Alan Kalter, the “voice” of CBS’ “Late Show With David Letterman” for most of its run, has died, Variety has confirmed. He was 78.
According to Rabbi Joshua Hammerman of Temple Beth El in Stamford, Conn., Kalter died at Stamford Hospital, with wife Peggy and his daughters Lauren Hass and Diana Binger at his side.
Kalter took over as Letterman’s announcer on Sept. 5, 1995, replacing Bill Wendell, who had retired. Kalter remained with “Late Show” until Letterman ended his tenure in May 2015.
Although the gig centered on announcing the guests at the top of each show and other various introduction elements, Kalter soon became a pivotal part of “Late Show,” often in scripted segments in which he satirically flew off the handle and stormed off stage; played himself as deviant and creepy; and often being the butt of jokes.

After 105 years as the Cleveland Indians, the MLB team unveiled a new name Friday, the Cleveland Guardians, to sighs of relief from fans ready to leave the culturally insensitive branding in the past - but mostly to “Guardians of the Galaxy” jokes.
The Ohio MLB team announced its name change in a slick new promotional video that featured narration from Tom Hanks and a score courtesy of the Black Keys. In addition to the name, the organization also introduced a new logo, a baseball flanked by a G with a pair of wings. The video's sincere tone was undercut by one big elephant in the room though. Actually, make that one big anthropomorphic tree.

Fox’s “Son of Zorn” may be the most original idea of any TV show this fall.
The animated “Zorn,” voiced by Jason Sudeikis, is the self-described “Defender of Zephyria, Conqueror of the tribes of Agon, decapitator of the dark herdsmen of Grith. Now he’s moving to Orange County, where he hopes to reconnect with his estranged 17-year-old son Alan (Johnny Pemberton) and his ex-wife Edie (Cheryl Hines). Throwing a wrench in that plan: Edie’s new fiance, the sensitive psychology professor Craig (Tim Meadows). Realizing his son hasn’t grown up the way he’d like, Zorn rents an apartment, gets a job and decides to stick around in suburbia.
For our new podcast “Turn It On,” IndieWire talked to “Son of Zorn” showrunner Sally Bradford McKenna and director Eric Appel about the challenges of producing the animated/live-action comedy hybrid, and how the show isn’t as different as you’d think.

Sharknado 2: The Second One premiered on SyFy Wednesday night, and the campy, B-movie sequel inspired a huge array of equally entertaining tweets.
Many people in the Twitterverse live-tweeted the premiere of Sharknado 2: The Second One, inspired by the Twitter frenzy that took place during the premiere of the original Sharknado.
It has been several minutes since a shark did a thing. This Is Unacceptable. #Sharknado2
— Wil Wheaton (@wilw) July 31, 2014
Some tweeted about the numerous – and ridiculous – celebrity cameos, which included Kelly Osbourne, Andy Dick and Today’s Matt Lauer and Al Roker.
#Sharknado2 best cameo so far has been Meryl Streep as all the sharks

Al Roker deserves an Emmy for explaining the physical properties of a Sharknado without laughing. #Sharknado2TheSecondOne #Sharknado2

I can suspend disbelief for a sharknado, but not for Billy Ray Cyrus as a surgeon. #sharknado2 pic.

What looked like an unpleasant face off in the stands in Toronto stole the spotlight just moments after Boston Bruins center David Krejci scored the game-winning goal in overtime against the Maple Leafs on Wednesday night. The seemingly awkward moment culminated with actress Elisha Cuthbert, fiancee of Leafs defenceman Dion Phaneuf, rolling her eyes while looking at April Reimer, the wife of Leafs goalie James Reimer.
After a mistake by Phaneuf set up the goal scored by the Bruins against her husband, April turned around and flashed an icy glare over her shoulder in the general direction of the star of "Happy Endings." Cuthbert responded with that epic eye roll. The exchanged glances immediately sparked conversation on social media, particularly in Ottawa and amongst those who watch "Happy Endings."

Exclusive: I’ve just learned that one of the longtime writers and producers of Late Show With David Letterman, Matt Roberts, is becoming the new head writer effective immediately. The previous head writers Justin and Eric Stangel will remain as writers and producers with the show but also get a fat new multiyear development deal with Worldwide Pants, the production company run by Letterman and Rob Burnett. ”The Stangel brothers are going to remain with the show as part of the deal because we need them,” Rob Burnett just told me. ”These guys are as good as it gets.” The twosome have had an unusally long and successful 14-year run as Letterman’s head writers and now will turn a lot of their attention to coming up with TV shows in any format for Worldwide Pants. “For people like this super valuable to the show, this deal keeps these guys from walking,...

Damon Lindelof does not doubt the intelligence of his audience. His primary methodology for creation is collaboration. He believes in non-linear storytelling and the brains it takes to keep up. The 38-year-old writer expects questions from fans and often finds salvation in the unanswered ones, or so he explained to a full house Thursday night at the 92Y Tribeca.

So another year has passed and its time for another round of awards for the people who make the television shows we like to watch.
Television is interesting these days. Never before have we seen such great, creative output. Never before have we been subjected to such drivel. It all gets paraded before us tonight, as we watch the 61st Primetime Emmy Awards (handed out, it should be noted, by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences) on CBS, CTV in Canada.
8:00
Interesting that the Emmys chose to introduce the 2009 edition of the Primetime awards by harkening back to the early days of television. Especially as the business of television has never been closer to a complete collapse. Oh, announcer who is trying so hard to sound like a TV host from the '50s. You don't sound at all like you're a three pack-a-day smoker.
