For over fifty years, Francis Ford Coppola has been a towering, and often controversial, figure in American Cinema. His filmography is one of the most legendary of all time and includes some of the greatest movies ever made like The Godfather (1972) and The Godfather Part II (1974), The Conversation (1974), Apocalypse Now (1979), and more. It also includes wild swings—One from the Heart (1982), Rumble Fish (1983), Peggy Sue Got Married (1986), Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992)—which sometimes paid off, but sometimes did not. This year, his forty-year-in-the-making passion project Megalopolis finally hit screens for the general public after a festival run that provoked a mixed critical response to say the least. It is a gigantic movie made on a huge budget with vast, and sometimes impenetrable, ideas. His very first film, however, was a much more modest project, made on a minuscule budget, and…it was a horror movie.

Written and directed by Francis Ford Coppola, Dementia 13 was one of the directors first films. This makes for interesting viewing, especially when it was also produced by Roger Corman. So does the movie show any of the hallmarks of his future films?
When Louise’s (Luana Anders) husband Peter dies of a heart attack she decides to hide the fact he is dead so she can get her hands on his inheritance. When she goes to visit his families home in an attempt to make sure things go to plan, she is unaware of what awaits her at the family estate that holds a deadly secret.
One of the first things that is noticeable in Dementia 13 is the fact it has a Hitchcockian feel to the film.

One of the best director debuts of the 1960s is Francis Coppola’s earnest effort to deliver a marketable thriller to producer Roger Corman, a gory, sexy horror show that will get past the censor. The 21-year-old student filmmaker comes through in high style. The spirited tale of axe murders on an Irish estate brings back a time when a talented beginner could hit a $40,000 movie out of the park. It’s been reconstituted to Coppola’s preferred cut after sixty years in Public Domain purgatory, and he provides a new commentary that will please his fans as well as lovers of the horror genre.

Though relegated to the sidelines for much of her time at A.I.P., Luana Anders could at least point to her starring role in Francis Ford Coppola’s first legitimate feature, Dementia 13. It was after hearing his pitch about a mysterious psycho killer that producer Roger Corman gave Coppola the funds to proceed—and though an unhappy Corman asked Jack Hill to shoot additional footage to spruce up what he considered Coppola’s too-stately efforts, the fledgling director was on his way to a legendary career.

Night Tide
Blu ray
Powerhouse/Indicator
1960/ 1:85:1 / 86 min.
Starring Dennis Hopper, Linda Lawson
Directed by Curtis Harrington
During the early fifties, an anxious era that leaned on fanciful songs like Faraway Places, Beyond the Sea and Robert Maxwell’s Ebb Tide, Curtis Harrington wrote a similarly dreamy fable called The Girl from Beneath the Sea. The 34 year old director’s script was finally produced in 1960 and premiered as Night Tide at the Spoleto Film Festival in 1961. Thanks to Filmgroup, Roger Corman’s distribution company, the movie reached American theaters in 1963. Instead of the windswept romance of Maxwell’s song, ticket buyers were treated to a fatalistic thriller with the unpredictable qualities of a New Wave film.
Dennis Hopper plays Johnny Drake, a navy recruit from the arid climes of Oklahoma. Though he looks seaworthy in his white uniform and cap he still seems pretty landlocked, ambling through the beachfront...

If necessity is the mother of invention, as the saying goes, then Roger Corman is the dad of opportunity; swooping in and throwing around minimal coin but expecting maximum return (or at the very least, something in focus). But the King of the B’s has always attracted the hungry and talented, and so it was when a youngster by the name of Francis Ford Coppola was afforded the chance to helm his first (soft core flicks aside) official feature, Dementia 13 (1963). Part Psycho, part semi-Gothic psychodrama, it served as a stepping stone between Hitchcock and Bava, eventually leading to a slasher formula that is still impossible to kill.
Released by American International Pictures in late September on a double bill with Corman’s X: The Man with the X-Ray Eyes (which I’ve Dusted Off here), Dementia 13 impressed some critics upon release, at least more so than what...

The new Dementia 13 trailer shows that some children won’t stay submerged.
Chiller Films has dropped the trailer for the upcoming retelling of Francis Ford Coppola’s atmospheric 1963 debut film Dementia 13, which was produced by independent movie maestro Roger Corman.
“A vengeful ghost, a mysterious killer, and a family where everyone has a secret converge in one night of terror,” the official synopsis promises.
The reimaging was directed by Richard LeMay (Blood Bound, Naked As We Come). Dementia 13 was written by Dan DeFilippo, who wrote the screenplays for The Invaders and Chilling Visions: 5 States of Fear) and Justin Smith (SiREN, The Boy).
The original movie told the tale of Luana Anders a scheming young woman who murders her husband and infiltrates his disturbing family’s stately, out-of-the-way mansion on a lake in Ireland. Her plans are interrupted by an axe-wielding lunatic who stalks and hacks up the family.

The perfect film to watch in old-school 16mm!
Easy Rider (1969) is much more than a 60s relic – it’s still a great movie even today. I find it fascinating that Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda took Roger Corman material and gave it an European- influenced arthouse approach. Combined with breathtaking visuals, a well-chosen rock soundtrack and some classic, stoned, improvised dialogue Easy Rider is still an impressive movie all these years later. Fonda had recently made The Wild Angels, Hopper the less remembered The Glory Stompers, and Jack Nicholson Hells Angels On Wheels, but Easy Rider reinvented the biker movie (or technically created a new subgenre: the “hippy” Biker Film), and things were never...

