By the time the curtain rang down on CBS’ “The Judy Garland Show” on March 29, 1964, the musical variety show had, in just one season, three producers and three different formats. Despite good reviews from critics and Judy Garland’s devoted fan base, the series wasn’t felled by the mercurial Garland being difficult but by the Cartwrights — Ben, Little Joe, Adam, and Hoss — of NBC’s ratings powerhouse “Bonanza.”
Though “The Judy Garland Show” was cancelled after one season, it certainly has lived on over the past six decades. The show was included in TV Guide’s 2013 list of 60 series that were “Cancelled Too Soon.” It certainly was the series that got away. Not only was the mercurial Garland in top (and emotional) voice, but the show also featured a powerhouse of guest stars from her frequent leading man Mickey Rooney, Ray Bolger from “The Wizard of Oz” and newcomers such as Barbra Streisand.

As we approach O-Day and the 95th Academy Awards on March 12, it’s always fun to go back and look at the Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress categories and revel in some of the trivia and shockers that have gone down on the awards season’s biggest stage. This is the rare year when Meryl Streep isn’t in the running, as her 21 overall nominations in the acting categories are nearly double the number of her closest female pursuer, Katherine Hepburn, who has 12. However, Hepburn still holds the all-time Oscar record with four acting wins. Streep has a mere three.
Here are some other actress category factoids to chew on:
Should Cate Blanchett win Best Actress this year for her role in “Tar,” she would tie Streep, Ingrid Bergman and Frances McDormand for second place behind Hepburn among actresses with three triumphs apiece. All four of Hepburn’s wins...

Everything is coming up Judy Garland this year because the beloved performer was born a century ago on June 10th. TCM is making Garland its “Star of the Month” and the Criterion Channel is offering its own retrospective. Warner Archive is releasing three of her films on Blu-Ray: 1941’s “Ziegfeld Girl”; 1942’s “For Me and My Gal” and 1945’s “The Clock.” There are many celebrations taking place around the country in honor of her centennial including at the Judy Garland Museum in her hometown of Grand Rapids, Minnesota and the Hollywood Forever Cemetery where Garland is now buried. And there’s even a new perfume — “Judy-a Garland Fragrance by Vincenzo Spinnato” — that will be unveiled at a birthday gala in Los Angeles.
I don’t know about you, but I converted to “Judy-ism” at the age of five when I first saw her beloved 1939 classic “The Wizard of Oz” on TV.

Perhaps Renee Zellweger will have better luck than Judy Garland did at the Academy Awards. Zellweger, who won supporting actress for 2003’s “Cold Mountain,” is the favorite to take home the Oscar next February for her haunting portrayal of the legendary star/singer in the acclaimed “Judy.”
Exactly 65 years ago, Garland was the front-runner to receive her first Academy Award for her powerhouse performance in “A Star is Born,” George Cukor‘s lavish musical version of the 1937 William Wellman classic tale of a matinee idol on the descent who marries an ingenue on the rise.
When the star-studded premiere at the Pantages Theatre aired live on TV on Sept. 29, 1954, star after star told host Jack Carson, who also appears in the film, that Garland was a shoo-in for Oscar gold. Dean Martin told the crowd Garland would probably take home every accolade and Lucille Ball echoed his sentiments.

Renée Zellweger may be earning praise for her portrayal of Judy Garland in Judy, but the real-life story behind the Wizard of Oz star is much more tragic.
Garland dominated movie screens with roles in The Wizard of Oz, A Star Is Born, Meet Me in St. Louis and the Easter Parade, but the star struggled with substance abuse and body image issues since her breakout at the age of 16.
The new film on her life, Judy, follows Garland from 1968 to 1969 as she performs a series of sold-out concerts in London while struggling to cope with depression and her addictions.

