Dang, people are really into NATO speeches.
Per Nielsen, 24.2 million people watched President Joe Biden’s solo live news conference on Thursday, July 11. As first noted by the New York Times, that is nearly 5 million viewers more than the Oscars got in March (19.5 million) — and these were the strongest Academy Awards since Covid.
And remember: Thursday’s conference took place two days before the attempted assassination of his presidential-election opponent (again) Donald Trump.
The Biden press conference aired from approximately 7:30 p.m. Et until 8:30 p.m. Et. It was simulcast across eight TV networks: ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, Univision, CNN, Fox News Channel, and MSNBC. The Academy Awards air (only) on ABC.
All told, Fox News drew the single-largest audience for Biden’s presser. Nearly 80 percent of all viewers (on any channel) were age 55 or older.

President Joe Biden’s televised press conference Thursday evening attracted a sizable audience.
More than 24 million people watched the press event across eight broadcast and cable outlets, according to Nielsen. Summer is for streaming — at least, according to the Nielsen charts.
Six titles exceeded the billion-minute mark from June 10 to 16, led by Bridgerton, which took the top spot back from Your Honor with 3.5B minutes viewed. Season 3B dropped during this interval, and Nielsen says those four episodes accounted for a whopping 2.5B minutes. The audience was also 77% female.
There was a fairly wide margin between first and second place, as Your Honor came in No. 2 with 1.8B minutes viewed. However, that’s still up 24% from the week before, indicating that the series continued to gain traction since landing on Netflix. The viewership total is combined with its original home, Paramount+, where it also remains, but there’s no denying that Netflix has played a large role in this audience growth.

The Gladiator movie from 2000 was one of the most epic masterpieces ever made, delivering the ultimate cinematic experience that could never be replicated in any other movie. In fact, even actress Connie Nielsen, who played the iconic Lucilla in the original film and would be returning in the sequel, couldn’t help but admit just how irreplaceable that action/adventure piece of work is.

According to what Nielsen shared from her experience of working on the movie, lead performers Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix left no stone unturned throughout their time playing Maximus and Commodus respectively. If anything, Nielsen feels that their portrayal coupled with sheer determination is proof that recreating the 2000 smash-hit would indeed be an incredibly tough task!

While it seems like Barbenheimer was one of those phenomenons that will never be replicated, Gladiator II and Wicked: Part One have a chance to bring the same friendly competition to the big screen later this year.
Both films hit theaters ahead of Thanksgiving week, making way for a Barbenheimer part two — and Gladiator II star Paul Mescal is here for it.
“Wickdiator doesn’t really roll off the tongue, does it? I think my preference would probably be Glicked if it has a similar effect to what it did for Barbie and Oppenheimer,” the Oscar nominee told Entertainment Tonight. “It would be amazing ’cause I think the films couldn’t be more polar opposites, and it worked in that context previously. So, fingers crossed people come out and see both films on opening weekend.”

The three-minute (!) clip offers a comprehensive and intriguing look at the long-awaited sequel to Scott’s 2000 historical epic. Paramount Pictures has rolled out a new set of images from Gladiator II, its historical epic following up Ridley Scott’s iconic 2000 film Gladiator, which won five Oscars including Best Picture.
With Scott returning as director, the sequel led by Paul Mescal has him playing Lucius — the grandson of Rome’s former emperor Marcus Aurelius and son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) — in a story taking place decades after the first film ended. Notably, Lucius is also the nephew of Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), who murdered his father Marcus in order to seize the throne.
When we meet the grown-up Lucius, he’s residing peacefully with his family in Numidia. But when Roman soldiers led by General Marcus Acacius (Pedro Pascal) invade, he’s forced into slavery. Perhaps Amazon Prime is not just a means of getting next-day toilet paper directly to your door. A new survey suggests that Amazon Prime Video is becoming so important to Prime users, it is closing the gap on the e-retailer’s free, fast shipping as the top reason people subscribe to Amazon Prime.
A Tuesday research note by the investment-banking firm Evercore Isi, obtained by IndieWire, has the latest results of an annual survey of 1,100 Amazon Prime members in the U.S. over the last two weeks. The analysts there found a spike in the number of members who listed Prime Video as one of their top reasons for maintaining a subscription to the Amazon services bundle (respondents could pick from multiple options). Sixty-one percent of respondents chose Prime Video among the main reasons they subscribe; 73 percent chose the shipping benefit.
The two top perks are trending in very different directions.

