The beginning of "A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors" is arguably one of the most relatable opening horror sequences for any disenfranchised youth filled with teenage angst. Introducing our traumatized hero, Kristen (Patricia Arquette), the credits play as Angelo Badalamenti's score transitions into Dokken's "Into the Fire" as Kristen mainlines coffee grinds to stay awake. She's building a papier-maché house of the boarded up structure she sees in her nightmares. Immediately, you empathize with her. She looks like a friend in need (who could also use another pack of cigarettes).
Arquette was the perfect casting choice to be a Nancy for a different generation. As a result, "Dream Warriors" director Chuck Russell had to make an "Elm Street" movie for a different set of teens who would respond to something bigger, badder, and more ambitious than Wes Craven's original and "Freddy's Revenge." The practical effects...

Shopping costs an arm and a leg – literally – in Jim Wynorski‘s Chopping Mall, a cult classic horror movie from 1986 that horror master James Wan happens to be a big fan of.
Speaking with Slash Film this week, Wan expressed interest in someday putting his own stamp on Chopping Mall, set in a shopping mall (naturally) and centered on killer robots.
Wan tells the outlet, “I have many horror films that I think are just fun that I love, and I’m pretty sure the horror community shares them with me. I love movies like ‘Chopping Mall.’ I love ‘Night of the Creeps.’ These, to me, are just sort of fun horror films that I would love to be able to dive into one day, or do them but with the way that I make my films.”

Sleep can literally kill you. That's what makes "A Nightmare on Elm Street" so downright spooky. Upon reading a mind-blowing story about a young Cambodian child, who was terrified to sleep and then died while apparently dreaming, filmmaker Wes Craven conjured up a sleep demon for a screenplay. Freddy Krueger was born out of a real-life wave of similar incidents that swept across America in the 1980s. The 1984 slasher film, produced by New Line's Robert Shaye, saved the company from disaster and put it immovably on the map. It reinvented the slasher genre at a time when the horror subgenre was on its way out. By leaning into the universal human experience of sleep, it brought genuine fear to the surface again.
In the coming years, Freddy Krueger has haunted our dreams across six sequels, a vs. movie with Jason Voorhees, and a 2010 remake, starring Rooney Mara and Jackie Earle Haley as Freddy himself.

I know that goes against the idea of spoilers, but a little information about the plot or the characters can sometimes be the dash of hot sauce in the ramen noodles. It can set it apart from being collectively associated with a particular type of formulaic comfort genre that might have lost its flavor.
Case in point, when “Grabbers’ came out, knowing that being drunk was the only defense against the creatures, made me elevate it above any other contemporary creature flick that I had access to at the time. Then again, there are films, and in...

Oscar nominee John Hawkes’ musical talent is on full display in his band’s music video for “Down With Mary,” which is exclusively available to view on TheWrap. The acoustic melody from Rodney & John — a band consisting of co-vocalist and guitarist Rodney Eastman, drummer Danny Thompson, violinist Korey Simeone and bassist Mike Lerman — was featured in 2016 drama “Too Late,” putting the tune written by Hawkes in contention for Best Original Song at the Oscars. When it comes to horror and sci-fi movies from 1986, there are several milestone titles that always come to mind first: Aliens, The Fly, Blue Velvet, Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives, Manhunter, Poltergeist II: The Other Side, or even Psycho III, just to name a few. But like any great year of cinema, there are always a few underrated gems that get overshadowed along the way and should receive a little extra love. Here are six films from 1986 that I think deserve to be on every genre fan’s radar:
F/X: A movie about a special effects artist who gets mixed up in a government conspiracy, at a time when practical effects were in their heyday? Yes, please. F/X isn’t a film I hear a ton of folks talk about, but it has been on cable a lot lately, which means I’ve spent a few nights revisiting it,...

Actors Nicole Shipley and Atli Oskar Fjalarsson have been added to the cast of the upcoming thriller film Sable.
Shipley has been in several films (Club Lingerie, Guardians of The Galaxy, Jailbait) and Fjalarsson is an Icelandic actor that was written up in Variety as one of the rising stars from Europe.
When speaking about the actors, Director Michael Matteo Rossi told us "Having known Nicole for a few years now and having worked with her on a past film; I was indeed thrilled to have her come on board. After I cast Nicole, I thought of Atli (who I had met somewhat recently) to play the boyfriend and they had fantastic chemistry together on set and were a joy to work with. The interesting thing about both of them is that they are young stars truly on the rise and really added to the overall quality of the film.

Synopsis: The greatest fear any woman has comes to fruition when author Jennifer Hills (Sarah Butler) moves to a quiet Louisiana town to complete her novel before its deadline. She took her first misstep five minutes into her supposedly pleasant stay when she brushed off the advances of the town’s young lothario Johnny (Jeff Branson) at a gas station. Johnny would not stand for this type of treatment, especially in front of his two equally twisted friends...

Title: Spork Directed By: J.B. Ghuman Jr. Starring: Savannah Stehlin, Sydney Park, Rachel G. Fox, Michael William Arnold, Oana Gregory, Kevin Chung, Keith David, Rodney Eastman Sure, there’s no harm in getting a laugh out of the classic tasteless poop and penis jokes once in a while, but ultimately, they’re thoughtless cheap shots. Spork on the other hand, is quite the opposite, a film that earns its giggles through very calculated efforts including a unique story, equally innovative and appropriate production techniques and, most importantly, a main character who’s incredibly odd, yet wildly endearing all at the same time. If Napoleon Dynamite‘s Napoleon and Deb lived happily ever after and...

