The adventures of René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo’s potion-supping Gaul creation Asterix and his friends are well loved, since their debut on the pages of Pilote magazine in 1959, all the way up until this new animated feature based on the enduring madcap French creation. In the 60 year history of the series, there have been a plethora of internationally made motion pictures based on the stories and characters, including 4 live-action outings starring Gérard Depardieu and 10 animated films. This latest one, The Secret of the Magic Potion, being released both in cinemas and on Sky Cinema, is hardly the standard barer for all Asterix films but is a fun family flick all the same.
The film centres more on druid Getafix (John Innes), who is faced with finding a replacement after age may be catching up with him. Accompanying him on this important quest are Asterix (Ken Kramer) and Obelix (C. Ernst Harth...

Researchers have been finding quite a few disturbing examples of Nature's mad scientists lately – from a wasp that performs brain surgery on live cockroaches, to the fungus that turns living ants into undead slaves. But today's bizarre example comes from the plant kingdom, in the form of a parasitic bacterium that can turn a flowering plant into a kind of zombie to do its bidding. That's right, you'll never play a game of Plants vs. Zombies quite the same way again... seriously, who exactly are the bad guys now? Photo: Jic Photography This creepy phenomenon is being studied by Saskia Hogenhout of the John Innes Centre in Norwich, U.K., who found that parasitic bacteria called phytoplasma can turn a host plant sterile. This causes it to lose its flowers and replace them with leaves (a condition called “witch's broom”), which in turn makes it more attractive to insects called leafhoppers,...

Washington, May 24: Tomatoes, believed to be the most popular fruit in the world, could be made to taste better and have a longer shelf life.
Professor Cathie Martin from the John Innes Centre and her colleagues researched tomatoes enriched in anthocyanin, a natural pigment that confers high antioxidant capacity.
The purple Gm tomatoes have been found to prolong the lives of cancer-prone mice and in the new findings they have double the shelf life of normal tomatoes from an average of 21 days to 48 days.
Yang Zhang, lead author from the John Innes Centre, said that post-harvest losses because of rotting are so serious for growers and supermarkets that even an increased shelf life of 1 day will make a big difference.

Given the very touchy subject matter of Jon Amiel's Creation, many people made a scene before the film's U.S. release. Needless to say that the film was very anticipated up here in Canada. However, Creation fails to live up to its expectations.
The story brings us before the day when English naturalist Charles Darwin (Paul Bettany) had decided to send his controversial book On the Origin of Species to a publisher. In his research, Darwin developed a new theory on evolution. He came to the conclusion that there's no such thing as a plan devised by "God" for human beings, animals and the world we live in. Moreover, he added that some species survived through time because they adapted themselves to their environment and are stronger than other creatures surrounding them.
