This is the Pure Movies review of Invictus, directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Morgan Freeman, Matt Damon, Tony Kgoroge, Patrick Mofokeng, Matt Stern and Julian Lewis Jones. “I am the master of my fate/I am the captain of my soul.” The last two lines of Henley’s famous “Invictus”, the poem that Nelson Mandela kept on a scrap of paper during his incarceration at Robben Island, do well to sum up Clint Eastwood’s latest film of the same name. Morgan Freeman stars as Mandela, and addresses the challenges he faced in a post-Apartheid South Africa still largely divided by race and class. Matt Damon plays Springboks captain Francois Pienaar who is desperate to build the moral and confidence of his team in the run-up to the 1995 Rugby World Cup, knowing their chances are slim.

Chicago – It’s difficult to imagine an awards season without Clint Eastwood. Ever since 2003’s “Mystic River,” he’s released all of his directorial efforts during the last months of the year. Sometimes his films deserve to be contenders (“Million Dollar Baby,” “Letters From Iwo Jima”), and sometimes they don’t. “Invictus” is Eastwood’s most unimaginative Oscar bait yet.
Morgan Freeman is the perfect actor to play Nelson Mandela…too perfect, in fact. There must be countless great actors, unknown to mainstream moviegoers, who could’ve knocked this role out of the park. Freeman is certainly one of our great actors, but he’s played this type of wise, contemplative, larger-than-life role so often that it’s become a cliché. When he played God in “Bruce Almighty,” the casting seemed inevitable. That may be why Mandela himself couldn’t think of any actor to play himself onscreen, other than Freeman.

The players: Director: Clint Eastwood, Writer: Anthony Peckham, Cast: Morgan Freeman, Matt Damon, Tony Kgoroge, Patrick Mofokeng, Matt Stern
Facts of interest: Based on John Carlin's book.
The plot: The film tells the true story of how Nelson Mandela tried to unite his country with the help of South Africa's rugby team.
Our quick thoughts: Clint Eastwood’s “Invictus” keeps things simple in telling the true story of how Nelson Mandela tried to reunite his country through rugby, but the film is nonetheless a fascinating big-screen experience and without doubt one of the best movies I’ve seen this year. Intriguing, emotional and beautifully shot and acted, this is an instant winner.

We all know that Ving Rhames has some serious acting chops, but that he hasn't been able to use them with roles in films like Day of the Dead and I Now Pronounce You, Chuck and Larry. But, it is not to late to excercise those abilities: he's just signed on to play the lead role in the stage to screen adaptation of Master Harold... and the Boys, the Athol Fugard play. It is now Rhames' time to shine, he has 12 films in post-production and one completed, at least one of them has to be good, doesn't it? Rhames will take on the role of a dignified waiter who befriends a young child (played by Freddie Highmore) who he becomes a father figure to. Golden Horn (that is the South African Emmy) winner Patrick Mofokeng will co-star as Willie, a more laid-back waiter who is into ballroom dancing. Hr reports...
