When pitching a movie to Ridley Scott, you had better be quick about it. The 86-year-old has a lot on his plate, after all.
“I say, ‘Narrow it down to something very simple and brief — tell me the film in two sentences,’ ” says the renowned and prolific British director of such films as Blade Runner, Alien and Napoleon. “You should light the idea up, and within that you’ve got to have a fuse — a time bomb. When you just have [characters] doing something for something’s sake, that’s dangerous.”
A lit fuse could be, for instance, a group of young scavengers trapped on a derelict space station that’s going to crash into a planet’s rings in 36 hours — the plot of the summer hit Alien: Romulus, which was produced by Scott and his Scott Free production company and surprised the industry by earning $350 million globally.

Alien: Romulus Director Fede Álvarez In Talks To Helm Sequel; New Predator Movie Also In Development
Two classic sci-fi horror franchises were recently given new leases of life, with the Predator returning to hunt his Prey in Dan Trachtenberg's 2022 movie, and the Xenomorphs back to their chest-bursting best in this year's Alien: Romulus.
Both films were critically-acclaimed and very popular with audiences, so it shouldn't come as much of a surprise to learn that Disney-owned 20th Century Studios is planning more instalments.
We already knew that a Prey spin-off titled Badlands was in the works, but 20th Century Studios boss Steve Asbell has now revealed that a "secret" Predator movie will also be with us next year that will also be helmed by Trachtenberg. Badlands will be a theatrical release, but it sounds like this other film will be going straight to streaming.

Turns out, Pedro Pascal found filming “Gladiator II” to be quite the challenge at his age.
“The distinguishing and incomparable aspect of the whole experience would be getting my ass kicked by Paul Mescal,” he told Entertainment Weekly in an interview published Tuesday. “Elder abuse, we call it.”
“I’m getting up there — or, I’m not getting up there, I am up there,” the 49-year-old actor added. “A lot of work has been really physical, and I love that, but it was more challenging than it’s ever been for me.”
Pascal stars in the Ridley Scott-directed sequel as General Marcus Acacius, who trained under the original film’s Maximus Decimus Meridius. His co-star Mescal is Lucius Verus II, who finds out that he’s the son of Maximus (portrayed by Russell Crowe in the first movie) and not Lucius Verus I.
The stars became fast friends while filming the movie.

Fede Álvarez's franchise revival, Alien: Romulus, was a big hit at the box office, so we wouldn't be at all surprised if the Don't Breathe director was already in talks to helm a sequel.
If you happened to miss the movie on the big screen, Romulus is now available to purchase on Digital platforms, and Fandango has officially released an extended preview spotlighting what might be the most intense few minutes of the movie.
In the clip, we see Rain Carradine and her makeshift crew arrive at the seemingly abandoned and decommissioned Remus space station to salvage some fuel for their journey to a more hospitable planet.
Unfortunately, they soon find out that dozens of face-huggers were in the process of being transported in stasis, and are released when Andy tries to access the ship's computer.

Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II will start its Asian box office campaign in Japan. The Tokyo International Film Festival revealed Friday that it will host the Asian premiere of the epic sequel on Nov. 5 — more than two weeks ahead of its North American release over the Thanksgiving weekend on Nov. 22. The screening is a coup for Japan’s leading film festival, which used to regularly host Hollywood premieres but suffered a dry spell over the past decade as the studio’s shifted their marketing efforts towards China’s once-booming box office.
Scott won’t be in Japan to walk the festival’s red carpet, but the Gladiator II cast will be out in force for the Tokyo premiere. Star Paul Mescal is planning his very first visit to Japan to attend the gala screening. One of the most talked-about - not to mention divisive - elements of Fede Alvarez's Alien: Romulus was the introduction of another Xenomorph/human hybrid in the last act, and previously-released concept art has revealed that a number of different designs for the creature were considered.
Towards the end of the film, a pregnant and dying Kay (Isabela Merced) injects herself with the Rook android's Prometheus 5 formula to keep herself alive. Though she does survive (for a while), this ultimately results in her giving birth to a pretty damn terrifying hybrid, which kills its mother and very nearly manages to eliminate Rain (Cailee Spaeny) and Andy (David Jonsson) before being blasted into space.
Now, concept artist Dane Hallett has shared some more of his work to Instagram, and it seems the Offspring's original final form was going to look a lot more like a standard Xenomorph.