Back in 2015, Pixar's "Inside Out" brought us into the mind of Riley, a young girl living with her family in Minnesota. We watched as Riley grew up through the eyes of her core emotions: Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Anger (Lewis Black), Fear (Bill Hader), and Disgust (Mindy Kaling). Each of the emotions helped shape Riley's life experiences, but as she got older and dealt with the challenge of moving from Minnesota to San Francisco, it brought a lesson for both Riley and Joy.
While Joy was always trying to make sure Riley was happy, the energetic emotion had to realize that sometimes it's okay for Riley to be sad, and experiencing sadness can ultimately bring us right back to happiness. But as we left Riley on the cusp of her becoming a teenager at the end of "Inside Out," there were still many more lessons for Riley and Joy to learn.

Megan was then carried by her crewmates to a different area of the ship while Nielsen came to check on her and asked if she was okay. “No, I just stepped and my hip popped out,” Megan replied, crying. According to ESPN, the two-game series between the Sooners and the Texas Longhorns averaged 2M viewers, up 24% from last year and 3% from the previous all-time high in 2015.
Game 2 peaked with 2.5M viewers. Its 2M average viewers put it at the fifth-best Wcws game on record.

Jeannette Charles, the Queen Elizabeth II look-alike who played the British monarch for laughs in National Lampoon’s European Vacation, in the first Naked Gun movie and in the last Austin Powers film, has died. She was 96.
Charles died Sunday at a hospice facility in Great Baddow, Essex, England, her daughter, Carol Christophi, announced. “Mum was a real character and a force of nature. She had an amazing life,” she said. “She was always respectful of the queen and adored the royal family.”
Queen Elizabeth II died in September 2022, also at age 96.

Coming on to direct the sequel of an Oscar-winning animated feature is a daunting prospect, but luckily Kelsey Mann had producer Mark Nielsen to help with Inside Out 2. Having worked as an associate producer on the original Inside Out, Nielsen was thrilled when Pete Docter, who directed the original, suggested he work with Mann on the sequel.
Inside Out 2 returns to follow Riley Anderson (Kensington Tallman) and her emotional network during her teenage years. As she hits puberty, a crew of new emotions shows up, upsetting the balance Joy (Amy Poehler) has created in Riley’s mind. Mann did extensive research into how the brain is changed during puberty to create new settings and ideas for the sequel. Inside Out 2 releases in theaters on June 14, 2024.

Few might remember John McTiernan's 2003 military thriller "Basic," a film that was, at the time, touted as a grand reunion between "Pulp Fiction" stars John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson. Because of its star power, "Basic" cost $50 million to make, but raked in a paltry $43 million at the box office. It currently sits at a 21% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and I recall reading Roger Ebert's scathing one-star review with a wince; Ebert said that "Basic" was "was not a film that could be understood," stating that it was so twisty and full of trickery that is might be better called a "jerk-around movie." To elucidate on Ebert's point, the plot description for "Basic" on Wikipedia runs eleven paragraphs. The film is only 98 minutes long.
The plot can, however, be explained (kind of), and we shall now, dear readers, endeavor to unpack this forgotten 2003 thriller for all future generations.

When we last left Riley Andersen, the young protagonist of Pixar’s 2015 animated classic, Inside Out, she was 12 years old, and her still-developing mind was finding a way to balance all the core emotions of childhood, including Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust, and Fear. Nearly a decade later, Pixar is returning to the vast territory inside Riley’s mind as she turns 13 and enters adolescence with Inside Out 2. This time she’ll grapple with new emotions, changes to her psyche and body, and challenges both in her inner mind and the outside world.

