Veteran actress Sharmila Tagore recalls how she did her eye make-up as per the suggestion of the late actress Nadira in the 1969 film ‘Talash’ opposite Rajendra Kumar. Nadira, who had worked with legendary actor Dilip Kumar in ‘Aan’ and also with the ‘showman’ of the industry Raj Kapoor in ‘Shree 420’ told Sharmila that her eyeliner doesn’t gel well with her face and she should use eye pencils to make it look perfect.
Sharmila shares: “I was shooting for the film ‘Talash’ in Kashmir. Nadira ji called me and said ‘the way you put your eyeliner doesn’t gel with your face’. She suggested using an eye pencil and then smudging. From then, it became my style.”
After listening to her story, ‘Indian Idol 13’ contestant Bidipta requested Sharmila to do the same eye-make-up for her and also asked to perform with her on the song ‘Ab Ke Saajan Saawan Mein...

By numbers, her work in the Hindi film industry seems quite scanty — at 33 films in around a decade and a half. But the statistics fail to reveal that, save around five, all were box-office hits, and some of them broke new ground, making her one of the most popular and successful actresses of all times — and a fashion icon too.
Though she struck gold right from her debut as female lead, and went on to become an “in demand” actress for everything, from frothy romances to tear-jerkers, Sadhana is most remembered for her trademark hairstyle — the famous “Sadhana cut” of fringes or short bangs (itself inspired by the elfin and charming Audrey Hepburn) — and pioneering form-fitting kurtas and churidar pyjamas.
But in her comparatively limited outings, Sadhana, who was born on this day in 1941, showcased her acting prowess. She could essay roles of a rich heiress to a village belle...

“Raksha Bandhan Is Elevated By Akshay’s absolutely spot-on screen presence” – A Subhash K Jha Review
Raksha Bandhan
Starring Akshay Kumar, Bhumi Pednekar, Sahil Mehta
Directed by Aanand L Rai
After two devastating duds, Akshay Kumar springs back into livewire action with this nostalgic ode to what what was once known as the ‘family social film’. There is a deeply felt message against the dowry system embedded in the craftily though a little hastily written screenplay which goes from tomfoolery to mush without skipping a beat, thanks to Akshay’s absolutely spot-on screen presence.
Part Kishore Kumar, Part Rajendra Kumar and fully Akshay Kumar, the actor is in form, taunting women who want to get pregnant with male children after eating his gol-gappas, fat-shaming his sister, one out of a quartet of siblings he treats as his children who must be wedded as per a promise to his dying mother, plus there is Lala Kedarnath’s assistant , played with a devil-may-care swagger by Saahil Mehta.

Nepotism is again a much-discussed subject in Bollywood, what with 3 prominent star kids Agastya Nanda, Khushi Kapoor and Suhana Khan making their debut in Zoya Akhtar’s next. The “N” word makes all of us movie buffs look inward. Is Bollywood really a den of nepotism? But if we look at the history of Hindi cinema, the star-kid syndrome is relatively recent. It started when Raj Kapoor’s son Rishi Kapoor made his debut with Bobby. Prior to that all the major stars, from Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand, Raj Kapoor in the 1950s to Rajendra Kumar, Jeetendra, Dharmendra in the 1960s to Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan in the 1970s, were outsiders. Thereafter star-kid after star-kid was launched with much fanfare. And yet there are 5 outsiders with zero connections in the film industry, who broke through in in spite of nepotism ruling the roost.

Core business is a phrase that got familiar with the arrival of corporate houses in the film business. Which is to say, they would stick to the business they came to do and know it better, rather than branch out into other businesses that may look lucrative but you knew little about.
In the film industry, too, the jobs were marked out for people who specialised in or were trained for the task.
But, when it comes to the film industry, every aspirant hopes to become an actor to start with, and aim for stardom. The name Meena Kumari is synonymous with sorrow, melancholy and desperation and why not???A verse from her poem ?Zindagi Yeh Hai? captures the core of her life. A tattered childhood, wrecked in marriage, letdown in love and betrayed by close relatives made Meena Kumari?s life so gloomy that she sought respite in alcohol and poetry.
Dard ke saye, udasi ka dhuan, dukh ki ghata
Shadows of grief, the smoke of misery, clouds of sorrow
Zindagi yeh hai to phir maut kise kahte hain ??
If this is life, what is it that they call death?
What is paradoxical is that Meena Kumari, not only became a victim of depression in ?Real life? but incidentally even on ?Reel life? Bollywood exploited her tragic avatar. With movies like Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam, Aarti, Dil Apna Aur Preet Parayi, Dil Ek Mandir, Chirag Kahan Roshni Kahan, Bhabhi Ki Chudiyaan, Kaajal etc. Meena...

