The Southampton Playhouse, a 1932 movie theater complex and fixture of Hamptons summers, is getting a significant makeover led by real estate billionaire Aby Rosen and his son, Charlie.
The duo are heading a group that is modernizing the Hill Street site, which will be run by a new not-for-profit organization and resume its year-round mission of serving moviegoers. A 161-seat Imax auditorium will be added to the mix – the only Imax screen within 40 miles – and programming will range from broad Hollywood titles to specialty films.
Barring any setbacks with construction, an opening is planned in the first quarter of 2025, with full operation targeted for next summer.
The geography of the Hamptons, a region on the East End of Long Island about 100 miles east of New York City, adds extra potency to the theatrical film experience. That became particularly evident during Covid, which shuttered theaters across New York state for nearly a year.

When it comes to meta experiments that blur those good ole lines between fiction and the filmmakers’ own non-fiction life stories, there’s a risk that the resulting feature can border on being impenetrable if audiences aren’t fed a load of exposition in advance. That’s far less of an issue for classically-told narratives from mega-famous artists delving into (semi)autobiography (like Steven Spielberg with “The Fabelmans”), but definitely so for smaller scale projects from independent filmmakers whose output is more peculiar. What can be a compelling behind-the-scenes story as described in a press kit may not necessarily translate into the finished feature as something engaging, or even coherent, to anyone coming to the work without the luxury of reading production notes before the screening.

The time has come to acknowledge Dan Stevens for the scream king that he is. This year alone, his genre credits include Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Abigail, and director Tilman Singer’s new film Cuckoo, where he plays a mysterious and undeniably villainous resort owner named Herr König. In the same way that scream queens have helped shape and define the fabric of horror and its feminine roles, recurring scream kings like Stevens have similarly influenced the spectrum of masculinity represented in the genre.
After shocking Downton Abbey fans when he turned in his resignation nearly 12 years ago, it was unclear what Stevens’ career future would look like. Thankfully for us horror fans, his desire for diverse creative experiences quickly drew him towards genre fare. With his disarming good looks and willingness to get weird, wild, and downright drenched in blood, Stevens brings a palpable enthusiasm to every project he touches.

Disney updated its slate of Marvel movies yesterday evening, removing a previously scheduled July 24, 2026 movie so that year will see the release of only three MCU titles.
We know Avengers: Doomsday is coming on May 1, 2026, while it seems highly likely that Blade will be pushed to February 13, 2026. As for that November 6, 2026 slot, it remains a mystery to us.
As you might expect, there are a lot of questions about what all this means for Spider-Man 4. It's already been close to three years since Spider-Man: No Way Home swung to a record-breaking $1.9 billion and, based on past reports, Sony Pictures needs to start production on that fourth instalment by next September to retain the franchise's rights.
As Spider-Man 4 isn't technically a Marvel Studios movie, then it could quite easily still be released next year. In fact, Disney may have gifted that July 24 slot to Sony Pictures because it's typically...

Spider-man 4: Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige Reveals Whether Jon Watts Will Return As Director
Jon Watts was only really known for directing Clown and Cop Car when Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures hired him to helm Spider-Man: Homecoming. Understandably, many fans had reservations about another "indie" director working on the franchise, particularly after Marc Webb had struggled with The Amazing Spider-Man franchise.
Fortunately, the filmmaker exceeded expectations and delivered three huge critical and commercial hits. After successfully getting Spider-Man: No Way Home across the finish line in 2021 (no easy feat given its scale and the pandemic), Watts was expected to begin work on Marvel Studios’ Fantastic Four reboot. Instead, he chose to leave the movie after devoting a good half a decade of his career to the MCU.
The fact Watts agreed to take charge of that movie seemed to suggest he never planned to return for Spider-Man 4, and several names have since been rumoured to be in the running for the coveted job.

