- British stage actor, who got his start in pantomime, music hall comedy and the provincial theatre. In films from 1915, he was usually cast as the romantic lead in melodramas. After World War I, Newall formed a production company, Lucky Cat Films (which later became George Clark Productions, based at Beaconsfield), in conjunction with cameraman George Clark. He directed many of his own films from 1920, also occasionally sidelining as scenario writer. He often co-starred his later wife, the actress Ivy Duke.