“White Collar,” the police procedural that concluded on USA in 2014, made its debut on Nielsen’s weekly streaming rankings with 717 million minutes watched during the April 22-28 viewing window, landing in the No. 8 position.
The decade-old show’s viewership bump is thanks to what has recently become known as the Netflix effect; the streaming service has seen big success licensing titles with high episode counts that have previously finished their runs on other platforms.
But unlike “Suits,” the best example of this for its historic Nielsen run in summer 2023, “White Collar” took three weeks to make it to the chart, having been added to Netflix on April 1. This is unusual, as titles like “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and “Killing Eve” made the overall Top 10 immediately after their Netflix debuts as well, while “White Collar” hasn’t even been on the list of the Top 10 acquired titles before now.

Fred M. Wilcox's 1956 sci-fi classic "Forbidden Planet" was a notably opulent affair, at least as sci-fi films go. Its budget at the time was only $1.96 million (which shakes out to about $22 million today) comparatively small to the historical epics Hollywood was overspending on at the time; "The Ten Commandments," for instance, cost a whopping $13 million, while 1956's Best Picture winner, "Around the World in 80 Days" cost about $6 million. "Forbidden Planet" was a production on par with 1953's "War of the Worlds," a colorful, large-scale production infused with fantastical spacecraft and weird robots. Robby (voiced by Marvin Miller), the robot featured in "Forbidden Planet," reportedly cost $125,000 to make — about a million in today's dollars.
The production designer on the film was Arthur Lonergan, the Oscar winner behind "The Oscar." Prior to "Forbidden Planet," Lonergan had an extensive career working on shows like "Mr. & Mrs. North," and on low-profile films like "Black Beauty,...

“Killing Eve” made its way onto Nielsen’s weekly streaming rankings for the April 15-21 viewing window, enjoying a similar effect as titles like “Suits” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” that have seen increased popularity upon being added to Netflix despite having concluded years ago. The BBC thriller was watched for 719 million minutes in its first week on the streamer, landing at No. 8 on the chart.
But an interesting aspect of the series’ surge is the demographic breakdown of its audience. Per Nielsen, one third of “Killing Eve” viewership this week came from people age 65 and above, representing the largest concentration of viewers. That’s a surprise for a series perhaps most famous for the sexual tension between its two female leads, with one being a psychopathic assassin.
At the top of the chart this week was “Fallout,” which hit 2.6 billion minutes watched in its first full week availability after debuting with...

It’s time for some “CSI: Nielsen Ratings.”
CBS is set to win the 2023-24 season as the most-watched network — again — it’s now been 16 straight seasons of the same. CBS has now broken broadcast television’s longest winning streak on record, which was also CBS: From 1955 to 1970, when “Gunsmoke,” “The Andy Griffith Show,” and (some of) “I Love Lucy” ruled its airwaves.
Fast-forward 50 years to the current TV season, which runs from fall (September) through spring (May), and CBS has won 21 of the past 22 years. CBS is also poised to win the season among adults 18-49, long-considered the key demographic for advertisers, as well as its own target market, viewers 25-54. It is also number 1 this year among 18-34-year-olds; Super Bowl Lviii sure helped CBS pull those victories out of its football helmet.

Road House and Quiet on Set brought some variety to the Nielsen streaming charts in March.
During the week of March 18 to 24, there were four different streamers represented among the Top 5 streaming titles — Netflix, Prime Video, Max and Disney+. According to Nielsen, this is a rarity that has only occurred once before, when the same four platforms shared the stage in October 2022.
In the top spot was Netflix’s 3 Body Problem, which debuted all eight episodes on March 21. In its first four days on the streamer, it amassed 1.37B minutes viewed.
Second place went to Prime Video’s Road House, the reimagining of the 1980s Patrick Swayze film, which was right behind 3 Body Problem with an impressive 1.32B minutes viewed. This is particularly noteworthy because it is far shorter than 3 Body and therefore at a significant disadvantage when it comes to these streaming rankings.

Reality show stars are known to turn up the crazy for the cameras. In the case of “Selling the Hamptons,” Dylan Eckardt may have turned it down.
On the hit Max series, the über-Realtor — whose clients include everyone from Kanye West to Justin Bieber — comes off like the most immodest (and watchable) villain since “Beauty and the Beast”’s Gaston. Off-camera, sitting at a conference table in his Beverly Hills office, Eckardt offers an even more heightened version of what you’ve seen on-screen.
“People wanted me to be a fisherman. Or a bartender with four kids and a fat fucking wife,” he tells me of his blue-collar upbringing in what has become Long Island’s billionaire enclave. “And now I’m driving a bulletproof G-Wagen.” Although a publicist hovers nearby, he whispers, “There’s no PR guys telling me what to say.” Obviously.

