With their newest film The Idea of You, a May-December romance based on the novel by Robinne Lee, filmmaker Michael Showalter and producer Jordana Mollick appear to have hit the zeitgeist yet again.
Garnering glowing reviews in its SXSW world premiere, the crowd-pleaser clocked 125M global views across social with its first trailer — the most for any Amazon original streaming movie to date — on the way to its launch today on Prime Video.
Anne Hathaway stars as Solène, who meets cute with Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine), the lead singer of internationally famous boy band August Moon, while at Coachella with her daughter. Thereafter, the pair set off on a globe-trotting romantic journey, complicated by what the world, and Solène’s own family, think of the situation.

When the young women lock eyes, a quiet intimacy blooms. Elodie (Millie Bobby Brown) doesn’t know the unnamed girl meeting her gaze from a balcony some distance away, but she feels connected to her. Their smiles awaken flashes of mutual recognition. They share a milky complexion and gentle regard. But this stranger is more than Elodie’s mirror; she is an eerie omen of the young princess’ fate.
In Damsel, Elodie tries to escape the conventions of her own story. Trapped in a world of manners and expectations, the princess seeks adventure and longs to prove her independence. The conceit is familiar: A handful of recent films (and TV shows) have given audiences royal women eagerly subverting the tropes of medieval romances. Disney’s Brave introduced Merida, a fiery archer who brought a more overt contemporary feminism to the entertainment conglomerate’s brand. The Princess starred Joey King as...

On the day of Geraldine Viswanathan’s THR interview, the actress is in the middle of an overstuffed week of promotion for her starring role in Ethan Coen’s latest film, Drive-Away Dolls, which, until that point, was the biggest thing to happen to her career. But Viswanathan, 28, also was just cast in Thunderbolts, Marvel Studios’ next tentpole. She replaces Ayo Edebiri, who had to depart for scheduling reasons but offered her an “epic” handoff. “Ayo and I go way back, and she’s actually looking after my car right now in L.A.,” says Viswanathan. “That Kia Nero is the love of my life, and Ayo is one of my closest friends. She was really instrumental in my decision to take the role, and it’s been nice to be able to talk about it with somebody who knows what it is.”

You haven't seen the "Pitch Perfect" movies? A-ca-scuse me? That's a reference you'll get when you finally sit down to watch the 2012 comedy set in the world of competitive college a cappella. For the uninitiated, that means making music without the assistance of instruments. It all comes from their mouths!
Oscar nominee Anna Kendrick ("Up in the Air") stars in "Pitch Perfect" as Beca Mitchell, an aspiring DJ who has reluctantly enrolled at Barden University, where her father works as a professor and desperately pushes her to venture out of her comfort zone and actually have what he considers a meaningful college experience. If she still hates it, then he'll let her go to California to follow her DJ dreams.
While at Barden, Beca ends up being recruited by the Barden Bellas, the university's all-female a cappella group led by Aubrey Posen (Anna Camp) and Chloe Beale (Brittany Snow), which...

Camila Cabello swapped the Grammy and VMA stages for the snowy streets of Park City to promote her new indie drama “Rob Peace,” which premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
In the movie, Cabello plays the girlfriend of Rob Peace (“Tulsa King” actor Jay Will). He’s a promising Yale student who grew up in a crime-ridden New Jersey neighborhood. But his bright future dims after he’s forced to sell drugs to support his incarcerated father’s legal battles. It’s a terrible, true story based on the biography “The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace” by Jeff Hobbs, who was Peace’s college roommate.
“I felt a story like this needed to be told,” Cabello said at the Variety Studio presented by Audible. “People have told stories like this in an overly simplistic way… people coming from difficult circumstances; binary ways of looking at success and failure.

Contrary to what you might think based on the plethora of Christmas films and TV series that flooded the streaming landscape recently, we're only now heading into the final month of 2023 and the winter holiday bonanza that comes with them. For Netflix, in particular, December is a time when it pulls out the big guns, tempting its subscribers with an eclectic blend of prestige television, awards season contenders, and crowd-pleasers. This year, that includes the end of the royal drama with "The Crown" season 6, part 2, Bradley Cooper going for the gold (again) with his Leonard Bernstein biopic "Maestro," and whatever the hell Zack Snyder has cooked up for us with the first half of his two-part "Star Wars"-inspired cosmic epic, "Rebel Moon -- Part One: A Child of Fire."