The Oscars love actors playing alcoholic, drug-addicted singers.
Last year, Rami Malek took home the big prize for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury in “Bohemian Rhapsody,” beating out Bradley Cooper for his work as the fictional Jackson Maine in “A Star Is Born.”
Over the years, we’ve seen Jamie Foxx win for “Ray,” Jeff Bridges for “Crazy Heart and Marion Cotillard for “La Vie en Rose.” Joaquin Phoenix’s work as Johnny Cash in “Walk the Line” earned him a nomination and Diana Ross walked into the 1973 Academy Awards as nominee for “Lady Sings the Blues.”
And now, it’s Renée Zellweger’s turn. Her name is sure to be among the nominees when the nominations are announced in January for her work as Judy Garland in the upcoming “Judy,” director Rupert Goold’s adaptation of the Tony-nominated 2012 play “End of the Rainbow.” The Roadside Attractions/Ld Entertainment drama...

"The Wizard of Oz has great music and amazing chemistry among its cast. It's a perfect storm, no pun intended," William Stillman, co-author of the new book The Road to Oz exclusively told Closer Weekly — in the magazine's latest issue, on newsstands now — of the cinematic masterpiece. What fans might not know, he hinted, are behind-the-scenes trials and tribulations that went on during the making of the 1939 classic. Stillman and his writing partner, Jay Scarfone, cover all the backstage drama, starting with the fact that Judy Garland almost lost the part of Dorothy to Shirley Temple, who much more closely resembled the character L. Frank Baum described in his 1900 kids' novel. When Shirley's studio refused to let her out of her contract to star in the MGM vehicle, Judy secured the role, despite being older than Dorothy was originally written to be. Everyone yearns for their mom when they're sick, and Liza Minnelli's 1948 film for comfort after she had to cancel a March 30 Las Vegas concert with Michael Feinstein due to a viral infection. "Liza was more upset about backing out of the show than she was about being sick," an insider tells Closer. Her love for the stage is so strong that she's fighting to get back to it as soon as she can. "She's the Energizer bunny," brother Joey Luft, 63, assures Closer of Liza's resilience. (Photo Credit: Getty Images) "She's had every imaginable surgery — both knees, hips, back. She's a trouper, and I'm sure she'll battle this and be Ok," he added. Joey, the son of Judy and Sid Luft, says he's checking up on Liza regularly while also touching base with his other sister, Lorna Luft, 65. We're so sorry to hear this. Singer Lorna Luft, the youngest daughter of late Hollywood icon Judy Garland, has been diagnosed with a brain tumor after collapsing backstage during one of her concerts. According to Lorna's rep, Victoria Varela, the 65-year-old star fell ill on Friday, March 9 in the middle of her show at London’s Pizza Express Jazz Club and was immediately rushed to the hospital by her husband, Colin Freeman. Varela told People that Colin — whom Lorna married in 1996 — was already worried about his wife after she was "forgetting lyrics and parts of her monologue" during the concert. After Lorna was admitted to the hospital, she was initially diagnosed with a brain tumor, though Varela said more information pertaining to the singer's health will come as she undergoes further medical testing. Judy Garland died in 1969 at the age of 47 of a barbiturate overdose. Her funeral in New York City was swarmed by some 20,000 fans grieving the empathetic star; as her A Star Is Born co-star James Mason opined in his eulogy, “Judy’s great gift was that she could wring tears out of hearts of rock.”
Almost five decades later, Garland’s descendants recently had her remains shipped from New York to California. While that act is kind of unconventional, the New York Daily News reports that the reasoning behind it is rather sweet: Garland’s kids Liza Minnelli, Lorna Luft, and Joey Luft are now getting along in years, and Garland’s former resting place would not have enough burial space for all of them. So the family will all eventually be buried together in Los Angeles’ Hollywood Forever Cemetery, giving Garland followers a new place ...

Judy Garland was just 16 when she starred in her breakout role, 1939’s The Wizard of Oz. At just 4 feet, 11½ inches, Garland had a cute, girl-next-door charm helped set her apart from her glamorous contemporaries like Elizabeth Taylor and Ava Gardner. But with success would come the need to maintain her youthful looks and thin frame — pressures from Hollywood studio MGM that would fuel the legendary songstress’ drug abuse and eventually lead to her death.
Now, more than four decades after an accidental drug overdose took her life at age 47, a new memoir about the late star pulls back the curtain on Garland’s demons.