Joseph Quinn’s popularity increased following his scene-stealing role as Eddie in Stranger Things season 4. Before that, the actor had small roles in films like Overlord, and Hoard. He played Arthur Havisham in the BBC series Dickensian and Leonard Bast in Howards End. He is currently one of the rising stars whom people are excited about.
Joseph Quinn’s breakout role was in Stranger Things as Eddie Munson
Quinn landed his biggest role as he has been tapped in to play Johnny Storm/ Human Torch in the upcoming Fantastic Four film. In the current climate where the discourse around superhero movie fatigue has become notoriously popular, Quinn promised that his Fantastic Four film will be a unique Marvel film that will change that perception.

Exclusive: Leslie Nielsen’s Lt. Frank Drebin was wrong: Cops and women do mix, and with that we have Pamela Anderson joining Liam Neeson in Paramount Pictures’ untitled Naked Gun reboot, which Akiva Schaffer is directing and executive producing for a July 18, 2025 theatrical release.
The Baywatch actress of 110 episodes has the comedy chops; she’s starred in such big-screen titles as Scary Movie 3 and Superhero Movie, both satirical movies ala the spirit of Naked Gun. Anderson also reprised her TV role of C.J. Parker in Paramount’s big-screen 2017 redux of Baywatch that starred Dwayne Johnson, Zac Efron and Alexandra Daddario.
Dan Gregor and Doug Mand wrote the draft script along with Schaffer for Naked Gun. Gregor and Mand also wrote the Emmy-winning Disney+ movie Chip ‘N Dale: Rescue Rangers. Seth MacFarlane and Erica Huggins are producing Naked via their company Fuzzy Door. Daniel M. Stillman is EP.

Instead of sending in the lions, Paramount unleashed a first look at Ridley Scott’s highly-anticipated Gladiator II at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. Appropriately screened at Caesar’s Palace, where the annual onslaught of film and television previews takes place, the sequel to Scott’s 2000 action drama starring Russel Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix includes a brutal display of power and corruption as Lucius (Paul Mescal) aims to become as formidable as Crowe’s iconic character Maximus Decimus Meridius.
During Paramount’s CinemaCon presentation for Gladiator II, Ridley Scott introduced the film from London while the entire cast sent comments in a video compilation. Scott says Gladiator II is more spectacular than the original. Thems bold words, sir!
Pedro Pascal has always been a huge Gladiator fan and has seen it twice in theaters. Meanwhile, Denzel Washington says the new film is why people go to the movies.

There are not a lot of actors in Hollywood whose presence itself on-screen exudes badassery. Liam Neeson has carved a unique niche for himself in the film industry, where directors and producers look up to him for serious roles. From Schindler’s List to Batman Begins, the actor has carefully picked feathers for his cap that are a testament to his effervescent acting abilities.
However, he often goes offbeat and picks up projects that show off a different side to his demanding presence on the silver screen, like he is about to do in his upcoming The Naked Gun Reboot.

Liam Neeson is (emotionally) baring all ahead of leading the “Naked Gun” reboot.
The actor told ComingSoon.com that he feels “slightly nervous” about leading a sequel to the iconic comedy films. Neeson says he knows his comedy chops have “to be proven.”
“It has to be proven,” Neeson said of said chops. “So I’m slightly nervous of it. A little Stephen Colbert sketch or Ricky Gervais, I’m Ok because it’s short. But a whole film, we’ll see. We’ll see.”
The original “Naked Gun” films starred Leslie Nielsen as hapless detective Frank Drebin whose cases always become a comedy of errors. The films were a spinoff from short-lived ’80s TV series “Police Squad!” In the new movie, due out next year, Neeson will play the son of Nielsen’s character in a sequel directed by “SNL” and Lonely Island alum Akiva Schaffer, with Seth MacFarlane producing.

