I will describe him as I see him. He is a great, soft jelly thing. Smoothly rounded, with a huge mouth.
Ruben Fleischer's 2018 film "Venom" features a truly strange creature at its center. The film's main character is Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) a reporter from San Francisco who has fallen on hard times. Unexpectedly, he is attacked by a living blob of alien glop from beyond the stars, and the tar-like being seeps into his skin and occupies his body. The being, calling itself Venom, begins to communicate with Eddie psychically, encouraging him to hurt others and to generally be more reckless and daring. Occasionally, the glop seeps out from Eddie's body and wraps itself around his exterior, transforming them both into a slick, goo-skinned humanoid monster with massive puffy eyes and hundreds of razor-sharp teeth. In human form, Venom loves to bite off people's heads and eat them.

Method Man’s star power was evident from the moment listeners heard him on Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), especially the album’s lone solo single, which carried his name. During our recent Zoom call, he tells me in his gravelly baritone that he’s still likely to listen to that project before the rest of his catalog. But it was only the beginning of a legendary career that continues well into his fifties. Albums like 1994’s Tical and 1999’s Blackout (with close friend Redman), as well as New York rap...

“The Sims” are coming to the big screen.
A movie based on the popular gaming franchise is currently in development at Amazon MGM Studios, Electronic Arts confirmed on Tuesday. “Loki” director Kate Herron will direct from a script that she co-wrote with Briony Redman. LuckyChap and Vertigo Entertainment will produce alongside Electronic Arts’s “The Sims” team. Herron and Redman will executive produce.
While the synopsis of the movie hasn’t been revealed, the games were life simulation games that first debuted in 2000. They served as a spin-off of the popular game “SimCity,” which came out back in 1989. You take control of characters (the titular Sims) and guide them through their life. The most recent expansion pack, “The Sims 4: Lovestruck,” was released earlier this year.

Thursday, Aug. 8, marked nine years since the untimely passing of Sean Price, a one-of-one Mc whose presence still looms large in the rap landscape. Few artists possessed his combo of technical precision, unbridled aggression, and side-splitting humor displayed on projects like his Heltah Skeltah work, alongside Rockness Monstah, and solo classics Monkey Barz, Jesus Price Supastar, and Mic Tyson. Chicago rapper Vic Spencer became a friend of the cult-hero Mc in his later years, and decided to pay homage with The Apes That Was Left Behind, a project released on...

The episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? covering Seed of Chucky was Written and Edited by Jaime Vasquez, Narrated by Tyler Nichols, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Along with most Horror franchises that skyrocketed in the ’80s, Child’s Play had plummeted by the mid ’90s. But in 1996, Scream became a pivotal moment for the genre. Wes Craven’s self-referential slasher helped revive mainstream interest in Horror. And it gave birth to a new wave of slashers that featured characters with smarter dialogue, who made less stupid decisions (for the most part), and delivered the all-important meta humor. That wave included a bride, mostly dressed in black leather. Bride of Chucky checked all the boxes of the updated slasher formula, especially when it came to the satire. In the opening scene of Bride, you can see Freddy’s glove, Leatherface’s chainsaw,...

Warning: Contains spoilers for ‘Rogue’
This first series of Doctor Who’s latest reboot has been a lot of things — silly (‘Space Babies’), spectacular (‘The Devil’s Chord’), intense (‘Boom’), scary (‘73 Yards’), and, by the end of last week’s Black Mirror aping ‘Dot And Bubble’, pretty damn bleak even too. But not since Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson’s first outing as the Doctor and Ruby Sunday, ‘The Church On Ruby Road’, have we had an episode as outrageously fun Regency-era romp ‘Rogue’. Poured from the pens of guest writers Kate Herron and Briony Redman, this week’s adventure is good old-fashioned monster-of-the-week Who with a deliciously queer twist.
Leaving Finetime well behind, ‘Rogue’ finds the Doctor and Ruby in early 19th-century Bath, enjoying a ball at the stately mansion home of the Duchess of Pemberton (a suitably hissable Indira Varma). All britches, bodices, “You cad!” admonishments, and anachronistic...

