It was the year 2016 when the world was introduced to Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor with the film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Fans loved it so much that a spin-off show titled Andor was made with Luna in the lead.

Six years after Vox Lux, Brady Corbet is finally returning with his next feature The Brutalist. Led by Adrien Brody, Guy Pearce, Felicity Jones, Joe Alwyn, Raffey Cassidy, Stacy Martin, Isaach De Bankolé, and Alessandro Nivola, it’s shaping up to be a drama of epic proportions: 215 minutes long, with a 15-minute intermission, shot on VistaVision, and presented on 70mm across 26 reels weighing 300 pounds.
Ahead of the film’s Venice Film Festival premiere, Corbet spoke with Variety about his approach for shooting in the format. “It feels grander and more accurate to the color that a director and colorist and all the engineers are working to achieve,” said the director, who worked with Kodak and Fotokem on using 70mm, which only accounted for 1% of the film’s budget. “It’s the most accurate representation of the film as a final product. Alberto Barbera, it must be said, has done it again.
The long-running director of the Venice Film Festival, who successfully repositioned the august Italian cinema event as an awards-season launchpad, on Tuesday unveiled another top-shelf lineup for the 81st Biennale (Aug. 28-Sept. 7). And, as Kendall Roy would say, it’s “all bangers, all the time.”
Alongside tentpole studio sequels — Warner Bros. will kick off the festival with the out-of-competition screening of Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and Todd Phillips returns to the Lido competition with Joker: Folie à Deux, the follow-up to his 2019 Golden Lion-winner Joker — Barbera has selected a tasty mix of established auteurs and up-and-coming talent that looks to appeal both to critics and international buyers.
Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga in Joker: Folie À Deux.

What a difference a year makes.
After being the first major film festival to navigate the choppy waters of programming huge world premieres at a time when most actors were on strike last year, the Venice Film Festival is back for its 81st edition with a lineup of showy projects. This time, stars like George Clooney, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Nicole Kidman, and Lady Gaga can actually come out to the Lido to support them.
Focusing on the 21 competition titles (down two from last year), the most expected entrants were Luca Guadanigno’s “Queer,” Pablo Larrain’s “Maria,” and Pedro Almodóvar’s “The Room Next Door” (his first English-language feature). Led by Daniel Craig, Jolie, and Tilda Swinton, respectively, each film arrives with awards hopes baked in already — especially considering the filmmakers’ track records with directing Oscar-nominated performances. While “The Room Next Door” furthers Almodóvar’s long-running relationship with distributor Sony Pictures Classics,...

Filmmaker Brady Corbet has premiered features twice before at Venice, but never at this scale.
“The Brutalist” is the director’s first feature since 2018’s “Vox Lux,” which starred Natalie Portman as a pop star haunted by a school shooting. Before that, Corbet also premiered “The Childhood of a Leader” (2015) at Venice, announcing a singular cinematic voice after years of acting in indies like “Melancholia,” “Simon Killer,” “Mysterious Skin,” and “Thirteen.”
As Venice Film Festival artistic director Alberto Barbera revealed during the July 23 press conference announcing the lineup, “The Brutalist” will premiere in competition. It’s also a whopping 215 minutes long, which includes a 15-minute intermission. The film was shot on Vista Vision by Lol Crawley, director of photography on the celluloid-made “Vox Lux” and “The Childhood of a Leader” as well as Noah Baumbach’s “White Noise” more recently. The venerable event in 2023 took place under the cloud of the SAG-AFTRA strike, which prevented many stars coming out in support of their movies. Many of the films announced this morning by La Biennale President Pietrangelo Buttafuoco and Venice Film Festival Artistic Director Alberto Barbera were widely anticipated, including Todd Phillips’ Joaquin Phoenix/Lady Gaga starrer Joker: Folie à Deux. Image Source: Walt Disney Rogue One: A Star Wars Story stands as one of the top five highest-rated films on Rotten Tomatoes, thanks to an ensemble cast including Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, and the Academy Award-nominated Felicity Jones—not forgetting Gareth Edwards’ visionary direction and its captivating plotline that expands the Star Wars universe. Even with such an incredible team and beloved franchise as Star Wars, creating a brand-new Star Wars film—particularly one like Rogue One—is no easy task. The pressure to live up to the legacy of this saga can be immense; at the time of release, Felicity Jones vividly remembered feeling overwhelmed on that unforgettable first day of filming. Rogue One stands out from the rest of the entries in the Star Wars franchise, as it steers the story away from the conflict between the Jedi and Sith. It follows the story of Jyn Erso, a member of the Rebel Alliance, who is part of a group that steals the plans for the Death Star.

Some of the best "Star Wars" stories are those that give us a break from those drama queens known as the Jedi and shift their focus to how the other side lives in a galaxy far, far way. In a setting populated by space wizards, witches, and mystical entities, there's something instantly relatable about common folk who know nothing of the Force and are, to borrow a turn of phrase from Jango Fett, simple men and women trying to make their way in the universe. It's similar to why everyone loves hobbits in "The Lord of the Rings."
While "Andor" has realized the full potential of this approach, it was its predecessor, 2016's "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," that paved the way and has, in return, taken on deeper dimensions thanks to its prequel series. The film's protagonist, Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), has no ties to the Jedi; she's...

