Keanu Reeves’s The Matrix is one of the most beloved and widely known film series of all time. Over the last 20 years, the series has found itself ingrained in the very fabric of popular culture. Although it started in 1999 with Reeves’s Neo front and center, its latest and fourth past was released only recently, in 2021.

The influence of Keanu Reeves’ legacy film The Matrix is insurmountable in its degree – be it of relevance or pop culture identity. The film eschewed the generic tropes of action movies and added a blend of martial arts with high-scope science fiction to make something inherently unique. The product then created by the merger of Lilly and Lana Wachowski’s imagination continues to subvert audience expectations to date and essentially prove its worth in modern society.
The Matrix [Credit: Warner Bros.]However, the very reasons that made The Matrix such a beloved addition to the public consciousness are the same reasons that laid waste to the recent culture in film and television. While The Matrix integrates a trans identity in the film’s very core, the rest of Hollywood trips over its own two feet trying to force diversity and inclusivity in its plot and narrative.

The rules are simple: kill or be killed. Can Rick survive the game, win his freedom and find out why he was framed for a crime he didn’t commit?

Though Jon Hewitt.s latest project, Turkey Shoot, was released theatrically last week; Australian cinemas is not where the writer/director is hoping his film will find its primary audience.
In a movement being echoed around the industry, Hewitt is pinning his hopes on VoD returns, with a focus on international sales in particular.
.Theatrical [release] is over for about 90 per cent of any film made anywhere in the world,. he tells If. .You just have to look at what.s released in cinemas now to understand that, but we are still compelled and forced to release every Australian film that gets made to give it a theatrical release, because of the way things are financed.
.So that.s led to a lot of negativity because there.s a lot of movies that just won.t work theatrically. Theatrical is whole different thing now, it.s about tent-pole movies and blockbusters...

How times change. When Botho Strauss's play was first seen in Britain in 1983 it was greeted with boos and mass walkouts on its pre-West End tour.
Now it arrives in a crisp new Martin Crimp translation and an exciting Sydney Theatre Company production that yields a tumultuous performance from Cate Blanchett and is met with wild enthusiasm. But we're not just applauding a great performance; we've also finally caught up with Strauss's play.
It would be all too easy to describe it as a study in postwar alienation. Actually, it is about a woman who desperately wants to belong. Accordingly, Strauss sends his eager heroine, Lotte, on a contemporary odyssey, where she encounters a series of cold shoulders. Starting as an outsider on a Moroccan package tour, she oscillates between the German cities of Saarbrücken and Essen, only to be rejected by her husband, spurned by an old...

Warrior
Stars: Tom Hardy, Joel Edgerton, Nick Nolte, Jennifer Morrison, Frank Grillo | Written by Gavin O’Connor, Anthony Tambakis | Directed by Gavin O’Connor
The ultimate test of a fighter becomes the ultimate test for a family when ex-wrestler Tommy (Hardy) returns home for the first time in fourteen years to enlist the help of his estranged father (Nolte) to win a coveted Mixed Martial Arts tournament. By chance, Tommy’s fighter-turned-teacher brother Brendan (Edgerton) has also entered the tournament in a desperate bid to provide for his family and the stage is set for a climactic confrontation between the two brothers.
Critically acclaimed as the new Rocky, Warrior is just that. Taking the same basic traits as Stallone’s classic flick – the underdog battling against both himself, his situation and in the ring – the film blends the same facets of action and melodrama and updates it for the Mma generation.

Real Steel; Don't Be Afraid of the Dark; Fright Night; X: Night of Vengeance; Girl Model
If you want to know just how thoroughly rotten Michael Bay's infernal Transformers films really are, then look no further than Real Steel (2011, Buena Vista, 12A), a guilty pleasure that demonstrates perfectly how a movie about robots hitting each other should be made. While Bay failed spectacularly over the course of three movies (a fourth instalment is, depressingly, on the way) to conjure up anything vaguely resembling either story or characters, jobbing hack Shawn Levy, whose CV includes such underwhelming fare as Night at the Museum and Date Night, hits the nail right on its metal head on both counts.
While the writing credits may acknowledge Richard Matheson's "Steel" (previously filmed as a Twilight Zone episode in 1963), this shameless crowd-pleaser owes a greater debt to the fists aloft underdog mantra of Rocky.

Those making films on the subject of female exploitation, especially prostitution, need to be fully alert of not falling into the trap of aligning themselves with the very individuals that fuel a misogynistic interest. Sadly, even with the dangerous locations of Sydney’s very own Kings Cross red-light district on show for the international audience to see, co-writer-director Jon Hewitt and partner, writer Belinda McClory’s new crime thriller X: Night of Vengeance steps into voyeuristic territory with worrying effect.
Spartacus actress Viva Bianca plays jaded high-society call girl Holly Rowe who is called to one last well-paid threesome, before escaping for good on a plane for a new life in Paris, France. After a freak shower accident, she is forced to quickly find ‘a brunette’ off the street, and offers 17-year-old runaway and fledgling hooker Shay Ryan (Hanna Mangan Lawrence) the job for the night. Australian feature film X will get a local cinematic release later this year.
Director Jon Hewitt told Encore, despite the film being finished for over a year the plan was always to give X the time to release internationally first.
The film will be distributed by Potential Films, beginning with November 24 in Melbourne and Adelaide before opening in Sydney December 1.
Hewitt, whose other films include Acolytes and Bloodlust, told Encore: “We always had distribution, but it was a matter of when it would get a release.”
“It’s tougher than it’s ever been to get a non-Hollywood or tentpole film out there, be it tentpole commercial or tentpole art house. X is a film that needs a careful and nurtured release. The one thing I wanted to do was release it internationally first. The fact it recently got to 14 on IMDBs movie metre (a week by week hottest search...

