Back in 2018, while presenting Best Director alongside Ron Howard at the Golden Globe Awards, Natalie Portman created a meme: “And here are the all-male nominees,” Portman said, pointedly underlining the omission of presumed contenders like Greta Gerwig for “Lady Bird” and Patty Jenkins for “Wonder Woman.”
Speaking a month after the ceremony, Portman said she wanted to bring attention to the disparity in the directors’ field without throwing the male nominees under the bus. “It’s not their fault, and they all made great work. You don’t want to not recognize them,” she said to BuzzFeed. “It’s just, why aren’t we recognizing the people who aren’t part of this exclusive club?”
But, Portman added, her goal was to make clear the obvious. “We have to make it weird for people to walk in a room where everyone’s not in the room,” she said. “If you...

It sounds like a joke: a movie in which Amy Adams turns into a dog. (Or does she?) And in some ways it is – Nightbitch, with that provocative title, isn’t shying away from its satirical take on motherhood, and the physical and psychological changes that come with it. But there’s a power and potency to that story too – one which director Marielle Heller (previously behind Can You Ever Forgive Me? and A Beautiful Day In The Neighbourhood) hopes to extract in adapting Rachel Yoder’s novel of the same name.
“There was something so cathartic about being able to admit that there is a deep animalistic rage within us,” Heller tells Empire. “Societally, or in our own lives, we’ve just figured out a way to bury it.” In the film, Adams’ unnamed ‘Mother’ grapples with new motherhood, and finds herself undergoing a canine transformation. “For me, the...

SXSW Sydney Headliners
Experimental music film “Pavements” and offbeat comedy “Nightbitch” are among five titles designated as ‘headliners’ of the film section on the upcoming SXSW Sydney festival.
“Pavements,” which premiered in Venice, is an experimental hybrid of narrative, scripted, documentary, musical, and metatextual elements from director Alex Ross Perry about the indie rock outfit, Pavement.
“Nightbitch,” which debuted in Toronto, is a darkly comedic fairy tale about a stay-at-home mother, portrayed by Amy Adams, who transforms into a dog.
Others getting the gala treatment include Max & Sam Eggers’ new A24 horror “The Front Room,” starring pop star Brandy as a newly-pregnant woman facing off against her mother-in-law; “Smile 2,” by Parker Finn; and Jason Reitman’s “Saturday Night,” based on the true story of what happened behind the scenes in the 90 minutes leading up to the first broadcast of “Saturday Night Live.”

If we were to talk about the hottest talent in the film industry today, Zendaya’s name would probably slip into the conversation more than once. An actress and singer who started her career as a Disney star, she has gone on to become one of the most wanted talents of her age.

From her role in Marvel’s Spider-Man franchise to starring in the teen drama Euphoria, there hardly seems to be a role that Zendaya cannot shine in. The youngest-ever recipient of a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, it seems that this year, the Challengers star is going after the grand prize even if it means clashing against the likes of Angelina Jolie.

It’s been 16 years since Christine Jeffs’ last feature, the seriocomic Amerindie sleeper “Sunshine Cleaning,” with Amy Adams and Emily Blunt. Her new feature “A Mistake” hews back to her 2001 debut, “Rain,” in that it is set in her native New Zealand and adapts its script from a Kiwi author (in this case Carl Shuker’s fifth novel). Though not a knockout, the director’s return affirms her knack for intelligent adult drama, here hinging on issues of medical ethics and bureaucracy — Elizabeth Banks plays an Auckland surgeon whose reputation and career are threatened when a patient dies after what had been anticipated as a routine procedure. Quiver Distribution is releasing the Tribeca-premiered film to 100+ U.S. theaters this Friday.