'Broadcast News' with Albert Brooks and Holly Hunter: Glib TV news watch. '31 Days of Oscar': 'Broadcast News' slick but superficial critics pleaser (See previous post: “Phony 'A Beautiful Mind,' Unfairly Neglected 'Swing Shift': '31 Days of Oscar'.”) Heralded for its wit and incisiveness, James L. Brooks' multiple Oscar-nominated Broadcast News is everything the largely forgotten Swing Shift isn't: belabored, artificial, superficial. That's very disappointing considering Brooks' highly addictive Mary Tyler Moore television series (and its enjoyable spin-offs, Phyllis and Rhoda), but totally expected considering that three of screenwriter-director Brooks' five other feature films were Terms of Endearment, As Good as It Gets, and Spanglish. (I've yet to check out I'll Do Anything and the box office cataclysm How Do You Know starring Reese Witherspoon, Paul Rudd, and Jack Nicholson.) Having said that, Albert Brooks (no relation to James L.; or to Mel Brooks...

Fonda had recently made The Wild Angels, Hopper the less remembered The Glory Stompers, and Jack Nicholson Hells Angels On Wheels, but Easy Rider reinvented the biker movie (or technically created a new subgenre: the “hippy” Biker Film), and things were never quite the same in Hollywood for the rest of the Seventies.

This week has been a good week for Vincent Price fans and Arrow Video. Not only have we got Theatre of Blood, we now also have Pit and the Pendulum in another steelbook release. The Pit and the Pendulum is the second film in Roger Corman’s Edgar Allen Poe series of films (Fall of the House of Usher was first), and although Masque of the Red Death is arguably the better, this is a close second.
The Pit and the Pendulum is actually a very short story with not that much content available to make a full length movie from, so Richard Matheson took some liberties with the story when adapting it for the big screen. With elements of Fall of the...

When you are a true movie geek some titles become a sort of Holy Grail. When I was a monster kid growing up in the 60’s I read Castle of Frankenstein magazine avidly (one of the greatest magazines ever published by the way!) That periodical discussed so many movies that I just knew I would never get a chance to see, foreign films, independent films, odd ball avant garde’ experimental films, it made me determined to see them by any means necessary.
I recall reading about Night Tide in Castle of Frankenstein and wanting to see it very badly. I didn’t get to view that title until sometime in the 90s. I found it on vhs on the Rhino label and was happy to finally get to see it, it lives up to its reputation, for me anyway. Now I am happy to report Image...

Blu-ray & DVD Release Date: Feb. 19, 2013
Price: DVD $24.95, Blu-ray $29.95
Studio: Olive Films
Sandy Dennis tries to overcome her loneliness in That Cold Day in the Park.
Sandy Dennis (Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?) stars as a wealthy and mentally disturbed spinster who goes to extraordinary lengths to assuage her loneliness in the 1969 drama That Cold Day In The Park, a seldom-screened film directed by Robert Altman (3 Women) that is now seeing its first-ever release on DVD and Blu-ray.
On a cold, rainy Vancouver day, Frances (Dennis) encounters a shivering blond youth (Michael Burns) sitting alone on a park bench. She offers him food and shelter and the apparently mute teenager accepts. Every night she locks his bedroom door, but the boy goes in and out of his room through the fire escape window, returning early next morning without her knowledge. Frances eventually attempts to seduce him and the boy soon...

Syfy and Korean monsters, machine-gun-toting Japanese schoolgirls, and some re-releases are the topics of this week's horror titles.
While Dinoshark (directed by Kevin O'Neill and starring Eric Balfour, Iva Hasperger, Aaron Diaz, Humberto Busto, Roger Corman) and Mongolian Death Worm (directed by Steven R. Monroe and starring Sean Patrick Flanery, Victoria Pratt) were on cable TV only recently, they're already here on home video. On top of that Chawz, the "Jaws with a wild boar" offering from Korea, and the hilariously unbelievable Machine Girl are vying for your purse strings all way from the Far East.
For the classically inclined, re-releases of Roger Corman's The Terror with a young Jack Nicholson, The Dorm That Dripped Blood, El Topo, as well as Francis Ford Coppola's Dementia 13 will keep you company this week.

Awesome news cult movie fans! Film Chest is making Dementia 13 available to fans, restored and in Blu-ray HD for the first time ever. For years, it was rumored that this Corman/Coppola shocker had mysteriously disappeared, but thanks to HD CInema Classics and Film Chest it's been recovered.
Produced by celebrated B-movie icon Roger Corman and directed by the legendary Francis Ford Coppola, 1963’s terror-ific Dementia 13 is available on DVD/Blu-ray combo pack April 26 (though Amazon says March 29?).
Considered Coppola’s first mainstream, “legitimate” directorial effort, this gothic psychological thriller – based on a story idea Corman penned in one night – was shot for a budget of $42,000. The majority of the American actors were college pals of Coppola, many of whom paid their own way to Ireland for the opportunity to appear in a film.
Although Coppola promised “lots of sex and violence,” Corman later battled with Coppola and...

Scorpion Releasing is issuing a new DVD of Robert Downey's weirdo classic Greasers Palace next week. It is available for pre-order from Amazon right now.
Unlike the older DVD from Image, this one is presented in 16x9 (1.85:1) anamorphic widescreen and some cool new extras. I think Putney Swope is his best film, but Greaser's Palace is right at the top of the list. Here is the full press announcement from Scorpion Releasing.
On 11/23, Scorpion Releasing proudly presents cult director Robert Downey's Greasers Palace on DVD! Robert Downey's critically acclaimed Greaser's Palace is one of the most original, bizarre, hilarious, unforgettable films that you'll ever see. This audacious social satire...even more riotous than Downey's Putney Swope... pokes fun at just about every sacred cow with great gusto, a highly developed sense of the absurd, and a good measure of slapstick.
In a film that must be seen to be believed,...
