The Criterion Channel’s at its best when October rolls around, consistently engaging in the strongest horror line-ups of any streamer. 2024 will bring more than a few iterations of their spooky programming: “Horror F/X” highlights the best effects-based scares through the likes of Romero, Cronenberg, Lynch, Tobe Hooper, James Whale; “Witches” does what it says on the tin (and inside the tin is the underrated Italian anthology film featuring Clint Eastwood cuckolded by Batman); “Japanese Horror” runs the gamut of classics; a Stephen King series puts John Carpenter and The Lawnmower Man on equal playing ground; October’s Criterion Editions are Rosemary’s Baby, Night of the Hunter, Häxan; a made-for-tv duo includes Carpenter’s underrated Someone’s Watching Me!; meanwhile, The Wailing and The Babadook stream alongside a collection of Cronenberg and Stephanie Rothman titles.
Otherwise, Winona Ryder and Raúl Juliá are given retrospectives, as are filmmakers Arthur J. Bressan Jr. and Lionel Rogosin.

Although Dìdi may initially start to play out as a coming-of-age type story focusing on a young man overcoming cultural barriers, it becomes obvious quite quickly that the heart of the film lies in the boy’s relationship with his mother and how exactly that shapes and directs his life.
Set during the summer of 2008, the film follows the exploits of a 13-year-old Taiwanese American boy who is coming to terms with his adolescence as well as an often confrontational relationship with his mother.
Director Sean Wang makes his narrative feature directorial debut – he previously helmed numerous shorts and a pair of feature-length documentaries with A Marble Travelogue (2021) and Lady of the Harbour (2017) – with this film. Given the emotional impact the film carries and the depth with which the story is handled, it portends more quality work from Wang as he continues to hone and define his narrative voice. I love a great surprise. And this year, a handful of terrific films inspired and thrilled us. The latest flick to bring all the feels is the fantastic Didi. The movie tells the story of a young and rambunctious 13-year-old living in 2008. Izaac Wang, as the lad, is remarkable in a challenging performance that makes the film near perfect. Joan Chen also shines as a mother who has to carry a heavy burden. It’s an incredible feature directed by Sean Wang, and if you didn’t get to check it out during its initial release, I’d highly recommend it as it moves into an expanded release on Friday, August 16.
Recently, we sat down for interviews with the film’s writer/director, Sean Wang, as well as Joan Chen and Izaac Wang. After complimenting my backdrop, we immediately jumped into the conversation. Sean opened up about telling this personal story.

Cuckoo is looking at a $3+ million opening, not a Longlegs debut ($22 million) but on target for Neon’s Alpine-set horror starring Hunter Schafer and Dan Stevens.
R-rated Cuckoo by Tilman Singer opened at 1,503 theaters for 9th place at the domestic box office. Schafer is great as troubled 17-year-old Gretchen, who reluctantly leaves her American home after her mother dies to live with her father and his new family just as they move to a resort in the beautiful German Alps. Owner Herr König takes an inexplicable interest in Gretchen’s mute half-sister, while Gretchen herself is plagued by strange noises and bloody visions until she discovers a shocking secret
Longlegs by Osgood Perkins is no. 10 in week 5 with an estimated $2 million on 1,310 screens for a hefty $71 million gross. It’s sticking around amid a steadier stream of studio wide releases and tentpoles.

It's Doomsday on the Empire Podcast, folks. Following the bombshell Hall H announcement at San Diego Comic-Con that Robert Downey Jr. is going to return to the MCU, crucially not as Tony Stark but as legendary Latvian supervillain Doctor Doom, many of you asked that we record a special podcast dedicated to the news. Unfortunately we were unable to do that. Fortunately however, we do make up for it on this week's episode as Chris Hewitt, Helen O'Hara, and Amon Warmann lock themselves in the pod booth and spend much of the movie news section scratching their heads and speculating wildly about the news and what it means. It's a long section, so if you're an McU-sceptic, here's a helpful timecode so you can skip ahead [42:38 - 1:02:20 approx]. If you're in the tank for Marvel's multiversal madness however, the team do also talk about the new Fantastic Four movie title, Thunderbolts* and...

Written and directed by Sean Wang, Didi is a touching and beautifully crafted coming-of-age tale that delves deep into the heart of adolescent struggles. Set in the late 2000s, the movie follows Chris (Izaac Wang), a 13-year-old Taiwanese-American boy, as he navigates the challenges of growing up in a diverse multicultural community.
In the summer of 2008, as he stands on the cusp of high school, Chris (Wang) embarks on a journey of self-discovery. Living in California, Chris feels the weight of cultural expectations from his immigrant family and the pressures of fitting in with his peers. Through the last month of summer, he is plagued by familial guilt and suffocating anxiety about what awaits him in the future.

