‘Pavements’ Review: Alex Ross Perry’s Slacker Music Portrait Puts a Sweet, Meta Spin on the Rock Doc
The question Alex Ross Perry asked himself before embarking on the mad, four-faced project that is “Pavements” was: “What if Pavement was the most important band of all time?” It’s a fun idea, and Perry’s commitment to the bit cannot be questioned. An off-Broadway jukebox musical named after their breakthrough debut studio album “Slanted and Enchanted,” a fake “Bohemian Rhapsody”-style biopic starring Joe Keery and Jason Schwartzman, a museum exhibition Perry helped devise and that brims with mostly unimportant memorabilia, and an actual documentary all exist in service of “Pavements.” If the assignment in making a film about Pavement was part sincere, part fuck-you, a dash of incoherent anti-establishment thought and a tablespoon of self-indulgence, “Pavements” understands it perfectly. Making a film about the band any other way seems like a complete waste of time.
Perry frames Pavement as a protest band, and that’s sort of true.

The Late Show brought an end to its taping in Chicago, in conjunction with the 2024 Democratic National Convention, in true Windy City fashion by inviting two of beloved Chicagoians to perform: Mavis Staples and Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy.
Delivering a spirited rendition of The Staple Singers’ song, “Freedom Highway” — which was originally recorded in Chicago nearly 60 years ago — Staples and Tweedy brought passion to The Late Night stage, as their backing band provided a tremolo-washed, ‘60s-inspired arrangement. Moving to the groove, Staples particularly shined, singing the lines “March for freedom’s highway/ March each and every day/ Made up my mind and I won’t turn around” with a sense of hard-earned experience.

Staples is now 85, but going strong. This summer, she released her latest single, “Worthy,” a soulful track with an inventive, funky sound.

Not long ago, Johnny Irion was putting the finishing touches on his new album when he realized that he could use some harmony vocals. So he called Mike Mills, who met him at a mutual friend’s studio in Georgia, and they spent an afternoon singing together.
“I just love Johnny’s worldview,” says Mills, who ended up on two tracks from Sleeping Soldiers of Love, out Aug. 9. “There is a kindness and a positivity to it that I really enjoy, especially in these potentially dark times in which we live.

Farewell to the great Martin Phillipps, the New Zealand indie-rock pioneer of the Chills. He was one of the most brilliant songwriters of his era, with a string of Eighties and Nineties guitar classics: “Pink Frost,” “I Love My Leather Jacket,” “Heavenly Pop Hit,” “The Great Escape,” so many more. Phillipps had battled liver disease for years and recently entered a Dunedin hospital, but his unexpected death, at only 61, is a real loss. His tunes were full of alienation and misery, yet with his own distinct touch of human warmth.

Sometimes a change will do you good. After nearly 15 years of recording and performing as Mike and the Moonpies, the Texas country group led by singer-songwriter Mike Harmeier shot for the moon and jettisoned their snack-cake name, choosing to rebrand as Silverada. To some fans, it seemed unnecessary: What was wrong with the old name, after all, and why now?
The answer lies in the self-titled Silverada, the band’s first album since promoters were forced to update their marquees. While all of the hallmarks that made the Moonpies such...

Wilco is the band who loves you. To prove it, the indie vets are selling several instruments and other pieces of used gear on their newly updated official Reverb store. Starting July 18th, you can pick up guitars, effects pedals, and signed memorabilia previously owned by Jeff Tweedy and the gang.
This batch of gear — which includes a rare Wurlitzer Mks-470 six-keyboard organ — is just the latest example of what Wilco and Reverb have dubbed “The Official Wilco Loft Reverb Shop,” as the two have collaborated in the past to sell other notable items that had been lying around in Wilco’s possession.

Wilco have announced a new EP, Hot Sun Cool Shroud, set to release on June 28th to coincide with the band’s Solid Sound Festival in Massachusetts.
Arriving via dBpm Records, Hot Sun Cool Shroud will offer six new songs recorded by Wilco during the sessions for their 2023 album, Cousins. According to frontman Jeff Tweedy, the EP has a “summertime-after-dark kind of feeling. It starts off pretty hot, like heat during the day, has some instrumentals on it that are a little agitated and uncomfortable, and ends with a cooling breeze.”

