Nathan Gary is stepping down as the president of Megan Ellison’s Annapurna, a post he has held since 2021, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. Gary will also be departing the company.
The co-heads of Annapurna’s indie gaming division, Deborah Mars and Nathan Vella, are also departing.
Hector Sanchez recently rejoined Annapurna from Epic Games and was named the company’s president of interactive and new media. (Sanchez helped launch Annapurna Interactive in 2016.) He will oversee the company’s indie gaming efforts as Annapurna is also looking to expand into Aaa, or large-budget, games.
Under Ellison and her senior leadership, the company will integrate its in-house gaming operations with the rest of Annapurna’s divisions, which include film, TV and theater.
Gary was elevated to president following his time as chief of interactive, co-founding the company’s gaming division. In the past couple of years, Annapurna has ascended in the indie gaming space,...

James Graham, the creator of Sherwood, Dear England and Brexit: The Uncivil War, has urged the creation of “new universes” and greater risk taking in place of TV’s gatekeepers “falling back on tried and tested IP.”
Delivering this year’s Edinburgh TV Festival MacTaggart lecture, the prolific British scribe argued passionately for greater working class representation in the TV industry, along with criticizing commissioners’ ongoing temptation to opt for “source material, adaptations and expanded universes.”
Graham used the annual Edinburgh platform to plead for “new universes, which means – taking risks.”
He added: “New stories have to be at the heart of commissioning – scripted, non-scripted, factual, fictional … even in the most difficult climate, where the temptation, and we’re witnessing it, is to fall back on tried and tested IP.”
The industry should see “risk” as a long-term “vital” investment in the future health of the sector, Graham said, coming...

England and Spain’s nail-biting Euro 2024 final was watched by a peak of around 24 million viewers last night, failing to match the England vs Italy final three years ago.
The coverage on both the BBC and ITV averaged around 15 million across its hours-long run time, which was just ahead of the semi-final victory over the Netherlands.
According to Barb data supplied by overnights.tv, the game was viewed by 11.3 million on BBC One and a further 3.7 million on ITV, with a share just shy of 75% of overall viewers. In all likelihood, the rating was higher as viewing in pubs is not taken into account by Barb.
The broadcast becomes the most-watched of the year so far but was behind England’s previous final in 2021 against Italy, which was watched by a peak of 31 million. Other top-rated TV events of the recent past include the funerals of Princess Diana and Queen Elizabeth II,...

Spain have become European football champions of 2024, beating England in a dramatic final match in Berlin Sunday evening.
Spain won the match 2-1 with Nico Williams scoring the first goal for Spain after 47 minutes, and Cole Palmer equalising for England soon after he came on as a substitute for England’s captain Harry Kane.
Spain scored their second goal of the night, with Mikel Oyarzabal putting the decisive ball in the net just four minutes before the end of the match.
Despite the loss, there were instantly calls for the often beleaguered England manager Gareth Southgate to be rewarded with a knighthood for leading the national team to its second successive European Cup final. England previously lost to Italy on penalties in 2021. That match took place at London’s Wembley Stadium, the setting for England’s last victory in an international tournament, 58 years ago, back in 1966.

Guy Ritchie’s Young Sherlock series has cast the boy genius’s parents.
Sherlock’s dad Silas will be played by Joseph Fiennes, while Natascha McElhone is Sherlock’s mum Cordelia. Fiennes, who we revealed earlier today is starring in the BBC’s drama about Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, joins his real-life nephew Hero Fiennes Tiffin, who is playing the protagonist.
Sherlock’s father is a scientist, explorer and self-made businessman, while his mum is described as a devoted mother, artist and matriarch of the Holmes clan.
Inspired by Andy Lane’s critically acclaimed book series, Prime Video’s show follows the 19-year-old, disgraced, raw, unfiltered, and unformed genius, when he finds himself caught up in a murder mystery at Oxford University that threatens his freedom. Diving into his first-ever case with a wild lack of discipline, Sherlock manages to unravel a globe-trotting conspiracy that will change his life forever. Ritchie is...