What’s Dan Stevens up to after starring in his friend Adam Wingard‘s MonsterVerse sequel “Godzilla x King: The New Empire“? Deadline reports it’ll be another genre project, like “Abigail” and the upcoming “Cuckoo,” but this one is on TV. Children can be such monsters, but none quite like Abigail. When you sink your fangs into the horror-comedy on home video, you can enjoy an audio commentary by directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett and editor Michael P. Shawyer.
Here are seven things I learned from the Abigail commentary…
1. Abigail’s father is revealed early in the film.
Matthew Goode as Abigail’s vampiric crime lord father, Kristof Lazaar, is treated as a reveal in the final act, but Eagle-eyed viewers will notice a framed picture of him on a nightstand in Abigail’s bedroom.
The filmmakers point out that Abigail’s other nightstand features photos of Bettinelli-Olpin’s cats and Gillett’s dog.
2. 10 minutes were cut after a preview screening.
Feedback after Abigail‘s first preview screening resulted in 10 minutes being cut to tighten the pacing, which the filmmakers concede was a good note. Among the changes, two...

When we think about legendary Scream Queens from the world of horror, it’s usually iconic final girls or empowered assassins who jump to mind – women like Jamie Lee Curtis and Sarah Michelle Gellar most associated with an iconic role despite a multitude of successful genre titles in their extensive catalog. While these beloved actresses will always be part of the horror landscape, newer Scream Queens have begun to diversify. Anya Taylor-Joy and Mia Goth have both broken their horror bones in a variety of outstanding genre films and continue to surprise us with unexpected roles. But of the many young actresses vying for Modern Scream Queen status, one woman rises to the top of the list.

Filmmaker Joe Swanberg was a major figure in the mumblecore film movement, and as the years have gone by he has also earned several credits in the horror genre, whether by taking acting roles in films like A Horrible Way to Die, You’re Next, The Sacrament, and Blackout, or by directing the werewolf movie Silver Bullets and contributing a segment to the anthology film V/H/S. Now Swanberg has increased his number of horror credits by five, as Deadline reports that he has teamed with Jordan Yale Levine and Jordan Beckerman of Yale Entertainment to produce a slate of five horror films – all of which have already wrapped filming! Four of the titles are Helldorado, Kenneled, Yellow Eyes, and Monkey’s Magic Merry Go Round. The fifth movie is currently simply known as the Untitled Jae Matthews Project.

Funny Story has become the latest Emily Henry novel to get a feature film adaptation deal, and the author herself will adapt the book for the big screen.
Henry will write the script of her latest novel, which was published April 23 by Public Random House. Funny Story marks Henry’s fifth romantic comedy book in four years.
The story follows children’s librarian Daphne, who has just been broken up with by her fiancé Peter, who quickly moved on to his childhood best friend, Petra. Forced out of their living situation, Daphne takes up residence with Miles, Petra’s ex-boyfriend. The pair hatch a fake dating scheme to make their exes jealous at the wedding, but as with the popular trope, the pair’s shared desire for revenge could spark a whole new flame.

With Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire sitting pretty as the highest-grossing movie in the MonsterVerse, it’s no surprise that another installment is on the way. Today, Warner Bros. announced the official release date for the next MonsterVerse movie, which will be smashing into theaters on March 26, 2027.
After helming Godzilla v Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Adam Wingard was expected to return for more. The studio was keen to have him back, but scheduling issues meant that he had to step down. It was announced earlier this month that Grant Sputore, the director of Hilary Swank’s sci-fi thriller I Am Mother, would be replacing him. The studio had previously tapped Dave Callaham (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) to write the script for the Godzilla x Kong sequel.

Denis Villeneuve’s next feature is getting a holiday release, though it’s uncertain what that project will ultimately be.
Warner Bros. announced Friday that the filmmaker’s next “event film” will hit theaters Dec. 18, 2026, and that it hails from Legendary Entertainment, home to his Dune movies.
Plot details have not yet been shared, but Villeneuve, who most recently helmed Dune: Part Two, previously stated that a third Dune movie would likely not be his next film. He does have a nuclear war film set up at Legendary, but sources say that Villeneuve may have had a change of heart and could be turning his attention back to Dune. Legendary could not be reached for comment.

