When brothers in a rural Argentinian town discover a possessed man, they decide to move him away with the help of some townspeople in the hopes of saving the town from being “infected”. What follows is the consequence of their arrogance, which may lead to the birth of true evil. When Evil Lurks is a Spanish-language Argentinian film directed by Demian Rugna (Terrified), starring Ezequiel Rodríguez and Demián Salomón in lead roles. I’d say that as a horror enthusiast, I’ve seen quite a few questionable films in my time, but this one has to take the cake for the most anxiety-inducing one. I could say this film is deliciously evil, at least for those who like to dabble in the world of horror, but it would be a disservice to how grotesque the whole thing is. When Evil Lurks is unlike anything I’ve seen before. It’s...

We probably won’t see this week’s streaming debuts on the Oscars’ nomination roster come January, but they offer a variety of genres that will satisfy whatever mood you find yourself in this weekend.
The contender to watch this week: “Pain Hustlers“
The opioid epidemic has fueled a wave of movie and TV shows in the last few years, from “Dopesick” and “Ben Is Back” to the gorgeous Oscar-nominated documentary “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed.” Hollywood’s latest Big Pharma indictment is a star-studded dramedy directed by “Harry Potter” alum David Yates. Based on a book by journalist Evan Hughes, “Pain Hustlers” features Emily Blunt, Chris Evans, Catherine O’Hara, and Andy Garcia in a crime saga revolving around a pharmaceutical start-up whose founder served two years in prison. Reviews have been tepid, but “Hustlers” is now streaming on Netflix following a limited theatrical release.

To describe When Evil Lurks as a horror film about demonic possession is to conjure images of projectile vomiting, spinning heads, tortured priests spraying profanity-spewing children with holy water, and, well, the Conjuring franchise. But Argentine writer-director Demián Rugna’s harrowing film isn’t interested in those things.
The distinction becomes quickly apparent when our protagonists, adult brothers Pedro (Ezequiel Rodríguez) and Jaime (Demián Salomon), encounter the possessed Uriel, the eldest son of an impoverished old woman (Isabel Quinteros) living on remote farmland. Uriel has become a “rotten,” a human incubator for a demon. His body has swollen to an immense size, covered in tumorous, oozing growths and incapable of being moved by a single person.
Here, possession functions like a disease that infests its surroundings. There are procedures to follow and even bureaucratic processes that are meant to respond to the disease’s spread, but there’s only a...

Terrified director Demian Rugna‘s new horror film When Evil Lurks just received a theatrical release from IFC Films on October 6th, and will heading over to the Shudder streaming service on October 27th. One person who highly recommends that you check it out either on the big screen or at home is Sinister and Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson, who just named When Evil Lurks as one of his top two favorite movies of the year during an interview on the The Discourse podcast.
Derrickson said (as reported by The Playlist), “I think Barbie is the best film I’ve seen this year—well, maybe that’s not true; I saw this horror film, When Evil Lurks at Fantastic Fest, but Barbie and When Evil Lurks those are my two favorite films of the year, which couldn’t be further away from each other.” Derrickson went on to talk...

A hundred years ago, if you had said to the average educated person that humans could easily go extinct within a few generations, they would have looked at you as if you needed to see a doctor. Today, doctors are amongst those stating it as fact. Along with adapting to that, we have needed to adapt to the potential for such paradigm shifts. Fiction writers wishing to explore existential threat have had to become a lot bolder in response to this. Demián Rugna’s latest film does not shirk this duty. It’s the end of the world, our protagonists are reminded at the start. The implication is that hey should stop complaining. The things they have witnessed don’t make them special.
That’s as may be, but nobody fully accepts disaster on such a scale until it’s on their doorstep. For the brothers, Pedro (Ezequiel Rodríguez) and Jimmy (Demián Salomón), the first.

When Evil Lurks, written and directed by Demián Rugna, is a no-holds-barred demon-slaying nightmare of blood and guts and unstoppable evil. Set in a world where demonic possession has become as commonplace as a zombie outbreak in post-apocalyptic Texas, the story follows a series of family under attack by a diabolic force of death and destruction.
Brothers Pedro (Ezequiel Rodríguez) and Jimmy’s (Demián Salomón) world is flip-turned upside-down when they discover a possessed man in a farmhouse next door to their property. This poor unfortunate soul has been in the grips of a demon for so long that his body has begun to rot and swell in a delectably disgusting fashion. It’s a real “My 666 Lb Life” scenario and just looking at his rotting bloat is enough to make you throw up in your mouth a little bit. As this man’s body dies, the demon’s powers grow stronger,...

