Released in 2018 the Australian alien invasion film Occupation caught a lot of people off guard with the amount of action and the quality of the effects it produced on a low budget. Now the sequel Occupation: Rainfall is here, the success of the original allowing it the luxury of a $25,000,000 dollar budget. That’s about one-tenth of the Hollywood blockbusters it’s competing with. Can it hold its own against the competition, or is resistance to the Disney Empire futile?

Roger Monk.
When screenwriter Roger Monk was offered a gig on the Aquarius Films/Sbs crime caper The Unusual Suspects, he seized the opportunity to channel his favourite film, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown.
Tonally he saw similarities with Pedro Almodóvar’s Oscar-winning 1988 black comedy-drama about a woman who embarks on a strange journey to try to discover why lover suddenly left her without any explanation.
Set in Sydney’s affluent Eastern suburbs, The Unusual Suspects revolves around the theft of a $10 million necklace from self-made Filipino businesswoman Roxanne Waters’ home during her twins’ birthday party,
The suspects include including socialite Sara Beasley, whose life is crumbling fast, and her long-suffering nanny, Evie De La Rosa, a godmother of sorts for other Filipino domestic workers.
“The show is about female frenemies, disparate characters who come together through circumstance and become friends,” Monk tell If.

“This is what happens when you make up stories,” one character says about three-fourths of the way through the confidently ambitious “The Second,” and the line is a succinct summation of the deceptively deep goings-on beneath the film’s faintly sordid surface. The maiden project developed and produced under the Screen Queensland Originals program in partnership with the streaming service Stan (the film is playing commercially now and will commence it’s Stan stand July 20), “The Second” is a sexy and satisfying thriller that toys with time, memory and the provocative side of storytelling.

An Australian film will be release in the Us and Australia simultaneously, with the aim of getting international traction.
Jump Street Films, with production company Duo Art Productions, will release outback neo-noir film Swerve, written and directed by Craig Lahiff, in the Us through Cohen Media Group, the same company that handled Oranges and Sunshine in the Us.
Helen Leake, head of Duo Art Productions told Encore: “Our Australian market is so tricky I thought why not start overseas and bring it back home. If you fail in your home market you have a problem so we’re just quietly getting good sales overseas. We’ve sold Germany, UK, and we’re about to close with Benelux, all of which are happy to wait for the Us release.
“We have to balance this tightrope really well and break through the little film syndrome.”

Face to Face director Michael Rymer talks about his new film, working on a low budget, and the Australian film system’s accountability.
To sci-fi nerds around the world Michael Rymer might best be known as one of the driving forces behind Battlestar Galactica’s resurrection, directing 22 episodes and producing 40 episodes. To Australian audiences, he directed Angel Baby starring Jacqueline McKenzie and John Lynch.
Rymer’s new film, Face to Face is an adaptation of a David Williamson play about conflict resolution in the Australian workplace. It’s a tightly woven script based on real conflict resolution transcripts. “It has big ideas and it’s a microcosm of Australia, dealing with workplace relations, race, sex and class. I don’t believe it’s a small film, it’s a big film done inexpensively.”
Despite names like Sigrid Thornton, Vince Colosimo and Matthew Newton, the film was made on a low...

If the list of awardees below is long, it’s because the Newport Beach Film Festival screens over 400 films from more than 45 countries. With 50,000 visitors to the festival each year, part of the success of the program is its ability to draw full houses of appreciative audiences.
Opening with Michael C. Hall, Lucy Liu and Peter Fonda in “East Fifth Bliss,” the festival closes with “A Beginner’s Guide to Endings.” “Beginner’s Guide” stars Harvey Keitel as a gambling man at the end of his tether, and his three sons (Scott Caan, Paulo Costanzo and Jason Jones) who soon learn that their father signed them up for unsafe drug tests when they were kids.
In between the go and the whoa were panels on directing, music composition and a master class on screenwriting given by Aaron Sorkin. Oh, and those 400 films. For a highlights list of the films at...