Warner Bros. has announced a slew of changes to their release schedule, most notably slotting an untitled event film from Legendary and “Dune” director Denis Villeneuve for Dec. 18, 2026 in IMAX.
Following the massive success of “Dune: Part Two,” Villeneuve entered into talks with Legendary for an adaptation of Annie Jacobsen’s Pulitzer Prize finalist “Nuclear War: A Scenario.” It’s not yet clear if that project will land in this new release slot.
Jacobsen’s book “explores a ticking-clock scenario about what would happen in the event of a nuclear war, based on dozens of exclusive new interviews with military and civilian experts who built the weapons and have been privy to the response plans and have been responsible for those decisions should they have needed to be made.”

As far as we're aware, Marvel Studios still hasn't found a director for Spider-Man 4. It's looking increasingly unlikely that the movie will be released next year and, even with Kevin Feige heading to Hall H, an update in San Diego is doubtful because Sony Pictures controls the franchise.
There continue to be conflicting rumours about what we'll see in the movie, with Black Cat, Scorpion, Venom, and even The Kingpin all mentioned in recent months.

The scooper later claimed that Tthe McU's Kingpin "hates [Spider-Man and Daredevil] equally" and confirmed Mayor Wilson Fisk has a physical presence in the movie. Remember, it's previously been reported that Spidey and the Man Without Fear will team up to battle the...

More Godzilla and King Kong are coming to Max. “Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire” will be available to stream from home on Max starting July 4. The film was a box office hit earlier this year with $196 million at the domestic box office and $567 million worldwide.
Following the events of 2021’s “Godzilla vs. Kong,” the new film finds the two iconic monsters putting aside their differences and living peacefully — with King Kong residing in the Hollow Earth alone and Godzilla fighting destructive monsters and napping in Rome’s Colosseum. However, that balance is disrupted when Kong, longing for fellow gigantic friends, discovers a violent clan of massive apes hiding out in Hollow Earth. Led by the ruthless Scar King, the apes attack Earth, and the only creatures who can stop them are Godzilla and Kong.

A24, the Oscar-winning indie studio that has become an edgy brand name unto itself, is getting a big vote of confidence — and an influx of cash.
The studio said Wednesday it has closed on an investment round led by Joshua Kushner’s Thrive Capital. The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Thrive invested $75 million into the indie studio based on a $3.25 billion pre-money valuation. A source close to A24 with knowledge of the investment notes that the company’s enterprise valuation now sits at $3.5 billion, suggesting this round of funding will net the company a roughly $250 million total investment.
As a part of the investment, Thrive founder Kushner will join the A24 board of directors.
The news of the A24’s new valuation and Thrive’s investment comes as the studio pushed into more commercial projects, with bigger budgets and A-list talent. There was a period, not too long ago, when...

Adam Wingard returns to the director’s chair to deliver a second helping of the mother of all monster battles, following his superlative work on 2021’s Godzilla Vs Kong. The fifth film in Warner Bros’ MonsterVerse series, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire sees Kong and Godzilla teaming up to take on a new pair of adversaries, but not without punching each other a bit first. Got to give the fans what they want, after all.
The plot picks up a couple of years after the events of the previous film, with Kong now settled into his new home in Hollow Earth and Godzilla taking down Titans on the surface world, in between power naps in the Colosseum. However, when Dr Ilene Andrews’ (Rebecca...

Venom: Let There Be Carnage's post-credits scene promised us a clash between Tom Hardy's Eddie Brock and Tom Holland's Peter Parker, only for that to come to nothing when Spider-Man: No Way Home rolled around.
In that movie's stinger, Eddie and Venom - who never left Mexico - were sent back to their reality, but only after leaving a piece of the Symbiote behind.
Venom: The Last Dance's trailer seemed to suggest the moment is being retconned, though we know many of you argued that the scene in question likely takes place back on Eddie's Earth (with that piece of the Symbiote playing a key role elsewhere in the threequel).
As for what all this may mean for Spider-Man 4, scooper Daniel Richtman believes the Venom: The Last Dance trailer was likely a misdirect and, as of now, the plan is for the Venom Symbiote to appear in the movie.