The European Football Cup tournament has got off to a cracking start – for broadcasters at least – with Friday evening’s opening match between host nation Germany and Scotland watched by an average of 5.8million viewers, with a peak of 9.8million.
The UK’s two main broadcasters ITV and BBC are sharing the spoils of the month-long competition, with Friday’s opening match being shown by ITV.
This primetime audience was a big jump on that for the opening match for the last Euros. When the BBC aired Turkey vs Italy in 2021 (Euro 2020 delayed by a year due to Covid), its average audience was 5.2m with a 6.9m peak.
While the ardent Scottish football fanbase will have significantly boosted Friday evening’s viewing figures, ITV’s smiles won’t reach Scotland today, still recovering from being on the wrong side of the biggest-ever win for the host in the European Championships...

Last night’s first general election debate between Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer was watched by an average of 4.8M viewers, falling more than 2M behind the previous debate in 2019.

It fell behind the previous head-to-head between Boris Johnson and Jeremy Corbyn in 2019, which garnered an audience of 7M.

What is better than witnessing your country win an international trophy after fifty-five long years—that too on your home soil? For English football fanatics, the answer would probably be nothing. The reason I’m using the term fanatics here is because we’re talking about the Netflix documentary The Final: Attack on Wembley, which focuses on the extreme chaos caused by the English football hooligans outside the Wembley stadium before the all-important Euro 2020 final. England was playing Italy and was on the verge of finally lifting an international trophy for the first time since 1966, the year in which the English team won the World Cup. Naturally, the spirit was high, and the English fans were on cloud nine, anticipating the moment that would possibly define all of their lives! That, of course, didn’t happen, but what’s worse than that was what the English fans did before the game.

Zig Zag, UK Producer Behind ‘I Wanna Marry Harry’ & ‘Danny Dyer’s Deadliest Men,’ Declared Insolvent
Exclusive: Zig Zag, the 25-year-old UK producer behind shows including Fox’s I Wanna Marry Harry, is shutting its production arm after being hit by the unscripted commissioning drought.
Zig Zag is putting Zig Zag Productions Limited into insolvency as part of a financial restructuring that has resulted in six employees being made redundant.
The company, founded in 1999 by Danny Fenton, has appointed an administrator following a meeting with creditors on Wednesday. The insolvency company will be announced shortly.
Deadline understands that Zig Zag had three shows greenlit last year, worth as much as £4.5M ($5.6M), but the series were delayed indefinitely amid uncertain market conditions.
Zig Zag’s other companies, including Zig Zag Holdings and Zig Zag Media Rights, will continue trading, meaning it is not inconceivable that the brand will live on if commissions come to fruition.
Zig Zag is not currently in production so no shows are at risk.

A TV adaptation of the National Theatre play Dear England is heading to BBC, who beat Netflix in a bidding war.

Deadline now reports that Dear England could have very narrowly been a Netflix production instead. There was a fierce bidding war over the rights and according to Deadline, Netflix made a “more lucrative” offer but writer James Graham and Left Bank Pictures chose the BBC instead.
The outlet also reports that the reason behind Graham and Left Bank’s decision was because the team “view Dear England as a national story that should be told by the UK’s national broadcaster.”

BBC drama boss Lindsay Salt has candidly floated the notion that the industry has moved from “peak TV to peak caution,” as she details an ambition to “help reshape the drama landscape at a critical time.”
Addressing producers and press for the first time since taking on the nation’s biggest drama commissioning job, Salt reflected on a decade since the phrase “peak TV” first entered the lexicon, raising concerns over “short-termism” and that “the big bets of the boom era are a thing of the past.”
“We’ve seen buyers retreat into cautious commissioning spaces,” said Salt. “The industry as a whole has become – dare I say it – a little fearful.”
Expanding her point, Salt said “financial pressures and commercial imperatives” have led buyers to “default to safe bets.”
She cited “inflation, content and platform saturation, retrenchment and the writers strike” as the key factors leading to “peak caution,...