For many people going to the dentist is the stuff of nightmares. All that drilling and fluid flying. Apparently even vampires need to have their teeth tended to every now and again, but not exactly for personal hygiene related reasons.
Below you'll find what will no doubt be a nightmarish promo for people who have fears of dentistry (or something happening to their teeth) courtesy of Twitch Film. It's in support of Jon Hewitt's (Acolytes) new flick Vampyr.
Starring Belinda McClory, Vampyr begins when "a successful TV news anchor disappears and is found a week later with no memory and shockingly brutalized. Dismissed by authorities and colleagues as just another date-rape, her life gradually unravels in a growing obsession with mystery, truth and retribution.

Vampyr will star Belinda McClory (The Matrix) and as Hewitt describes it: “an extreme horror revolving around a brutalized TV news anchor (McClory) who descends into homicidal madness” in a story that will turn the rape-revenge genre on its head, according to Twitchfilm as well.

IFC Midnight has released a new trailer for Jon Hewitt’s gritty thriller “X”, starring “Spartacus: Blood and Sand’s” Viva Bianca as a veteran call girl trying to get out of the life. As we all know by now, that’s pretty damn hard to do, especially in the movies, because where’s the drama if she just quit one day and never came back? Exactly. Check out the trailer and some images from “X”. Holly Rowe’s (Viva Bianca) retiring, kissing her callgirl life goodbye. She just has to get through her last night on the job. Remember Australian hooker thriller 'X' from 'Acolytes' director Jon Hewitt? Course you do, the one with the pretty naughty red-band trailer that emerged online a few weeks ago. Well a new trailer has arrived, which has been watered down a tad, and features it's two call girl stars Viva Bianca - below (who you can see getting totally naked as Ilithyia in 'Spartacus: Blood and Sand' - pictured below) and Hanna Mangan Lawrence. It's not as graphic as the last one but is certainly sexier than the hooker/werewolf tale 'Half Moon' trailer we saw recently, which stars pornstar Tori Black. Hewitt penned the story with co-writer and star Belinda McClory. Freya Tingley, Rowan Witt, Anthony Phelan, Wayne Blair, Eamon Farren and Joshua Payne co-star. The Queensland sun beats down and dust blows up from the dirt track when Fango steps onto the first of several locations to witness the filming of the stylish new Australian serial-killer thriller Acolytes (out this week on Anchor Bay DVD following numerous festival appearances over the past year). Virtually entombed in concrete—beneath an overpass that supports a busy highway—one can still hear the traffic, but it’s virtually drowned out by the noise of a fly swarm—perhaps entirely fitting for a film that deals with the stench of rotting corpses and the people who cause them.
Fango freezes just before rounding a corner where a rehearsal is taking place; much shouting stops suddenly, and this writer takes a spot behind the monitors being fed the picture from the Viper camera—the hi-def rig of choice for the likes of David Fincher and Michael Mann. Director Jon Hewitt...

A pair of fright favorites have been announced for Blu-ray release later this year. Dark Sky Films gave Fango the word that Henry: Portait Of A Serial Killer will have its hi-def debut September 29, while Universal Home Entertainment issues the modern zombie-comedy classic Shaun Of The Dead (previously available on a now-out-of-print HD-DVD) on Blu-ray September 22. Contents have yet to be announced, but presumably these will contain all the previous DVD special features; retail price for each is $29.98.
Speaking of Dark Sky, the company also let us know that it has bumped its release of the British gorefest Gnaw to October 13, and confirmed that the much-lauded Deadgirl will hit disc September 15. You can find articles on both these films in Fango #285, which hits the stands any day now.
Anchor Bay issues the well-reviewed Australian psychological chiller Acolytes July 28. Directed by Jon Hewitt from a script he wrote with S.P. Krause and Shayne Armstrong,...

My interest is growing fast by the day for Jon Hewitt's latest feature film, Acolytes, which will have its world premiere at the September Toronto International Film Festival as part of the always awesome "Midnight Madness" section. Today we got our hands on the one sheet for the film, which stars Joel Edgerton, Belinda McClory, Michael Dorman, Danny Baldwin ,Joshua Payne, Anthony Phelan, Todd Levi and Hanna Mangan Lawrence. In the film three teens blackmail a serial killer... it's a chiller set in the 'burbs and forests of Queensland. Watch this spot for new pics, clips and more in the coming weeks.
