As the film’s opening credits proclaim: Nic Cage is The Surfer, but he’s struggling to catch a wave. Securing his family’s future with a seafront house on a glorious beach in Western Australia is his main ambition. There’s just one issue: the locals aren’t friendly. Spearheaded by their cultish leader Scally (Julian McMahon), the jumped-up blokes who claim the beach as their own would rather knock your teeth out than let you surf. However, ‘The Surfer’ is determined, he’ll just have to suffer first.
Unfortunately, so will we: The audience.
I have a theory about Nic Cage and his relationship with the filmmakers that cast him. You see, the man operates on multiple levels of ‘Cage-ness’ based exclusively on what is asked of him. For example, in Face/Off or Con Air, we probably have near total levels of Cage-ness. Even this year, we saw...

There had been rumblings about Robert Downey Jr. returning to the MCU heading into last month's San Diego Comic-Con, but none of us expected him to be announced as Doctor Doom in place of Iron Man!
The Oscar-winner first suited up as Tony Stark in 2008 and, five years after bidding farewell to the Armoured Avenger in Avengers: Endgame, he'll transform into one of the Marvel Universe's greatest villains in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
We completely understand why the decision to cast Downey as Victor Von Doom has proven somewhat divisive but now have some thoughts on why it's actually a good idea. In fact, we'd say this casting decision is the best one Marvel Studios could have made.
Find out why we think Downey as Doom is the right thing for the Multiverse Saga by clicking the "Next"/"View List" buttons below.

Okay all you music biopic fans, just keep reading the title past the first two words. This should give you a hint that it’s not the “rags to riches” tale of the 60s talented titanic trio from Motown. Actually, this story is set quite a distance from Detroit. way down in North Carolina. And yes, much of the flashback sequences are set in the 1960s, but the title refers to a nickname given to three childhood friends. And if you’d guess that the ploy revolves around their “ups and downs”, romances and challenges, well you’re perhaps familiar with the novel this film is based upon…or you picked up the gist of it from the poster. So, get those tissues ready to wipe away the tears inspired by The Supremes At Earl’S All-you-can-eat.
After a brief flash-forward, the film focused on three middle-aged women strolling toward the aforementioned eatery.

Don’t you hate the awkward silence that happens when someone has been recast as your favorite movie character?
No explanation. No plot twist is given in which your character returns to save the day and thwarts the impostor.
Instead, you just have to deal with it and accept New Guy Here as the recast hero.
(Warner Bros./Screenshot)
Sometimes, the awkward silence is unbearable, and you hate the rest of the movie because of this terrible choice of recasting.
But sometimes, they get it right, and we’re all forced to begrudgingly agree that this new interpretation of our favorite character was brilliant.
Not all 11 performances were brilliant. However, when the recasting was first announced, each one divided moviegoers. Let’s consider each one and whether the recast was a Win or Fail.

Doctor Doom reigns supreme as one of Marvel’s most fearsome and formidable antagonists. Recently, he’s been creating waves not just in the comic book world but in the digital universe of Fortnite’s Chapter 5 Season 4 event, ‘Absolute Doom’.
Unlike his past cinematic missteps, where he often fell short of his formidable comic book self, Doom is finally getting the villainous spotlight he deserves. In Fortnite, the character harnesses Pandora’s Box and recruits notorious villains like Emma Frost and Mysterio, transforming him into a true force of chaos.

Past Fantastic Four films, however, have struggled to capture Doom’s essence, with 2005’s Julian McMahon and 2015’s Toby Kebbell both failing to deliver the menacing presence of the legendary ruler of Latveria. However, Fortnite’s portrayal is a breath of fresh air, presenting a Doom that’s both powerful and captivating.

As so much media loves to remind us, life is not our hardships but the friends we’ve made along the way. Edward Kelsey Moore’s novel The Supremes At Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat is a charming examination of that maxim, balancing humor and heartbreak so as to reaffirm the value of keeping on.

Jessica Alba’s cinematic prowess started in her early teens, but her career escalated when she starred in James Cameron’s Dark Angel. Her portrayal of Max Guevara catapulted her to stardom, making her a top choice for every filmmaker. But her biggest break was just around the corner with Fantastic Four, where she starred as a key member of the superhero team as Sue Storm.

