Exclusive: More than 50 of Broadway’s biggest names, including actors, directors, producers, writers and others, are organizing to support Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 presidential election.
The volunteer coalition Broadway for Harris will work to to elect Harris, Walz and down ballot Democratic candidates this November. The organization plans to increase voter participation in key swing districts, produce fundraising events featuring the talents of the Broadway community and “work together toward a brighter, more hopeful, more equitable future for the country under the historic leadership of Kamala Harris and Tim Walz.”
Among those who have signed on to the initial organizing committee are Adrienne Warren, Alex Edelman, Audra McDonald, Billy Porter, George C. Wolfe, Idina Menzel, Jeremy O. Unlike other major awards bodies, the Tony Awards decide their nominations via a committee of industry members who commit to seeing every single production that opens during the Broadway season. New York — While all haircuts are important, the one Billy Porter got late last week was even more critical: It was his last trim before Sunday's Tony Awards.
"I just need a trim," he tells stylist Valjean Guerra, crunching his hair with both hands to show the textured look he hopes to maintain. "I want to keep the same shape."
Porter, nominated for best actor in a musical for his role as a drag queen in "Kinky Boots," then settled into a leather chair in a chic Harlem salon for an hour of pampering before a cast album party and another grueling show.
It was nine days before the Tonys – the perfect amount of time to wash and trim what he calls his "chunky thing." If done too close to the awards, his haircut might look forced.

Paper Mill Playhouse has announced the cast for Thoroughly Modern Millie, winner of the 2002 Drama Desk and Tony Award for Best Musical. This effervescent musical romp will feature Ashley Kate Adams Miss Dorothy Brown, Brenda Braxton Muzzy Van Hossmere, Billy Bustamante Bun Foo, Jeff Kready Jimmy Smith, Burke Moses Mr. Trevor Graydon, Lenora Nemetz Mrs. Meers, James Seol Ching Ho, Jessica Sheridan Miss Flannery and Laurie Veldheer Millie Dillmount.
