Tom Burke, who played the sort of Mad Max-esque character Praetorian Jack in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, and Maurizio Lombardi, who was recently seen as Inspector Pietro Ravini in the Netflix series Ripley, have been added to the cast of the Prime Video limited series Blade Runner 2099 – which is, of course, a continuation of the franchise that began with the 1982 Ridley Scott film Blade Runner and then got a long-awaited follow-up called Blade Runner 2049, which had Denis Villeneuve at the helm, in 2017. Deadline notes that Burke and Lombardi will both have recurring roles on the show, but details on their characters have not been revealed.

In case you forgot one of our earlier reports, a live-action Blade Runner series is in the works and has been shooting since April. Titled Blade Runner 2099, the series was confirmed as far back as 2021, when Ridley Scott himself confirmed that a concept had been made and written. The series was officially announced in 2022; filming was set to begin in 2023 but was postponed to April 2024 due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. The series is currently being filmed and about a month ago, we confirmed that Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh would be playing the main role in the series, which means that Blade Runner 2099 will be the first female-led feature live-action work in the franchise.

In case you did not know, a Blade Runner series is in the works and has been shooting since April. Titled Blade Runner 2099, the series was revealed to be in the works in 2021, when Ridley Scott himself confirmed that a pilot and the series’ bible (a reference book for a series with relevant plot and character data) had been written. The series was officially announced in 2022 when the title was also revealed. Filming was set to begin in 2023 but was postponed to April 2024 due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, which paralyzed the entertainment industry for a longer period of time. Now, knowing that the series is currently being filmed, we can also confirm that we have some exciting casting updates.
The Blade Runner franchise wasn’t a franchise initially. It started off as a standalone movie directed by Scott, which starred Harrison Ford and Rutger Hauer in the main roles.

The series was originally slated to film in Belfast last summer. In May, a couple of weeks into the writers strike, it was revealed that, due to the work stoppage, production on Blade Runner 2099 was delayed, likely until spring 2024. The revival of Warrior at Max turned out to be short-lived: The Warner Bros. Discovery streamer has canceled the show after its first season as a Max original and third overall.
That said, the series — based on writings by Bruce Lee and set in 19th century San Francisco — will potentially get in front of more viewers beginning in February 2024 as all three seasons will stream on Netflix. Warrior will continue to be available on Max as well, similar to other non-exclusive streaming licensing deals Wbd has made with Netflix for HBO shows like Six Feet Under, Band of Brothers and Ballers.

Max’s “Warrior,” a breakthrough series boasting one of the few Asian ensembles on television, has been canceled after three seasons. The series’ repeats will live on, however, via a off-net deal with Netflix, which has acquired the series’ run in a non-exclusive deal and could now potentially expose it to a new audience. (The show will also continue to be available on Max.)
“Warrior” returned for its third season in June after a two-year hiatus. The show originally ran on linear cabler Cinemax (starting in 2019), and was revived after a fan base campaign. Andrew Koji, Olivia Cheng, Jason Tobin, Dianne Doan, Kieran Bew, Dean Jagger, Tom Weston-Jones, Hoon Lee, Perry Yung, Langley Kirkwood, Miranda Raison, Chen Tang, Chelsea Muirhead, Mark Dacascos and Joe Taslim star.

Warrior won’t be returning for a fourth season on Max.
However, the existing three seasons of the martial arts crime drama are set to find additional audiences as Netflix has picked up the series’ library in a co-exclusive deal with Max in Warner Bros. Discovery streamer’s markets.
Warrior is expected to debut on Netflix in February 2024. If it does well, Netflix could presumably order a new season of the drama based on an original concept and treatment by Bruce Lee, sources tell Deadline exclusively.
This latest move sets Warrior in its third home in as many years. Production of Apple TV+’s Shantaram has been suspended after Justin Kurzel directed the first two episodes of the 10-part drama based on the novel by Gregory David Roberts.
The producers, Paramount Television Studios and Anonymous Content, called a temporary halt while they aim to hire a second showrunner to work alongside writer/showrunner Eric Warren Singer.
This will give Singer, a first-time showrunner whose writing credits include the upcoming Top Gun: Maverick, American Hustle and Only the Brave, more time to complete the scripts.
Shooting of the first two episodes wrapped just before Christmas and filming was due to resume today. Production in Australia and India will resume after a second showrunner is on board.
Kurzel is contracted to direct a total of five episodes. There is no word yet on whether additional helmers have been hired.

Julian Assange has become one of the most-recognised names in current affairs in recent years, and we all knew it wouldn’t be long before the events of his life would get the big-screen treatment. Now DreamWorks have put into production The Fifth Estate, the anticipated drama focusing on WikiLeaks which has been quickly developing in recent months.
And it seems fitting that Benedict Cumberbatch should be the one to take the role of Assange. He himself has become one of the most recognisable names in the industry in recent years, with an impressive flexibility at playing on both sides of the law, which I think will definitely be to his (and ultimately our) advantage here.
The studio officially announced yesterday that principal photography has begun, and EW have our first official image of Cumberbatch alongside co-star Daniel Brühl.
