- Very fond of horse racing, he initially wanted to be a jockey until he found it interfered with his eating habits.
- Appeared in four Oscar Best Picture nominees: Lady for a Day (1933), It Happened One Night (1934), Libeled Lady (1936) and The Good Earth (1937). It Happened One Night won Best Picture.

His highest profile role was that of Claudette Colbert's irascible millionaire father in Frank Capra's 1934 Best Picture winner, It Happened One Night.