Hip hip hooray! This year, an underrated Netflix original series will be celebrating its 10-year anniversary. Can you guess what show it is? I'll give you a hint. The show's title shares the same exact name of a game you play with friends in a pool. Drum roll, please. It's none other than the period drama, Marco Polo!
The first season was released on Netflix on Dec. 12, 2014. This means that on Dec. 12, 2024, the period drama will be turning 10. Naturally, it would make sense to rewatch the series to celebrate its upcoming anniversary, and that's exactly what we're going to do. You should as well!
Created by John Fusco, Marco Polo is loosely based on the adventures of the real-life Venetian explorer Marco Polo. The story takes place during the 13th century and focuses on Marco Polo's time in the court of Kublai Khan, the Mongolian emperor, to whom he becomes a trusted advisor and friend.

Exclusive: Director and actress Joan Chen has purchased the life rights of Dr. Qin Huilan and Wei-Lai.
Qin Huilan is a 70-year-old, retired doctor who traveled to Shanghai in 2022 to visit her youngest son, Wei-Lai. As the weather got cold, Huilan borrowed a cashmere coat from her son who surprisingly had a closet full of major designer brands, including Prada. Despite the unspoken taboo subject, the two of them formed a new bond over fashion when Wei-Lai encouraged her to begin posting photos in his outfits on social media accounts that he had created for her.
The following grew quickly, and caught the attention of Ashley Brokaw, an American fashion casting director who is known for her work with Prada. Brokaw direct messaged Huilan via Instagram, informing her that she had spoken with Mrs. Prada, and the two of them would love to have Huilan walk in the 2024 MiuMiu Paris Fashion Week show.

Thirty-seven years after her Hollywood breakthrough in The Last Emperor, Chen is back in new drama Dìdi. She discusses her roots in China, objectification and the protective power of creativity
Joan Chen is talking about her busier-than-ever work schedule, her face lit up with excitement, when she mentions being “in the winter of my career”. After decades in the film industry, she sees this as the final chapter. But the Chinese American actor never expected there could be new beginnings, too: at 63, she has been earning glowing reviews for her moving performance in the indie film Dìdi (弟弟).
After her breakout role in 1987’s sumptuous historical epic The Last Emperor, Chen became a huge star in the 90s, until she got tired of being typecast as the exotic, seductive temptress and started making her own films. She has continued to work quietly and consistently as an actor and director, in Hollywood and China,...

Sean Wang’s Sundance sensation Dìdi is a gorgeously told tale of growing up in the late noughties. Here’s our review.
Sean Wang’s Dìdi does something rather miraculous. It manages to capture a sense of a very specific time with its details while also telling a universal coming-of-age story from a unique point of view. If you grew up in the 2000s, listened to Paramore and spent your afternoons watching Youtube videos, this is a film for you.
Chris Wang (Izaac Wang) is a teenager growing up in California in 2008. He spends his free time skateboarding and causing mayhem with his friends while harbouring a crush on schoolmate Madi and worrying about how to kiss girls. Coming from a Taiwanese-American family, Chris is constantly pulled in different directions by the two cultures and identities.
In many ways, Dìdi feels almost like a prequel to Bo Burnham’s excellent Eight Grade.

While trying to chat up classmate Madi (Mahaela Park) on Aim, Chris (Izaac Wang) skims her MySpace for an “in”. Then, beneath all the Paramore pictures and low-res GIFs is a list of her favorite movies. Oh, A Walk to Remember is one of them. He fakes loving it; “its helllllla good,” he says. Now he has to maintain that––at least for a few scenes. This sort of thing happens throughout Sean Wang’s feature directorial debut. The character moments flow on a moment-to-moment basis and the period detail is quite good beneath it. Ultimately, Dìdi (弟弟) works despite its untapped potential.

Li Ziwei was taking the Mandarin Proficiency Test at Beijing’s Communication University of China when she first heard about plans to inaugurate what would evolve into the First International Film Festival.
That was 18 years ago and, as Li tells it, the landscape for cinema in China remained dominated solely by the major film and TV studios. But changes were afoot. Technology was increasingly allowing students to dream big as digital video (Dv) cameras, first, and later smartphones, brought filmmaking within reach.

All coming-of-age movies essentially hit the same beats: the getting of wisdom, the loss of innocence, the passage from childhood to some hard-won form of adulthood. Only the names, regions, eras and cultures change. Trace a through line from The 400 Blows to Lady Bird, however, and you’ll notice the best of these stories don’t just look back — in anger, in sorrow, in a misty cloud of nostalgia — but spark recognition of the good, bad and very ugly of your own formative years. You can add Sean Wang...

