 2 has been a much needed hit for Pixar and it’s also a bloody good film. Shortly after the film’s release, it became the highest grossing film of 2024 and it’s now the highest grossing animated film in history, as reported by Variety. Not too shabby.
The Pixar sequel shattered the record formerly held by Disney’s Frozen 2, released in 2019. Inside Out 2, released in June to rave reviews, only took six weeks to claim the title. Its global box office takings hover at around $1.46bn. That’s a billion, not million. It also took the sequel only 19 days to break the magical billion dollar limit. In comparison, Frozen 2 grossed $1.45bn during its theatrical run.
Inside Out 2 follows the emotions in teenage girl Riley’s head.

Animated motion picture history is upon us, friends! Pixar‘s Inside Out 2 is the highest-grossing animated film ever after surpassing Disney’s Frozen 2 at the global box office. The emotionally charged sequel achieved this milestone after six weeks of release, with a total domestic value of $601 million and $861 million internationally, totaling $1.46 billion! This astonishing achievement unseats Disney’s Frozen 2 after the sing-a-long sequel banked $1.45 billion at the box office. Disney’s The Lion King remake made an astounding $1.65M, but the Jon Favreau-directed film is technically a live-action CGI hybrid.
Looking at the numbers, Inside Out 2 beat Greta Gerwig’s Barbie in ticket sales, becoming the 13th-biggest movie ever. It is also the fastest animated movie to surpass the $1 billion mark after 19 days of release. Moreover, Pixar’s sequel is the highest-grossing film of 2024.

Joy must be working overtime in the minds of Disney’s higher-ups, because Inside Out 2 continues to make money. Heading into Fourth of July weekend, the film has stayed at number one and looks to drop off small again, even with challenger Despicable Me 4. But before the film released, fans had to deal with one of the new emotions introduced in the film: anxiety. And that’s because Disney Pixar was messing with the formula that made the first film so wonderful by switching out the voices for two of the central character.
The first Inside Out from 2015 focused on Joy (Amy Poehler) and her opposite Sadness (Phyllis Smith), two of the emotions living inside the head of pre-teen Riley. The two learn to deal with one another as Riley moves with her parents from Minnesota to California, which upsets her otherwise calm life.

The ongoing struggle to elevate animated features to the same level of best-picture recognition as live-action films will undoubtedly resurface by year’s end. This time, the spotlight will be on Pixar’s highly successful sequel, “Inside Out 2,” a film that could bring joy and success amid a dark cloud hovering around Hollywood studios.
With debut director Kelsey Mann taking over from Pete Docter, the second installment follows Riley (Kensington Tallman) during her teenage years. Along with her core emotions — Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Anger (Lewis Black), Fear, and Disgust — she begins encountering new emotions, notably Anxiety (Maya Hawke).
The first film had a budget of $175 million and made $858 million worldwide. It received two Oscar noms for original screenplay and animated feature, winning the latter. However, during the era when the Academy recognized 5-10 movies for best picture, it didn’t land among the eight that included...

[Editor’s note: Spoilers for “Inside Out 2” below.]
There’s a lot to unpack psychologically in “Inside Out 2” (currently in theaters), which adds more emotional complexity to the franchise. This provided Pixar with imaginative visual opportunities along with a lot more screen time for teen Riley (Kensington Tallman).
Which means puberty literally takes a wrecking ball to Riley’s emotional stability, signaling the arrival of Anxiety (Maya Hawke), Envy (Ayo Edebiri), Ennui (Adèle Exarchopoulos), and Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser). Anxiety sees herself as an agent of change in reshaping Riley’s future in high school, and hockey camp offers the first opportunity to test her ideas. When Joy (Amy Poehler) and her front-line team of Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Anger (Lewis Black), Fear (Tony Hale), and Disgust (Liza Lapira) refuse to cooperate, Anxiety throws away Riley’s crystal-shaped Sense of Self and banishes them to her Vault of Secrets as suppressed emotions.

Back in 2015, Pixar's "Inside Out" brought us into the mind of Riley, a young girl living with her family in Minnesota. We watched as Riley grew up through the eyes of her core emotions: Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Anger (Lewis Black), Fear (Bill Hader), and Disgust (Mindy Kaling). Each of the emotions helped shape Riley's life experiences, but as she got older and dealt with the challenge of moving from Minnesota to San Francisco, it brought a lesson for both Riley and Joy.
While Joy was always trying to make sure Riley was happy, the energetic emotion had to realize that sometimes it's okay for Riley to be sad, and experiencing sadness can ultimately bring us right back to happiness. But as we left Riley on the cusp of her becoming a teenager at the end of "Inside Out," there were still many more lessons for Riley and Joy to learn.

Move out of the way, Sadness: “Inside Out 2” just scored the biggest box office previews of 2024.
Disney and Pixar’s latest animated outing grossed $13 million in Thursday previews domestically, plus $22.3 million internationally. The family-friendly sequel is projected to launch between $80 million and $90 million this weekend.
A debut on the higher end would give “Inside Out 2” the biggest opening of the year. Warner Bros. currently holds the top two spots of 2024 with “Dune: Part Two” at $82.5 million and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” at $80 million.
For reference, “Inside Out 2’s” $13 million in domestic box office previews outpaced last year’s “The Little Mermaid” ($10.3 million), “Minions: The Rise of Gru” ($10.8 million) and “Toy Story 4” ($12 million). It falls a bit short of recent animated superhero sequels like “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” ($17.4 million) and “Incredibles 2” ($18.5 million).

