Isabel Rose, a Manhattan-based singer and actress, recently released her new album, the early ‘60s inspired Trouble in Paradise.
Isabel Rose 'Trouble In Paradise'
Rose, who will be celebrating the new album release Wednesday with a show at New York City’s 54 Below, spoke with uInterview about the inspiration behind her latest musical effort. While Rose pays homage to the pre-hippie 60s era, her music and accompanying stylistic act is modern.
“The performances are stylized, but I'm not a pastiche act, so it's not like going to see a '60s act, like Hairspray on Broadway,” Rose told uInterview exclusively. “I'm a here-and-now performer influenced by that era, but really performing in the here and now.”
“The '60s – that I'm referencing – was before, like, everyone dropping acid; it was sort of the Camelot/Rat Pack '60s,” Rose explained. “That was just a gay old martini time,...

Singer Isabel Rose is celebrating the release of her new album Trouble in Paradise in style with a gig at Manhattan's 54 Below. Rose finds her stylistic inspiration in the pre-hippie 60s. "I'm not a pastiche act," she told uInterview exclusively. "I'm a here-and-now performer, influenced by that era, but really performing in the here and now."
For the title song's video, Rose had a little help from some of Gotham's leading drag queens — Hedda Lettuce, Paige Turner and Ivy Winters. "I learned so much from them, they are so fun, so talented, and they really represented the theme of the song and that is that nothing is at it seems," Rose said.
Catch Isabel Rose on Wednesday, Oct. 1 at 9:30p.m. at 54 Below (254 W 54th Street, N.Y, N.Y.) For tickets, click here.

It’s been a decade since we lost Laura Branigan (she died in her sleep of a cerebral aneurysm), but her music will live forever, and those 80′s hits still hold up fabulously decades later.
Today would have been her 57th birthday, so let’s pay tribute to one of the most passionate vocalists in pop music history. These 20 songs represent her greatest hits, should-have-been hits, and unforgettable album cuts. It’s the Essential Laura Branigan.

For her last music video (and last work with Atlantic Records), Laura recorded this cover of the Donna Summer classic for her Greatest Hits collection. And yes, that’s Miss Understood and Hedda Lettuce in the video.

Ugh.
I usually enjoy the avant-garde challenges because it give the designers a chance to go off the deep end (which admittedly for some, isn't a big leap), and there's usually one or two designs that are creative and dazzling.
Then there was last night.
Here is the synopsis for the episode: "The designers are brought to a magnificent location to spark their inspiration for their final challenge where they learn they must create avant-garde looks." So far, so good. The magnificent location is Oheka Castle in Long Island, which truly is well, magnificent. The designers breathlessly exclaim how inspired they are, and they can't wait to get started. So far, so good.
They have to create designs around the "Four Leading Ladies" of L'Oreal's new makeup line Electric Fantasie: The Enchanted Queen (black and berry), Seductive Temptress (gold and green), The Wise Mystic (violets and blues), and...

This is the first in a new column, Movie Lovers We Love, that looks at the best in entrepreneurial, impassioned and otherwise cool cinephiles and what they create -- the websites, theaters, film programs and ideas we hadn't even begun to consider. If this sounds like you or someone you know, send us a note at [email protected]. You're a New Yorker. You have great, film-loving friends. But if you told them you wanted to see a movie tonight, in theaters, that would be undoubtedly worthwhile, how many would tell you about tonight's screening of Michael Curtiz's Joan Crawford-starring "Mildred Pierce," hosted at the Chelsea Clearview Theater by the tenacious drag queen Hedda Lettuce? We didn't think so. You need more friends like Paul Brunick's website AltScreen, a comprehensive directory to repertory and indie cinema in New York. AltScreen's bread and butter is an immensely useful calendar...

Tonight at 10 p.m., Logo will air a comedy special called One Night Stand Up: Dragtastic, marking the extremely rare occasion in the history of the fledgling gay cable network where it features a bunch of really funny drag queens. Drag queen Hedda Lettuce will host a screening of The Poseidon Adventure at New York's Chelsea Cinemas on Thursday April 1. The over-the-top Hedda will introduce the film, but purists may have to put up with the audience "participating" by shouting out their favorite lines, especially those deemed campy. For details click here. Click here for Cinema Retro columnist David Savage's coverage of last year's screening of the film, along with comments from cast member Carol Lynley.

Ever wonder what it would be like if the Lgbt community ruled the world? Well, GLAAD Award-winner Tyra Banks wondered too, so yesterday on her show she conducted a little "social experiment" called "The Gay Kingdom."
(I'm going to use the labels each participant gave his or herself for the sake of simplifying this post.)
Six members of the Lgbt community — who identified themselves as: "masculine gay man," "transgendered woman," "butch lesbian," "drag queen," "feminine gay man," "bisexual man," and "lipstick lesbian" — volunteered to vote on and role play a Lgbt social hierarchy, and discuss the results on Tyra's show. With a few exceptions, their assessment of one another's sexuality was surprisingly harsh.
The task of The Gay Kingdom was to assign the following roles to each of the participants: king, queen, pauper, jester, cook, villain, concubine. (You know, to make it as applicable to the real world as possible.

The queer and queer-friendly media elite gathered for the 20th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in New York on Saturday. You can find the full list of recipients after the break as well as scads of red carpet photos of the event.

Regarding David Savage's report earlier today on our web site about tomorrow's New York City screening of The Poseidon Adventure hosted by drag queen Hedda Lettuce, comes Retro columnist Tom Lisanti's perspective:
Drag legend Hedda Lettuce hosts a tribute screening to the granddaddy of all disaster movies The Poseidon Adventure (1972) this Saturday night, January 24, 10 P.M. at Clearview Chelsea Theatres on 23rd Street and 8th Avenue in New York. Forget the atrocious remakes, this is the one to see!
As everyone knows by now it is New Year's Eve on the SS Poseidon when just after the stroke of midnight a huge tidal wave causes the ship to go topsy turvy and a small band of survivors must climb, crawl, swim their way to the bottom now the top of the ship. Hip preacher Gene Hackman leads to safety a ragtag band of stereotypes including tough talking cop Ernest Borgnine...

If the phrase Barbara, please! means something special to you and you live in New York, most likely you’ve attended at least once the weekly Clearview Classics series at Chelsea’s Clearview Cinemas, hosted by New York’s own, reigning “Queen of Green,” drag performer and comic chanteuse Hedda Lettuce. If not, you have no excuse. Mark your calendars now. Screening twice on Thursday nights and once on Saturdays, and attended by a congregation of fanatical members who can recite every word of Mommie Dearest, Torch Song, Airport ’75, Earthquake, or Xanadu at will, Clearview Classics has been the main home of “Lettuce” for eight years now. Every week she packs in a crowd for her hilarious pre-movie show in which she warms up the crowd (not that they need it) with songs (which she sings herself), key scene re-enactments with audience members, special guests and, if you should be so unfortunate,...
