“Euphoria” and “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” star Hunter Schafer has been tapped as the co-star opposite Michelle Yeoh in Amazon’s upcoming “Blade Runner 2099” TV series.

The show is a sequel to both the original “Blade Runner” film and the followup film, “Blade Runner 2049.” The storyline is being kept under wraps and no character are available on Schafer’s character, but sources says Yeoh will play a character named Olwen, described as a replicant near the end of her life.

Ridley Scott, the mastermind behind the original 1982 sci-fi thriller “Blade Runner,” first announced “Blade Runner 2099” was in the works in November 2021, with Amazon revealing it was in development at the platform in February 2022.

There’s no description yet of Yeoh’s role. The actress made history last year as the first best actress Oscar winner of Asian descent for Everything Everywhere All at Once. She’s also known for her roles in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Memoirs of a Geisha, Tomorrow Never Dies and Star Trek: Discovery.

Yeoh will soon reprise her role as Trek‘s Emperor Philippa Georgiou in the TV movie Star Trek: Section 31.

Exclusive: Coming off directing and executive producing the first two episodes of FX’s Shōgun, Jonathan van Tulleken has been tapped to direct and executive produce the first two episodes of another high-profile limited series, Prime Video’s Blade Runner 2099.

Tulleken replaces Jeremy Podeswa, who was originally set to direct the first two episodes but had to step away due to scheduling conflicts as the Blade Runner 2099 production schedule was altered by the WGA strike.

The series was originally slated to film in Belfast last summer. In May, a couple of weeks into the writers strike, it was revealed that, due to the work stoppage, production on Blade Runner 2099 was delayed, likely until spring 2024. Northern Ireland Screen said at the time the project had “been prepping on the ground in Belfast for many months now.”

In October, it was reported that Blade Runner 2099 was moving away from Belfast.

The revival of Warrior at Max turned out to be short-lived: The Warner Bros. Discovery streamer has canceled the show after its first season as a Max original and third overall.

That said, the series — based on writings by Bruce Lee and set in 19th century San Francisco — will potentially get in front of more viewers beginning in February 2024 as all three seasons will stream on Netflix. Warrior will continue to be available on Max as well, similar to other non-exclusive streaming licensing deals Wbd has made with Netflix for HBO shows like Six Feet Under, Band of Brothers and Ballers.

Steven Lightfoot has signed on to run the forthcoming show, Variety has confirmed. The “Hannibal” and “Punisher” alum has at the same time inked a multi-year overall deal with Apple.

Production of Apple TV+’s Shantaram has been suspended after Justin Kurzel directed the first two episodes of the 10-part drama based on the novel by Gregory David Roberts.

The producers, Paramount Television Studios and Anonymous Content, called a temporary halt while they aim to hire a second showrunner to work alongside writer/showrunner Eric Warren Singer.

Charlie Hunnam has been cast as the lead in Apple TV+’s “Shantaram” adaptation, which has been ordered to series at the forthcoming streaming service, an individual with knowledge of the project tells TheWrap.

An international drama series based on Gregory David Roberts’ 2004 novel, “Shantaram” follows the story of Lin (Hunnam), a man who has escaped an Australian prison and carves out a new life in Bombay.

The 10-episode series is written by Eric Warren Singer (“American Hustle”) with Justin Kurzel (“Assassin’s Creed”) set to direct the first two episodes. Singer and Kurzel executive produce the series along with former “Fear the Walking Dead” showrunner Dave Erickson, Nicole Clemens, Anonymous Content’s Steve Golin, Andrea Barron and Richard Sharkey.

Apple landed the project, based on Gregory David Roberts’ best-selling novel, more than a year ago in a competitive situation to develop for straight-to-series consideration.

Shantaram hails from Anonymous Content and Paramount Television, which in early 2018 won a monthlong bidding war for the rights to Roberts’ 2004 novel set in Australia and India that explores love, forgiveness, courage and redemption, as well as for Robert’s sequel novel, The Mountain Shadow.

Paramount Television and Anonymous Content’s 10-part TV adaptation of Gregory David Roberts’ novel Shantaram will shoot in Melbourne thanks to grants from the Federal Government and Film Victoria.

Justin Kurzel, who is directing the first two episodes, is holding auditions for the production commissioned by Apple TV, which will shoot in October.

Published in 2003, the novel follows Lindsay, a bank robber and heroin addict who escapes from Melbourne’s Pentridge Prison and flees to India, which mirrors the author’s experience.

Landing in Bombay, he is forced to live in the slums, which shelters him from the authorities. He sets up a free health clinic as a way to contribute to the community, learns about the local culture and customs and becomes fluent in Marathi, the local language.

He also witnesses and battles outbreaks of cholera and firestorms and becomes involved in trading with the lepers.

In addition, the busy Gordon directs two episodes of Amazon’s The Hunt, a vengeance-driven Nazi hunting series executive produced by Oscar-winning Get Out writer-director Jordan Peele.

Exclusive: Three episodes into Warrior‘s freshman run, Cinemax has given an official second-season renewal to the Tong Wars drama series from Justin Lin and Banshee co-creator Jonathan Tropper.

Created by Tropper, based on the writings of martial arts legend Bruce Lee, Warrior is the first internally developed Cinemax series under its new programming direction for fun, adrenalized fare. The cable network currently airs about four original series a year, three of them co-productions (or very cost-effective) and one marquee homegrown show with a Banshee-size budget tailored to the Cinemax audiences, the category Warrior falls in.