Continuing, Tweedy explained, “There are tracks on Hot Sun Cool Shroud that are more aggressive and angular than anything we’ve put out in a while, and a song about love melting you like ice cream into a puddle of sugary soup. All the pieces of summer, including the broody cicadas.”

“Drank someone else’s juice and left only the rind,” Katie Crutchfield boasts on her excellent new Waxahatchee album, Tigers Blood. She’s got a right to sound cocky. The long-time indie-rock underdog hero won herself a lot of new fans with Saint Cloud, her 2020 breakthrough hit, going for a laid-back style of heartland rock & roll twang. But Tigers Blood is even more rugged and confident, a master storyteller fully aware she’s on a hot streak. She sings about adult romance, struggling for sobriety, the day-to-day work of holding...

Sean Ono Lennon may have initially rejected the astrology his family embraced growing up, but when it came to his new album, it felt like the very stars were against him. “I just felt like there was too much cosmic interference,” he tells Rolling Stone of Asterisms, a genreless wash of instrumental music that flirts with jazz, rock, and electronic. Monday, January 8th, would’ve been David Bowie’s 77th birthday. To mark the occasion, Wilco has shared their rendition of Bowie’s 1969 hit, “Space Oddity.”

Wilco surprised patrons of Poor David’s Pub in Dallas with an impromptu open mic night set.
While driving to Dallas for a show the following night as part of their ongoing U.S. tour, Wilco (per Jambase) saw the posting for the open mic and decided to stop in. The group performed without multi-instrumentalist Pat Sansone, but were billed on the sign-up sheet as Glenn Kotche & Friends, named after the band’s drummer.
The band’s 11-song set pulled heavily from their country-tinged first two albums, including cuts like “Too Far Apart” and “Passenger Side” from 1995’s A.M. and “Far, Far Away” from 1996’s Being There. They also delivered covers of Stoney Edwards’ country classic “She’s My Rock,” Texas native Doug Sahm’s “Give Back the Key to My Heart,” and “Tonight I’ll Be Staying Here With You” from Bob Dylan’s Nashville Skyline.

Wilco have released their 13th studio album Cousin, out now via their own dBpm Records.
Produced by Cate Le Bon, Cousin marks the first Wilco album helmed by an outside producer since 2007’s Sky Blue Sky. According to a press release, Le Bon’s influence led the band to incorporate new instruments, including saxophone, cheap Japanese guitars, and a cinematic, New Wave-style drum machine.
“The amazing thing about Wilco is they can be anything,” Le Bon said in a statement. “They’re so mercurial, and there’s this thread of authenticity that flows through everything they do, whatever the genre, whatever the feel of the record. There aren’t many bands who are able to, this deep into a successful career, successfully change things up.”
Lyrically, Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy described the album as, “this feeling of being in it and out of it at the same time.” Of the first single,...

Jeff Tweedy writes so well about his own music-making, there sometimes seems little worth adding: see his bestselling books (the annotated playlist World Within a Song: Music That Changed My Life and Life That Changed My Music is due November) and his Starship Casual Substack (Nb: the July 4 riff on Paul Simon’s “America”). But hey, outside perspective can be useful — as Cousin proves. It’s the first Wilco set since the ‘00s to use an outside producer, and it shows, in the best possible way.

We love rock & roll, and so do most moviegoers, which is why cinema is filled with heroes who get together with their friends to pound out some numbers. Whether they do it for fame and fortune or to just hang out with buddies, pop bands are inherently cinematic, tying together moving images and sound to create something spectacular. That’s particularly true of fictional groups, who often draw from real-world inspirations and transform them into moving protagonists or hated villains.
This list covers ten of the best fictional bands in cinema history. The key word here is “bands,” as we ignore solo acts, even from really good films. So Mac Sledge from Tender Mercies won’t show up, nor will Noni Jean from Beyond the Lights. Also, we’re looking at fictional groups here, so the Ramones from Rock & Roll High School don’t show up, nor do Talking Heads,...