Shawn and Serena Levy have found their place with A Sense of Home.
The couple will be honored at the nonprofit’s fourth annual gala, set to take place at the L.A. home of Ted Sarandos and Nicole Avant on Oct. 24. The Levys are longtime champions of the organization, which works to prevent homelessness by creating first homes and a community for youth aging out of the foster care system. Their support is said to have been vital in furthering A Sense of Home’s work.
In a joint statement, the Levys said it’s an honor to be acknowledged for their support “but it is even more of an honor” to contribute to A Sense of Home’s mission and the lives changed by its work, led by founder and CEO Georgie Smith.

The Substance, French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat’s second film after her brutal directorial debut Revenge, has had a tumultuous road to the screen. After being developed at Universal, the movie made its way to Cannes as an acquisition title, where it made a massive splash, delighting and disgusting audiences. Although the visuals and performances in The Substance are impeccable, the bloated length and poor pacing keep the film from connecting as well as it should.
The Substance Review
The movie follows an aging, once-beloved celebrity in Hollywood who discovers what she thinks may be the opportunity of a lifetime: a black-market drug that allows her to temporarily create a better, younger version of herself. It’s an intriguing, creative premise that offers a feminist spin on a genre that is often dominated by male filmmakers and stories.

It’s an often-touted cliche that a great way to win an Oscar is for a performer to portray a real-life person. Cillian Murphy won Best Actor earlier this year for playing J. Robert Oppenheimer in “Oppenheimer,” Jessica Chastain took home Best Actress in 2022 for her portrayal of Tammy Faye Bakker in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” and Rami Malek won Best Actor in 2019 for his depiction of Freddie Mercury in “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
It’s curious, then, that Best Actress has often been rewarded to performers playing fictional characters rather than real people. Over the past decade, 28 of the 50 nominations have been for original turns, with a whopping seven of those winning out of 10. Here’s the complete breakdown.
Two out of 2024’s Best Actress nominees were nominated for playing fictional people. The others were Annette Bening (“Nyad”), Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), and Carey Mulligan (“Maestro”). However,...

The fall film festival season may still be kicking right along, but, with the conclusion of this year’s Toronto International Film Festival this past weekend, the film landscape for this season (and beyond) has come into clearer focus.
Big questions, however, remain: What films is everyone going to be talking about in one, two, six months? Who won big and might see even more awards glory come their way soon? Who was there? And how can film fans who couldn’t make it north for the lauded festival see the films we’re all buzzing about? We’ve got you covered, as we run through some of our favorite reviews, stories, and interviews from this year’s TIFF.

Previously known for roles in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” “Scream 5” and TV’s “Better Things,” 25-year-old Mikey Madison achieved a breakthrough earlier this year at the Cannes Film Festival as the title character in “Anora,” which ended up winning the Palme d’Or. Now, as the fall film festival season has heated up, she has taken the lead in our overall odds for Best Actress at the Oscars according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users. The 2024 Toronto International Film Festival was a success on many fronts, launching many titles into the marketplace looking for buyers, and others into the fall season, including the usual spate of Oscar contenders. But the festival continues to contract, with empty seats in the largest houses.
Many sales titles weren’t scooped up quickly. According to buyers, many were demanding too much money, which should eventually shake out. David Gordon Green’s opening night family movie “Nutcrackers,” starring Ben Stiller, found a home at Hulu, and Paramount just picked up Munich Olympic Games thriller “September 5” for November release, promising an Oscar campaign.
Surprisingly, “The Life of Chuck,” without a distributor, won the People’s Choice Award that usually leads to a Best Picture Oscar nomination and occasionally an actual win. The likelihood that the film will instantly become an Oscar contender the way “American Fiction” did last year remains slim.

Marielle Heller made a splash in Hollywood with her one-two punch of Can You Ever Forgive Me? and A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, but her latest project is a lot more disagreeable than that. Somehow both a massive swing and far too safe for its premise, Nightbitch is a massive disappointment, squandering a strong Amy Adams performance on a narrative that fails to keep viewers interested.
Nightbitch Review
Based on the novel by Rachel Yoder, Nightbitch follows a stay-at-home mom who spends day after day caring for her rambunctious toddler as she discovers that she — quite literally — may be turning into a dog. While this type of high-concept satire should be provocative, Heller’s film lacks the bite to truly connect.
Heller makes her themes abundantly clear from the first scenes of the movie. Motherhood is grueling and often painful — both literally and metaphorically. Of course, it’s not...