The Roots Picnic, held yearly in Philadelphia since 2008, is a special kind of music festival. The lineup this year covered a wide spectrum of hip-hop and R&b, plus country, go-go, and more, with the Roots’ own omnivorous musicality as the guiding force. Daily crowds of 30,000 made the pilgrimage to Fairmount Park to soak up the sun and sounds on June 1 and 2. There were surprise guests (Ghostface! Common! Freeway! Lloyd! Musiq Soulchild!), outstanding collaborations, a couple of disappointing no-shows (Cam’Ron, you were missed), and tons more performances across three stages.

Loki director and EP Kate Herron is to co-write an upcoming episode of Doctor Who featuring Ncuti Gatwa.
Herron will write the episode with long-time collaborator Briony Redman, an actor and comedian whose work includes the Welsh crime-comedy Pont Brec with Damian Evans and award-winning short film Forget-Me-Not.
Herron is the latest big creative name to board the upcoming season from Russell T. Davies. She exec-produced and directed the entire Marvel Loki series and has also directed episodes of Sex Education, which Gatwa stars in.
Herron and Redman have collaborated on a range of work together including comic The Storkening as well as TV and film projects including the sci-fi Miss Universe and short film Smear.
Gatwa will take over as the 15th Doctor next year, following three specials in which David Tennant will return to briefly become the 14th Doctor.

Throughout horror genre history, there have been numerous examples of characters crossing over into one another's universes, continuity, and canon. While cinematic universes featuring characters from other genres are all the rage these days (especially with regard to action and comic book superheroes), there remains something special about the horror crossover.
For one thing, horror was the first genre to birth a cinematic universe long before it became a buzzworthy term, thanks to Universal Pictures' "Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man" in 1943. For another, a horror crossover typically isn't like a Marvel Cinematic Universe film, where heroes from their own separate franchises team up to hang out, crack wise, and eventually take on a doomsday villain. Instead, it's all about the thematic weight of not one, but two...

For another, a horror crossover typically isn't like a Marvel Cinematic Universe film, where heroes from their own separate franchises team up to hang out, crack wise, and eventually take on a doomsday villain. Instead, it's all about the thematic weight of not one, but two...

The murder of Hannibal star Hugh Dancy’s great-grandmother is the subject of the true crime podcast Ghost Story, which is set to launch on October 23rd and will be available on Wondery+ and Amazon Music. Dancy takes part in the podcast, along with family members, ghost hunters, psychic mediums, and homicide detectives.
According to Variety, Ghost Story will tell us all about Dr. Naomi Dancy, who was found dead in 1937 after being shot twice in the face as she slept. A synopsis describes the show as a jaw-dropping tale of a haunting, which becomes a murder investigation, which leads to a family drama.
In addition to playing Will Graham on three seasons of Hannibal, Hugh Dancy has had roles in films and TV shows like David Copperfield, Black Hawk Down, King Arthur, Basic Instinct 2, Blood and Chocolate, The Jane Austen Book Club, Martha Marcy May Marlene, Our Idiot Brother,...

The 40th anniversary 4K-cut of Stop Making Sense continues to make a lot of cents.
In the wake of the Talking Heads A24 re-release racking up the biggest grossing Imax live event ever with close to $641K, we’re hearing that showtimes for this weekend’s Imax run are already selling out.
Move over, Barbie (which is getting her first release in Imax this Friday for one week), because you’re going to have to contend with the Talking Heads in the house, not Ken.
Originally the re-release of the 1984 Jonathan Demme concert film was bound to run in around 150 Imax auditoriums, now it’s 300. That’s a nice appetizer for any pop rock aficionado waiting in the lobby for the Taylor Swift: Eras Tour concert to start. Stop Making Sense expands again next Friday, Sept. 29.

Slasher films are known for their one-liners, both the badass and the embarrassing. Dr. Loomis in the "Halloween" series, Freddy Krueger in the "A Nightmare on Elm Street" series, Ghostface in the numerous "Scream" flicks, Pinhead in the "Hellraiser" films, and just about everything Chucky has ever said throughout his franchise have all birthed quotes as memorable as the characters who say them. In the delightfully silly "Freddy vs Jason," one of the most infamous lines is not spoken by either slasher icon or even the film's final girl, but by the secondary character Kia, played by Kelly Rowland of Destiny's Child.
When Kia comes face to face with Freddy Krueger, she doesn't cower in fear -- she mocks him. Freddy Krueger thrives on fear, and by choosing to humiliate him instead, she defangs him quite a bit. She spends much of the movie being mouthy to everyone anyway, so...