In addition to dropping the rap music, Paramount Pictures’ new trailer for Gladiator II drops a confirmation that Lucius’ father was Maximus. Of course, given that this is a sequel and that Maximus was killed in the original film, we won’t be seeing Russell Crowe involved in his son’s life in the gladiator arena.
The trailer shows off a CGI baboon and a flooded arena, and includes Lucius uttering Maximus’ famous line: “I will have my vengeance.”

Russell Crowe may not be in “Gladiator II,” but his late character Maximus has been revealed at last to be the father of Paul Mescal’s lead Lucius.
The latest trailer for Ridley Scott’s highly-anticipated epic sequel has confirmed that Crowe’s Maximus fathered Lucius with Lucilla (Connie Nielsen), as long suspected. Lucius is the nephew of Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) who was killed by Russell Crowe’s Maximus; the character is also the grandson of Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris). Maximus died in “Gladiator.”
Spencer Treat Clark played Lucius in the 2000 feature.

Prepare to be entertained, promises the new look at Ridley Scott’s much-anticipated follow-up, Gladiator II.
In a second epic trailer, Paul Mescal’s Lucius forms an uneasy alliance with Denzel Washington’s Macrinus, a Roman power player who uses the former’s fury as a tool for his own aims. “I will never be your instrument,” Lucius says in the new spot, teased yesterday, “but I will have my vengeance.”
The movie stars Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn and Connnie Nielsen, who reprises her role from the original pic.
The film’s first trailer, dropped in early July, became one of Paramount Pictures’ top performers, ahead of another hyped sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, racking up more than 180 million views in a little over 48 hours.
Gladiator II, which comes 24 years after the original starring Russell Crowe as a revenge-seeking general-turned-slave, will debut Nov. 22, a week ahead of Thanksgiving.

A new “Gladiator 2” trailer is here, offering a more extensive preview of Paramount’s epic sequel to the Best Picture-winning 2000 film.
Ridley Scott is back in the director’s chair for the aptly named “Gladiator II,” which finds Paul Mescal playing the grown son of Connie Nielsen’s character from the first film, Lucius. In an epic journey that mirrors the one Crowe’s Maximus went on in “Gladiator,” the sequel finds Mescal crossing paths with those who wronged him in the gladiatorial arena with an A-list ensemble that includes Pedro Pascal and Denzel Washington. “With rage in his heart and the future of the Empire at stake, Lucius must look to his past to find strength and honor to return the glory of Rome to its people,” the official synopsis states.

Fede Alvarez's Alien: Romulus contains quite a few call-backs to Ridley Scott's original masterpiece and James Cameron's sequel, but - somewhat controversially - it also reintroduces a concept from one of the less popular movies in the franchise, Alien: Resurrection.
Towards the end of the film, a pregnant and dying Kay (Isabela Merced) injects herself with the Rook android's Prometheus 5 formula to keep herself alive. Though she does survive (for a while), this ultimately results in her giving birth to a monstrous human/alien hybrid that kills its own mother almost immediately.
Named "The Offspring" in the credits, this rather terrifying creature does look a lot better than the albino monstrosity from Resurrection, but introducing another hybrid did result in some backlash, and for a lot of fans, the decision tarnished the movie’s final act.

Kristen Stewart announced at the beginning of 2024 that she was quitting acting until she got her long-gestated feature directorial debut The Chronology of Water over the line.
The actress and director has achieved her ambition with a first image released today showing her on the set directing Imogen Poots in the lead role.
The movie is adapted from Lidia Yuknavitch’s best-selling 2011 memoir of the same name, with Stewart taking screenplay co-writing credits with Andy Mingo.
A tale of turning trauma into art, the personal story follows protagonist Lidia from her earliest childhood memories in the Pacific Northwest, through explosive misfires and mistakes, children that almost-were, toxic relationships, art heroes, wins and losses.
Drifting in the water of Lidia’s memories, the film follows her journey to becoming a professional writer and repossessing her story by writing one she can live with. The film is billed as “an in-depth exploration of sexuality,...