For his first “Late Night” following the end of the strike, Seth Meyers delivered an extended “A Closer Look” commentary rather than book any guests. But before launching into that, he started with a heartfelt message of gratitude to friends and family, fans, fellow late night hosts and especially his writers.
And then in what is this week’s hottest trend on late night television, he did a speed run through all the news he missed while on hiatus because of the writers’ strike.
Meyers started by thanking leadership at the Writers Guild of America for their “sacrifice” during the strike, noting the financial and personal struggles they endured leading to “the very fair deal that all the writers deserved.”
“I have friends on the [WGA] negotiating committee. Friends like Mike Schur, friends like Kay Cannon, who are not just talented writers but people who again sacrificed their time to work for all writers,...

Seth Meyers opened his first Late Night show in five months with a long list of thank yous.
The comedian returns to NBC with an hour-long version of A Closer Look, his political segment, in which he touches on all of the news that broke over the summer.
But before he got into Trump indictments and lumpy pillows (see below), Meyers said that he was “grateful” to be back.
“I never take this show for granted but being away from it for as long as I’ve been away from it really hits home how much I love having this as a workplace,” he said.
He thanked the WGA negotiating committee, which includes his friends Mike Schur and Kay Cannon, for their sacrifices to ensure a “fair” deal for the writers. He also apologized for pestering these friends during negotiations.
“I am so happy to be back in a room with my writers.

Late night was back in full force on Monday night, and the hosts of “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert,” “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live” and “Late Night With Seth Meyers” were all expected to have something to say about it in their opening monologues.

The Writers Guild of America’s announcement that it has reached a potentially strike-ending deal with Hollywood studios was met with cheers by entertainment union members, including the union that it shared picket lines with for months, SAG-AFTRA.
“SAG-AFTRA congratulates the WGA on reaching a tentative agreement with the AMPTP after 146 days of incredible strength, resiliency and solidarity on the picket lines,” the actors’ guild said in a statement.
A more barbed statement came from Lindsay Dougherty, Principal Officer of Teamsters Local 399, who praised the WGA for their resilience while swiping at the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which represents the studios in labor talks.
“The militancy of the writers holding the line and hitting the pavement exemplified their unwavering commitment to their core issues,” Dougherty wrote “Their fight has also inspired a renewed solidarity among Hollywood workers that will live long past this bargaining cycle.”

Striking writers and other members of Hollywood are calling the tentative deal reached by the Writers Guild and the AMPTP on Sunday a “victory.”
The deal was announced Sunday, which was 146 days after the writers strike began on May 2 and following five back-to-back days of negotiations that ran through the weekend.
In its message to members, the union’s negotiating committee asked for patience on details of the pact: “What remains now is for our staff to make sure everything we have agreed to is codified in final contract language. And though we are eager to share the details of what has been achieved with you, we cannot do that until the last ‘i’ is dotted.”

The promotion of Donna Langley, the head of the Universal film studio, to chief content officer overseeing all of NBCUniversal’s entertainment divisions, is Comcast President Mike Cavanagh’s first big decision in his tenure running the media business directly. It’s a savvy move to advance a quietly accomplished leader while other major studios are struggling, many insiders told TheWrap.
“In a time when these studios are a mess, it’s a safe move,” a producer told TheWrap about promoting Langley, referring to the box office woes and internal challenges at rivals like Bob Iger’s Walt Disney Company and David Zaslav’s Warner Bros. Discovery.
“It seemed inevitable,” one top talent agent told TheWrap. “There were rumors for a while that she wanted more responsibility and to move further up the Comcast hierarchy.”

The millennial women-led series is dead. Long live the millennials.
It wasn’t exactly surprising when Freeform’s beloved critically acclaimed “Single Drunk Female” was canceled this month after just two seasons and immediately pulled from Hulu. Sure, Freeform touted the sitcom as the highest-rated original comedy during the New York City Season 2 premiere before the series returned with all new episodes on Hulu in April. But its cancellation is just one of the many reminders that networks don’t invest long-term in women-fronted shows that focus on “messy” millennial women.
While we pour one out for “Single Drunk Female,” it’s best to trace the series back to its roots with Lena Dunham and executive producer Jenni Konner’s explosively disruptive HBO series “Girls,” which celebrated its 10-year anniversary in 2022. After that massive hit, why has TV abandoned the generation of people who grew up watching “Girls”?