"We have to find the beast before more are born." Several years after bringing visceral nightmares to life onscreen in Terrified (aka Aterrados), Demián Rugna is introducing viewers to "a horror you can't unsee" in the official trailer for his new movie When Evil Lurks, coming to theaters on October 6th via IFC Films ahead of its October 20th streaming debut on Shudder.
Synopsis: When brothers Pedro (Ezequiel Rodríguez) and Jimmy (Demián Salomón) discover that a demonic infection has been festering in a nearby farmhouse — its very proximity poisoning the local livestock — they attempt to evict the victim from their land. Failing to adhere to the proper rites of exorcism, their reckless actions inadvertently trigger an epidemic of possessions across their rural community. Now they must outrun an encroaching evil as it corrupts and mutilates everyone it is exposed to, and enlist the aid of a wizened “cleaner,” who holds...

Terrified director Demian Rugna‘s new horror film When Evil Lurks drew comparisons to John Carpenter’s Apocalypse Trilogy and Lucio Fulci’s City of the Living Dead when it was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival – which are some excellent movies to be compared to. A wider audience will get the chance to see When Evil Lurks when IFC Films gives it a theatrical release on October 6th, putting it in direct competition with the Universal Pictures release of The Exorcist: Believer. Three weeks later, on October 27th, the film will also be available to watch on the Shudder streaming service.
According to Variety, When Evil Lurks deals with “timeless horror concepts” while “adding contemporary twists”. Scripted by Rugna, the story plays out in a remote village where two brothers find a demon-infected man just about to give birth to evil itself. In a time when exorcism looks...

Disease has always been fertile ground for the horror genre: what’s a zombie or vampire movie if not the story of a particularly nasty virus making its way from host to host? Demonic possession onscreen often has a similar subtext; look at the definitive example, 1973’s “The Exorcist,” where hosting an ancient evil leaves a little girl bedridden, covered in sores, and vomiting her stomach out.
“When Evil Lurks,” from Argentinian director Demián Rugna, takes the virus imagery and symbolism and runs with it as the central conceit, placing the audience in a tiny community that goes through, essentially, a rapidly escalating epidemic of demonic possession. An improperly disposed patient zero introduces...

Writer/Director Demián Rugna broke onto the horror scene with 2017’s aptly titled Terrified (Aterrados), a paranormal tour de force of shocking imagery and genuine scares. Rugna continues that streak with his latest, When Evil Looks, including the central theme of infectious evil. This time, however, the Argentinian filmmaker shifts gears to take on possession horror unafraid to spill buckets of blood and jaw-dropping violence.
The possession horror feature flips the script by starting with an exorcism rather than building up to one. More accurately, the gnarly reign of terror begins with a botched exorcism. Brothers Pedro (Ezequiel Rodríguez) and Jimmy (Demián Salomón) discover something’s deeply wrong with the livestock in their local, rural community and trace it back to a nearby farm, where a man is grotesquely bloated by sickness and evil. The brothers decide to take on cleansing the home of its foul demonic presence themselves but...

Future horror anthology producers and filmmakers can learn from the smooth-as-silk collection "Satanic Hispanics." Most importantly? Don't undervalue your wraparound that binds segments together like storytelling glue. Anthologies are, by definition, multiple shorts assembled to feature length via chapters, but what separates a "Deathcember" that's too oddly randomized from something like "Satanic Hispanics" is wraparound consistency. Everyone involved harmoniously feeds off the prompt's cultural emphasis instead of ping-ponging viewers around some production company's amalgamation of dusty shorts with the intent to cash in on anthology redistribution. "Satanic Hispanics" isn't just another assortment of kill sequences with an overall thematic impact — it's a model to follow and a path toward horror anthology success.
What proceeds is an ode to horrific Hispanic heritage from indie horror directors who allow their traditions, nightmares, and ancestors to haunt universal audiences. You've seen their works from "Juan of the Dead" to "Culture Shock," "Big Ass...

Satanic Hispanics opens with a police raid that finds a building containing twenty-seven dead bodies, four of them children. All Hispanic, all shot in the head and none with any identification. There is one survivor, a handcuffed man who tried to hack off his hand in order to escape.
