A biopic based on the life of the late “Star Trek” creator Gene Roddenberry is in the works from Roddenberry Entertainment.
Gene Roddenberry’s son Rod Roddenberry is producing with Trevor Roth; the duo serves as executive producers on current series “Star Trek: Discovery” and “Star Trek: Picard.” Adam Mazer, the Emmy-winning writer of the Dr. Jack Kevorkian movie “You Don’t Know Jack” starring Al Pacino, is writing the screenplay. The search is now on for a director and cast.
The biopic will cover Roddenberry’s life before and after creating “Star Trek,” which was notable at the time for its diverse cast and was threatened with cancellation after the second season before becoming a massive worldwide franchise.
The project will also cover his survival of two plane crashes and the events leading to his death just as “Star Trek: The Next Generation” was becoming the most successful series of the franchise.

For seven years, Catherine Oxenberg says, individuals within the Nxivm organization groomed her daughter India and made her believe in their group as one of empowerment, despite many of their practices being abusive towards women. Now, those years have been condensed into a 90-minute dramatization of Oxenberg’s story for Lifetime, entitled “Escaping the Nxivm Cult: A Mother’s Fight to Save Her Daughter.”
Starting the story in the pre-nxivm days for the Oxenberg family, the movie explores why the mother and daughter duo both took an early workshop and why only India continued on with the group. When the two have differences of opinions on how much time and energy India is putting into this organization, the movie splits its point of view to spend time alone with both characters. Catherine’s experiences, portrayed by Andrea Roth, are pulled from Oxenberg’s own memories and writing in “Captive: A...

Dito Montiel is a man of many talents. He’s written everything from books to screenplays, played in a band for many years, and of course, directs films. His newest movie, Empire State, features Dwayne Johnson and Liam Hemsworth, and tells the story of Chris Potamitis, a regular guy from Queens NY who may very well have gotten away with stealing $15 million.
Dito was kind enough to talk with us for a bit, and our conversation revealed a lot about Chris’s real-life counterpart, the ridiculousness of the robbery itself, and how you go about getting the likes of The Rock and Robin Williams in your films. Check it out below!

There’s a very good chance that you’ve seen Empire State already. Perhaps not with these characters, but I’m willing to bet you’ve seen a number of heist films that are exactly like it and which tell the story with more flair and excitement. Forget that this is supposedly based on a true story (by now you should be well aware of what that really means). When that story has already been seen in countless films, that should immediately make the filmmakers ask themselves “Do we really need to tell it again, just with different characters?” Apparently they thought they had something great on their hands, but the studio saw exactly what was happening and, not deeming it worthy of a theatrical release, decided to dump it straight to Blu-Ray and DVD. At least somebody had an objective viewpoint of the project.

Every now and then a film with a promising cast just doesn't hit the mark and is relegate to straight-to-dvd hell. Such is the case with Empire State, which unfortunately looks like a dull thriller, and maybe a low point for the stellar year Dwayne Johnson is having in 2013. In the film from Dito Montiel (A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints), an armored truck security guard (Liam Hemsowrth) is suspected of assisting in a robbery of one of their vehicles. In reality, his troublemaking friends (led by Michael Angarano) are behind the heist, and an NYPD detective (Johnson) is on their trail. We wish this was more exciting. Watch? Here's the first trailer for Dito Montiel's Empire State, from Grindstone Entertainment: Empire State is directed by Dito Montiel (A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints) and written by Adam Mazer (Breach, You Don't Know Jack). First-Look At Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in Indie Heist Thriller 'Empire State' (Based On True Story)
Back in January of this year, Tambay announced Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's attachment to the heist flick Empire State. The film, which also stars Liam Hemsworth, Emma Roberts, Nikki Reed and Michael Angarano, is based on true events that took place in 1982. The unbelievably busy Johnson plays "Ransone," an NYPD officer who tries to prevent a car depository robbery orchestrated by Liam Hemsworth's character and his childhood friend. Empire State is written by Adam Mazer (Breach, HBO’s You Don’t Know Jack) and directed by Dito Montiel (Fighting, The Son Of No One). The film is set to hit theaters June 10, 2013. Well, if Dito Montiel is an example of anything, it's of that famous old saying: when life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. It was about a year and a half ago that the director endured savage reviews at Sundance for "The Son Of No One," his procedural starring a promising cast of Channing Tatum, Al Pacino, Juliette Binoche and more that ultimately wound up getting a cursory release before disappearing onto home video. But he's dusted himself off and gotten another film on the way, "Empire State," and the first two images of the film's stars, Liam Hemsworth and Dwayne Johnson, have emerged.
Penned by Adam Mazer ("Breach," "You Don't Know Jack"), the thriller is based around the real-life robbery of the Sentry Armored Car Company in 1982; an $11.4 million haul that, at the time, was the biggest cash robbery in U.S. history. Some good source material indeed, and...