The Toronto International Film Festival — which I have been attending since 2007, and from which I just returned — has long been an important launching pad for Oscar contenders, from 1981’s Chariots of Fire to 1999’s American Beauty to 2008’s Slumdog Millionaire to 2018’s Green Book. But a few years ago, that status was jeopardized when the fest grew resentful of the fact that a number of films that it was advertising as “world premieres” or “North American premieres” were, in fact, first sneak-screening at the Telluride Film Festival, which takes place a few days before it does.
Even though virtually no TIFF attendee would have balked at seeing a film that had previously screened for a relatively small number of people in a remote town in the Rockies, TIFF decided to adopt a hard-line position: it told film makers and backers that if they showed their film somewhere else in North America before TIFF,...

Mike Flanagan’s The Life Of Chuck starring Tom Hiddleston is this year’s surprise winner of Toronto International Film Festival’s 2024 TIFF People’s Choice Award, a historically reliable bellwether of an Oscar nomination.
Over a sample pool of the last 15 years, all but one People’s Choice winner has gone on to garner a best picture Oscar nomination, and several – like 12 Years A Slave, Green Book and The King’s Speech – have won the top prize at the Academy Awards.

Actors becoming directors can feel like an event, especially when they opt to cast themselves in their projects. Embeth Davidtz, who grew up in South Africa, takes that auspicious step with a deeply personal story set in 1980s Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), screening the film at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, where she’s in good company with her Junebug costars, Amy Adams (Nightbitch) and Alessandro Nivola (The Brutalist). She now has her most significant role since Schindler’s List, thirty-one years back...

The stars returned to Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) after last year’s Hollywood strikes. There wasn’t much business activity, films generally played well, and protests nearly stole the headlines.
Screen looks at five of the key talking points. TIFF ends on September 15.
Stars are back
After last year’s star-light edition due to the Hollywood actors strike, the glamour returned to TIFF in 2024. And while there were no arrivals on boats at the Lido or stately processions towards the Palais in Cannes, there is something to be said for hundreds of real people lining the street outside the...

Plot: A woman (Amy Adams) who gave up her career as a stay-at-home mom begins to think she’s turning into a dog.
Review: I don’t know why, but when I first heard the premise for Nightbitch, I assumed it was going to be a horror movie. I’m definitely not the only one, as if you Google the film, it’s still classified as horror, and the posters make it look like dark, edgy fare. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that Nightbitch, despite its provocative title, is actually a sweet tribute to motherhood and the pressures therein, similar to Jason Reitman’s Tully.
It’s a good little movie, with Amy Adams getting her best role in a couple of years as the increasingly harried and unnamed protagonist (she’s credited only as mother). Once a noted bohemian artist, her days mostly consist of caring for her toddler son,...

The entire staff of Annapurna Interactive, the video game division at Megan Ellison’s Annapurna, has resigned, according to a report from Bloomberg, citing multiple sources. A rep for the company did not comment on the story.
On Sept. 6, Annapurna said that its president, Nathan Gary, who also oversaw the company’s video game operations, would be exiting along with the co-heads of Annapurna’s indie gaming division, Deborah Mars and Nathan Vella. This week, Bloomberg reports that Gary and the staffers in the company’s gaming division, over two dozen in total, resigned after negotiations to spin off the video game division from the larger company fell through.
Hector Sanchez, who helped found Annapurna Interactive, joined the company from Epic Games as the president of interactive and new media, and will now oversee the company’s gaming efforts. Today’s report noted that the resignations caused concern among Annapurna’s game-making partners.