This year’s Sdcc was truly thrilling. Fans were treated to early footage from ‘Thunderbolts’ and ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps.’ However, the biggest announcement of the night concerned the ‘Avengers’ franchise.
Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the MCU, but not as Iron Man. Instead, he will take on the role of Doctor Doom, and reactions have been mixed. ‘Avengers: Kang Dynasty’ has been retitled ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ signaling a new primary villain for the Multiverse saga.
As I mentioned earlier, the reaction has been mixed. An IGN poll revealed that over half of the fans are unhappy with Rdj returning as a different character. Given this, we decided to explore some possible reasons why Marvel Studios chose to take this risky path, especially considering how sensitive fans are about one of the most emotional moments in the entire cinematic universe.

The tail-end of July has seen something of a defibrillator shocking some life back into Marvel. Not only has the anticipated film Deadpool & Wolverine become a massive opening and sending fans home with giddiness over some immensely deep cuts from the comic book film world, but Marvel Studios’ panel from Comic-Con has dropped some big upcoming news as well. The biggest reveal (which also seems to be kind of a controversial one) was Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the MCU, this time as the iconic villain Doctor Doom in the next Avengers entry, Doomsday.

On Saturday night, Marvel Studios took to Hall H at the San Diego Comic-Con to announce that Robert Downey Jr. will play Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
The news has received a surprisingly mixed response, largely because the Oscar-winner's portrayal of Tony Stark/Iron Man is so iconic.

Fans were stunned by the news of Robert Downey Jr. returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) to portray the villain Doctor Doom in two upcoming “Avengers” films. However, it appears that Downey’s involvement in the Marvel franchise as Doctor Doom may not be as surprising as it initially seemed.
In a video released by Marvel Entertainment last year, director Jon Favreau and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige reminisced about the making of the first MCU film, 2008’s “Iron Man.” During their discussion, Favreau revealed that Downey had previously been considered for the role of Doctor Doom, a fact that had been largely overlooked by fans.

After “Iron Man” star Robert Downey Jr. was announced to be returning to the MCU, but this time as iconic comic book villain Dr. Doom, Paltrow commented on co-star Downey’s Instagram post.
“I don’t get it, are you a baddie now?” she asked.
Apparently so! Downey will star as the character in “Avengers: Doomsday,” which is slated for a May 2026 release. Sequel film “Avengers: Secret Wars” is also already planned for 2027. Downey’s original MCU character Tony Stark Aka Iron Man died in 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame.”
“New mask, same task,” Downey said while onstage at 2024 Comic Con to announce the surprise casting. “What can I say, I like playing complicated characters.”
Joe and Anthony Russo will also return to co-direct “Doomsday.” Victor Von Doom Aka Dr. Doom originated in the “Fantastic Four” comic books.

In a surprise turn of events, Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe — this time to play Doctor Doom. The Iron Man star, who officially retired from the MCU with his character’s death in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, will play Victor von Doom, a.k.a. Dr. Doom in the next Avengers film — now officially titled Avengers: Doomsday — which is set for release in May 2026.
In addition, rumors that Shawn Levy would be directing Avengers 5 were squashed, as the Russo Brothers were officially confirmed as the directors for both Doomsday as well as the fifth Avengers movie, Secret Wars (now set to premiere in May 2027).
Originally, the fourth Avengers movie was announced as Avengers: The Kang Dynasty — a title pointing to the involvement of villainous multiverse-travelling Kang, played by Jonathan Majors. Then, in December 2023, Majors was convicted of domestic assault, and Marvel fired him from the franchise.

This article is nothing but non-stop Deadpool & Wolverine spoilers!
A key appeal to Marvel movies remains their cameos, as anyone who recognizes Stan Lee’s million-dollar smile will tell you. But Deadpool & Wolverine takes it to another level, as one would expect for Wade Wilson’s first entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe proper. Deadpool doesn’t just drag Wolverine into the fray with him for this one. No, he is bringing the whole Fox X-Men universe along for the ride, or at least as many of the B-listers and off-shoots from thereabouts that only the most hardcore of nerds or terminally online will remember.
Deadpool & Wolverine has room for MCU mainstays too. Wunmi Mosaku reprises her role as Tva agent B-15 from Loki; the Avengers show up on monitors (and in clips from older movies); and most of Deadpool’s supporting cast has a at least few scenes,...

Chris Evans’ Johnny Storm was the best thing about Tim Story’s duo of Fantastic Four films, which failed to impress the critics. Fans rewatching the film would notice that he gave a performance that didn’t remind them of his iconic Captain America role even for a second. As Human Torch, Evans gave off a cocky attitude, which aligns with the description of the character as a reckless superhero.

