Exclusive: CSI creator Anthony E. Zuiker has been tapped as writer, executive producer and showrunner for The Quiet Tenant, a limited series adaptation of the horror/suspense debut novel by Clémence Michallon. Also boarding the project, which is in development at Blumhouse Television, is the media company launched last December by Oscar winner Charlize Theron, veteran media executive/producer Dawn Olmstead and Theron’s Denver & Delilah partners Beth Kono and Aj Dix, which now has a name, Secret Menu.
The Quiet Tenant is a psychological thriller about kidnapper and serial killer Aidan Thomas, narrated by those closest to him: his 13-year-old daughter, his girlfriend, and the one victim he has spared. It explores the psychological impact of Aidan’s crimes on the women in his life — and the bonds between those women that give them the strength to fight back.

At their best, films aimed at young kids can be enjoyed by adults as well and truly earn the "family movie" title. 2023 brought plenty of titles that fit the bill, from box office hits like "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" and "Migration" to streaming treats like "Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget" and "Leo."
Now it's 2024's turn to show us what it's got, and while the early months of the year tend to be pretty dry when it comes to family movies, as studios are holding them back for school vacations and long summer days, there are some fresh, funny, and heartwarming new releases on offer. From a new "Peanuts" special to a fantasy movie filled with dragon-related perils to the latest high-flying antics of "Kung Fu Panda," here are the best family movies of 2024 so far.

I’ve said this many times, but I state it again: I’m a super fan of the fantasy genre. Whether it’s because The Lord of the Rings saga remains my favorite after all these years or because it’s a genre that allows exploring the true immersive, escapist potential of cinema, I’ve always felt a special connection with this type of storytelling set in a completely imaginary world, full of mythical beings, breathtaking kingdoms and castles, and uniquely unforgettable creatures. Therefore, the mere fact that Damsel is an original fantasy story automatically set my expectations for this Netflix movie higher than usual.
Directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) and written by Dan Mazeau (Fast X), Damsel follows the story of Elodie (Millie Bobby Brown), a young woman from a poor kingdom who sees an opportunity to change her life, as well as that of her people and family,...

Millie Bobby Brown is addressing criticism she’s been receiving for her accent.
The Stranger Things star grew up between England and the U.S. and has been criticized for the way she speaks in the projects she’s involved in. However, the young actress is firing back at those critics in a new interview.
“I’m an actor,” Brown said in an interview with Max Balegde on TikTok. “I grew up in the public eye. I grew up in America. I come to set and I’m an actor and I adapt, and so I want to mimic other people!”
She continued, “I can’t help that when I’m around my fiancé, or when I’m with people like Jimmy Fallon who have a very American accent, I wanna replicate it! And now I’m in England, I wanna replicate that [accent]! I don’t do it intentional, and...

When the young women lock eyes, a quiet intimacy blooms. Elodie (Millie Bobby Brown) doesn’t know the unnamed girl meeting her gaze from a balcony some distance away, but she feels connected to her. Their smiles awaken flashes of mutual recognition. They share a milky complexion and gentle regard. But this stranger is more than Elodie’s mirror; she is an eerie omen of the young princess’ fate.
In Damsel, Elodie tries to escape the conventions of her own story. Trapped in a world of manners and expectations, the princess seeks adventure and longs to prove her independence. The conceit is familiar: A handful of recent films (and TV shows) have given audiences royal women eagerly subverting the tropes of medieval romances. Disney’s Brave introduced Merida, a fiery archer who brought a more overt contemporary feminism to the entertainment conglomerate’s brand. The Princess starred Joey King as...

A medieval word with a highly specific (but often misused) meaning, “damsel” describes a young, unmarried lady-in-waiting. It’s also the broad title given many a helpless heroine in Hollywood movies — the proverbial “damsel in distress,” trussed to the train tracks or otherwise waiting to be saved. Elodie is neither of those in Netflix’s pleasantly disruptive fantasy story, which places “Enola Holmes” star Millie Bobby Brown squarely in control of her fate.
A revisionist fairy tale in which Elodie is hastily married off and served up as dragon chow to satisfy a generations-old curse, “Damsel” treats Elodie as an action hero for our less gender-rigid times. The loud-and-clear message, achieved by eliminating “distress” from the title (though it’s still an essential part of the formula): Passive damsels be damned! Here’s a woman who can fend for herself!

