A group of former students, faculty and community members is fighting the closure of the Los Angeles campus of The American Academy of Dramatic Arts, which revealed in April that it was closing its doors at the end of the 2024-25 school year.
Leaders of the 140-year-old institution, which opened the L.A. campus in 2000 on part of the old Charlie Chaplin Studios on La Brea Avenue, blames the pandemic, a decrease in enrollment for smaller institutions and “national birthrate calculations” for the closure. Incoming students this fall will have the option to complete their first year in L.A. and transfer to the New York campus for their second year.
“Enrollments are down across the country and national birthrate calculations and other key data show that colleges, especially smaller institutions, must adapt to changing conditions,” according to a statement released in April by President Susan Zech and Board Chair Robert E. Wankel.

Wally Kurth Leads Double Life

He started playing Justin Kiriakis on Days of Our Lives in 1987. He left the show in 1991 but returned in 2009.

General Hospital won big at the 51st Daytime Emmys.
While only Robert Gossett won among the nominated actors, the ABC soap took home Best Drama, Outstanding Writing Team, and Best Directing Team trophies.
It is good news for the show, but the results puzzled the viewers.
For several years, there have been complaints about the writing, the seemingly random actors they hire, and more.
Winning for the writing category against soaps like The Young and the Restless, Days of our Lives, and The Bold and the Beautiful, which all had phenomenal storylines, is confusing even to us.
Here’s what some General Hospital viewers had to say about the big sweep at the Daytime Emmys.

The 51st Daytime Emmys brought fashion and wins to the stage.
CBS hosted the event, allowing it to be televised live for viewers to revel in what their favorite soap stars were wearing and what they were doing.
The nominations this year were all over the board, and while we had our predictions, we weren’t sure who would actually take home the coveted awards.
In a year affected by writers’ strikes, scribes wrote some of the material the actors worked with and did a good job making it their own.
While there are varying opinions about who won each category, only one can take home the statue.
Here’s which soaps won each category tailored to the genre.
Who won a Daytime Emmy?
Some categories didn’t offer an actor or actress for a particular soap. But without further do, here is a list of winners in the soap-centric categories.

Fortunately, IATSE leadership met with the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Friday afternoon and were able to reach an agreement two hours before showtime.
Following a corny but cute opening number performed by The Talk hosts Amanda Kloots and Jerry O’Connell, Entertainment Tonight’s Kevin Frazier and Nichelle Turner kicked off the live show by singling out “royalty” in the house — Dick Van Dyke, who would end up winning...

“General Hospital” led night one of the 51st annual Daytime Emmy Awards, winning four prizes — including the outstanding daytime drama Emmy. “General Hospital” won the top daytime drama award for the fourth year in a row.
“Gh” took an early lead as proceedings got underway, including writing, directing and supporting actor performance in a daytime drama series (Robert Gossett as Marshall Ashford). While accepting the honor for daytime drama directing, the show’s team paid tribute to Johnny Wactor, the former “Gh” performer who was recently killed.
Besides Gossett from “Gh,” daytime acting awards were spread out among several shows, with CBS’ “The Young and the Restless” winning two — for lead actress (Michelle Stafford as Phyllis Summers) and supporting actress (Courtney Hope as Sally Spectra). CBS’ “The Bold and the Beautiful” won the drama actor for Thorsten Kaye as Ridge Forrester, who also won last year.

“The Young and the Restless” will get back in the winner’s circle at the 51st Annual Daytime Emmy Awards scheduled for Friday night, June 7. That’s according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users who have placed their bets here in our predictions center. Do you agree the top-rated CBS serial will be named the year’s best soap?
“Y&r” will have to overcome “General Hospital,” which has been on a hot streak, winning for the last three years in a row. In total, “Gh” has won Best Drama Series 16 times, more than any other soap in history. “Y&r” is next in line with 11, including back-to-back wins in 2019 and 2020. No other daytime drama has achieved double-digit victories. In fact, none even come close. The next most awarded serials are the now-defunct “As the World Turns” and the still-running “Days of Our Lives” with four apiece.