No matter how up or down his career is, director Dito Montiel always seems to be pushing forward on his next film. The Guide to Recognizing Your Saints helmer is bouncing back from last year’s mega-bomb Al Pacino and Channing Tatum drama The Son of No One, with a new heist film, Empire State.
Already deep into production, the Adam Mazer-scripted, true-life tale, follows “two childhood friends from Astoria, N.Y., who plan to rob an armored car depository, with Dwayne Johnson playing the NYPD detective out to bust them.” Some photos of stars Liam Hemsworth, Emma Roberts and Nikki Reed have been circling on various outlets and can be seen above, but now Johnson has shared what looks to be the first official still on Twitter. Check it out below, featuring Johnson deep into action mode, for the film also starring Michael Angarano, Jerry Ferrara and Chris Diamantopoulos.

With Dwayne Johnson, Liam Hemsworth, and Emma Roberts seemingly ready to lead Empire State, Dito Montiel has started to track down supporting players in his real-life crime drama. Deadline has two reports on this front, telling us that Chris Diamantopoulos (The Three Stooges), Michael Angarano (Red State), Nikki Reed (Twilight), Jerry Ferrara (Entourage), and Paul Ben-Victor (The Wire) will all take some screen space. (It’s pointed out that Ben-Victor and Diamantopoulos have both played Moe Howard in the past. Trivia!)
Adam Mazer wrote the film, which centers on “two childhood friends from Astoria, N.Y., who plan to rob an armored car depository, with Johnson playing the NYPD detective out to bust them.” Diamantopoulos is the only one with a confirmed role, and it seems like a big one; he’ll play a mob boss who realizes that only two people committed a robbery, while everyone else thinks its a group of criminals.

Empire State, the drama that stars Liam Hemsworth and Dwayne Johnson, has filled out its cast with Twilight Saga‘s Nikki Reed, Michael Angarano, Emma Roberts, Entourage‘s Jerry Ferrara, Paul Ben-Victor, Shenae Grimes and Greg Vrotsos. The latter marks a convergence of Moe’s, with Ben-Victor playing Moe Howard in the ABC biopic of The Three Stooges, and Diamantopoulos just played Moe in the feature film. Empire State production kicks off Tuesday in New York City and New Orleans with Dito Montiel directing an Adam Mazer script about two friends in the ’80s who pull off a heist at an armored car company. Nightclub cinema is not, nor will it ever be, a real genre, but if it were — you clearly have to entertain my notions right now — only a few would be prime entries into the canon. This year’s Sleepless Night might be a contender; 54 could get a shout-out; I, personally, think Boogie Nights is a strong contender; and I know a few people like 24 Hour Party People. With any luck, we could have another film to add to this ersatz list.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Oscar winner Barry Levinson – who directed The Natural, Wag the Dog, Rain Man and about a dozen other notable flicks – is on board to helm a Hank Aaron biopic which focuses on the baseball icon’s quest to beat Babe Ruth’s career home run record. "The Natural" helmer Barry Levinson is set to direct a film about baseball Hall of Famer Hank Aaron and his quest to break Babe Ruth’s home run record says The Hollywood Reporter.
Adam Mazer ("You Don’t Know Jack") has come onboard to adapt the script from Howard Bryant's book "The Last Hero: A Life of Henry Aaron" with a take he and Levinson developed.
The story will focus on the period of 1972 to 1974, when Aaron chased then shattered a sacrosanct record held for decades by Ruth, who hit 714 home runs during his career.
Aaron and his supporters faced death threats and hate mail because some fans didn’t want a black man to break Ruth’s record.
Aaron himself will serve as a consultant on the film which Mike Tollin and Glenn Rigberg are producing.