Damsel is the kind of Netflix movie that would feel right at home in the 2010s. It may be an original fairy tale of sorts, but it pulls from the same kind of girl power feminism that drove the “edgy” retellings of popular fairy tales like Snow White and the Huntsmen and Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters 10 years ago.
On the surface, Damsel might seem like a fresh and exciting take on a centuries old story. A young woman (Elodie) marries a prince to help her kingdom, but instead of living happily ever after, she gets sacrificed to a dragon and has to fight her way out of its lair. Despite the promise of that premise, the movie itself feels like such a shallow representation of what a story like this could be.

In our age of sprawling, ostentatious multi-film sagas about threats to imperial rule, Damsel’s mere existence as a completely standalone fantasy film almost feels like a blessing. Even better, the film is a welcome twist on the traditional princess narrative simply for giving its protagonist her agency without saddling her with too many archetypes.
Juan Carlos Fresnadillo’s film, written by Dan Mazeau, still treads through familiar fantasy terrain for its first 20 minutes, during which we meet Elodie (Millie Bobby Brown), a peasant girl whose father (Ray Winstone) and stepmother (Angela Bassett) have accepted an offer from a neighboring kingdom to marry her off to a handsome prince (Nick Robinson) in exchange for riches. The marriage goes off without a hitch. Elodie even has chemistry with the prince. But then the other shoe drops, and it becomes clear that the match is part of a grim ritual that’s...

It’s Millie Bobby Brown versus dragon in Netflix’s dark fantasy adventure. Here’s our review of Damsel:
By pure coincidence, Damsel arrives on Netflix almost exactly a century after German director Fritz Lang introduced what was likely cinema’s first dragon in 1924’s Die Nibelungen. Lang and his collaborators brought their fearsome creature to life with a mixture of rubber, mechanical joints and puppetry (plus a bit of cocaine if one account is to be believed), and the result has a physical presence that is still captivating 100 years later.
In Damsel, director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and production designer Patrick Tatopoulos used CGI to create their dragon, but it still has plenty of weight, personality, and most importantly, menace. Unlike the gigantic winged beasts of, say, 1981’s Dragonslayer (which had terrific animation from Phil Tippett) or 2002’s Reign Of Fire, Damsel’s dragon is also relatively compact – it’s...

Written by Dan Mazeau and directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, Damsel is based on the story of a damsel in distress. However, this distressed damsel doesn’t require any prince to save her, as she is equipped enough to save herself. Just like any other dark fantasy film—The Chronicles of Narnia or Maleficent—this film is replete with visual splendor. The most intriguing element of the lot is the wonderful cast of the movie. Casting renowned actors like Millie Bobby Brown (who is also known for her appearance in Stranger Things) has been an added advantage to the groundbreaking film.

Plot: A dutiful damsel agrees to marry a handsome prince, only to find the royal family has recruited her as a sacrifice to repay an ancient debt. Thrown into a cave with a fire-breathing dragon, she must rely on her wits and will to survive.
Review: The idea of the anti-fairy tale is nothing new. From the grounded Cinderella tale Ever After starring Drew Barrymore to the John Wick-inspired The Princess starring Joey King, outdated stories of helpless maidens needing to be rescued by Prince Charming have lost their appeal in recent years. With empowerment narratives sometimes going too far in the opposite direction, striking a balance between good storytelling without archaic stereotypes is a tricky endeavor. While Disney has tried to flip the script with animated projects like Frozen or the live-action Maleficent, Netflix has delivered an update to the age-old stories of dragons, royalty, and knights with their dark fantasy Damsel.

Disney CEO Bob Iger recently revealed that the studio has secretly “killed a few projects” that they didn’t think were strong enough. Could one of those projects have been the live-action adaptation of The Sword in the Stone?
28 Weeks Later director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo was attached to direct the live-action adaptation of The Sword in the Stone, but he recently told Collider that Disney has put the project on hold for now. “I was attached a long time ago, and I prepped a lot for Disney for that movie,” Fresnadillo said. “I don’t know exactly what happened, but the studio decided to hold the project. So right now it’s in a holding situation, and I don’t know what’s going to happen, to be honest. But I think it’s a great story. I would be so keen to make it if they decided to greenlight the project.

Stranger Things’ Millie Bobby Brown is entering another kind of Upside Down. In the Damsel trailer released Tuesday, Elodie, a disgraced princess, attempts to survive an impossible fate.
After a damsel (Brown) agrees to marry a prince, her body is chucked into a cave home to a fire-breathing dragon — the prince’s family sacrifices her to pay off a major debt. The offering is a century-long tradition marked by “honor and duty,” as the trailer shares, made clear as Elodie brushes her hand across the carved names of previously distressed damsels.