Apple Original Films wants audiences to experience Ridley Scott’s Napoleon like never before with Napoleon: The Director’s Cut, now streaming on Apple TV+. The Director’s Cut includes 48 minutes of new, never-before-seen footage from Scott’s historical epic, which stars Joaquin Phoenix as the French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte.

Ridley Scott’s director’s cut of his 2023 historical epic Napoleon has landed on Apple TV+.
Apple Original Films has released a new version with 48 minutes of never-before-seen footage from the Oscar-nominated tentpole. Napoleon: The Director’s Cut stars Joaquin Phoenix as the French emperor and dives deeper into the origins and ascent of the military leader through the prism of his often volatile relationship with his wife, Josephine, played by Vanessa Kirby.
The director’s cut also focuses on Josephine’s own origin story with what Apple promises are more extravagant costumes, new larger-than-life sets and the previously unreleased Battle of Marengo scene. The original Napoleon film, with a screenplay by David Scarpa, spanned three decades of European history as the military commander triumphed in the Revolutionary Wars and rose to become Emperor of France in 1804, only to end his life in exile.

Anyone looking to pick a fight with Gladiator II‘s Pedro Pascal may want to think again, according to his co-star Paul Mescal, who speaks about the actor’s physical prowess in a new interview with Empire.
“I think I’d win in a fight between me and Pedro, but he’s deceptive,” said Mescal. “Pedro is one of the funniest men that I know, but he could f**k s**t up. Like, absolutely categorically. There’s a beast in there for sure.”
Mescal’s comments echo those of Pascal, who in an earlier interview with Vanity Fair, said he came to refer to his co-star as “Brick Wall Paul.”
“He got so strong,” recalled the actor. “I would rather be thrown from a building than have to fight him again. To go up against somebody that fit and that talented and that much younger….”

Alien: Romulus is set at some point in the 57-year gap between Ridley Scott's original and James Cameron's Aliens, which means Ellen Ripley was out there - somewhere!
The movie contains several call-backs to earlier films in the franchise, but aside from that quote towards the end, there didn't appear to be any direct references or nods to Sigourney Weaver's iconic heroine.
Or so we thought!
While chatting to the ReelBlend podcast, director Fede Álvarez revealed that there are “a few clues I’ve planted in the movie,” before adding that “it kind of defeats the whole purpose” if he points out exactly what they are.
There's been some speculation that Ripley's escape shuttle can be seen blasting away from the wreckage of the Nostromo at the beginning of the movie.
The filmmaker also suggests that there may have been early discussions about somehow working Ripley into the movie.

Though Alien: Romulus was met with a mostly positive response from critics and fans, one thing that has been met with almost universal backlash is the likeness of a deceased actor being used on a new character via VFX.
When Rain Carradine and her crew arrive on the derelict space station, they discover that the ship's android is still functional despite clearly being in very bad shape after a Xenomorph attack. They plug him in to discover what happened, and we see that the synthetic is the same model as Ash from Ridley Scott's original movie.
The late Ian Holm is "resurrected" for this new android via VFX, and director Fede Álvarez has now explained how this was achieved.

Alien: Romulus Ends Deadpool And Wolverine's 3-Week Run As Box Office No. 1 With $100M+ Global Debut
The Xenomorphs have put an end to Wade Wilson and Logan's three-week run as kings of the box office.
Disney/20th Century Studios' Alien: Romulus had an even stronger opening weekend than expected both domestically and overseas, and has knocked Marvel Studios' Deadpool and Wolverine off the top spot.
The Fede Alvarez-directed sci-fi horror flick took in $45.1 million (well ahead of a projected high-$20 million debut) in North America to give it the second-best opening of the franchise, not adjusted for inflation. Internationally, Romulus opened to $66.7 million for a worldwide start of $108.2 million.
This is a great start for the movie, which was originally slated to go direct to streaming on the Disney-owned Hulu before the (wise) decision was made to shift to theatrical at the start of principal photography.