Director of BBC Drama Lindsay Salt revealed the 12-strong slate – which adds up to 66 hours of top TV – at a press event in London, U.K. on Wednesday evening. It includes two more series of Belfast-based police drama “Blue Lights.”
“Inflation, content and platform saturation, streamer retrenchment, the writers’ strike… It’s all fed a serious slowdown,” Salt said as she unveiled the diverse slate. “Five years ago, everyone was willing to make brave choices, to experiment, to try something a little unorthodox. London, Aug 31 (Ians) Coach Gareth Southgate has kept faith with two senior players when naming his 26-man squad for England’s two games during the forthcoming international break.
Southgate included Harry Maguire and Jordan Henderson in the squad, despite Maguire remaining out of favour at Manchester United and without an appearance so far this season and Henderson opting to move to Saudi Arabia, which represents a less competitive competition than the Premier League.
The coach has handed a debut call-up to Chelsea defender Levi Colwill and recalled AC Milan’s Fikayo Tomori and Chelsea’s Ben Chilwell, who missed the World Cup, while Arsenal’s in-form Eddie Nketiah also gets the nod, reports Xinhua.

Dear England will run at the Cameron Mackintosh-owned Prince Edward Theatre in Soho, London for a 14-week season from October 9. National Theatre Productions is producing.
Fiennes will transfer with the drama. He has been praised for capturing Southgate’s determination to reignite the England team’s pride, plus the sense that the bloke’s a darn good egg. England stars such as captain Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling are also played in the show by actors.

Joseph Fiennes opened up about his role in playing Michael Jackson in a 2016 episode of Urban Myths.
In a recent interview with The Guardian, the Shakespeare In Love actor said that people were “right to be upset” and that giving him the role “was a wrong decision” and a “bad mistake.” The decision to cast Fiennes as Michael Jackson caused a significant backlash, accusing the actor of “whitewashing.”
Fans even created a petition to boycott the episode.
“Despite a public struggle with vitiligo, a rare skin disorder that results in the loss of pigment, [Jackson] identified in interviews as a proud black man, and went out of his way to fight for better treatment of black artists in the entertainment industry,” the petition stated.
Jackson’s family was outraged by the casting decision. His daughter, Paris Jackson, tweeted in 2017, “I’m so incredibly offended by it, as I’m sure plenty of people are as well,...

London, June 16 (Ians) With Manchester City’s England players in celebration mode following the club’s triumph in the Champions League last week, the national manager Gareth Southgate has warned his players, especially key midfielder Jack Grealish to cut down on alcohol consumption in the run-up to international friendlies.
Grealish is known for his celebrations after winning titles or trophies. He reportedly went on a binge after Pep Guardiola’s side defeated Inter Milan to win the Champions League 2023 title. The Manchester City players have been celebrating since that win and now Southgate has warned that they might miss more national team matches if they continue this.
Southgate had anyway decided not to include any of the Manchester City players for England’s friendly with Malta but has also warned the players not to cross the line during celebrations.
“There is a line,” England’s manager told local media ahead of Friday’s match.

For Joseph Fiennes, a new play about England football manager Gareth Southgate is a glorious chance to change his game. He talks about typecasting, his unusual childhood – and what happened when he stood up to Harvey Weinstein
The first thing Joseph Fiennes does, when we meet at London’s National Theatre so I can quiz him about playing England manager Gareth Southgate on stage, is quiz me about England manager Gareth Southgate. This is disconcerting, but understandable. Fiennes has yet to meet Southgate, having had to make do with YouTube. I’ve interviewed Southgate, albeit for half an hour a couple of years ago.
Did you like him, Fiennes asks? Did anything stand out? What was he like?...

