A 27-year-old Tyra Banks was elated when she landed the role of Zoe, the no-nonsense bartender in “Coyote Ugly.” Although there weren’t high expectations for the movie, which starred a cast of mostly unknowns who play rowdy dancers at a seedy bar, the movie became a sleeper summer hit for Touchstone Pictures, grossing $60 million domestically on a $45 million budget. The female-led cast — including Piper Perabo — were featured on billboards and posters and the soundtrack went multi-platinum, with the help of LeAnn Rimes and songwriter Diane Warren.
Now, Banks tells Variety that she’s been lobbying for years for a sequel. “I’ve had a passion to do a sequel to ‘Coyote Ugly’ for some time now. I’ve even reached out to [producer] Jerry Bruckheimer and the team and the original writer and they’ve had some jam sessions on what it could possibly be,” Banks says. “I feel like...

This is an unexpected but beautiful, inspiring film. It tells the very human story of youth yearning to express themselves through art (in this case as dancers) who end up through no wish or foresight as socially dangerous protesters against a tyrannical, arbitrarily repressive government.
Iran is such an interesting country with one of the oldest cultures in the world. It was fascinating to see youth whose only wish was to create art being pulled into social protest. In recent years from abroad we have studied the various moves politically of their conservative oppressive government. I have always wondered what the youth, artists and intellectuals were and are going through there. This film brings us inside, up close.
"Desert Dancer" by Richard Raymond follows the true, inspiring story of a brave Iranian dancer, Afshin Ghaffarian.
Set in Tehran during the volatile climate of the 2009 presidential election and the start of the “Green Movement,” Afshin and a group of dancers (including “Elaheh” played by Freida Pinto) risk their lives and form an underground dance company.
One of the most socially dangerous things they do is to go on the forbidden internet to look at online dance videos.
With what little access to the Internet they had, the group discovers music and dance videos that were banned from viewing in their country.
The group learns various forms, techniques and styles of dance from timeless legends like Michael Jackson, Gene Kelly and Rudolf Nureyev. Inspired by these newfound heroes, they stage their own performances and uncover a passion for dance and one another.
While the political and cultural backdrop of "Desert Dancer" is very unique to the time and place, the struggle to overcome oppression— whether from a government or from within— proves universal.
"Desert Dancer" stars Freida Pinto, Reece Ritchie, Tom Cullen, Nazanin Boniadi and Makram J. Khoury. Director: Richard Raymond; Screenplay: Jon Croker, based on the life story of Afshin Ghaffarian; Producers: Pippa Cross, Fabiola Beracasa, Izabella Miko, Luis Astorquia
International Sales are being handled by 6 Sales. Rights have been sold to the following territories: Germany (Senator Enterta), Hong Kong (Cinehub), South Kore (Sookie Pictures), Lebanon (Italia Film), Russia (Exponenta Films), Spain (Betta Pictures), Turkey (Kurmaca Film), U.S.A. The Frontier is a blast from the past as far as suspenseful thrillers go, but it’s not an entirely invigorating one. Hitting on a minimalist 70s vibe that’s from a different technological era, filmmaker Oren Shai brushes off a heist story that never really comes together, as we find ourselves stuck in a rickety motel full of overly-suspicious characters. The style wouldn’t be as much of a problem if it were explored with more depth, really digging into the criminal caper on hand, but as it stands, The Frontier feels like a weird stage-play that’s far too separated by vastly different acts. It’s an unfortunate bore, and one that doesn’t beg to hold our attention, which is one of the worst fates a film can suffer.

Too Late For Tears: Shai Plumbs the Depths of B-Noir Devices for Punchy Debut
A brunette with bloody fingers shakily inhales the fumes of a cigarette in the opening sequences of Oren Shai’s directorial debut, The Frontier, a title that evokes the desolation of a vintage Western. But this musty, dusty period narrative concerning shady folks doing very bad things in an isolated outpost in the middle of nowhere is a snug throwback to the B film-noirs that used to be spackled into double feature zingers at the local matinee. Not one of Shai’s motley, if generally entertaining crew, qualifies as the proverbial ‘good person,’ but he manages to instill the same sense of investment in a beautiful but morally compromised femme fatale as those films from a bygone era. Though its production value sometimes belies a stingy budget with amateurish sting, Shai manages to distract from...