“ThunderCats”, the 1985 cartoon series will be adapted into a live-action sword ‘n sorcery feature, to be directed by Adam Wingard (“Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire”):
“…’ThunderCats’ follows the adventures of a team of heroic, cat-like humanoid aliens on a planet called ‘Third Earth’.
“The series plot begins with the dying planet ‘Thundera’ meeting its end, forcing the ThunderCats to flee their homeworld…”
"My version is going to be 100% the ’80’s version”, said Wingard about the new film.
"When I was in high school, I was so into ‘ThunderCats’ that I wrote this 270-something-page screenplay, like hand-written screenplay on it.
“It was my biggest dream growing up, to make a “ThunderCats’ movie, and so…

Modern fandom, to say the least, is very misguided in its sense of entitlement. As proof, look no further than Change dot org, a website where anyone can start a petition for just about anything. Amongst the dozens of joke petitions, the hundreds of political petitions, and other types of requests on the website, you can find many (way too many) petitions regarding the arts and entertainment. More specifically, petitions involving what fans believe should (or should not) be included in their beloved franchises.
Perhaps, if one's feeling charitable, such petitions had some merit back during the days when most filmmakers working on franchise films were only barely aware of any given series and its fanbase. Nowadays — really, for the last 20-odd years or so — studios and producers seek to hire creators who are already self-avowed fans of a given character or source material, the better to hopefully circumvent issues with fan demands.

One of the best moments in the wonderfully silly "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" arrives near the end, where Godzilla and Kong team up, head down into the Hollow Earth, and engage in a zero gravity fight against the villainous Skar King and other creatures. The monsters flip and spin and summersault through the air, bonking into each other as the camera whirls around. It's ridiculous in all the right ways. The movie offers up a goofy explanation as to why there's suddenly zero gravity, but honestly, it doesn't matter. It's all just an excuse to have Godzilla and Kong flying through the air. I'm sure there will be some cynics who think this moment goes too far; that it dips too much into parody territory. Not me! I love every ridiculous second of the big zero gravity fight.

We love Godzilla, don't we folks? Our big chonky boy has been stomping on cities for 70 years, and he shows no signs of slowing down. Heck, we recently got two wonderful Godzilla movies. There's the excellent, Oscar-winning "Godzilla Minus One," which just recently hit Netflix, and then there's the wonderfully silly MonsterVerse entry "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire." These movies take very different approaches to Big G, proving how flexible and malleable the character is. In "Godzilla Minus One," the big lizard represents the horrors of war, while in "Godzilla x Kong" he's kind of like a giant cat who takes long naps and then wakes up to smash sh*t.
While Kong gets most of the screentime in "Godzilla x Kong," Godzilla still pops up to make his presence known, especially during the movie's big action-packed climax. And when Godzilla finally shows up to do his thing at the end of the movie,...

To date, there have been five films and one TV series in the MonsterVerse series, a high-profile American reinterpretation of Toho's long-running Godzilla series. The series began in 2014 with Gareth Edwards' "Godzilla," and that first film was a massive hit, but in terms of quality, the Monsterverse overall has been a mixed bag at best. Jordan Vogt-Roberts' "Kong: Skull Island" was a decent blockbuster, but the first and third films in the series — the third being "Godzilla: King of the Monsters" — lacked a sense of whimsy and fun, qualities vital to the Toho Godzilla films of the '60s and '70s.
It wouldn't be until Adam Wingard directed "Godzilla vs. Kong" in 2021 that the code would be cracked. Edwards had previously tried to make Godzilla into something smoky and stern, capturing the tone of a post-9/11 bum-out actioner with none of the actual thematic heft. Wingard knew that a...