It's been a few months since Netflix has given us any updates on "Damsel," the upcoming fantasy thriller starring Millie Bobby Brown, but today we've finally been gifted a new look at the film and, of course, that dragon. The first trailer kept things mum, with Mbb staying completely silent throughout, emphasizing the action, spectacle, and gorgeous costuming. Netflix first presented the film with the tagline "This is Not a fairy tale," and today's new trailer looks like "Damsel" will be subverting all the typical tropes we associate with tales of princesses and larger-than-life beasts. Here's the official synopsis from Netflix:

By now, we are sure that she’s a Netflix princess, but not the kind who needs saving, and the first glimpse into Damsel just seems to have proven our point.
Millie Bobby Brown became a global sensation with Netflix’s smash-hit Stranger Things, which was the most-streamed show of 2022 on the streaming giant, with viewers tuning in for 52 billion minutes last year. Brown was exceptional as the telekinetic Eleven, which can be termed her breakthrough performance. She will begin shooting for the final installment in January, which is expected to premiere in the...

Good news for those suffering from Stranger Things withdrawal: Netflix has dated its new Millie Bobby Brown film.
Damsel, a fantasy feature from Spanish director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later), sees Brown playing a dutiful damsel who is selected by her queen to marry a handsome prince. But the dream turns into a nightmare when she realizes she’s being used by the royal family as a sacrifice to pay an ancient debt. Thrown into a cave with a fire-breathing dragon, she has to fight to survive.
Robin Wright plays the evil queen in a cast that also includes Angela Bassett, Ray Winstone, Nick Robinson and Shohreh Aghdashloo. Written by Dan Mazeau, Damsel‘s producers include Joe Roth (Maleficent), Jeff Kirschenbaum (Fast X) and Chris Castaldi (The Gray Man).
Netflix on Wednesday said that it will be bowing Damsel on its platform worldwide on March 8, 2024.

Millie Bobby Brown’s latest star turn for Netflix is Damsel, a fantasy action adventure that arrives in just a few months.
Thanks to Netflix now choosing to release viewing hours for all of its film and TV programming, we now know that between January and June of this year, the YA take on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s collection of detective tales, Enola Holmes 2, racked up over 30m hours worth of viewing. That places the film somewhere in Netflix’s top 600, but doesn’t account for the initial (and presumably huge) viewership spike when the film first launched (since it released in November of 2022).
Enola Holmes 2 was led by Millie Bobby Brown, who continues to be a major part of the streaming platform’s plans.
Not only have we heard talk of a third entry in the Elona Holmes series of films reportedly on the way, but...

Netflix has set a March 8, 2024 premiere date for the dark fairy tale action film Damsel starring Stranger Things‘ Millie Bobby Brown. The premiere date announcement was accompanied by a new teaser poster featuring an up-close photo of Brown’s left eye reflecting a dragon soaring overhead. It appears Brown’s keeping an eye out for that particular creature.
“We were so lucky to have Millie,” said Oscar-nominated filmmaker Juan Carlos Fresnadillo in an interview with Netflix’s Tudum. “She’s a very charismatic, sparkling personality. She has that quality that only stars have, which is you cannot take your eyes off her. She has the ability in this movie, in such a magical way, to bring the audience into her journey and take them into that kind of dark, intense, and thrilling adventure that she’s having. She’s the heart of the movie.

Millie Bobby Brown continues her Netflix reign with a new original film titled Damsel. The fantasy action film co-stars Ray Winstone, Nick Robinson, Shohreh Aghdashloo, with Angela Bassett and Robin Wright. Damsel signals a turn into more adult fare for the actress, who is set to end her run on Stranger Things after its upcoming season. Brown has also worked with the streamer on the Enola Holmes movies in addition to Damsel. The movie was initially planned for a 2023 release, but Netflix has confirmed that the film will now come out on March 8, 2024.
The official synopsis from Netflix reads,
“A dutiful damsel agrees to marry a handsome prince, only to find the royal family has recruited her as a sacrifice to repay an ancient debt. Thrown into a cave with a fire-breathing dragon, she must rely on her wits and will to survive.”

THR reports that Daniel Craig and Charlize Theron are set to star in Two for the Money, a heist thriller to be directed by Justin Lin.
Apple Original Films snagged the rights to the project in a heated multi-studio bidding war. Plot details are being kept under wraps at this time, but the film is said to follow “the evolution of the relationship between two career thieves [Daniel Craig & Charlize Theron] over the course of three big jobs.” Dan Mazeau, who worked with Justin Lin on Fast X, is writing the script for Two for the Money.