Editors’ Note: This interview is the first in a series commemorating the 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop on August 11
“I mean, there were people who used to look at us at that time and say, ‘Where is the band?’” recalls LL Cool J of hip-hop’s early years and the reaction audiences would have.
As the genre hits its 50th birthday on August 11, no one is asking where the band is anymore. The culture that has emerged out of what Kool Herc was doing that night in 1973 in the rec room of 1520 Sedgwick Ave. in the West Bronx is the most popular musical genre on the planet.
One of the first mainstream stars of hip-hop, LL Cool J himself has come a long way from dropping his “I Need a Beat” single back in 1984. A multi-Grammy winner, a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and the first rapper to receive a Kennedy Center Honor,...

The 2023 BET Awards honored the 50th anniversary of hip-hop with dozens of performances that played like a musical family reunion as pioneers of the genre blazed the stage during a hostless but party-filled show held during the writers strike.
The Sugarhill Gang, Big Daddy Kane, Mc Lyte, Doug E. Fresh, Erick Sermon and Keith Murray performed Sunday at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, celebrating rap music and honoring its roots as well as its domination in pop culture.
Ja Rule, Red Man, E-40, Master P, Fat Joe, Remy Ma, Styles P, T.I., Fabolous, Trick Daddy, Trina, Uncle Luke and Skillz hit the stage, helping the four-hour-show flow during the writers strike, which several presenters acknowledged before giving out awards, including Grammy-winning singer Muni Long.
“Let’s take a moment to acknowledge and stand in solidarity with the artists who make us laugh, cry and, most important, think — our Writers Guild of America family.

Shaquille O’Neal is returning to rap.
The NBA legend who released four hip-hop albums in the ‘90s will drop a new single called “King Talk” on May 2 in celebration of the NBA Playoffs. It is a collaboration with Ghanian-American rapper Blackway.
O’Neal first teased the song on Feb. 7 on his Twitter, Instagram and TikTok in an animation video that celebrated LeBron James passing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to become the NBA’s all-time leading scorer.
The 51-year-old entertainer had success in the ‘90s with music, including the platinum-selling album Shaq Diesel, released in 1993. It featured the gold-selling singles “What’s Up Doc? (Can We Rock)” and “(I Know I Got) Skillz” — which both cracked the Top 40 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart — as well as collaborations with late A Tribe Called Quest rapper Phife Dawg, Def Jef and Fu-Schnickens. Some of the tracks were produced by Epmd’s Erick Sermon and Tribe’s Ali Shaheed Muhammad.

Dark secrets have been controlling all the action so far in "Power Book II: Ghost" season three, but episode five marks what showrunner Brett Mahoney calls the "true turning point" that's put everyone on notice.
The episode, titled "No More Second Chances," picks up after the shooting death of Detective Kevin Whitman (Jeff Hephner) in Monet's (Mary J. Blige) house, with the feds snooping around on suspicion that her self-defense excuse is really a murder cover-up. There's also the fact that Monet has finally figured out who killed her son Zeke: her husband, Lorenzo (Berto Colón). Then, on the other side of "Power Book II," Tariq (Michael Rainey Jr.), his girlfriend, Effie (Alix Lapri), and partner-in-crime, Brayden (Gianni Paolo), get roped into a mess overseas during their business trip to Italy, as the latter gets kidnapped while on a mission for their new drug connect, Noma (Caroline Chikezie).