While Lupita Nyong'o was last night's definitive fashion icon, with her flowing, low-cut powder-blue gown that seemed to be a part of her skin, there was another star in blue that received almost as much attention, but not for the best reasons. We are, of course, referring to Liza Minnelli, whose mere presence seemed to be a mystery to almost everyone in attendance (and most of the people watching at home). So why was Liza Minnelli there?
Well, ostensibly, Minnelli, who had a shock of blue in her hair to accentuate the electric blue pants suit that she wore, was there to commemorate her mother Judy Garland's involvement in "Wizard of Oz." (Pink, who also wore a dress with a plunging neckline, performed a song from the film.) I don't envy Neil Meron and Craig Zadan, the producers of Sunday's Oscar telecast. They have an impossible job, with a variety of incompatible constituencies to please -- the Academy old guard, ABC executives, fans of the competing movies, people who didn't like any of the competing movies, the young, the old, the domestic audience, the foreign audience, and the TV critics. Last year, they came up with one of the higher-rated Oscar shows in recent years, but they also took flak for the often deliberately tasteless antics of emcee Seth "I Saw Your Boobs" MacFarlane.
This year, they've gone the opposite way, hiring Ellen DeGeneres, who proved she can be blandly inoffensive to a worldwide audience when she hosted the show in 2007. Of course, the show will still be a Frankenstein-monster of parts that don't really fit together, there will be too many awards given to too many people you've never heard of,...

Steve Pond reports that the children of Judy Garland -- Liza Minnelli, Lorna Luft, and Joey Luft -- will be part of this Sunday's Oscar tribute to "The Wizard of Oz." The legendary film was released in 1939 and is celebrating its 75th anniversary. Academy Awards producers Neil Meron and Craig Zadan confirmed the news today on Twitter without revealing any details. While Garland never actually won an Oscar, Minnelli prevailed as Best Actress for "Cabaret" in 1972. The Wrap. Paul Sheehan's Gold Derby story on Monday gives you the complete list of Oscar presenters for Sunday's ceremony. Pete Hammond says that the producers have developed a theme that promises to be what they call "entertaining and emotional" with a salute to heroes (real life, fictional, and animated). The planned commemoration of the 75th anniversary of "The Wizard of Oz" during this year's Oscars telecast is getting a sentimental boost: The children of late "Oz" star Judy Garland will reunite to introduce the film.
The Hollywood Reporter writes that Liza Minnelli, Lorna Luft, and Joey Luft will appear on the Academy Awards telecast to pay tribute to Garland's most iconic film. The details of their role in honoring "Oz" -- as well as overall details of the movie's tribute -- have yet to be finalized, and are being kept under wraps for now.
Minnelli, daughter of Garland and second husband (and legendary director) Vincente Minnelli, is a celebrated star in her own right, having picked up a Best Actress statuette for her role in 1972's "Cabaret." Health problems have largely kept her out of the public eye recently, THR reports, though she did attend last month's Screen Actors Guild Awards.

"So You Think You Can Dance" reached a milestone on Thursday, July 23 with the 100th episode celebration. Katie Holmes appeared as a special guest, paying tribute to Judy Garland by singing and performing "Get Happy". But on top of all the festivity, two dancers have to end their journey.
The special episode started with a Broadway number of "One" from "A Chorus Line". The show then cut the chase and announced which dancers were in the bottom two. In the women side, Janette Manrara was in the bottom two along with judges favorite Kayla Radomski. In the men side, Jason Glover was in the bottom two along with another favorite, Brandon Bryant.
Before the deliberation of who go home, Holmes gave the highly-anticipated performance. Nigel Lythgoe, whose birthday happened to be on that night, told the viewers that Garland's son Joey Luft was among the audience.