Since 2007’s Sky Blue Sky, Wilco has settled into a more straightforward musical style defined by stripped-back, acoustic instrumentation and Jeff Tweedy’s confessional songwriting. The band’s latest, Cousin, seeks to fold Tweedy and company’s past into their present, exploring a more experimental and messy sound than their other recent releases.
This is due in no small part to Cate Le Bon’s varied production style. Cousin opens with the dense “Infinite Surprise,” whose main melodic hook is buried within layers of guitars, feedback, synths, and cacophonous strings. Tweedy’s vocals sound frailer than usual, almost frightened, which complements the track’s unsettling atmosphere. It’s perhaps the grandest opening statement to any Wilco album since Yankee Hotel Foxtrot’s “I Am Trying to Break Your Heart.”

Two weeks before Wilco drop their latest album, Cousin, the band has unveiled the title track from their upcoming studio LP.
“I’m cousin to the world,” Jeff Tweedy said of the track in a statement. “I don’t feel like I’m a blood relation, but maybe I’m a cousin by marriage. It’s this feeling of being in it and out of it at the same time.”
Wilco previously shared “Evicted” from Cousin, due out September 29, less than 18 months after the long-running indie rock outfit released their 2022 double LP Cruel Country.

Jeff Tweedy never meant to be a memoirist. “I was kind of recruited to write a book based on some agent’s idea that I might be able to write something worth reading,” he says, recalling a conversation five or more years ago. “I said, ‘Sure, I guess.’ It felt accidental.” That somewhat inauspicious beginning led to Let’s Go (So We Can Get Back), the acclaimed memoir that Tweedy published in 2018. A couple of years later, he wrote a second bestseller, How to Write One Song, encouraging readers to tap into their own creativity.

Wilco are back with a new song, “Evicted,” which will appear on their next album, Cousin, out Sept. 29.
“Evicted” is, in many ways, quintessential Wilco, with its easy but moody country-rock palette. But there are flourishes of what celebrated Welsh musician Cate Le Bon — who produced Cousin — brought to the sessions, particularly a lead guitar that reverberates with an uncanny twang.
Speaking of the song, frontman Jeff Tweedy said, “I guess I was trying to write from the point of view of someone struggling to make an argument for themself...

The shows were over, but for Phil Kaufman, the headache was just beginning. Then the road manager for the Flying Burrito Brothers, one of the bands credited with finding the common ground between rock & roll and honky-tonk country, Kaufman had just returned home to Los Angeles, after some Burrito-related work in 1969. In the trunk of his Ford Country Squire station wagon were the embroidered cowboy suits the band had worn onstage and on the cover of its first album, The Gilded Place of Sin. Named after Nudie Cohn, the...

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we tackle comedy on the heels of “The Bear’s” Season 2 drop.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! Or should I say, “Yes, chef”? We’re typing right in the middle of the Emmy nominations voting period, so every sentence counts — at least for a few more days. But we’re also typing on the day after “The Bear” Season 2 dropped all its episodes on Hulu. We’ve talked about this show many times already — including this week with our voices — and it was well positioned for numerous Emmy nominations before Season 2 debuted on Thursday. But having watched most of the episodes already — I know you finished — I’m wondering if “The Bear” Season 1 might get a slight boost with Emmy voters...

On paper, Rodney Crowell and Jeff Tweedy seem like an almost too-perfect pairing. Crowell once positioned himself as an alternative to the Nashville machine but, over the last 50 years, has become one of the town’s most accomplished and revered songwriters, while Tweedy is the consummate music nerd with a predilection for outsiders and a longstanding reverence for the classic country-rock of the 1960s and ’70s. Both share instincts for emotionally earnest lyrics and expanding the sonic terrain of traditional folk and blues.
On The Chicago Sessions, named after the Wilco Loft in the Windy City where the album was produced by Tweedy, Crowell’s delight and comfort in working with a kindred spirit is readily apparent. His recent efforts, including 2017’s Close Ties and 2021’s Triage, trend darker than his earlier work, showcasing the deepening crags of his weathered voice on songs about mortality and societal ills. Conversely, right...