Baseball legend Hank Aaron will be getting his own big screen biopic, and Barry Levinson is set to direct it. Levinson is a talented director that has made some great films in his career such as The Natural, which is one of my favorite baseball movies of all time. He also directed Young Sherlock Holmes, Rain Man, Bugsy, Sleepers, and a ton of other good movies. I think he's the best choice as a director to take on a movie like this. The script is being written by Adam Mazer (Empire State).
The movie will be based on the book by Howard Bryant called The Last Hero: The Life Story of Henry Aaron and according to Variety the story "will follow the right fielders chase of Babe Ruth's home run record from 1972 to 1974." This should make for a great movie as this was a very big part of Aaron's life.

Brian Helgeland’s 42, the chronicle of the Branch Rickey and Jackie Robinson relationship isn’t the only baseball biopic in the works. The Natural’s Barry Levinson is now in talks to direct a Hank Aaron biopic, says a report over at Variety.
The Natural is considered one of the best sport movies of all time, so it seems fitting that a man like Helgeland would be directing a movie based on the former home run king. The movie will be based on Howard Byrant’s book The Last Hero: The Story of Hank Aaron, and follow the famous right fielder’s chase to beat Ruth’s record during the 1972-1974 seasons. You Don’t Know Jack scribe Adam Mazer will write the adaptation.
There is no word on which studio will distribute the now untitled movie, and no cast has been announced. But I could care less considering Levinson is helming nother baseball movie.

Barry Levinson's 1984 film The Natural is widely regarded as one of the best sports movies of all time, and it might actually be the best baseball movie ever made. (Calm down, The Sandlot enthusiasts!) It's safe to say Levinson knows how to handle the genre, and like so many underdog sports heroes, it looks like the director is returning to the diamond for one more game. Variety reports Levinson is taking on a still-untitled biopic of baseball icon Hank Aaron, the man who bested The Sultan of Swat, Babe Ruth's, home run record back in 1974 and held the title until 2007, when the steroid-infused Barry Bonds snapped the streak. More below! Based on Howard Bryant's book The Last Hero: The Story of Hank Aaron, the film will follow the famous right fielder's chase to beat Ruth's record during the 1972-1974 seasons. Adam Mazer, who worked with Levinson on...

Barry Levinson is no stranger to the game of baseball - in fact, he wouldn't be as notable a name without the sport. While his first film, Diner, was tremendously well received, his second film, The Natural with Robert Redford, is considered by many to be a classic. Levinson hasn't made a movie about the game since, but it would seem he's getting the itch again. Variety has learned that the filmmaker has signed on to helm a new biopic about the life and times of Hank Aaron, one of the greatest baseball players who ever lived. The project, which is being written by Adam Mazer, is being based on The Last Hero: The Life Story of Henry Aaron and will be set between the years of 1972 and 1974 when Aaron was chasing Babe Ruth's all time home run record. In a statement about the project, Aaron, who is now...