It’s almost time for The 51st annual Daytime Emmy Awards, which occur this Friday.
The show will air on CBS so daytime fans can see who takes home the coveted awards first-hand.
In April, the Daytime Emmy nominations gave soap fans a lot to talk about, especially when it came to Dick Van Dyke’s historic nomination.
As the award ceremony draws near, we think it’s time to predict who will win in the soap categories.
To be honest, every single nominee deserves to be a winner, but only one will take home the statue on Friday night.
Here’s who we think will win the Daytime Emmy Awards.
Who will take home the acting awards at the Daytime Emmys?
Finola Hughes, as Anna Devane on General Hospital, is our pick for Lead Actress. General Hospital fans know Finola turned in killer performances when Anna shot Charlotte (Scarlett Fernandez...

More change in the writers room at General Hospital.
Patrick Mulcahey — who was promoted in January to help fill the void left by co-head writers Chris Van Etten and Dan O’Connor — is no longer on the soap’s head-writing team, Deadline has confirmed.
Elizabeth Korte, who was upped alongside Mulcahey, will become the sole head writer for now. Korte has been a part of the Gh family since 1992.
Mulcahey is a longtime vet of daytime dramas, having started in the biz on Search For Tomorrow. He wrote for Loving, Santa Barbara, Guiding Light and The Bold and the Beautiful. He first started penning episodes for Gh in 1996.
Episodes that he crafted with Korte will air through mid-summer. A spokeswoman for the show declined comment.
In December, Gh took the prize for Outstanding Daytime Drama Series. It also racked up four Emmys in the acting categories and another in the Outstanding Directing Team category.
The Buzz first reported the news.

On Friday, May 10, the cast and crew of “General Hospital” gathered at Prospect Studios in Hollywood, where the award-winning soap opera is taped, as ABC Entertainment executives honored the series by dedicating its studio, Stage 4, as “The General Hospital Stage.”
“This event was supposed to take place in April, 2023 but due to a multitude of reasons was postponed. Well, we finally celebrated the legacy and history of ‘General Hospital’ with a stage dedication placard that will live on forever!” noted Nathan Varni, the ABC Current Series Executive in charge of production for the daytime drama series, in a post on Facebook.
Varni added, “Thanks to everyone involved with the show for all your hard work, dedication and passion for continuing to keep this show alive and running! Congrats to all involved!” We deeply admire and appreciate everyone who works around the clock to bring this series to life 255 days a year!

The Daytime Emmy Awards are less than two months away, and the nominations came in hot — or not, depending on who you ask.
Typically, General Hospital viewers see many actors nominated in the various categories, often more than one vying for the same award.
This year, though, that doesn’t appear to be the case.
And, honestly, we are shocked.
General Hospital doesn’t have anyone in the Lead Actor or Supporting Actress category.
However, the ABC soap has nominees for Lead Actress, Supporting Actor, and Guest Appearance.
Which General Hospital actors were nominated?
The Lead Actress category landed two General Hospital nominees. Finola Hughes (Anna) and Cynthia Watros (Nina) were nominated.
Robert Gossett (Marshall) is the lone Gh nomination for the Supporting Actor category.
For Guest Performance, Alley Mills (Heather) is nominated.
This is a solid group of nominees, each earning their place among the other actors in their categories.

General Hospital spoilers for next week’s episodes of the ABC soap tease there’s plenty of explaining to do.
Jason’s (Steve Burton) arrival in Port Charles has everyone confused — most of all Sam (Kelly Monaco), who can’t understand why he didn’t find his way back home — until now.
Dante’s (Dominic Zamprogna) life hangs in the balance, and Jason’s part in what happened is being questioned.
The little information viewers learned about Jason’s connection to John “Jagger” Cates had viewers’ jaws on the floor, but the mission he is supposed to complete remains unclear.
As much of the show focuses on Jason’s return, more information will slowly emerge. Being held at Quantico is a big deal, and something tells us there will be more twists and turns as this storyline unfolds.

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) announced the winners of the 50th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards during an in-person ceremony, hosted by Entertainment Tonight’s Kevin Frazier and Nischelle Turner (whose show won the prize for best entertainment news series), that aired on CBS and streamed on Paramount+.
ABC’s General Hospital led with six wins, including for best daytime drama series.
The Kelly Clarkson Show won its second consecutive Daytime Emmy for best daytime talk series, as did Clarkson for best daytime talk series host.
The ceremony was originally scheduled to air June 17, but was postponed due to the Writers Guild strike. During the event, NATAS chairman Terry Reilly noted that it was the first major awards show since the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes ended in September and November, respectively.
The show opened with a tribute to General Hospital star Sonya Eddy, who died in December.