He has been an avid bicycle aficionado for ages, but after a long time Salman Khan has chosen to endorse his passion for bicycles in a big way through Bharat, probably with reference to the context of the period that Bharat tries to situate itself it to. It is the common man?s bicycle that Salman Khan would be riding in Bharat, which as a template was emotionally marketed to a finesse by the original Bharat Kumar of the nation aka Manoj Kumar through his super hit film Shor.
When was the last time as a matter of fact did one see a major film star of the Hindi cinema riding a bicycle in the film? In the recent times when the fancy cars and superbikes that have made their debuts and have been positioned as a symbol of machismo, humble bicycle did went into an oblivion from the Hindi cinema.

Wedding Pullav which launches producer Shashi Ranjan's daughter Anushka was originally meant to be directed by Rahul Rawail who roped in his best friend Rishi Kapoor to make a very special appearance in this wedding comedy. But then Rawail had a fall-out with the producer and he marched out of the project. Ace cinematographer Binod Pradhan took over the directorial reins, leaving Rishi in a dilemma of loyalty. Says Rishi, "I did the film only because of my friend Rahul Rawail. Jab woh project mein nahin toh phir mera rahna kuch theek nahin lagaa." However the producer pleaded with Rishi to stay on. Professionalism won. Says Rishi, "Although my heart was not in it I've stayed on. Lekin Rahul ke bina dil nahin lagaa. I stayed on because it's the producer's daughter's launch. Why spoil the moment for a newcomer?" This is not the first time that Rahul Rawail...

Remember the super hit song Ajeeb Daastaan Hai Yeh..... from Meena Kumari's timeless classic Dil Apna Aur Preet Parai. Incidentally, the Daastaan (story) of Meena Kumari's life has suddenly become a hot piece of news since biopics are ruling the roost in Bollywood hence everybody is keen to exploit the life of the tragedy queen and mint money.
On one hand filmmaker Tigmanshu Dhulia has reportedly signed Queen actress Kangana Ranaut to play Meena Kumari in his film which is an adaption of the biography on Meena Kumari, penned by eminent late journalist Vinod Mehta.
On the other hand, interestingly, Meena Kumari's step-son Tajdar Amrohi, son of Kamal Amrohi from his first wife, is also making a movie titled Meena Baa Kamaal (Meena - the extraordinary). Initially Manisha Koirala was announced to play the lead but she declined the offer and now a new actress would play the part.

From Raj Kapoor and Rajendra Kumar in "Sangam" to Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan in "Sholay", filmy friendships have flourished with formulistic fervour in our films.
It takes guts to turn the conventional formulistic cinema about male bonding and revenge into a tightly wound intelligently scripted and judiciously executed drama of political subterfuge in Uttar Pradesh, a favourite haunt for Tigmanshu Dhulia's cinema, here turned into a hotbed of intrigue and drama.
"Bullett Raja" is woven around characters who aren't particular about the company or the morals that they keep. Politicians.

Who would have known that forty-four years after Raja Harishchandra (1913), India would be subjected to one of the most powerful and touching epics to have ever released from their film industry. This film was of course Mehboob Khan’s magnum opus Mother India (1957). A remake of Khan’s previous film Aurat (1940), Mother India has renowned actress Nargis playing the role of Radha; who is by far one of the greatest characters to have graced the big screen. The film was released 10 years after India’s independence and partition from British colonial rule. It is centred on the social and economic conditions of the country during the post-independence era and met with unanimous acclaim both from the critics and the public.
The story is based on Radha, Shamu (Raaj Kumar) and their children, who are subjected to extreme exploitation from Sukhilala (Kanhaiyalal) after Shamu’s mother takes a 500 rupee loan from...

'Mother India' (1957)
Starring Nargis, Sunil Dutt, Rajendra Kumar, Raaj Kumar
Pick a superlative and it probably applies to 'Mother India,' the mother of all Hindi classics.
It's a simple enough story, one of horrific hardship. A young woman, Radha (Nargis), is married to a young man, Shamu (Raaj Kumar), and the two are delighted with one another. Radha soon learns that her mother-in-law mortgaged the family farm to pay for the wedding, so Radha starts working excessively hard to ensure the success of the household. But the moneylender takes three-quarters of the crop as interest and the family can't produce enough to make ends meet, much less put a dent in the loan principle. Radha has three sons. Shamu loses his arms in a farming accident and abandons the family out of shame over his helplessness. The mother-in-law dies. A storm wipes out the harvest. Radha's baby dies.