Amanda Seyfried is ready to return to her comedy roots with one caveat: The Writers Guild of America strike must conclude.
Seyfried is set to star in ensemble comedy film “My Ex-Friend’s Wedding” alongside Ariana DeBose, Megan Stalter, Liza Koshy, and Chloe Fineman. However, the ongoing WGA strike has pushed back production.
“I mean, we’ve got to collectively win these strikes, and then I can tell you something about it,” Seyfried told IndieWire while at “The Crowded Room” premiere. “But I can’t now because it’s way too funny and we’re not shooting it right now.”
She added of the film, “Back to my roots, you know? I’m so excited.”
“My Ex-Friend’s Wedding” is directed by Kay Cannon (“Blockers”) from a script co-written by Ashley Rodger and “Daisy Jones & the Six” author Taylor Jenkins Reid. The film was picked up by Sony in March 2023 following a bidding war.

As the ripple effects of the writers’ strike play out across Hollywood, the Writers Guild of America has notified studios that it will not be running FYC ads for the upcoming Emmy season on its website or in email communications to members, two insiders have told TheWrap.
“After deliberation with our legal department, all FYC production is now suspended,” read an email from the guild to studio awards teams obtained by TheWrap. “We understand that this may be frustrating and that you have media already planned, but due to the strike rules, we cannot continue.”
The guild is offering studios who have already bought ad space the choice between a full refund or credit towards future “for your consideration” ads after the strike concludes.

Billy Porter is preparing to portray the author and civil rights activist James Baldwin in an upcoming biopic.
He will also co-write the untitled movie with Dan McCabe, which will be adapted from the 1994 book “James Baldwin: A Biography” by David Leeming. An emeritus professor of English at the University of Connecticut, Leeming was well-versed in the world of Baldwin as his friend of 25 years as well as his assistant.
Porter says it has been a career-long dream to tell the story of Baldwin on film. Born in Harlem in 1924, Baldwin was a Black gay writer whose influential works include “Go Tell It on the Mountain,” “Notes of a Native Son” and “If Beale Street Could Talk.” In addition to writing, Baldwin fought for racial justice in the U.S. civil rights movement. Much like the beginning of a Congressional hearing on a hot potato political topic, expectations for the first day of talks between the WGA and AMPTP were high, but largely began with formalities.
The two sides came together in Sherman Oaks this morning around 11 a.m. as large swathes of the TV and film industry wondered what the outcome would be for the most highly anticipated contract talks in 15 years.
The first hour and half was dedicated to opening statements with both sides, the writers and the studios, laying out the story or narrative of their proposals, which were submitted last week.
Neither side is giving out full details, but sources suggest that the initial vibe from the room is that, despite all of the talk of a potential strike, a deal can be reached.
The initial conversations were described as “cordial” and “level-headed” with some highlighting a different negotiating style from Ellen Stutzman,...

The Writers Guild of America officially began negotiations on Monday with the studios, as the union seeks to increase compensation and set minimum standards for the size and duration of writers rooms.
Over the decades, bargaining has become a highly ritualized process, with each step carefully scripted. The guild has already told members that the initial round of talks will last for two weeks.
At that point, the WGA will advise the membership on “what next steps we believe are necessary,” said writer-director Kay Cannon in a video posted on Friday.
If it’s anything like the last contentious negotiation, in 2017, the guild will seek a strike authorization vote, which would give negotiators leverage for the final round of talks.
As of now, it’s expected that there will be a two-week break, and that negotiations will resume on April 17, leaving two more weeks for negotiations before the May 1 contract expiration.

“During these first two weeks, your Negotiating Committee and guild staff will be meeting with the companies’ representatives at the AMPTP headquarters in Sherman Oaks,” Kay Cannon, a member of the guild’s Negotiating Committee, tells members in the video. “We will be focused on presenting our proposals to the studios, and you won’t be hearing from us unless there is something of consequence to report.

Jason Sudeikis's love life has been a hot topic in recent years. After splitting from Olivia Wilde in November 2020, the "Ted Lasso" star was caught up in some messy drama with the "Don't Worry Darling" director and her former boyfriend Harry Styles. It involved a custody battle between Sudeikis and Wilde, as well as rumors that Wilde left Sudeikis for the "As It Was" singer.
Despite everything that happened, though, it seems the exes have finally put the past behind them. After Wilde and Styles went their separate ways this past November, Wilde was seen embracing her ex-fiancé in photos obtained by Page Six two months later.
While Sudeikis's relationship with Wilde has made countless headlines, she isn't the only famous woman he's dated. In fact, long before the pair met, the actor was actually married to writer and producer Kay Cannon. The two were together for nine years...

The Writers Guild of America East has released a petition on Tuesday that is signed by 400 members, including high-profile Hollywood screenwriters like Tina Fey, Lilly Wachowski and Alfonso Cuaron, calling on MSNBC to agree to a union contract with its bargaining unit, which has been in contract talks for more than a year.