How ‘Dìdi’ Star Joan Chen Channeled the Toughest Parts of Motherhood for Her Deepest Performance Yet
Sean Wang’s “Dìdi” hits where it hurts for any millennial who came of age in middle school in 2008 — on MySpace and AOL Instant Messenger and in the throes of puberty. But it’s especially hard-hitting for Taiwanese-Americans raised in the California Bay Area at the time, as Fremont-hailing writer/director Wang’s big Sundance winner (including an Audience Award) is based on his own youth — one where he was often recalcitrant toward his single mom.
In this frank and affecting dramedy, young actor Izaac Wang plays Chris, a 13-year-old spending the summer before his freshman year of high school surfing the web and making YouTube videos with his pals. Until he falls in with an older crowd he seeks to impress. In the seemingly endless summer between eighth and ninth grade, there’s a crush, too, he’s trying to woo — with embarrassingly dismal results. Back at home, the...

Imax Live is out today with the Openings Ceremony of the Paris Olympics. Bleecker Street debuts star-studded The Fabulous Four, Sundance winner Didi opens in limited release and Kit Harrington is a werewolf dad in The Beast Within. Again this weekend, another massive wide release, Deadpool & Wolverine, dominates the box office. Tentpoles are good for the box office but the indie market is still waiting to ascertain if big movies can boost small ones.
Imax wins for most topical. In its ongoing experimentation with live events, the big screen exhibitor is at this very moment showing the Opening Ceremony of the Summer Olympic in Paris at 100 locations nationwide.
Presales had been a bit slow but that was expected – it’s a four-hour-plus chunk in the middle of the day, even earlier on the West Coast – but Deadline hears showings are actually at or approaching sellout in a number of markets...

For a certain subset of very online younger millennials, a film like writer-director Sean Wang’s Dìdi ought to carry a trigger warning. The level of detail is so hyper-specific that the film feels unearthed from a time capsule. Be it through a bookmarked link to Addicting Games or an oversharing Facebook wall post, Wang’s film instantly conjures vivid imagery of being a teenager in the precise time frame of summer 2008.
Wang has glanced back at late-aughts culture nostalgically in his documentary projects like the 2021 short H.A.G.S. (Have a Good Summer), an inventive flip-through of his middle school yearbook. But his feature-length fictional debut, which arrives hot on the heels of his Oscar-nominated short “Nai Nai & Wài Pó,” has much more on its mind.
This coming-of-age story, set in Wang’s suburban northern California hometown of Fremont, follows Chris (Izaac Wang), a 13-year-old aggravated by the...

The director explains how a desire to transcend race and immigrant identity led to his semi-autobiographical tale of an angst-ridden Taiwanese American teenage skater and an Oscar-nominated short about his grandmothers
Sean Wang is jet-lagged. He has been up since 4am after arriving in London late the night before. When he couldn’t get back to sleep, the film-maker headed to the Southbank Centre. Surrounded by the deserted streets of the city, it was just him and his skateboard as he tried out tricks. He has been obsessed with skateboarding since his early teens. “Everything that I love now, whether it’s the music I listen to or the way I dress, it all traces back to skating.”
Wang, 30, has channelled this passion into his debut feature film, Dìdi (弟弟), which means “little brother” in Chinese. The semi-autobiographical tale of Chris (Izaac Wang), an awkward and angst-ridden 13-year-old Taiwanese American...

Sometimes I think the best “coming of age” stories are the ones that open old wounds. The older we get, the harder it is to remember exactly what it was like to be young and inexperienced, stepping out into the world for the very first time. But an expertly crafted tale of adolescence reminds us just how painful life was when we knew nothing about it. We thought we were making it all up as we went along, that nobody ever felt the way we felt before and that nobody ever would again. Films like Sean Wang’s “Dìdi” remind us — to our relief and, often, embarrassment — that everyone else pretty much felt the same way.
“Dìdi” is Wang’s feature film debut, after his 2023 Oscar-nominated documentary short “Nǎi Nai & Wài Pó,” about the day-to-day life of his two grandmothers. Do yourself a favor and watch “Nǎi Nai & Wài Pó,...

Any “Twin Peaks” fan worth their garmonbozia won’t forget the tragic fate of Josie Packard. In the Lesli Linka Glatter-directed Episode 16 of Season 2, the Packard Sawmill owner (Joan Chen) dies suddenly after a standoff with FBI agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan), her soul appearing to then live inside a wooden drawer knob in a room at the Great Northern hotel.
It’s an unforgettable image, but a bit of a sad, anticlimactic one for Chen, who at that point wanted to be written out of David Lynch and Mark Frost’s show to pursue other opportunities.
The Hollywood Reporter revealed in 2017 how Chen appealed to David Lynch with a letter, asking for Josie Packard to be brought back into the series for Showtime’s “The Return,” or Season 3 of “Twin Peaks.”