It is a shame that Adam Wingard won't be returning to direct any more movies in the MonsterVerse, but we can hope that the franchise will veer into fresh directions with a change of hands. Wingard's contributions have shaped a chunk of the expectations we have from the kaiju-focused franchise, especially the lore surrounding Hollow Earth and the monsters that inhabit it. Before the director ventured into making "Godzilla vs. Kong" and the recently released "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire," he dabbled in low-budget horror projects such as "The Guest" and "You're Next," and has currently set his sights on helming an action-thriller titled "Onslaught." But what was it like for Wingard to adapt to the expectations surrounding a kaiju blockbuster centered on an epic, highly-anticipated fight between two beasts with unresolved beef?
For starters, Wingard had a clear roadmap planned out for "Godzilla vs. Kong," where a singular...

There are human characters in Adam Wingard's charmingly silly "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire," and some of them — like Dan Stevens' monster veterinarian Trapper — are a lot of fun. But let's get real: no one watches these movies for the humans. Instead, we watch for monster mayhem. We want to see big bois Godzilla and Kong smash a bunch of sh*t and be burly monsters.
"Godzilla x Kong" may not be the best entry in the so-called MonsterVerse, but gosh is it a lot of fun to watch. And part of that fun comes from the fact that Wingard and his writers Terry Rossio, Simon Barrett, and Jeremy Slater have figured out the right formula for this sort of flick: fewer scenes with humans, more scenes with monsters. As a result of this approach, there are long stretches of "Godzilla x Kong" that focus entirely on Kong...

Oscar-nominated 2022 feature “TÁR” made a chilling statement onscreen, but the film appears to have sourced one particular audio clip from an iconic horror movie: “The Blair Witch Project,” directed by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez.
Heather Donahue said during an interview with Variety that “TÁR” used her final scream from “The Blair Witch Project” for a key scene of its own — and without permission. In “TÁR,” the titular composer Lydia Tár (Cate Blanchett) is running in the woods and hears a startling cry from an unseen woman. According to Donahue, that scream was sampled from the 1999 Lionsgate film “The Blair Witch Project,” heard at the very end of the film as her character appears to die offscreen.

There's a new king in town. It may have happened just as the movie is arriving on Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD, but "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" has passed a majorly impressive box office milestone. Two and a half months after director Adam Wingard's follow-up to 2021's "Godzilla vs. Kong" hit theaters, it has officially passed 2017's "Kong: Skull Island" to become the highest-grossing movie in the MonsterVerse franchise.
According to Deadline, "Godzilla x Kong" has now amassed $570 million worldwide, taking it just past the $568.6 million total of "Skull Island." Wingard's second MonsterVerse film has earned $196.3 million domestically to go with $373.7 million internationally. The biggest difference is that "Skull Island" made a whopping $400 million of its total overseas in its day. The only film in the franchise to make more than "GxK" domestically was 2014's "Godzilla" ($200 million domestically/$529 million worldwide) directed by Gareth Edwards. That film kicked...

In Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Mothra made her surprise return and helped the movie's title characters put their differences aside. The iconic Kaiju perished in Godzilla: King of the Monsters courtesy of the evil King Ghidorah, making the apparent retcon confusing for many fans.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire may have received mixed reviews (on Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a disappointing 54% score), but it now sits atop the MonsterVerse as the franchise's most successful movie yet.
Despite being released on Digital platforms last month, the movie rampaged to a mighty $570 million at the global box office this weekend. As a result, it's surpassed Kong: Skull Island as the franchise's most successful entry to date.
With a surprisingly frugal $135 million budget - the lowest in the MonsterVerse's history - there's no denying that Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is a box office hit. Grossing $196 million domestically and $371.3 million internationally, Warner Bros. and Legendary have netted a tidy profit at a time theaters are struggling due to relatively few hit movies being released.
Here's how each MonsterVerse movie compares in terms of box office revenue:

Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire that hit theaters in March 2024 amidst lots of hype has lived up to the lofty expectations from fans across the world. The 5th film in the MonsterVerse franchise, which is a follow-up to the 2021 blockbuster, sees Godzilla and Kong reunite to fight an unknown threat hidden within the Earth that poses grave danger to humans and Titans alike.