London, May 30 (Ians) Manchester United’s coach, Erik ten Hag, says Harry Maguire faces a significant decision about his future with the club.
Though Maguire has a contract with Manchester United that runs until 2025 and continues to be a key part of the England squad, national team coach Gareth Southgate recently suggested that his international place could be at risk due to only playing 16 times in the Premier League, reports Xinhua.
Despite also featuring seven times in the Europa League, Maguire’s lack of sharpness led to errors in his team’s quarterfinal defeat to Sevilla, underlining the need for the towering defender to see more action.
However, with Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane ranking higher in the Old Trafford pecking order, Ten Hag concedes that it won’t be straightforward for the imposing defender.
“No one would be content with this situation,” the coach mentioned in an interview with The Times.

The Three Lions skipper struck his 54th international goal, breaking the national record of 53 goals he previously shared with Wayne Rooney, and helped his side claim their first win on Italian soil since 1961.
“It means everything. Once it hit the back of the net, there was so much emotion. It’s just a great night. We haven’t won in Italy for so long to score and win the game is special,” Kane said.
Italy’s defeat was their first in 41 Euro qualifiers, since losing to France in September 2006.

London, March 17 (Ians) England coach Gareth Southgate has made several changes to his squad for their Euro 2024 qualifying matches against Italy and Ukraine later this month.
Brentford striker Ivan Toney is rewarded for an excellent season that has seen him score 17 goals, while Chelsea full backs Ben Chilwell and Reece James are also included after having missed out on last year’s FIFA World Cup due to injury.
However, there is no place for Trent Alexander-Arnold, Conor Coady, Ben White or Callum Wilson, who were all present at the World Cup, while Raheem Sterling misses out through injury, a Xinhua report said.
Toney’s inclusion comes despite facing charges of breaching rules on betting, which could lead to him receiving a lengthy ban, but Southgate backed the powerful striker.

Joseph Fiennes (The Handmaid’s Tale) is set to portray England men’s soccer coach Gareth Southgate in a new play at the National Theatre in London.

British theatre director Rupert Goold will helm the play, which National Theatre artistic director Rufus Norris described as “a captivating examination into the complex psychology of the much loved beautiful game.”

London, Dec 18 (Ians) Gareth Southgate will remain as England’s manager until the European Championships in 2024, the Football Association (Fa) confirmed on Sunday.
After England’s quarterfinal exit at the FIFA World Cup 2022, Southgate had said he was conflicted about his future in the role. His current contract is due to expire in December 2024 and he will now remain in charge of England for what will be his fourth major tournament at the helm.

Doha (Qatar), Dec 11 (Ians) Another England World Cup dream dies in the quarterfinals meaning they carry on the ‘tradition’ of never making it past the last-eight outside of Europe.
England have now fallen in the quarterfinals seven times (more than any other country) with Qatar 2022 joining Germany 2006, South Korea and Japan 2002, Mexico 1986, Spain 1982 (which had a different competition format), Mexico 1970 and Chile 1962.
What makes this year’s exit tough to take for England fans is that it came in what was arguably the best match of the tournament to date. A match between two top sides, after a performance that probably deserved better and after seeing captain and striker, Harry Kane fire a penalty, that would have leveled the score at 2-2, high into the night sky of the Al Bayt Stadium.
Such an uncharacteristic miss for the player who 30 minutes earlier had equaled Wayne Rooney’s record of 53 goals in an England shirt.

Doha, Dec 11 (Ians) England coach Gareth Southgate was non-committal over his future following his side’s exit from the quarterfinals of the World Cup after a narrow 2-1 defeat to France.
England had more chances than France in the game, but were undone by a 25-meter drive from Aurelien Tchouameni and a header from Olivier Giroud.
Although capitain Harry Kane levelled once from the penalty spot, he fired a second penalty over the bar seven minutes from time.
“After every tournament we’ve reviewed and reflected. We need a little bit of time to make sure that everyone makes the right decisions,” Southgate — who has a contract until 2024 — was quoted as saying by Xinhua news agency.
Southgate admitted his frustration at the defeat that sends his side home.