“Avatar: The Last Airbender” dropped to the No. 2 position on Nielsen’s weekly streaming rankings for Feb. 26-March 3 after debuting on top the week before. During its second week on the chart — its first full week of availability on Netflix — the series was watched for 1.9 billion minutes, a 25% decrease from the prior week’s 2.6 billion minutes.
Comparing last week’s Nielsen chart to Netflix’s own data suggested that “Avatar” had a more successful debut in the U.S. than in other territories. However, both companies’ Top 10s show that the series didn’t have the same staying power as other big-budget Netflix projects, which tend to increase in viewership from their opening weekends to their first full weeks of availability.
The show did drive renewed interest in the “Avatar” IP, however: Per Nielsen, the animated Nickelodeon series that inspired Netflix’s outing saw a viewership bump during the week of Feb.

After seven days of delayed viewership, ABC’s launch of “9-1-1” remains the network’s most-watched show among Total Viewers on Thursday nights, topping its lead outs “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Station 19.” However, in most key sales demographics, “Grey’s Anatomy” came out on top with the exception of Men 18-49 rating, where the Fox transplant firefighter series excelled above all the other broadcast shows airing that night.

Leslie Nielsen famously flipped his career 180 degrees when he started working with the Zuckers — David and Jerry — on the 1980 comedy Airplane! Nielsen was a seasoned dramatic actor who took his serious demeanor and used it to deliver the silliest of lines in a dry manner, resulting in some of the greatest comedy performances. Nielsen was able to become a leading man late in his career in The Naked Gun series, which would then spin him off into more leading roles in similar comedies, which would not necessarily be made by the Zuckers.
Enter Liam Neeson. The thespian has already reinvented himself when the former dramatic actor starred in 2008’s Taken, which showed that he could use his tall stature in the action genre. Neeson’s acting route would eventually land him in some comedy roles, including a self-parody guest spot on Life’s Too Short and working with Seth MacFarlane on...

It was announced all the way back in 2022 that Paramount was going to be remaking "Naked Gun" with Liam Neeson as the star. There was little movement on the project in terms of additional cast members or a projected release window throughout all of 2023, leading many to believe the film had been scrapped or entered a new circle of Hollywood production hell. While many view the "Naked Gun" films as sacred comedy texts that dare not be remade, it's happening, and there's a pretty incredible team behind it. The "Naked Gun" films famously changed the trajectory of star Leslie Nielsen's career, so perhaps the new film could do the same for the gruff, action antics of Neeson. We're still quite a ways away from the release of the film, so here's everything you need to know about the upcoming remake.

It was another week atop the Nielsen streaming charts for Griselda.
The Sofia Vergara fronted Netflix series amassed 1.7B viewing minutes from January 29 to February 4, which was up ever so slightly from its premiere week tally. Once again, it was the most-streamed title by a fairly large margin, which is quite impressive considering the series only has six episodes.
It should not surprise anyone that Young Sheldon hung on tight to second place with 1.3B viewing minutes, while Bluey also surpassed the billion-minute mark during this interval.
Prime Video also seems to have another smash hit on its hands with Mr & Mrs Smith. The series debuted on February 2 and collected 964M viewing minutes across its eight episodes. This is a pretty significant feat for Amazon, which has struggled to compete against the likes of Netflix (as have most of the streamers) when it comes to highly streamed content.

Based on the 1973 novel of the same name, the 1987 film often ranks among the best films of all time, and all of its cast members, including Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, and Mandy Patinkin continue to receive recognition for their roles even today.

It’s definite: there’s a new The Naked Gun film on the way, and Paramount has given it a summer 2025 release date. More here.
Well, this has been a long, long, long time coming. We’ve covered before Paramount Pictures’ attempt to get fourth The Naked Gun film moving. At first with the late Leslie Nielsen involved, and then after he passed, for a while it looked like Ed Helms was going to take on the lead role.
Now, it seems that Liam Neeson is to play the son of Nielsen’s Lieutenant Frank Drebin in whatever the new The Naked Gun movie ends up being called.
I’m one of many who’s not been won over yet by the idea of a new The Naked Gun film, but on the flip side, there are some positives. Notably the personnel behind the camera: Akiva Schaffer has previously directed...