Spoilers for "Inside Out 2" follow.
Something remarkable happens near the end of "Inside Out 2": a character has an anxiety attack. Is this a first for an animated Disney film? It just might be. This isn't the first animated film to depict a panic attack — the surprisingly excellent 2022 film "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish" did it, and did it well. But for the House of Mouse, this feels like a monumental moment. Not only does "Inside Out 2" showcase an anxiety attack, but it does so in a realistic, harrowing way. As someone who suffers from anxiety and depression, seeing such a moment depicted in a major movie aimed at kids felt almost seismic, as if I didn't know such an action was permitted. I imagine that seeing this scene will upset some younger viewers, but it might also open their eyes to thoughts and feelings they're grappling to understand.

At the end of Pixar's phenomenal "Inside Out," the core emotions of Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust, and Fear are given a new console in Headquarters to better equip the workers for the changes heading toward their girl, Riley Andersen. They've successfully helped her in her transition from Minnesota to the San Francisco Bay Area, prevented her from trying to run away from home, and helped restore Riley to the wonderful girl she's always been. She's on a new hockey team, the Fog Horns, and is embracing a new chapter in her life. But along with the console upgrades like the complete curse world library, there's a little section that reads "Puberty," which Joy (Amy Poehler) brushes off as "probably not important." Oh, Joy. "Inside Out 2" begins with a catch-up of what we've missed...
You fool. You silly, optimistic fool.

Well, now we’re in “prime” Summer movie season mode as one of the big “crowd-pleasing” studios drops its 28th feature film into the multiplexes this weekend. Oh, and it is truly animated with eye-popping visuals and splendid imaginative designs. And after the animal stars dominating the cartoon landscape this year with Kung Fu Panda and Garfield, we’re focusing on a human being, Well, mostly what’s going on in this teenager’s head, so we’re revisiting a set of creatures based on emotions and meeting a bunch of new “feelings”. Of course, I’m speaking of Pixar, who have decided to produce a sequel to a much-admired Oscar-winning 2015 “dramedy/fantasy”, after several interesting original flicks like Soul, Turning Red, and Elemental (so don’t think they’re just exploiting their “IP”). Yes, it’s been nine years, but animation can “tweak” time, so it’s only been...

Inside Out 2 Image: Disney/Pixar When it comes to sequels, Pixar’s track record has been mixed, to say the least. At the upper end of the quality scale there’s Toy Story 2, not only one of the best sequels to come from Pixar, but one of the best sequels ever made.

It’s been a difficult stretch for Pixar. In the near-decade since Inside Out became a creative and commercial hit, the animation powerhouse doubled down on a variety of so-so sequels before spiraling into a drought throughout the pandemic. It didn’t help that it used the quarantine period as an excuse to drop two autobiographically inspired and richly conceived tales––Luca and Turning Red––onto Disney+, losing some of its prestige in the process. After Lightyear, which was primed to fuel up the studio’s theatrical prospects again, sputtered on the tarmac two summers ago and last year’s Elemental struggled to make an opening splash, Pixar faced another crossroads.
In the same way it returned to its bona fide properties after The Good Dinosaur’s disappointment in 2015, the studio has reignited the sequelization after-burners for its sure-fire successes. That’s a nice way of saying Pixar has recommitted to developing broader,...

Pixar has a knack for making stories about the turbulence of adolescence universally relatable. Their latest offering, the splendid sequel to 2015’s Inside Out, appropriately titled Inside Out 2 doesn’t necessarily continue the narrative of the first film, more so than it continues the development of the film’s protagonist.
Following the events of the first film – wherein young Riley found herself and her family uprooted from their Midwest home and relocated to San Francisco – Inside Out 2 picks up with Riley rapidly approaching the next big challenge of her life – puberty.
As the film begins, Riley and her friends are preparing to head to a hockey camp in preparation for attending a new high school as well as possibly making the school’s hockey team. Initially, Riley and her friends, as well as the core emotions within her head – Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Anger (Lewis Black...

Inside Out 2 hits theaters in just a few days, but fans of the original might notice that the characters of Disgust and Fear sound slightly different from the first movie.
Mindy Kaling and Bill Hader played Disgust and Fear respectively in 2015's Inside Out, but opted not to return for the sequel. In the 2024 Pixar film, the characters are played by Liza Lapira and Tony Hale.
Lapira and Hale will be joined by several of today's comedy stars who will reprise their roles, including Amy Poehler (Joy) and Phyllis Smith (Sadness).

Riley (Kensington Tallman), the little girl audiences were first introduced to in 2015’s Inside Out, is navigating typical teenage life in Inside Out 2. Early in the film, she gets invited to an advanced hockey tryout at her soon-to-be-new high school with her two besties, only to find out that they aren’t going to the same school, and that the badass jock girls at the new school are bigger, stronger, and cooler. While it’d be nice if she knew how to deal with that in an emotionally mature way, unfortunately, she’s literally got a lot more on her mind.
When we last saw her in the original film, Riley had one core group of anthropomorphic emotions running around the crystalline control center in her head, guiding her decisions: Joy (Amy Pohler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust, and Fear. After the big red puberty alarm goes off,...

Plot: Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust have been doing a good job managing the emotions of their beloved human, Riley. But, as she enters her teenage years, they have their hands full dealing with a whole new slate of emotions, including the obstructive, controlling Anxiety.
Review: Ever since the pandemic, Pixar’s been struggling to recapture the zeitgeist its animated films were once so easily able to dominate. For a long time, it was almost uncanny how each film was hailed as a masterpiece, only for the company to fall off when suddenly their films became more commonly viewed via streaming than in theatres. Some say the movies got to be too specific, although for me I’d take a highly personal story like Elemental over the more generic Lightyear any day. At any rate, the company is said to be undergoing a pivot towards more universal stories, although...