In 2012, The Amazing Spider-Man promised fans an "Untold Story," only for it to be very much the same as what we'd seen in Sam Raimi's movie.
While the trailers featured innovative Pov web-slinging scenes, those were largely absent from the finished product and what we did get proved largely underwhelming. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 upped the ante, though, delivering high-flying sequences more in line with Raimi's trilogy.
When Marvel Studios rebooted Peter Parker for the MCU, a great many changes were made to the character...including making him a "Friendly Neighbourhood" Spider-Man.
As a result, it wasn't until 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home that we got a true "final swing."
According to scooper @MyTimeToShineH, the plan is for Spider-Man 4 to feature web-slinging sequences more in line with what we saw before Marvel Studios' trilogy. This will surely be music to Spidey fans' ears as it was sorely missing...

5 Highest Grossing Godzilla Movies Ranked ( Photo Credit – YouTube )
The king of monsters is ruling the global box office. According to Deadline, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has surpassed its predecessors as the highest-grossing movie in the Legendary and Warner Bros Monsterverse franchise.
After Warner Bros’ Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’s disappointing run, which grossed only $58 million domestically and another $85 million from overseas markets, the Adam Wingard-directed Godzilla installment swooped in to save the studio.
While Furiosa failed to recoup its $170 million budget, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire smashed records, accumulating $570 million around the world. The film also beat the record held by the 2014 Godzilla movie.

Pictures)

Bad Boys: Ride or Die may have easily taken the top spot at the box office, but there’s a god and a king that may have something louder to say than Mike and Marcus. Per reports, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has officially become the highest-grossing movie in the MonsterVerse, hitting $570 million worldwide more than 10 weeks after first hitting theaters.
The previous champ of the MonsterVerse was 2017’s Kong: Skull Island, which, according to The Numbers, topped out at $561 million (although Deadline reports it at $568.6 million). The 2014 Godzilla holds at $529 million, while 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong and 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters were nowhere near the half billion dollar mark, with the latter having the franchise-low of $383 million.
Godzilla x Kong opened with $80 million domestically, which, while not hitting the mark set by 2014’s Godzilla, was enough to open at #1, a spot it held for its second week as well.

In a global box office that’s still licking its wounds from the strike, here’s something to scream about: Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is the highest grossing movie in the Legendary and Warner Bros Monsterverse franchise at $570M around the world.
That beats previous Monsterverse champ 2017’s Kong Skull Island which stomped to $568.6M. Broken out New Empire‘s grosses are $373.7M abroad and $196.3M domestic. Overall, New Empire is the highest grossing Monsterverse title in 35 markets including Brazil, Colombia, France, India, Indonesia, Mexico and UAE.
Props here to Warner Bros marketing, but also the global distribution team. Realize this: Sony’s Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire was originally on Easter weekend. Then the Culver City lot moved that movie up to March 22. This created a golden opportunity for Warners to step in and take over holy weekend, which has historically been a rich launchpad for the studio with Clash of the Titans,...

Following the announcement of Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire director Adam Wingard's shock exit from the MonsterVerse last month, Legendary has found itself a new director to helm the sequel to their latest box-office behemoth. As reported by THR, I Am Mother director Grant Sputore has been tapped to steer the Kaiju franchise's next Titan team-up, which is being written by Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings and Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse scribe Dave Callaham.
Precious little is known about the future instalment in Legendary's MonsterVerse series, though it is being described as a direct continuation of the franchise, built around Godzilla, Kong, and various other Titans. Before Wingard's departure from the project, the director had teased that a third Godzilla x Kong collab would likely see our beloved irradiated lizard take centre stage, with the tantalising prospect of an appearance from legendary Kaiju Destoroyah having...