It seems the baseball movie is back in vogue in Hollywood. While the genre pics are generally well-received stateside, studios and the like have been reluctant to put too much money behind them in recent times, as the sport doesn't play well internationally, where box office dollars are more important than ever. But with Jackie Robinson getting the big-screen treatment courtesy of Brian Helgeland's "42," another giant of the game is stepping up to the plate.
Barry Levinson is set to direct a biopic of Hammerin' Hank Aaron in a forthcoming film. Of course, the ins and outs of the diamond are nothing new to the director, who helmed one of the all-time greatest movies of the genre, "The Natural." If you're just catching up, Hank Aaron was the all-time leader of home runs for years, dramatically breaking Babe Ruth's record on April 8th, 1974. His record has since been...

To be wholly honest, the announcement of Dito Montiel‘s newest feature passed over my head so swiftly that, only a little over two months later, this item feels like the big reveal. (You’ll have to pardon my insolence and understand that The Son of No One does not encourage nor warrant further attention.) Anyway, Variety reports that Emma Roberts will take a role in the Fighting helmer’s next feature, Empire State, putting her in company with Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games) and Dwayne Johnson.
Early January’s aforementioned announcement told us that they were signed for an Adam Mazer-scripted, true-life tale, which follows “two childhood friends from Astoria, N.Y., who plan to rob an armored car depository, with Johnson playing the NYPD detective out to bust them.” (Hemsworth is playing one of these friends, named Chris; the other part still needs to be cast.) She may no longer be planning to get criminal for Harmony Korine’s girls-gone-really-wild comedy drama Spring Breakers, but Emma Roberts still seems attracted to the cinematically illegal side of life. She’s signed on to join the cast of Dito Monteil’s heist pic Empire State. Dwayne Johnson and Liam Hemsworth are already aboard to star in the story of two childhood friends from New York (Hemsworth will be one of the pair) who plan to rob an armoured card depository. Johnson will be the NYPD detective who will do whatever it takes to bring them down. Now Roberts will be playing a waitress who shows some romantic interest in Hemsworth’s wannabe thief.Breach writer Adam Mazer is back in real-life territory, as the film's plot is based on events that happened back in 1982. There’s no word on whether Roberts’ character really exists, but it would certainly...

Earlier this week, British actors Benedict Cumberbatch (BBC's Sherlock, War Horse) and Noel Clarke (BBC's Dr. Who series) were added to the cast of director J.J. Abrams' sequel to his successful 2009 reboot, tentatively titled Star Trek 2. Cumberbatch is believed to be playing the sequel's villain, though that's not exactly confirmed and Cumberbatch isn't talking. Clarke is reportedly playing "a family man with a wife and young daughter", and it looks like his wife has now been cast.
EW reports that Nazneen Contractor (24) has been cast as Clarke's wife, though how their characters are utilized in the plot of the movie is unknown. No other character details were offered.
Contractor joins fellow newcomers Peter Weller (Robocop, Dexter) and Alice Eve (She's Out of My League). Weller's agent has revealed that the actor's part was "a substantial role and that Peter is playing a C.E.O.", but Eve's role is still unknown.

After the somewhat bizarre casting of up-and-comer Liam Hemsworth in The Expendables 2, a sequel to a film that was seemingly created just to give aging action stars something to do, it should come as little surprise that Thor’s little brother is slowly being styled into more of an action man. But it’s still a bit of an eye-opener that the actor is now set to star alongside no less than The Rock himself. Sorry, “Dwayne Johnson.” Deadline Toledo reports that Hemsworth is about to close a deal, with Johnson currently negotiating for his role, in indie Empire State. Written by Adam Mazer (Breach, You Don’t Know Jack), the film was once titled The Sentry Keep, and is “based on the true story of a 1982 NYC armored car company robbery thought at the time to be the largest cash heist in U.S. history.” And while that sounds interesting enough, and...

Liam Hemsworth and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson are close to signing on for Dito Montiel's Empire State, with the former on the verge of closing a deal and the latter in negotiations.