Charlize Theron and Daniel Craig as repartee-trading thieves in a heist thriller? That's certainly something we'd watch. Thank goodness, then, that it's becoming a reality via new film Two For The Money, which Apple has snapped up after a competitive bidding situation.
The genesis for this one comes from an unlikely place: :a[Fast X]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/movies/reviews/fast-x/' }. Because it was an idea that writer/director Justin Lin hatched with his co-writer on the movie, Dan Mazeau. Theron, who returned (albeit briefly) as the villainous Cipher for the film, liked the concept and pitched that Craig should co-star.
Lin, of course, left the latest Fast instalment after roughly a week’s shooting, citing creative differences. Which means he’s had time to focus on getting this one ready. According to The Hollywood Reporter, which broke the news, the plot is being kept in a vault.

Millie Bobby Brown has transformed into a hardcore warrior slaying dragons in the new trailer for her upcoming fantasy-action film ‘Damsel’. According to the movie’s official synopsis: “Brown (plays) a dutiful, well, damsel, who agrees to marry a handsome prince only to discover it was all a trap: The royal family recruited her as a sacrifice to repay an ancient debt. She’s then thrown into a cave with a fire-breathing dragon, relying solely on her wits and will to survive.”
Boasting some pretty good design, the clip opens with the ‘Stranger Things’ actress’ character Elodie already in the dragon’s lair, attempting to climb a treacherous cliff only to realise there is no escape.
Then it goes back in time to establish the rest of the world of the movie, and the way that Queen Isabelle serenely encourages the Princess to accept her sacrifice. A princess living a...

2024 will see the actress star in “Damsel,” an upcoming fantasy adventure from “28 Weeks Later” director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo that sees her playing a princess who is forced to take on a dragon once she realizes that her royal wedding was a ruse to offer her up as a ritualistic sacrifice. Netflix’s first two-minute teaser trailer for Damsel confirms the princess at the heart of the film isn’t of the damsel-in-distress variety. Stranger Things‘ Millie Bobby Brown slips into action mode as a princess who is forced to take on a fire-breathing dragon, among other dangerous tasks.
“What I really loved in the script from Dan Mazeau was embracing the idea of a fantasy adventure and a princess and dragon story, but taking it into a place [where] it’s completely upside down,” said Oscar-nominated director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo in an interview with Netflix’s Tudum. “It was a very intense journey that I was so excited to design and to develop. At the core, this is such a beautiful story about a young woman becoming a strong, independent, and empowered adult. Elodie doesn’t have any kind of support. It’s a real survival experience.”

Universal Pictures announced this morning that Fast X, the tenth main installment in its long-running action saga Fast & Furious, will head to Peacock September 15th following a theatrical run that kicked off in May.
Coming to the platform the same day are three other installments: Fast and Furious 6, Fate of the Furious, and Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw. And then, there’s Furious 7, which will be available for streaming there starting October 1st.
Fast X again reunites us with globe-trotting street racer Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his crew, who, ever since their saga started on the streets of L.A.’s underground racing scene, have overcome impossible odds to outsmart, out-nerve and outdrive every foe. Yet when the team took down a nefarious kingpin back in Brazil, they had no idea his son Dante (Jason Momoa) was watching from the shadows. More lethal than any other enemy they’ve faced,...

I am not a gearhead, so I have always looked at the Fast and the Furious franchise from a distance. But their popularity makes them hard to avoid. Fast X, the tenth installment in the series, arrives on disc and streaming this week from Universal Home Entertainment and no doubt entertains those who have been there from the beginning.
As with any franchise with multiple chapters, there’s the core set of characters and then all the supporting players who drop in and out of these chapters as needed. And, to keep things interesting, new players are added, usually the antagonist and maybe a new ally or frenemy.
Here, we have the sociopathic Dante (Jason Momoa) seeking vengeance on Dom (Vin Diesel) for the death of his father (Joaquim de Almeida) a decade earlier, as depicted in Fast Five. With seemingly limitless cash and men at his disposal, he has...

