“The Piano Lesson” is the latest in a string of recent adaptations of August Wilson’s 10-play American Century Cycle, after 2016’s “Fences” and 2020’s “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” Denzel Washington starred in and directed the former and he produces his son Malcolm Washington’s feature directorial debut here. Denzel’s other son (Malcolm’s brother) John David Washington stars in the ensemble piece, Malcolm’s older sister Katia Washington executive produces, and rounding out the firmly family affair, the film is dedicated to Washington family matriarch, actress Pauletta Washington, with a “for mama” on screen dedication.
“The Piano Lesson” opens in 1911 Mississippi, as Fourth of July fireworks bathe a wordless heist in red and blue flashes. A group of unnamed Black men break into an empty house to steal a piano. Early the next morning, some white men on horses burn a remote cottage down in retribution, but the thieves escape.

Right up there with Marty Stuart, Chuck Mead is one of the torchbearers of neo-traditional country music, that punky, jangly, and twangy sound that helped revitalize Nashville in the Nineties. Earlier this year, Mead and Stuart came together to write “Lonely Boy,” Mead’s latest single with his band the Stalwarts. A new video directed by Stacie Huckeba for the supercharged guitar-rocker, which Mead describes as “the Who on hay bales,” dropped on Friday.

The Justice League. The Teen Titans. Heck, even the Outsiders. Most comic readers know these superhero teams from DC Comics, and can probably name at least a few key members, if not favorite stories.
But for a while in the 1980s, one team topped them all, rivaling even Chris Claremont’s X-Men run for comic shop supremacy: Legion of Super-Heroes won over readers with its futuristic space opera and its cast of unique characters.
The basic premise of the Legion of Super-Heroes is simple. 1000 years in the future, a group of superpowered teens take inspiration from Superboy and become heroes, most using powers they gained from their native planets. Like the best Superman stories, Legion tales tend to be optimistic and hopeful, certain that humanity can overcome its problems and work toward a better tomorrow.

Soldier Boy became a fan-favorite character ever since he first opened his mouth in the third season. Even though he was only around for one season, the performance that Jensen Ackles gave made him the spotlight of every scene that he was in. With how quickly he became a beloved character, it is safe to say that fans were excited when it was teased that he would be coming back in the final season of the series.
Jensen Ackles’ Soldier Boy brought in some gritty action in season 3 of The Boys | Prime Video
The character did not leave on a good note, to say the least. He was betrayed by the Boys, and his own son was trying to kill him. He had no allies, and that ended up taking him down, literally. With this in mind, many have been curious about where his story is going to go in the final season,...

Fans of "The Boys" should prepare to see a lot more of Captain America-parody Soldier Boy (played by Jensen Ackles) in the near future. Ackles is not only starring as Soldier Boy in a prequel spin-off, "Vought Rising," he's also set to be a series regular for the fifth and final season of "The Boys."
Soldier Boy was introduced in season 3 of the hit superhero satire series. Once the leader of America's greatest superhero team, Payback, his teammates tired of his abusive behavior in 1984 and backstabbed him, handing him over to Ussr scientists for (super)human experiments. The Boys found Soldier Boy in cold storage and awakened him; the experiments gave him the ability to fire blasts of radiation that removed supes' powers.
So, Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) and Hughie (Jack Quaid) made a deal with Soldier Boy; if they helped him get revenge on his former teammates, he'd help...

Black Water Pictures is thrilled to announce that their latest horror comedy, Members Club, will have its world premiere at this year’s Pigeon Shrine FrightFest on 24th August. This highly anticipated film, written and directed by Marc Coleman, is a wild fusion of The Full Monty and From Dusk Till Dawn, promising a unique blend of laughs and scares. It will certainly bring a bit of light relief to the otherwise rather dark and gruesome festival.
Members Club stars an impressive, extensive list of British talent including Dean Kilbey, Top Boy), Perry Benson, Barbara Smith, Juliet Cowan, Mark Monero, Steve Oram, David Schaal, Alan Ford, Liam Noble, and Peter Andre.
The film follows Wet Dreams, a down-and-out middle-aged male stripper group, as they grapple with a series of disastrous gigs and contemplate disbanding. Alan, the group’s optimistic frontman, seizes control and secures a seemingly lucrative gig in rural Essex.

Gen V will take fans of The Boys to a superhero university when it hits the air on Friday, September 29, 2023.
Prime Video shared character descriptions this week so that we can get intel on who we'll be rooting for/against.
If the original series has taught us anything, there will be plenty of polarizing characters.
Will the same ring true for Gen V? We think so.
The series is headlined by Jaz Sinclair, who plays Marie Moreau, an 18-year-old superhero with the ability to control and weaponize her own blood.
As an incoming freshman at Vought-run Godolkin University, she is eager to prove she has what it takes to join The Seven but is sidetracked by a mystery she begins to unravel at the school.