It’s been a dreadful year — Ok, few years — for romcoms. This year gave us Shotgun Wedding, a J.Lo-starring smorgasbord about a destination wedding overrun by pirates; You People, Kenya Barris’ tone-deaf interracial-dating romcom whose big kiss was faked by CGI; and Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher’s Your Place or Mine, with leads that spent close to the entire movie on opposite sides of the country and had zero chemistry. Enter Ghosted, which is so dreadful it makes the aforementioned films look like When Harry Met Sally by comparison.

Jeff Tweedy fans were treated to an extra serving of the artist on Late Night with Seth Meyers on Wednesday night. After the frontman sat down with the comedian for an interview, he and his buddies in Wilco hit the stage to perform their song “Tired of Taking It Out on You.”
Released as the second single from Wilco’s 20222 double album Cruel Country, “Tired of Taking It Out on You” reflects how we as a society treat each other. To that end, the group’s subdued performance accompanied Tweedy’s contemplative lyrics. Watch Wilco run through “Tired of Taking It Out on You” below.
In Tweedy’s chat with Meyers, however, he decided to take it out on Late Night bandleader Fred Armisen for owing his wife Sue Miller “a lot of money.” Armisen got his big break while opening for Wilco doing standup after he was hired to...

Brian Cox and Alan Cumming become honorary Spice Girls in AppleTV+’s first look at their upcoming Carpool Karaoke: The Series episode.
The Scottish actors and longtime friends are taking the wheel and will be co-hosting the award-winning show on March 31. In a teaser clip, the Succession star gets candid with his friend.
“Now you see, there’s one thing I am really quite envious of what you’ve done,” Cox tells Cumming. “What would that be?” the Schmigadoon! star replies. “Well,” Cox begins and then looks mysteriously to the backseat to see if anyone will overhear him, “Spice Girls.” To which his friend responds, “Seriously? You’re a Spice Girls fan?”
“I’m a closet Spice Girls fan,” Cox says before Cumming kicks off their sing-along with “If You Wanna Be My Lover.”
After about 30 seconds of semi-off-key singing, the Succession actor chimes in again, saying, “I’m so glad that’s over.

While most contemporary music documentaries fall into the realm of self-produced hagiography, no one will be making that charge about “Jason Isbell: Running With Our Eyes Closed,” a clear-eyes/hearts-full documentary coming from HBO Max documentary that had its world premiere at the Grammy Museum.
At a Q&a with Isbell and director Sam Jones following the screening of the film, which begins streaming April 7, moderator Colin Hanks, a big Isbell fan, asked the doc’s star: “What was it about this that made you go, ‘Yeah, I’m gonna do a doc,’ and really make yourself a little bit more raw than maybe you had even in your songs?”
“It’s because I didn’t know what was about to happen,” responded Isbell. “The whole reason I did this was because I was not informed of the consequences of doing this.” He was half-joking. “I just told Sam before...

Wilco are heading back to Mexico this December for their Sky Blue Sky Festival. They’ve unveiled the full lineup for its 2023 iteration today, which includes Father John Misty, Sylvan Esso, and Lucinda Williams.
Wilco themselves, of course, are also featured on the lineup for Sky Blue Sky 2023, where they’ll play three shows throughout the four-day festival at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya. Other notable names on the poster include Waxahatchee, Kevin Morby, Built to Spill, Bartees Strange, and Cate Le Bon, as well as a solo set from Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy.
“Sky Blue Sky is something we feel lucky we get to do, and look forward to every time we put one together,” Tweedy writes in a press release. “We love sharing music with our friends, and we love getting together with everyone in the sun. It’s nice to step out from under the clouds every now and then.