Alien: Romulus is being praised by fans and critics alike, and assuming it performs well at the box office (which looks likely to be the case), we'd imagine a sequel will soon be a priority for the Disney-owned 20th Century Studios.
The studio previously rebooted the Predator franchise with Prey, a movie that found huge success on Hulu and will next head to theaters with both a sequel and spin-off titled Badlands (with the latter likely to star Elle Fanning).
Both franchises spent years languishing in mediocrity thanks to lousy reboots, sequels, prequels...and crossovers. Neither Alien vs. Predator movie was particularly good (despite being long-awaited by sci-fi fans) but could another eventually follow?
Talking to Deadline (via SFFGazette.com) to promote Alien: Romulus, filmmaker Fede Álvarez suggested he and Prey helmer Dan Trachtenberg may eventually team up to pit the Xenomorphs against the Yautja.

Alien: Romulus has slashed its way into theaters this weekend and, unsurprisingly, it's opened at #1 in North America. According to Deadline, current projections point to Fede Alvarez's reboot debuting with north of $40 million following a combined $18.5 million from Thursday previews/Friday.
The movie is already "Certified Fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes with 81% and has been awarded a B+ CinemaScore. Alien was released before CinemaScore's introduction but James Cameron's sequel, Aliens, has the franchise's best score with an A.
After that, there's Alien vs. Predator (B), Prometheus (B), Alien: Covenant (B), Alien Resurrection (B-), Alien3 (C), and Alien vs. Predator: Requiem (C).
A B+ puts Alien: Covenant right behind Aliens as the second-best-reviewed instalment, so that's a solid result.
Back to those box office takings, and Deadpool & Wolverine will slip to #2 with a projected $27 million - $29 million after a $8.5 million Friday. It Ends With Us is looking at third place with a $23 million haul.

When Rain Carradine and her crew arrive on the derelict space station, they discover that the ship's android is still functional despite clearly being in very bad shape after a Xenomorph attack. They plug him in to discover what happened, and we see that the synthetic (sorry... artificial person) is the same model as Ash from Ridley Scott's original movie.
Yes, the late Ian Holm is resurrected via CGI (AI?), and the results are just as ghastly and unconvincing as...

Alien: Romulus is now just mere hours away from playing in theaters nationwide. And, with it currently "Certified Fresh" at 82% on Rotten Tomatoes (making it the third best-reviewed instalment), excitement is at an all-time high among fans of the long-running sci-fi/horror franchise.
There's been a huge amount of speculation about whether this latest instalment ties into the wider Alien franchise, though it has largely been billed as a standalone story. Still, with the Disney-owned 20th Century Studios looking to restore the Xenomorphs to their former glory in theaters, we certainly don't anticipate this being a one-and-done (regardless of whether that takes the form of a direct sequel).
Before you rush to your local multiplex to watch this latest instalment to the series, we're sure you're all asking the same thing: does Alien: Romulus have a post-credits scene?
As we first reported on SFFGazette.com, no, Alien: Romulus does not feature any end,...

We haven't seen the dreaded creatures known as the Xenomorph(s) since Ridley Scott's highly divisive Alien: Covenant in 2017, but the acid-blooded beasties make their long-awaited return to the big screen in Fede Alvarez's Alien: Romulus this Friday.
Though some dedicated fans of the long-running franchise believe "there are no bad Alien movies," it's hard to argue with the perception that none of them have come close to Scott's original masterpiece or James Cameron's more action-heavy sequel. A tall task, no doubt, but Alvarez does succeed in recapturing the claustrophobic chills and visceral terror of those first two films - even if he overindulges in nostalgia while he's at it.
Set at some point in the 57-year gap between the events of Alien and Aliens, Romulus focuses on a young orphaned space colonizer named Rain Carradine (Cailee Spaeny) and her android brother Andy (David Jonsson) eking out...