Ten years ago, Scoot McNairy’s first collaboration with Mackenzie Davis on Halt and Catch Fire had just completed its first season on AMC, and the “little drama that could” gradually became both a critical darling and cult hit. Set in the personal computing and internet revolutions of the ‘80s and ‘90s, McNairy’s Gordon Clark and Davis’ Cameron Howe played computer geniuses who had great respect for each other’s intellects, and together with their impermanent romantic and business partners of Kerry Bishé’s Donna Clark and Lee Pace’s Joe MacMillan, the quartet’s interpersonal relationships continuously evolved amid the ever-changing landscape of the industry they helped shape.
McNairy and Davis’ characters often had a very brother-and-sister dynamic, so the Halt fan base was rocked when James Watkin’s Speak No Evil dropped its first trailer last April, unveiling McNairy and Davis’ married couple of Ben and Louise Dalton.

At one point in writer-director Marielle Heller’s Nightbitch, Amy Adams’s “Mother” says via voiceover: “Motherhood isn’t all sunshine and baby powder. Motherhood is fucking brutal.” That sentiment may be more widely acknowledged today, yet it’s still largely minimized, even by women experiencing that anguish firsthand.
Frustrated by the conflicts of motherhood, much of Mother’s wrath throughout the film, an adaptation of the novel by Rachel Yoder, comes out in voiceover or in quirky imagined asides where she tells others how she really feels before snapping back into reality and putting on a brave, smiling face. Something, though, has to give, and it does when Mother starts to suspect, per the film’s title, that she turns into a dog whenever the sun goes down. It’s a provocative metaphor for the way that it literalizes the transformative experience of motherhood. But as Nightbitch wades through its heightened narrative conceit,...

At the most recent Oscars, Emma Stone became the lucky 13th winner of two Best Actress awards when she picked up the prize for “Poor Things”; she had prevailed seven years earlier for “La La Land.” When she won back then Stone was 28 and joined the ranks of 31 other winners in their 20s. Another 35, including Stone the second time around, have been thirtysomething when they took to the stage to collect their Oscars.
Bracketing Stone’s two wins were women who defied this bias toward youth: 60-year-old Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”); 45-year old Jessica Chastain (“The Eyes of Tammy Faye”); double champ Frances McDormand (who was 60 and 63 when she won for “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” and “Nomadland” respectively), 45-year-old Olivia Colman (“The Favourite”) and 50-year-old Renee Zellweger (“Judy”). Writer/Director Marielle Heller (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood) refuses to color within the genre lines in her feature adaptation of Rachel Yoder‘s novel, Nightbitch. Heller employs everything from poignant family drama to pitch black comedy to horror fairy tale to highlight the complexities of motherhood and identity. It’s so defiant of easy categorization and tone that marketing has their work cut out for them, which is to say that Nightbitch isn’t quite what the trailer suggests. It is indeed messy, but the earnest cultural conversations on maternity and a capable lead performance transcend Nightbitch‘s wackier impulses.
Nightbitch introduces Amy Adams, credited solely as Mother, well into her role as an exhausted stay-at-home mom. Mother daydreams about acerbically expelling her darkest inner thoughts to a former coworker she bumps into at the grocery store, a familiar scene capturing the exhausting nature of parenthood. Shailene Woodley has been tapped to play the rock icon Janis Joplin in a new biopic.
Variety reports that Woodley has joined the cast of the film and will produce as well. The yet-to-be-named biopic is being funded by a $2.5 million tax credit from the state of California’s Film Commission, and per Variety, will have a $10 million budget for “qualified expenditures.”
We don’t know much else about the film, but Woodley wrote in a statement that she’s excited to tell Joplin’s story in California specifically. “California meant so much to Janis Joplin — from the stoops of San Francisco to the wooden walls of Sunset Sound, the state became the stage upon which she explored not just the world of music, but the world of her vibrant humanity,” she wrote.

