Four-time Academy Award-nominated Ethan Hawke is attached to star in “The Last of the Tribe,” a jungle thriller set in Brazil’s Amazon. Written by Mark Bailey, “The Last of the Tribe” is produced by Brazil’s Academy Award-nominated Fernando Meirelles and Academy Award-winning producer Ed Saxon.

Hawke is set to play William Phelan — a washed-out Chicago cop turned corporate gun-for-hire — who finds himself in a wildly unfamiliar landscape, his assignment the murder of the last surviving member of an uncontacted Indigenous tribe.

“A broken man standing at an unlikely crossroads, Phelan is given the chance to save a life and reclaim his soul,” the film’s synopsis runs.

Lionsgate and Fifth Season are launching the project ahead of the Cannes market. The film represents a first collaboration between the two companies who are now looking into the possibility of a slate of films together.

Pic will be directed by Jan Komasa, the Polish director whose film Corpus Christi was recently Oscar nominated. Komasa also directed The Hater, which won Best International Narrative Feature at the Tribeca Film Festival.

Screenplay is by Lori Rosene-Gambino, based on an original story by Komasa and Rosene-Gambino.

Exclusive: Andreas Prochaska has signed on to direct the climbing film White Out for Chockstone Pictures.

The action-adventure pic is based on a story from climbing legend Reinhold Messner. It follows a young man who’s grown up in the shadow of a famous father, known as the world’s greatest mountaineer. In the end, it will take a perilous climb on a sacred Himalayan peak for the pair to finally face each other.

Olivia Hetreed (Girl with a Pearl Earring), Sascha Arango (The Silent Guest) and Don Bohlinger (Elles) wrote the script for White Out. The drama follows a young girl raised in a car outside a Florida trailer park, whose life is violently disrupted when her pure-hearted mother falls under the spell of a gun-running bad boy. The novel drew acclaim when it was published in 2019.

Taymor is coming off The Glorias, the drama about the life of Gloria Steinem that stars Julianne Moore, Alicia Vikander, Janelle Monáe and Bette Midler. She directed Frida and won a Tony for The Lion King on Broadway among her illustrious credits.

Polish filmmaker Jan Komasa, who scored a best international Oscar nomination earlier this year for “Corpus Christi,” will direct “Anniversary,” a drama of social apocalypse.

“Anniversary” will be produced by Nick Wechsler and Chockstone Pictures partners Steve Schwartz and Paula Mae Schwartz. Wechsler and the Schwartzes are no strangers to dark and edgy projects — they have collaborated on such films as “The Road” and “The Counselor.”

“I’m working on an intimate project about my most personal nightmare — a group of people who love each other being challenged by a devastating and inevitable force … a social virus,” said Komasa, whose most recent film, “The Hater,” which dealt with the dark underbelly of social media, won the best international narrative feature prize at the Tribeca Film Festival. It was also released in Poland in March but its successful theatrical run was cut short by the coronavirus pandemic.

Esteemed filmmaker Brian De Palma has lined up an adaptation of Sascha Arango’s The Truth and Other Lies as his next project, according to Deadline.

Pitched as a black comedy, Arango will pen the screenplay, flanked by producers Steve Schwartz, Paula Mae Schwartz and Wechsler. It’s a tale that centers on one Henry Hayden, a seemingly genuine author and all-round stand-up guy who has carved out a living as a writer.

Little does the literature world know that it’s actually his wife that penned the novels that shot him to stardom, and complications begin to arise thick and fast when the identity of Henry’s mistress is revealed – and to add fuel to the fire, she’s also pregnant.

Weinstein Books has acquired publishing rights for John Aldridge and Anthony Sosinski's novel "A Speck in The Sea" which will be developed into a film at The Weinstein Company. Jeff Pope will adapt the script while Rachael Horovitz, Jason Blum and Harvey Weinstein will produce.

Neil Burger ("Divergent," "The Illusionist") has signed on to direct a film adaptation of Olen Steinhauer's novel "All the Old Knives" at Chockstone Pictures.

The story follows two former lovers - Henry is a CIA agent posted in Vienna, and Celia who retired from the agency five years ago. The pair reunite for dinner in an idyllic town where talk turns towards an infamous plane hijacking which left all onboard dead and is considered the Vienna station's greatest failure to date.

As dinner progresses, it becomes clear one of them won't make it out alive. Steinhauer adapted the screenplay with Paula Mae Schwartz, Steve Schwartz and Nick Wechsler producing.

Yaron Zilberman, who marked his feature directorial debut with 2012′s A Late Quartet, is taking on literary hot-shot Orson Scott Card. Zilberman will write and direct a feature based on Card’s sci-fi short story Unaccompanied Sonata, EW has confirmed. The film will be called Sonata.