A gutshot coming-of-age story aimed directly at those former teenagers who weathered the great transition from MySpace to Facebook, writer/director Sean Wang's Dìdi is—like so many backwards-looking films about youth—almost more painful than poignant. It's not upsetting, nor is it overly invested in tricking tears out of us.

Rutger Hauer and Ridley Scott only made one film together, the 1982 classic Blade Runner – but Hauer went on to make two more movies that were scripted by Blade Runner screenwriter David Webb Peoples; the 1985 medieval fantasy film Ladyhawke (where Peoples went uncredited) and the apocalyptic 1989 film The Blood of Heroes, which Peoples also directed. Now War Is Hell: Making Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth and Soldier: From Script to Screen author Danny Stewart has dug into the making of The Blood of Heroes with his new book Saluting The Blood of Heroes: Behind the Apocalyptic Film, and copies are available for purchase on Amazon!
Also known as The Salute of the Jugger, The Blood of Heroes has the following synopsis: In a future where most of mankind and technology is wiped out, six people travel from place to place playing a brutal form of football with a dog skull.

With his 2008-set Dìdi, Sean Wang captures the intermingling of adolescent friendship and early social media through the lens of the Asian American diaspora, and with welcome specificity. The importance that a MySpace Top 8 and profile song carries in the world of Chris (Izaac Wang), a 13-year-old Taiwanese American boy, cannot be overstated, nor can the significance of AOL Instant Messenger in sustaining and expanding his friend circle, nor his YouTube channel in allowing him to express his sense of humor.
When it homes in on the disparities and contradictions between Chris’s online and real-life interactions, emotions, and behavior, Dìdi feels nothing short of truthful. Chris is a typically insecure teen, but to such an extreme that he’s almost preternaturally self-sabotaging. And Wang admirably doesn’t shy away from depicting Chris at his most awkward or abhorrent and the myriad ways his behavior alienates him from family and friends,...

While the Best Supporting Actress Oscar is often awarded to an ingenue, like the 2022 winner Ariana DeBose (“West Side Story”), it can also be a way to reward a more seasoned performer. In 2024, Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Leftovers”) won on her first nomination A year earlier Jamie Lee Curtis had reaped her first Oscar bid at age 64 and prevailed for “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” In 2021 Youn Yuh-jung, who is renowned in her native South Korea, won at age 73 for her first English film, “Minari.” And in 2020, the academy honored past nominee Laura Dern who finally took home an Oscar for her scene-stealing performance in “Marriage Story.” (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Supporting Actress.)
While Dern was clearly a featured player in her picture, two of her rival nominees, Florence Pugh and Margot Robbie, could easily have submitted themselves in lead for their roles in “Little Women” and “Bombshell” respectively.

Into the Badlands is “a high-octane sci-fi martial arts series” created by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. The AMC series is set in a dystopian future with humanity in ruins because of wars, and it follows the story of Sunny, a fierce warrior who rescues a teenager with a bounty on his head. They both journey through a dangerous territory known as the Badlands to survive. Into the Badlands stars Daniel Wu in the lead role, with Orla Brady, Sarah Bolger, Aramis Knight, Emily Beecham, Oliver Stark, Madeleine Mantock, Ally Ioannides, Marton Csokas, and Nick Frost starring in supporting roles. Into the Badlands is a unique series with a unique setting, and that’s why it is hard to find a series with a similar setting and story elements, but we have tried very hard to find shows with similar story elements and many high-octane action sequences.

The State of the Race
Unlike the other acting categories, it seems like the best is yet to come for the Best Supporting Actress race. So far, two of the few performances that actually have stood out include Cannes winners Zoe Saldaña and Selena Gomez from musical crime drama “Emilia Pérez” (though Saldaña could possibly move up categories). Then there is Emily Watson, who won an award at the Berlin Film Festival for her role opposite recent Best Actor winner Cillian Murphy in “Small Things Like These,” which Lionsgate is set to distribute.

It wouldn’t have been Sundance without at least a handful of coming-of-age stories. Sean Wang’s audience award winner Dìdi (弟弟) proves that, with a new perspective, there are still emotions to be mined from a tried-and-true formula. Exploring the everyday life of a Taiwanese-American boy growing up in Fremont, California, wherein issues of friendship and potential crushes can seem to consume every waking moment, the film is most impressive in how it completely nails its 2008 milieu. From trading Aim messages to being obsessed with MySpace Top 8s to looking up how to kiss through YouTube tutorials, it’s remarkable how these nostalgic touches are conveyed with more fondness than cringe.
Ahead of a July 26 release from Focus Features, the first trailer has arrived for the Sundance Audience Award winner. Starring Izaac Wang, Shirley Chen, Chang Li Hua, Raul Dial, Aaron Chang, Mahaela Park, Chiron Cilia Denk, Montay Boseman,...