Guilty Pleasure. It’s a term I dislike immensely. Why feel guilty about enjoying anything? If you like some, you like something, end of. Another reason I dislike the term guilty pleasure is because the term, at least in movie-related circles, has become synonymous with any movie that is hailed as worthy of critical discussion. Adam Sandler movies are guilty pleasures. The Fast & Furious franchise is (apparently) considered guilty pleasures by some. F that. I like Adam Sandler’s movies, I like the Fast & Furious movies (hell, I’d even go and say I love those!).
But what does that have to do...

It’s compulsive viewing, like America’s Got Talent, not because anything groundbreaking is going to happen in the latest Step Up instalment, but because we’re secretly fascinated by how the choreographers will up their game in version 5, All In. There’s also that respect and awe we hold for such nubile young things without an ounce of unwanted abdominal flesh on show, demonstrating double-jointed moves that the rest of us can only marvel at. Dancing aside – ironic, considering that’s why people pay to watch this seemingly never-ending saga, the rest of the ‘loosely termed’ plot is mind-numbingly super cheesy that you do one or both: groan loudly or laugh incredulously. Either way, once the moves hot up, it’s like ‘street dance panto’ that can’t fail to entertain in some way.

While Step Up Revolution was the lowest grossing Step Up film since the first one, it still made over $140 million worldwide on a budget of $33 million. So it makes sense a fifth one would be made and it arrives later this year in the form of Step Up All In. Directed by Trish Sie, the film brings together characters from previous installments including Ryan Guzman, Briana Evigan, Stephen "twitch" Boss, Misha Gabriel, Izabella Miko, Alyson Stoner and Adam Sevani. Sorry, no Channing Tatum or Jenna Dewan, but they haven't been around for some time so I doubt fans will be too upset. This time around the dancing moves to Vegas as for a competition that brings everyone together. Summit will release Step Up All In on July 25. Bless you, direct-to-dvd industry, for churning out endlessly amusing extensions of movies that never should have been franchises in the first place. An EW staffer casually mentioned the third Ace Ventura movie earlier today, inspiring a group of us to reminisce about the most random sequels we could think of — sequels many of us were hearing about for the first time.
And so, in honor of both these little-discussed gems and the gift that is Friday afternoon, here’s a list of the genre’s most unassuming entries. Caution: It’s about to get all nostalgic up in here. (Like that’s a surprise.

This is a Pure Movies exclusive interview with Danny Dyer in which he says he wants to headbutt BBC film critic Mark Kermode. The interview, by Suki Ferguson, is about Age of Heroes, which also stars Sean Bean and Izabella Miko. Despite Dyer’s hard nut reputation, it turns out he’s actually quite a sensitive soul. Prior to this interview I was asked by his PR not to mention “the Zoo incident”. It would seem that it’s not a topic he has been able to shrug off easily. It also transpires that criticism in general hits him where it hurts; and unluckily for him he’s an easy target, as he is only too obliging in providing a hilariously Ott reaction. Like his character in Age of Heroes, one senses that controlling impulses does not come easily to Dyer. Even when discussing his struggles in acting, he manages...

Double Identity **
Stars: Val Kilmer, Izabella Miko | Written by Zvia Dimbort, Dennis Dimster | Directed by Dennis Dimster
Viewing the trailer for this film I was filled with excitement and anticipation, like the thrill a child gets when opening a birthday present, which has been carefully wrapped. Being a bit of a Val Kilmer fan, having seen him in such blockbusters as Top Gun, Heat, and to a lesser extent The Saint; I was keen to sit down with a freshly prepared bowl of popcorn in a comfortable spot on the sofa, and let the magic begin. However, it seems my optimism was short lived, as seeing Val Kilmer on screen after what (thinking back) has been a few years, I was a little shocked, and disappointed.
If you, like me have images of a young, athletic Val Kilmer, then you too will wonder what has happened to him? Kilmer appears in Double Identity as Dr.