Alien: Romulus bursts into theaters this Friday, and following (mostly) positive social media reactions, the full review embargo lifted earlier today.
Though there are a few negative verdicts, the majority of critics were very impressed with Fede Alvarez's revival, which is being hailed as a return to form for the long-running franchise after several disappointing/divisive instalments.
With 95 reviews counted so far, Romulus is now Certified Fresh at 80% on Rotten Tomatoes.
"Honoring its nightmarish predecessors while chestbursting at the seams with new frights of its own, Romulus injects some fresh acid blood into one of cinema's great horror franchises," reads the critics consensus.

Fede Álvarez’s hotly anticipated Alien: Romulus was finally revealed to the public Monday night after the 20th Century Studios film held its world premiere in Los Angeles, and the first reactions have already hit social media.
The eighth installment in the long-running Alien franchise is set between the events of Ridley Scott’s 1979 Alien and James Cameron’s 1986 sequel Aliens. Romulus follows young colonists who come across a derelict space station and encounter the horror of the alien creature that is the enduring star of the franchise. The film stars Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced and Spike Fearn.
The film is produced by Scott, Michael Pruss and Walter Hill.
Romulus was originally slated to be a Hulu release à la Dan Trachtenberg’s critically acclaimed Predator prequel, Prey (2022), but the studio wisely shifted to theatrical at the start of principal photography. “Right when we started shooting it,...

The first social media reactions to Fede Alvarez's Alien: Romulus are in (via SFFGazette.com) following last night's early screening, and the movie is being hailed as "among the very best" of the franchise (one post actually claims that it is the best).
These initial reactions are almost always at least somewhat hyperbolic, and while we're sure Romulus is very good/great, are we really supposed to believe that it's better or even as good as Ridley Scott's masterpiece or James Cameron's sequel?
At any rate, it does sound like the movie has managed to recapture some of the sustained dread and pervasive atmosphere of the original Alien, and several posts mention an insane final act.
Have a read through the reactions below, and check out a new teaser.

Alien: Romulus will finally take the long-running sci-fi franchise back to its horror roots, and the first clip from the movie is most definitely not for the faint of heart.
In the sneak peek, we watch Isabela Merced's (Superman) Kay attempt to elude a pursuing Xenomorph. She needs to keep quiet and stay calm, something we'd argue is easier said than done given the terrifying creature on the loose and out for her blood.
Speaking of the titular alien, we also have a new look at the iconic creature courtesy of a new magazine cover. With just a couple of weeks until Alien: Romulus is released in theaters, this is no doubt the first of many new looks we'll be getting from 20th Century Studios.
"When we were doing reshoots, Fede Álvarez gave me the iPad where he watches playback, and he had the movie pulled up," Merced said in a recent interview.

Alien: Romulus is now just over two weeks away from arriving in theaters and a terrifying new sneak peek has been unleashed by 20th Century Studios. We also have more than half a dozen exclusive exhibitor/ticketing partner posters and these are among the best we've seen this year!
Talking to Deadline (via SFFGazette.com) at the San Diego Comic-Con this past weekend, director Fede Álvarez revealed whether this movie will link up with Noah Hawley's upcoming Alien: Earth FX TV series.
"They were doing the show already when we started writing, and there’s such different timelines that there was no way to connect them, even if you wanted," the filmmaker explained. "This is such a standalone story that happened so much later than their story, as far as I know,” he said. “I don’t know all the details of the show, but I can’t wait to watch it.

With all the excitement coming out of Comic-Con for Fede Alvarez’s Alien: Romulus panel, fans can tell the filmmaker gets it. For those of us who saw Alien and Aliens in the cinema opening night in 1979 and 1986, along with the screams and cheers from the audience, he knows what a Alien movie should be! He’s sticking with canon and it’s going to be vicious fun.
With an energetic enthusiasm for the franchise, Alvarez decided to go back to the basics when shooting the film. “I knew that I wanted to take this chapter back to the beginning, not only story-wise but in terms of visual style,” explains Alvarez. “I wanted to keep it simple and focus on a few characters you could get to know and love.”