Since Iron Man’s death in ‘Endgame,’ a significant chapter of the MCU has concluded, leaving most fans aware that the era they knew had also ended. Despite Kevin Feige repeatedly stating that bringing Tony Stark back from the dead is off the table, fans have persistently clamored for his return.

Somewhere in the multiverse, Robert Downey Jr. is playing the villain.
After the Academy Award winner first suited up as Tony Stark in 2008’s Iron Man, director and co-star Jon Favreau revealed in a 15th anniversary retrospective of the inaugural MCU title that Downey Jr. also auditioned for Fantastic Four (2005).

Favreau praised Downey Jr. as “the puzzle piece that made it all work” in Iron Man, adding: “I remember sitting down with the guy, and I was like, ‘He’s got that spark in him in his eye and he’s ready.

Even if this seems good enough to go watch in the cinema, Searchlight is skipping theaters and sending it to Hulu directly - for streaming later...

Who's who on FBI: Most Wanted?
The oldest spinoff of the FBI series features a small but dedicated team of special agents determined to bring the most violent criminals to justice.
This show has been renewed for a sixth season, so the summer hiatus is a great time to dive into the FBI: Most Wanted cast and character guide and get to know who these people are.
A Small Cast, But A Big Change
Before getting into the cast guide, you should know that FBI: Most Wanted will rotate cast members during Season 6. This cost-saving measure means that different characters will be featured on each episode, with some missing each time.
This will impact a series like FBI: Most Wanted, which only has five regulars, far more than shows with big casts, as character disappearances will be noticeable.

Mads Mikkelsen...Cillian Murphy...Giancarlo Esposito...by now, we know you've seen the same old names suggested for the McU's Doctor Doom time and time again.
With The Fantastic Four fast approaching and rumours swirling that the Latverian dictator will appear in a post-credits scene, all signs point to us meeting the new Victor Von Doom as soon as next year. However, none of the popular decisions listed above seem like a perfect fit to us.
In this feature, we've rounded up several alternative suggestions who would each be suitably terrifying and formidable as the McU's Doom. Crucially, they're not the names you'd necessarily expect to see.
To find out who we think could square off with Mister Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch, and The Thing as a villain capable of being the next Saga's big bad, click on the "Next"/"View List" buttons below.

In The Surfer, an exploitation film set to pressure-cook, a mild-mannered man is pitted against a group who even Andrew Tate might find a touch extreme. It’s set in South Australia on fictional Luna Bay, the kind of place where if the heat doesn’t get you, something else probably will. The water shines turquoise-blue but the beaches look like scorched earth. Into this furnace arrives an unnamed man (Nicolas Cage) hoping for nothing more than to view a cliffside property and catch a wave, but the locals have other ideas: “Don’t live here, don’t surf here,” one says, offering about as much hospitality as a switchblade.
The director of this entertaining potboiler is Lorcan Finnegan, an Irish filmmaker who seems acutely aware of the hand he’s holding here: one of the very best things about The Surfer is how alive it is to Cage’s image,...

Nicolas Cage plays the title character of “The Surfer,” but it’s not until the film’s final minute that he climbs onto a surfboard. The movie, while set on a muscle beach in Australia, isn’t about surfing. It’s about male anxiety, male power, male midlife crisis, male rituals of pain and dominance, and how much theater Nicolas Cage can wring out of all of that. “The Surfer” premiered last night at a Cannes midnight show, and that’s smart programming, because it really is a midnight movie — the kind of trippy slapdash comic nightmare where the only way to watch it is to sit back and “go with it.”
Cage makes that easy to do. The film has been designed as a bad-trip psychodrama that’s also a high-camp Nicolas Cage freak-out. I only wish that “The Surfer,” as directed by Lorcan Finnegan and written by Thomas Martin,...

There’s no point in hiring Nicolas Cage if you’re not going to let him rip with a wackadoodle, Ott performance, and he duly delivers in the sly psychological thriller The Surfer. Calibrating his character’s descent into mental and physical disarray so that it happens by evenly distributed degrees, Cage is in only moderately demented form overall here. That suits director Lorcan Finnegan (Without Name, Vivarium) and screenwriter Thomas Martin’s ambitions to call back to and yet also spoof vintage Australian New Wave films like Nicolas Roeg’s Walkabout (1971), dreamtime stories about alienated outsiders.
Toxic masculinity, the Big Bad de nos jours, also seems to be on their mind although the performances and cinematic quirks (zooms, jump cuts, all that jazz) are so hammy and gestural there’s nothing subtle about the critique. But that’s what makes it fun.