The property has been optioned by Nick Wechsler, Chockstone Pictures’ Steve and Paula Mae Schwartz, and Opening Night Productions. Tamar Sela will serve as executive producer with Roger Schwartz as co-producer.

The short story, which was originally published in 1979 in Omni magazine, tells the story of a child brought up to be a musical prodigy.

Yaron Zilberman ("A Late Quartet") is set to write and direct "Sonata," a film based on "Ender's Game" author Orson Scott Card‘s 1979 science-fiction short story "Unaccompanied Sonata".

The story follows a child who has been brought up to be a musical prodigy, and who is kept away from listening to other people's music to keep his creative expressions pure. Raised alone in a cabin by servants, he spends his days toiling on a complicated musical instrument.

Finally, he gains exposure to the works of Bach, and when discovered by a 'watcher,' the man is torn away from his lifelong composition and barred from making music ever again.

Card reportedly didn't plan to sell the rights to the film until he saw Zilberman's work with "A Late Quartet" and realised it could be translated to the screen after all. Zilberman, Nick Wechsler, Steve Schwartz and Paula Mae Schwartz will produce.

Breaking: Looks like it’s Warner Bros‘ week to hire directors. The studio has signed Rupert Sanders to direct Napoleon, a Scarface-style look at the French leader that will be produced by Gianni Nunari. Jeremy Doner wrote the script and Niija Kuykendall will oversee for the studio. This comes a day after the studio tapped Joe Wright to direct Pan. Sanders made his feature directing debut on Universal’s Snow White And The Huntsman, which grossed near $400 million worldwide. He’s got 90 Church with that studio and producer Joe Roth, and he’s developing Juliet for Sony and New Regency, with Charles Roven producing, as well as the screen adaptation of the Frederick Forsyth thriller The Kill List for producers Steve Schwartz, Paula Mae Schwartz and Nick Wechsler. Sanders is represented by CAA and attorney Carlos Goodman.

Last night we were in attendance at a rather special premiere – to mark the release of the forthcoming Ridley Scott thriller, The Counsellor. In a busy Leicester Square, we had the wonderful opportunity of speaking to some of the cast and crew, including lead stars Michael Fassbender and Penelope Cruz, as well as producers Nick Wechsler, Steve Schwartz and Paula Mae Schwartz.

The film, which is out in cinemas this coming November, also features the likes of Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem and Cameron Diaz. The screenplay was the first to come from renowned author Cormac McCarthy (The Road, No Country For Old Men) – and he was main focus of most of our conversations – which you can watch below.

Veteran screenwriter Lem Dobbs ("Dark City," "The Limey," "The Company You Keep") has been hired to pen the script for the film adaptation of Frederick Forsyth's latest thriller novel "The Kill List".

"Snow White and the Hunstman" director Rupert Sanders is still onboard to helm the project which Nick Wechsler, Steve Schwartz and Paula Mae Schwartz ("The Counselor") are set to produce.

The story follows a U.S. Special Forces agent tasked with tracking down a powerful terrorist in a high-stakes cat-and-mouse game.

Forsyth penned such legendary works as "The Day of the Jackal," "The Odessa File" and "The Dogs of War" which all saw film adaptations. 'Kill List' though would mark the first adaptation of a Forsyth novel since 1987's "The Fourth Protocol" starring Michael Caine and a young Pierce Brosnan.

Last month, producers Steve Schwartz, Paula Mae Schwartz, and Nick Wechsler pre-emptively acquired the rights to the as-yet-unpublished Frederick Forsyth espionage thriller The Kill List. Losing no time, they have already found a director to helm the project. Rupert Sanders, director of Snow White and the Huntsman, and an avowed fan of Forsyth’s books, has been brought on to direct the movie. Give those producers credit for wasting no time, as they just bought the book last month. After they acquired the Cormac McCarthy spec script The Counselor, they had that film in production in record time at Fox with Ridley Scott directing and a cast headed by Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem, Cameron Diaz and Penelope Cruz. Sanders, who made his feature directing debut on Huntsman, has always been a big fan of Forsyth’s espionage thrillers, and Kill List reminded him of this Hemingway line: “There is no hunting like the hunting of men, and those who have hunted armed men long enough and liked it, never care for anything else thereafter.

The story deals with an intricate chess game between a brilliant Marine, an Israeli agent, a teenage hacker and a mysterious psychopathic cleric.

Writers will be met with soon to package the movie ahead of it being sold to a studio.

The producing team are the same ones behind Ridley Scott's upcoming "The Counselor".