The first season of Breakout Kings is over half-way through and nothing has compromised its winning blueprint: set a fugitive on the loose, debrief the convicts and let Lloyd’s analysis pave the way for the manhunt. Hopefully they can minimize the casualties before they bring the man or woman back behind bars. Last night, they got to do both.
“Fun with Chemistry” showed what kind of explosive activity results in mixing two volatile personalities. A spunky and bubbly civilian named Starla (Scout Taylor-Compton) posed as a woman meeting a convict in person for the first time. She had stricken a relationship online and after exchanging their pictures they made the big step on a weekend visiting day. Next to Starla and Barry’s table was Marlon “Mars” O’Connell (Rodney Eastman) who was waiting for his mother to arrive. After rehashing their long-standing argument, Mars quickly turns a knife...

At a time when remakes – like them or not – are status quo for the movie industry, few films achieve a level of being anywhere near as good as their originals. This is especially true for the horror genre. After so many still-births and disappointments (Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, Last House on the Left, to name but a few), fans have longed for someone to take a beloved film from the past and improve it, updating it to fit a more modern sensibility. Many have tried… most fail.
Enter director Steven R. Monroe and his re-imagining of the exploitation classic I Spit On Your Grave (review here) (Blu-ray/DVD review here). Long whispered about by fans as a cornerstone of late ’70s grindhouse fare, I Spit On Your Grave is admittedly a tough row to hoe. The film tells the story of a woman living alone in a...

This is the Pure Movies review of I Spit On Your Grave, directed by Steven R. Monroe and starring Sarah Butler, Jeff Branson, Andrew Howard, Daniel Franzese, Rodney Eastman and Chad Lindberg. Written by Natalie Peck for Pure Movies. The original I Spit On Your Grave, initially titled Day of the Women by writer/director Meir Zarchi, was one of the most controversial rape-revenge films of the exploitation genre. It told the story of Jennifer Hills, a writer trying to finish her latest novel in an isolated lakeside house in the American south. She attracts the unwanted attention of four locals, who proceed to terrorise and repeatedly rape her, and then leave her for dead. After recovering physically, if not psychologically, from her ordeal, Jennifer wreaks revenge on her rapists one-by-one in a bloody and biblical fashion - Day of the Women indeed.

The remake of I Spit on Your Grave was released on DVD and Blu-ray February 8th; yet, the promotional campaign continues! In this latest clip, director Steven R. Monroe also talks about the appeal of voyeurism and this is a film clip that was not released with the digital versions. Have a look at the four minute clip below, and check out the 28Dla review of this title here: I Spit on Your Grave Review (2011).

In the past few years there has been an influx of remakes in the horror genre. We all know that’s not a good thing but unfortunately the mainstream fans line the aisles and spend the bucks that allows this to continue to happen. It is well documented that I have not ever been nor will I ever be a fan of these remakes. I will say now that I am man enough to admit when I’m wrong. I guess the formula needs to be correct for a successful remake. Then comes walking in I Spit on Your Grave. Read more to see what I thought of this remake of the 1978 film of the same name.
The tale of I Spit on Your Grave is one that all fathers dread when they have a daughter, as it is worse than anything that Liam Neeson’s daughter in Taken could ever imagine.

There are several horror titles releasing on DVD and Blu-Ray today. Young author heads out to a remote cabin to work on her latest novel, but is instead greeted by a group of small town thugs who repeatedly rape her and then try to kill her in an effort to cover up their crime. However, she manages to escape. One month later, she returns to execute her revenge employing methods that recall exactly what they did to her.
Sure, the violence and rape sequences of the I Spit On Your Grave remake are downright offensive, but there is other ways to offend an audience member. The contempt that this remake has for women is offensive. The film's take on retarded characters is offensive. The portrayal of small town living and the faces that populate these areas is offensive.

The 1978 controversial film gets a modern day redo. It has some improvements to the storyline, but still covers the same horrific ground. It also seems to draw some influence from more modern torture porn films, but it.s not like the villains don.t deserve what they receive. Jennifer Hills (Sarah Butler) travels from the big city to an isolated cabin in the country. She.s going to work on her novel in the secluded location. She asks for directions from gas station manager Johnny (Jeff Branson) and his ham-fisted attempts at flirting don.t go over well. He.s laughed at by station regulars Stanley (Daniel Franzese), who videotapes everything, and Andy (Rodney Eastman). When she finds the cabin, she...

We are very giddy this week because a couple of titles that are near and dear to our hearts will be available for you folks to take home.
While we had gone on ad nauseam about the spectacular second Paranormal Activity demonic home invasion film, you can now watch it in your own house over and over again. Your home surveillance camera videos may never be the same again! We are also treated to not one, but both I Spit on Your Graves - the original from the 1970s and the new remake of a gritty film which may be disturbing to some but nonetheless empowering.
The other titles released this week from our genre may not be as beloved, but they are worth mentioning for the completists out there. Maybe they make better sense when viewed in the safety of one's home.