Fans of the “Fast and the Furious” franchise have grown accustomed to the series’ increasingly elaborate and outrageous set pieces. Given that “F9” climaxed with a scene in which characters literally drove a car into outer space, the pressure was on for “Fast X” director Louis Leterrier and screenwriters Dan Mazeau, Justin Lin, and Zach Dean to open their film with one of the best action sequences yet. The solution: A thrilling chase through the streets of Rome as bad guy Dante (Jason Momoa) sets loose a 10-ton bomb, and Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his team try to maneuver it away from the crowded city. The sequence consists of 554 shots, nearly all of which are a sophisticated combination of stunt driving, practical effects, and computer-generated imagery that are seamlessly blended into perhaps the most spectacular “Fast and Furious” sequence yet.

By now we should all know what to expect when we go to see a Fast and Furious film. They give us over-the-top, oftentimes ridiculous, action set pieces, and in between those set pieces will be Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) talking about family. Many people seem to have turned away from that ridiculousness, from the crazy, gravity and logic-defying moments each film gets, and instead call the films pointless. For myself, I accepted what these films are a long time ago, and if like me, you have accepted what they are too, then there is fun to be had.

I hope you’re ready to strap in for physics-defying stunts, ridiculous car chases, and ice-cold Coronas, because Fast X is now playing in theaters. The latest installment of the Fast & Furious franchise got off to a good start with $7.5 million in Thursday previews, but with a whopping budget estimated to be somewhere around $340 million, the sequel is going to have to pull out all the stops at the box-office.
Fast X find Dom Torretto (Vin Diesel) and his family confronting the most lethal opponent they’ve ever faced: A terrifying threat emerging from the shadows of the past who’s fueled by blood revenge, and who is determined to shatter this family and destroy everything — and everyone — that Dom loves, forever. In addition to Vin Diesel, Fast X stars Jason Staham, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jordana Brewster, Sung Kang, Jason Statham, John Cena,...

[This story contains spoilers for Fast X.]
Fast X director Louis Leterrier may have joined the Fast Saga in the most unusual of circumstances, but he’s made his presence felt in a big way.
Leterrier, who film fans know most as the helmer behind The Incredible Hulk (2008) and the Transporter franchise, replaced Fast mainstay Justin Lin, as the filmmaker departed the tenth chapter just one week into production. So when the offer to replace Lin came in, Leterrier, who was once in the running to direct The Fate of the Furious (2017), couldn’t resist the opportunity to finally join the franchise, even if it meant he’d be hitting the ground running with no time to prep. In fact, when he first walked onto set, he was immediately bowled over by Charlize Theron, who was going all out in a fight scene that was already being directed by the second unit.

Chicago – A lot of blockbusters require you to check your brain at the door. “Fast X” requires a full scale lobotomy. To the uninitiated, Vin Diesel’s blatant disregard for the laws of gravity and physics represents a full scale assault on the senses, reason, and logic in its effort to bring audiences down to its star’s lunkheaded level.
Rating: 2.0/5.0
We begin with an extended flashback to what is generally regarded as this motor-head franchise’s high point with the Bank Vault chase from Fast Five. Dante (Jason Momoa) is revealed to be the son of the drug lord Herman Reyes, whose money Dom (Vin Diesel) and company stole, and who died at the end of that movie.Turns out Dante has spent the ensuing decade, and the next four films, plotting his revenge and studying Dom and his extended family to make them suffer for the death of his father.

For all the frothy motions of the Fast & Furious franchise, whose characters at this point practically qualify as superheroes, the films have traditionally tried to ground their full-throttle, physics-defying set pieces with goofy yet good-hearted characterizations around relationships to family. You don’t come to these movies for interpersonal drama, but the best entries are aided by their attempts to keep things within the stratosphere of the relatable.
Fast X jumps the shark in that regard. On a scene-to-scene basis, Louis Leterrier’s film, which suggests a Masala production by way of the MCU, isn’t any more implausible than The Fate of the Furious and F9. But between its overly lit, ultra-saturated images and hammy performances, Fast X recalls the old Batman TV series, or a spy parody like Austin Powers in Goldmember.

Perhaps the biggest mistake the “Fast and Furious” franchise ever made was in “F9: The Fast Saga,” when the characters suddenly became self-aware and realized that after all the physics-defying vehicular mayhem they’ve been through, they always miraculously emerge unscathed.
How could they have defied the odds for so long? Are they truly immortal or are they merely blessed with impenetrable plot armor? And if any of those things are true why should the audience care one whit about what happens to them? Especially when even the characters who do die usually come back after a sequel or two.
“F9” made a convincing case for letting this whole “Fast and Furious” series finally end. But just when you thought it was okay to check out, “Fast X” pulls you back in. Louis Leterrier’s installment does an impressive job of making all the old nonsense make a little bit of sense again.
