The former leader of theater-owner’s group NATO has a new way to get your independent film into movie theaters — one intended to cut out the middleman.

John Fithian is launching an online marketplace to connect filmmakers directly with exhibitors. The platform is called “Attend,” and it puts the “intelligence” into its artificial intelligence. Attend’s tech, powered by the Vista Group, pairs filmmakers with the specific theaters best suited to their movie. For exhibitors, Attend is a portal to a broader range of content. This way, filmmakers retain the rights to their movie, and exhibitors keep control over their screens.

Sorry about all of that, distributors.

A filmmaker uploads details about (and assets from) their films directly into Attend, including metadata and other specifics. The platform’s AI will match the movie with theaters based on their customer data, local demographics, and affinity groups.

The trailer for “Exhibiting Forgiveness,” the directorial debut of artist Titus Kaphar, has been unveiled, featuring stars André Holland and Andra Day.

The drama follows acclaimed painter Tarrell (Holland), whose life is upended by an unexpected visit from his estranged father (John Earl Jelks) who is desperate to reconcile with him. In the trailer, Tarrell grapples with his mother (Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor) about their reconnection, as she pushes him to speak to his dad.

“If you don’t forgive others for their past sins, then you can’t be forgiven,” she tells Tarrell.

After premiering at the 2024 Sundance Festival and screening at the New Directors/New Films festival, Titus Kaphar’s directorial debut has been acquired by Roadside Attractions, IndieWire can confirm. It will open nationwide this fall for awards season.

The feature is based on the incredible story of Jeffrey Manchester, an eccentric and charming serial robber who carried out break-ins at over 60 McDonald’s restaurants overnight by accessing them through their roofs. The following morning, he would empty the cash register after herding the staff into the freezers. Despite his criminal activity, the former U.S. Army Reserve officer was known for his gentle demeanour and rarely resorted to violence. He was given the nicknames ‘Rooftop Robber’ or ‘Roofman.’

82 films have been selected to screen during the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. In addition, eight episodic titles and a New Frontier interactive experience have made the cut and will be included in the upcoming festival.

17,435 projects were submitted for 2024 inclusion, setting a new festival record.

“From the first edition in 1985, Sundance Film Festival has aimed to provide a space to gather, celebrate, and engage with risk-taking artists that are committed to bringing their independent visions to audiences — the Festival remains true to that goal to this day,” stated Robert Redford, Sundance Institute Founder and President. “It continues to evolve, but its legacy of showcasing bold work that starts necessary conversations continues with the 2024 program.”

The 40th Sundance Film Festival will take place January 18 – 28, 2024, in Park City and Salt Lake City. Ticket packages and passes are currently on sale.

It’s almost time again for me to pack my bags and head to Park City, Utah, for the 2024 edition of the Sundance Film Festival. The last few years have been challenging for the fest, with the 2021 and 2022 editions only being online due to the pandemic. The 2023 edition was a hybrid version that sported a few high-profile debuts, including A24’s horror hit Talk to Me, but overall was a bit of a modest year in terms of stuff that broke out. However, 2024 seems to be a high-end year for the fest, with tons of big stars on the way to the festival, including Pedro Pascal, Kristen Stewart (there with two movies), Sebastian Stan, Woody Harrelson and many more.

Apple TV+ has released the trailer for Season 3 of “Slow Horses.” The first two episodes will premiere on Nov. 29, and the remaining four episodes will be released weekly on Wednesdays through Dec. 27.

Hulu is in the early stages of development on a new chapter of “Prison Break” with “Mayans M.C.” cocreator Elgin James attached to write, from 20th Television, the network announced on Thursday.

The original series, which starred Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell as incarcerated brothers, ran on Fox from 2005 to 2008, with a one-season revival in 2017. The new series is expected to feature a fresh cast of characters attempting a daring jailbreak.

The original, which was created by Paul Scheuring, was nominated for a Primetime Emmy for Ramin Djawadi’s main title music. It also had a video game “Prison Break: The Conspiracy” released in 2010.

James will serve as writer and executive producer on the revival, with Dawn Olmstead, Paul Scheuring, Marty Adelstein and Neal Moritz set as non-writing executive producers.

When Exhibiting Forgiveness, the first movie from African-American painter Titus Kaphar, started shooting in New Jersey in June, producers of the independent film were bracing themselves for a potential SAG-AFTRA strike.

“We started with our fingers crossed,” says producer Jamie Patricof of the movie, which stars a cast of as-yet unannounced SAG actors, including at least one Oscar nominee.

The producers, including Producers Guild president Stephanie Allain and Blue Valentine director Derek Cianfrance, stayed in close touch with their SAG rep as talks between the actors’ union and the Alliance of Motion Picture Television Producers continued over the next month and hired a labor attorney to help them navigate the system. When SAG officially called the strike on July 13, Exhibiting Forgiveness had five days left of shooting, and the movie became among the first productions to apply for and receive one of the guild’s interim agreements.