Exclusive: WME has signed filmmaker Mark Jenkin (Enys Men) for representation in all areas.
A true multi-hyphenate, who has worked as a director, editor, screenwriter, cinematographer and composer over the course of his career, Jenkin most recently wrote and directed the folk horror film Enys Men, which was picked up for distribution in North America by Neon following its Cannes Directors’ Fortnight world premiere.
Starring Mary Woodvine, Edward Rowe, Flo Crowe and John Woodvine, the experimental feature shot on 16mm follows a wildlife volunteer living on an otherwise uninhabited island off the Cornish coast in 1973, as her daily observations of a rare flower turn into a metaphysical journey that forces her as well as the viewer to question what is real and what is nightmare.
Jenkin previously broke out with his debut feature Bait, which won the BAFTA Award for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director, or Producer in...

Rod Stewart is trading rock ‘n’ roll for swing music after completing his extensive 2023 tour, he said in a recent interview with BBC Breakfast. Watch the clip below.
“I’m not retiring,” Stewart said to BBC host Charlie Stayt. “I’ve just done a swing album with Jools Holland, which is going to come out next year, so I want to go in that direction. I just want to leave all the rock ‘n’ roll stuff behind — for a while, maybe.”
Stewart, while sitting next to upcoming tourmate Boy George, expressed excitement and anticipation for the career pivot, adding that he’s “really looking forward to doing something else” and how his forthcoming work with Jools Holland’s band “borders on rock ‘n’ roll anyway, it’s just not ‘Maggie May’ and ‘Do Ya Think I’m Sexy?'”
It’s not the first time Stewart has mentioned a desire for genre change.

Snoop Dogg is standing in solidarity with Hollywood writers who are demanding better pay and contracts for their work.
On Saturday, the rapper showed his support by sharing footage from a protest that took place in Los Angeles on Friday, uploading photos and videos from the rally.
“Got 2 support !!” Snoop captioned a post, which included images of Death Row Records pioneer, K Dubb, and Los Angeles based hip-hop radio host, Big Boy. While it’s unclear whether or not Snoop was in attendance, it appears he and fellow rapper Dr. Dre contributed to the protest by sponsoring food like wings, waffles and bagels for protesters, as seen below in photos of signage from the event.

Andy Rourke, the bass player for the Smiths, died today of pancreatic cancer at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. He was 59.
His death was announced by his former bandmate, the Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr, who said in a statment on social media, “Andy will be remembered as a kind and beautiful soul and as a supremely gifted musician.”
The moody band from Manchester, England, whose jangly guitar sound, steady post-punk rhythms and mordantly humorous lyrics sung in a dark-of-night baritone by frontman Morrissey, was one of the most influential rock bands of the 1980s, scoring multiple hit records in the UK and becoming a mainstay in the U.S. of what was then the fledgling college radio circuit.
Rourke was a member of the band throughout its relatively short run of 1983-87, and added his melodic bass playing to all four of the band’s studio albums:...

From producers Sam Raimi (Evil Dead, Drag Me to Hell, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) and Roy Lee (It, Doctor Sleep, Don’t Worry Darling) comes the upcoming action-thriller Boy Kills World. The film is said to be a “one-of-a-kind action spectacle set in a dystopian fever dream reality,” and it’s definitely releasing with a hard “R” rating.
Boy Kills World has been Rated “R” by the MPA this week for, “Strong bloody violence and gore throughout, language, some drug use and sexual references.”
Stay tuned for the official trailer, which is likely coming soon.
In Boy Kills World, “Boy (Bill Skarsgård) is a deaf-mute with a vibrant imagination. When his family is murdered, Boy escapes to the jungle and is trained by a mysterious shaman to repress his childish imagination and become an instrument of death.”

We’re waiting to hear news of a release date for director Moritz Mohr’s dystopian action thriller Boy Kills World, which stars Bill Skarsgard (It) and Jessica Rothe (Happy Death Day)… and it looks like that news might not be too far off at this point. It seems to be near because the movie has just secured its rating from the Motion Picture Association, and it’s a rating that makes the movie sound quite promising to me. Boy Kills World has been rated R for strong bloody violence and gore throughout, language, some drug use and sexual references.
“Strong bloody violence and gore throughout”? Yes, please!
Produced by the legendary Sam Raimi, Boy Kills World was scripted by Arend Remmers (Sløborn) and Tyler Burton Smith (Kung Fury: The Movie). The story takes place in a bizarre, dark dystopian universe and centers on a deaf and mute character, Boy...

The connection between the Oath Keepers militia and the Proud Boys has been a subject of fascination for anyone trying to puzzle together the events of Jan. 6, 2021. The two far-right groups were instrumental in storming the Capitol. Their leaders were both hit with seditious conspiracy charges. But were they actively working together? After all, the two groups were infamously caught on film in a surreptitious Jan. 5 meeting in an underground hotel parking garage in Washington D.C.

The actor: Actors have types, and Chris O’Dowd is no exception. And given his Irish sense of humor and the self-awareness required of regular A.V. Club interviewees, he has no issue poking fun at his own roles, from “big, slow guy” to “sitcom dad.” But like the most exciting actors working today,...