The elusive Janis Joplin biopic is closer to reality, as Shailene Woodley has received a commitment for a $2.49 million tax credit from the California Film Commission for the film, it was announced Tuesday.
“I have a feeling Janis would be smiling ear to ear, zipping down the Pch in her psychedelic Porsche knowing her story is bringing opportunities and funding to the city and people that held so much significance to her,” Woodley, who will star in and produce the film, said in a statement.
“Thank you to the California Film Commission’s Film & Television Tax Credit Program — myself and the other producers on this project believe California is the only place to film a slice of Janis’s life with authenticity and truth — and we are so grateful to have received the green light to do so!” the Big Little Lies star added.

Stop us if you’ve heard this one before: A new Janis Joplin biopic is in the works. And this time it’s Shailene Woodley who’s attached to play the legendary singer and musician.

All About My Mother: Amy Adams Goes to the Dogs In Marielle Heller’s Barking Mad Dramedy
“Motherhood is fucking brutal,” Amy Adams’ unnamed Mother seethes in Nightbitch. Marielle Heller’s adaptation of Rachel Yodel’s novel is a fiery challenge of society’s traditional, patriarchal notions of motherhood….until it isn’t. Not nearly as daring or outrageous as it aspires to be, the well balanced mix of drama, comedy, and fantasy doesn’t so much to upset the status quo as find a way to make sense of it. But if that very structure for raising a family makes you literally want to go to the dogs, if raising kids makes you feel erased as a person, why not create your own framework for happiness?…...

This year’s 2024 TIFF Tribute Award honorees addressed a packed black-tie Fairmont Royal York Ballroom. Sometimes the tributees go on to Oscar glory. For example, after his 2019 tribute, Joaquin Phoenix went on to win Best Actor for “Joker,” Variety Artisan Award winner Roger Deakins landed a cinematography win for “1917,” and after his 2020 tribute, Anthony Hopkins grabbed an Oscar for Best Actor for “The Father” and TIFF tributee Chloé Zhao won Best Director for her movie “Nomadland.” The list goes on. Eventual Best Actress Oscar-winner Jessica Chastain was tributed at TIFF for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” as was Brendan Fraser for his work as an actor on the movie “The Whale.” And tributee Michelle Yeoh went on to win Best Actress for “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”

Who hasn’t wanted to turn into a snarling, free-wheeling beast when the pressures of domestic life — hell, of life in general — get too much? Women have transformed into beasts throughout mythological history, but that wasn’t always a matter of choice. In Rachel Yoder’s bestselling 2021 novel, “Nightbitch,” that line is a bit fuzzier. Does our heroine become a dog because she wants to or because she has to?
That’s just one of the questions at the heart of filmmaker Marielle Heller’s latest film, which adapts Yoder’s story to the big screen. Like her breakout hit “The Diary of a Teenage Girl,” her fact-based grifter tale “Can You Ever Forgive Me?,” and her deep-feeling Mr. Rogers-centric feature “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” Heller’s latest explores the different facets of being a very real person in a very tough world. Sometimes that includes turning into a dog.

Baby2Baby will be giving Charlize Theron some love on Nov. 9.
The Oscar winning actress, producer and philanthropist has been tapped to receive the Giving Tree Award at the organization’s annual glitzy fundraiser in Los Angeles. Per Baby2Baby, the honor is doled out to a public figure “who has demonstrated exceptional commitment to improving the lives of children in need.”
Theron will join a roster of previous recipients that includes Salma Hayek Pinault, Kim Kardashian, Kerry Washington, Jennifer Garner, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jessica Alba, Kate Hudson, Amy Adams, Drew Barrymore, Chrissy Teigen and Vanessa Bryant.
Theron said she’s “deeply honored” to receive the shine, which comes her way thanks to more than three decades of work on issues like education, reproductive health, the prevention of gender based violence and HIV among young people, LGBTQ rights and youth development, among many others. She founded the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach...