Gareth Edwards' 2016 nostalgia-fest "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" seems to have been made to address what some people call a plot hole in George Lucas' 1977 film "Star Wars." In Lucas' film, the young Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) pilots a light attack craft up to a miniature hole in the exterior of the moon-sized Death Star, drops a bomb in it, and causes the entire superstructure to blow up. It is a satisfying ending to an exhilarating sci-fi pulp adventure.
Starwoids, however, watched Lucas films enough times that they began to ask questions. Why, the query went, would the deathly efficient Empire build a moon-sized planet-killing machine with such a grievous design flaw? Why build something so large and overpowered if a single bomb from a light attack craft can destroy it entirely?
The makers of "Rogue One" took that criticism to heart, and backward-engineered a story to explain the flaw.

Earlier this spring, we talked to Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly about their excellent Apple TV+ sci-fi series “Dark Matter” for our Bingeworthy podcast; it’s a darker, more adult consideration of the multiverse-type stories that have dominated comic book movies of late. “Dark Matter” is anything but a comic book movie and centers on a doppelgänger physicist from another universe who abducts his other self in order to be with the woman he missed his chance to be with.

Eddie Redmayne had one of the best moments in his career when he won the Oscar for his performance as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything. The actor did immense research and training to portray the late theoretical physicist accurately and received widespread acclaim.
However, despite such training, the British actor found himself suffering from intense anxiety and lack of sleep before filming the 2014 biopic. Recently in an interview, Eddie Redmayne confessed that he could not sleep for the entire night worrying if he could do justice to the role.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story almost gave fans a different ending, but at some point, changes had to happen to deliver the best treatment of the story. The creative team behind the film always intended to end the film with a bang, and that’s to kill off the entire Rebel team.
Felicity Jones in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
In the early days of drafting the script, the writers had a different idea where they concocted an alternate narrative. However, they seemed to fear that Disney might not like it because it might be too dark and gruesome.

According to MyTimeToShineHello, James Wan is one of the directors in the mix to helm the movie. Whether this means he's actually had discussions about boarding the project is not clear.

"We do very much have the ambition about creating a bigger universe around Spider-Man." These were the words uttered by former Sony Pictures Entertainment chief Michael Lynton after an investor meeting in November 2013. Those words would become the undoing of the franchise solely under Sony's stewardship, with 2014's "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" serving as the nail in the coffin. With the benefit of hindsight, we might be looking at the most outright financially successful franchise-killer in cinema history.
The Andrew Garfield-led "Spider-Man" films remain a tragic mixed bag. There are those who adore Garfield as Marvel's famed webslinger. There are many others who can't get past the messy direction the films themselves wandered down -- particularly this sequel we're talking about today.

Among the new productions on Broadway this spring is a revival of the classic musical “Cabaret,” starring Eddie Redmayne. In 2014 he starred as Stephen Hawking in director James Marsh‘s biopic “The Theory of Everything.” His performance won him an Oscar for Best Actor (making him the eighth youngest winner in that category at age 33), overcoming stiff competition from Michael Keaton, the star of the Best Picture winner of that year, “Birdman.” How did Redmayne pull through? Here are five reasons.
1. The industry felt he came into his own
Prior to “The Theory of Everything,” Redmayne was a rising star. In 2010 he won a Tony for his Broadway debut starring opposite Alfred Molina in John Logan‘s play “Red.” He went on to get more prominent film roles where critics, audiences and the industry started to take notice of him. Among them were Simon Curtis‘s 2011 Oscar-nominated biopic “My Week with Marilyn...

In Gareth Edwards' 2016 studio-sanctioned fan film "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," a group of brave Rebels defy their superior officers, go rogue, and steal the blueprints for the Death Star, a planet-killing machine run by the evil Empire. The thieves are all killed in the process (spoilers?), but their mission will prove successful. "Rogue One" doesn't make explicit what will be done with the Death Star blueprints, but the filmmakers made the assumption that everyone in the audience had already seen George Lucas' 1977 "Star Wars" film, and trusted them to connect the dots. "Rogue One" also inspired a spinoff TV series called "Andor," which many critics have said is one of the best dramas to come from the "Star Wars" universe in years.

The film charts 30 years in the lives of visionary architect László Toth and his wife, Erzsébet, who flee post-war Europe in 1947 and witness the birth of modern America. László initially endures poverty and indignity, but the architect’s genius soon catches the attention of charming industrialist Harrison Lee Van Buren, whose dark influence threatens to destroy everything László and his wife have built.
The cast is completed by Raffey Cassidy (“White Noise”), Isaach De Bankolé (“Casino Royale”), Alessandro Nivola (“The Many Saints of Newark”), Stacy Martin (“Nymphomaniac Vol I”), Emma Laird (“Mayor of Kingstown”), Jonathan Hyde (“Titanic”) and Peter Polycarpou...

The characters weren't terribly interesting, the dialogue was clunky at best, and the bland story was a frustratingly foregone conclusion -- the end scenes of "Rogue One" link directly to the first scenes of "Star Wars" -- but Edwards' film accrued...