The Power Universe loves to occasionally sprinkle in Easter eggs, and in the fourth episode of "Power Book II: Ghost"'s third season, longtime "Power" viewers spotted a familiar face - someone who could become a game changer later in the series.
In the episode, titled "The Land of Opportunity," we meet a DEA agent named Angel "Junior" Young (Kevin Rodriguez), who's aiding Detective Blanca's (Monique Gabriela Curnen) latest investigation. The two are shown at a crime-scene aftermath of a motel shootout between the Tejada clan - Lorenzo (Berto Colon), Cane (Woody McClain), and Dru (Lovell Adams-Gray) - and some arms dealers, one of whom happens to be a criminal informant for Blanca. Junior makes a brief appearance as he explains to Blanca that her C.I. has been shot and transported to a hospital and is in critical condition. Another week, another major player on "Power Book II: Ghost" meets a tragic fate - though many viewers probably saw this one coming. This time, the hit "Power" spinoff bid farewell to the nuisance that is Detective Kevin Whitman (Jeff Hephner) after he overstepped his boundaries one too many times with Monet (Mary J. Blige).
Ever since the death of Monet's nephew son Zeke (Daniel Bellomy), Whitman has been hot on her tracks trying to pin a murder on her that he thinks she committed, aka Carrie Milgram's (which she committed for sleeping around with Zeke). Note: Carrie and Whitman have history together, too. Whitman, a too-dedicated-to-his-job detective, has also been working with federal prosecutor Jenny Sullivan (Paton Ashbrook) and Detective Blanca Rodriguez (Monique Gabriela Curnen) to aid their Rico case that could get Tariq (Michael Rainey Jr.), Brayden (Gianni Paolo), and the Tejadas - Cane (Woody McClain), Dru (Lovell Adams-Gray...

"Power Book II: Ghost" is known for throwing viewers a curveball (or several) now and then, and season three, which premiered on March 17, is no exception. So far, new characters have been introduced, while one has reappeared after being seemingly killed off. But viewers are saddened to see that one familiar face hasn't returned for the new season.
Season two of the hit Starz drama introduced defense attorney Davis MacLean's (Method Man) brother, Theo Rollins, who's in prison for taking the fall for a manslaughter charge for the crooked lawyer. That season, Theo was played by Redman, the rap icon and well-known Method Man collaborator.
Method Man - who famously starred with Redman in 2001's "How High" and collaborated with him on the "Blackout!" album series - reflected on his reunion with Redman in "Power Book II: Ghost" in a recent interview with Vibe Magazine, crediting "Power" creator and former...

The rapper Logic has been unabashed about his love for Frank Sinatra, even adopting the nom de plume “Young Sinatra” for some of his mixtape releases. But he’s been just as up-front with his adoration for the man many consider the real young Sinatra: Seth MacFarlane, who, besides irreverently having created several of the world’s most popular animated comedy series, has released seven reverent albums of standards culled from the Great American Songbook.
Logic was finally able to bring his MacFarlane fandom to the ultimate fruition by enlisting the animation mogul to croon the soothing bridge of an otherwise typically hyperactive new hip-hop song, “Self-Medication.” Although not a single per se, it’s a track that’s gotten significant streaming boosts as Logic’s (and MacFarlane’s) fans have discovered it since the late February release of the rapper’s new album, “College Park.” It’s all of...

The Grammy Awards celebrated the 50th anniversary of hip-hop Sunday night with a 14-minute performance, packed with luminaries from the genre’s past and present.
More than 20 of hip-hop’s biggest artists ascended onto the Grammys stage for an exciting cross-generational medley that became one of the highlights of this year’s awards ceremony. Fans across the world, and spectators in attendance (like Jay-Z), were enthralled as they watched hip-hop’s pioneers and rising stars both get the showcase they deserved on “music’s biggest night.” Nowhere else have we...

Well, we’re past what is considered the worst (bitter cold and snowy) months of Winter (for some parts of the country), which may get many folks thinking about a nice getaway. Y’know an out-of-the-way place, miles from the bustling city where you can recharge and re-connect with your partner, and maybe your expanding family. You can almost smell the embers and feel the warmth from a fireplace in that cabin deep in the forest, yards away from a clear blue lake. Ah, but your pessimistic side may wonder about predators. Could that twig-snap ending the quiet be bears, wolves, wildcats, or, worst of all, people? In this new thriller, they’re wanting more than money or your vehicle. And since a particular “name-above-the-title” director helms this, we know that we’re in for lots of turns and “twists” when we hear a Knock At The Cabin.

John Sturges’ Road Show comedy western has more in common with 1941 than The Magnificent Seven, but Kino has MGM’s new remaster and the visual result is spectacular. The Ultra Panavision 70 epic is still a favorite of fans of out-of-control Hollywood filmmaking. Burt Lancaster, Lee Remick, Jim Hutton, Pamela Tiffin and a huge cast lead the charge for a convoy of frontier whisky. It’s all in a fine spirit of madcap fun. . . so where are the big laughs?