"Looking back in 2018, we didn’t really know what to expect from the group. We went there with belief we could win it, but it was almost a new experience. We got to the semi-finals and everyone was over the moon, but whether we had full belief to go and win the tournament, I am not sure," said the Tottenham striker with Gareth Southgate’s side taking on reigning champions.
"But we backed that up by reaching the final of the Euros and the belief has been growing. On Sunday at the Al Bayt Stadium, Gareth Southgate’s side went into the half time break leading 2-0, opening the scoring in the 38th minute and adding a second in injury stoppage time of the opening session.
England netted a third one 13 minutes into the second half to take the game away from Aliou Cisse’s side and set up a quarter-final clash with France, which earlier on Sunday defeated Poland 3-1.
England and France have met twice before at the World Cup, both in group games which England won 2-0 en route to the 1966 title and 3-1 in 1982 and thus France will be looking for a positive result when the two meet on Sunday December 10 at Al Bayt Stadium.
Two other teams, Netherlands and Argentina which have already qualified, on Saturday, for the last-eight stage will clash on December 9 at Lusail Stadium.

Doha (Qatar), Dec 3 (Ians) The second day of matches in the last-16 sees England play Senegal while France play Poland. Here are some things to look out for on Sunday in Qatar.
1. France back and firing on all cylinders
France rested almost their entire first-choice side for their last group match after having already secured their place in the knockout stage, with their big players such as Kylian Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann only coming on in the closing minutes as they chased the game against Tunisia.
Coach Didier Deschamps will have his strongest line-up out against Poland on Sunday, with Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele and Olivier Giroud in attack, Griezmann in the hole behind them and Adrien Rabiot in the middle. They should be fresh and they should have few problems in reaching the quarterfinals.
2. Poland need a change of attitude
It’s not usual to see a side celebrate a defeat,...

Doha (Qatar), Dec 3 (Ians) England face Senegal in the FIFA World Cup last 16 on Sunday in Al Bayt, around 50 kilometers from Doha.
Gareth Southgate’s men will go into the match as favourites after scoring nine goals in the group stage.
So far, when England have been good in this World Cup, they have been very good indeed, with a midfield and attack moving the ball at pace and exploiting the speed and mobility of Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, Mason Mount, Phil Foden and Marcus Rashford.
However, the USA showed that with tight, energetic marking, they can be stopped, reducing their play to sterile horizontal passing across the back.
Foden and Rashford came into the side against Wales and impressed, with Rashford scoring twice and Foden also finding the target, as well as adding creativity. Southgate now has to decide whether to stick with the duo or bring back Mount and Saka.

Doha, Nov 30 (Ians) England striker Marcus Rashford explained his special goal celebrations after scoring twice to help England to a 3-0 win over Wales in the World Cup on Tuesday night.
The forward had his hands in an upwards gesture after his goals and was asked about it when he spoke to the press after the final whistle.
“Unfortunately, I lost a friend a couple of days ago after a long battle with cancer. I am pleased to be able to support him. He was a great person who came in my life,” he said, reports Xinhua.
The striker was also asked about England’s reaction after a disappointing 0-0 draw against the United States in their previous game.
“We were a little bit disappointed after the U.S. result. Thought we could’ve played a lot better and it was important to have a good performance the next game.

Good Morning Britain has aired Michael Sheen’s rousing speech to the Wales squad ahead of their match against England.
Wales will be playing England on Tuesday night (29 November) in the group stages of the World Cup for the first-ever home nations clash at the tournament.
On Tuesday’s episode of Gmb, the programme broadcasted footage of Sheen’s address to the Welsh squad from earlier this year.
In September, the Damned United star gave an impassioned speech to the football team during a visit to their training facility.
